After nearly 20 years it was time to do some A/C repair on my Honda Element. It was smoking out of the A/C vents and losing freon, which means the evaporator core has a leak. The evaporator core is under the dash, and in this video I show you how to access it to replace it.

I appreciate this video, I'm in the process now and it's helping me a lot. Also, I don't think you need to remove that lower portion of the blower motor housing with that annoying one screw. I did it anyway and then realized it wasn't necessary nor was it mentioned in the factory service manual. You just remove the upper portion and the lower housing comes out with it as one. I may be wrong but for others who see this, it doesn't appear to be a necessary step. For those that do remove it, I found it easy to cut a piece of section of the plastic floor to allow my screw driver to sit more flush against the back floor and fish for that one annoying screw in the back he's referring to. Just an idea. Thanks again!
Edit: Figured it out while putting it back together. If you don't want to separate the upper/lower blower pieces, then you have to cut the middle of that plastic lower support brace that goes under the glove box. As per the service manual. That's the only way you'll be able to squeeze out the blower from under that brace as a whole unit once you unbolt it. I managed to just cut one side of it and just bend it out of the way. So I guess it's take your pick. Either cut that brace, or don't put that one screw back in like you did. For me I had to cut out a piece of the plastic floor and it took me a lot of time so I think I would recommend going the factory manual way of cutting that plastic brace to save time and frustration. Cheers everyone!

Some great info, thanks for sharing! That's where the cutting comes in per the manual's way of doing it.

Main thing is to vacuum the crap out of the system to dry it out once you’re done, I would vac it for 2/3 hours and add oil when I change system, 109 in shop today at 230 pm& I shut down for the day 😊

Just came across this video. I have been trying to replace the heater core in my Element. Everyone says the dash has to come out but there is nothing I can find to show how. I'm wondering if your method for removing the evaporator will gain access to remove the heater core.
    Thanks.

I made this video because everything I saw about the evap core said you had to cut a cross member in the dash and all of this other nonsense. I know you can access the heater core this way too but am unsure if you can remove it like this too. Sorry I can't be much of help but I think it would definitely be worth a shot if you tried. Worst case you end up having to pull the dash and you're already halfway there.

Looks about the same as a 07 Accord. Is there room to clean the evaporator without disconnecting the lines once you get the blower housing off?

If I remember right, the hoses are pretty secure in there so it will probably be pretty difficult to clean it and I don't think it can be pulled out with the lines still on it.

@@EllisMowersandmore yeah looks like it might be a tighter fit than the 07 Accord. I just pulled my blower box out the other day to check and clean the evaporator. Was able to get in there with a vacuum and some coil cleaner. Thanks for the video. Looking to get ahold of an element at some point.
