In this episode of #thedailydoug, I'm making it a #MaidenMonday by returning to music by Iron Maiden. This time, it's The Thin Line Between Love and Hate from their 2000 album Brave New World. I really enjoyed this song, especially the expected guitar solos. Up the Irons, y'all!

Rare but a bit special Iron Maiden song. Its good to explore some of their not so popular and different songs like that. Face in the sand is another one!
Face in the Sand is a cool song
Great call on Face in the sand.
Totally agree!
the whole last album is a special and diferent one! Hell yeah... face in the sand is a great one
Yep. Especially hearing Nick play the double-kick.
Brave New World is some of Iron Maiden's best work. It's all killer, no filler. It's the post reunion album I listen to the most.
If The Nomad isn't a filler...

I get super emotional when I hear this song just at how beautiful it is composed especially the breakdown solo when Bruce sings the title of the song
Doug, THE LEGACY is another interesting Maiden song that is not much popular but is very special one.
The whole A Matter of Life and Death is a masterpiece. It's one of my all time favourite albums, any artist.
@@Miwna Great album!!! I finally learned most of that one on guitar about three years ago, some of the best times playing along with my fav band!!!
Here here!
Yes!!!
YES! Love The Legacy, as the rest of Matter. One of my favorite albums to work to, I can't just listen to one song, always have to do the full thing
Brave New World is one of the most underrated albums of all time. It’s def in my top two Maiden albums.
Underrated???
@@rostislavbrebis1001 yes.
i am not alone it seems..... brave new world is a true masterpiece....
👍❤️
So if brave new world is 2, which one is your top 1?
"The Nomad" from the same album is very interesting to analyse.
That bridge
Nomad wymiata totalnie
most underrated Maiden song, najlepsza z płyty :)
@@aaronsmolar8535 that bridge is taken from a song of Beckett
100%
From this album, I love Out of the Silent Planet. It's based on a science fiction novel from the late 1930s. So way before space exploration.
In this novel all planets have intelligent life. All planets also have a Angel-like demi-god caretaker. An Oyarsa. But the Oyarsa of earth long ago became corrupted and after a war was stripped of much of his power and imprisoned.
So whilst the other planets continued to live in harmony, under the care of their Oyarsa (who are in communion with each other), our planet became leaderless. And cut off. Our planet the isolated one. With humans left aimless and without a guide. We became The Silent Planet.
The humans, left without guidance began this path of 'progress' and 'technology'. "Out of the Silent Planet, come the demons of creation" - Unwittingly going against our real purpose. "Before you know the crime it's all too late" - the path of self-destruction.
Within a decade after the book was published, humans dropped two nuclear bombs on fellow humans. The bomb, the devise itself, a marvel of ingenuity. The work of many genius minds.... "Out of the Silent Planet, come the demons of creation"
Well, you've obviously read the novel.
By the way, I have all three. 👍
Yeah, Iron Maiden got me onto C.S. Lewis. I never would've gotten into him but for that one of my favorite songs was based on one of his books! And I love the whole Space Trilogy, though I think the first two are the best.
There are albums which can be considered pivotal and developmental within a young man's life, which helped to mould and guide him within that period of growth. This album is the one for me. The chorus and ending of this song are extremely powerful and I will cherish it until I grow old! Dedicated to Hugh Wigley 1986 to 2004, who love this song.
As I became a fan in the early 2000s, and got the Rock in Rio DVD early in my fandom, BNW will forever be one of my favorites. The Wickerman into Ghost of the Navigator and then the title track was just amazing.
Absolutely agree. As a millennial I loved Linkin Park and Evanescence growing up. Listening to those albums eventually referred me to Brave New World. It was my introduction to Maiden, and 20 years later it’s still my favourite album of all time. After having listened to the whole discography and fallen in love with the band’s whole discography, I still think BNW was the perfect evolution of how to bring Maiden into the modern era. Blood Brothers, Dream of Mirrors and this song I still recall as the first songs to bring me to tears.
@@IronArkadius Damn straight dude!!!
One of the "few" songs written by Dave Murray (and Steve Harris). You can totally tell that he is the lead guitar throughout the entire song (specially on the ending). Such a distinctive style
There is one solo towards the end that is played by Janick. But I agree, definitely one of Dave's best. Along with Benjamin Breeg, in my opinion.
All solos by Dave on this one, pretty sure
@@agomezloayza No. 6:54 is Janick.
ruclips.net/video/QRxyCLPGDA0/видео.htmlm54s
You can tell by the vibrato (it's more "shallow" than Dave would play) and he uses variations of licks that he uses frequently in other solos. Dave also wouldn't play the fast notes at 7:00 like that.
@@mrcoatsworth429 ok let’s have a new listen 👍
@@agomezloayza I'd recommend directly comparing it to some of Janick 's other solos, for example Blood Brothers, Fear of the Dark or Lord of the Flies.
The little vocal part at 11:28 , where he goes up then down again, is just spine tinglingly perfect. What an incredible return for Bruce and Adrian this album was.
Taking a moment to recognize Doug's own growth in analyzing metal music, from back when he couldn't understand the guitar solo parts in Megadeth's Holy Wars to now when he recognizes and celebrates the little solo breaks whenever they happen
Still think you should react to some of Bruce’s solo work. Maybe Tears of the Dragon or Book of Thel. Totally different vibe than Maiden!
i would also recommend Jerusalem!!
@@iliaspanagopoulos6445
The live version with Jethro Tull!!! :)
Or 'A Tyranny of Souls' and 'Navigate the Seas of the Sun' - great tracks!
Darkside of Aquarius
no way out continued
This whole album gives me goosebumps. My first Maiden album at 15 ❤️
It’s their best for me too. It’s a beautiful record
This is in my top 3 Maiden tracks ever. I’d have paid ALOT of money to have been able to hear this live.
The title track Brave New World and Dream of Mirrors are my favorites off this album.
Mine too. The exact two you mentioned.
Dream of Mirrors is such a great song!
Dream of Mirrors is, for me, the BNW's masterpiece.
Blaze was part of composing that song and never got credit.
Whole album is wonderful
Not very popular opinion, but BNW is one of their best works. For me, easily on their top 5.
I concur, and by far, the best one post-reunion era and by a long shot.
Oh, I think it is a very popular opinion. Brave New World is a beloved album.
It was the album that I first heard for real, ghost of the navigator hooked me on iron till this day
The slow sections of this track give me goose bumps every time. Dave's guitar and Bruce's vocals - both so full of emotion.
YOU VE GOT TO CHECK THE LEGACY !!! FROM A MATTER LIFE AND DEATH !! ITS A MUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to say, even as a huge Iron Maiden myself, I've slept on this song. I haven't heard it for years, just in favour of plenty of others. Watching this video and forcing me to come back to this song, I've just now realised what I was missing. Thank you for this, helping me rediscover a great song from my own favourite band!
And hey - not in E Minor 😉
Spectacular song
Edit: the talking at the very end is Nicko going "Oh, I F**kin missed it" and then laughter inside the studio
Yep, and Steve saying “Keep that on tape!” ☺️
It's a pretty lame joke but Steve likes that sort of thing.
@@garymitchell5899 Lame joke?
@@vashwolfwood5899 oh is that it??
I think was "oh I fucking mistake"... And "is that the Devil say" something like that
I must say that Ghost of The Navigator is the best track in the BNW album, in my humble opinion, and the best version to analyse and enjoy the performance is the Live version from Rock in Rio 2001. In fact, BNW is one of their best albuns, ever. Iron Maiden IS MUSIC ! Great Job Doug !😁
It's almost difficult to listen to the album version when you have the Rio version of Ghost...! So much power on the build up. 😬⚡Bruce with the yeah yeah! And Nicko smashing the shit out of the drums.
Ghost is a great track, it has one of the best lines in a Maiden song. Nothing's real until you feel.
One of Janick's highlights in Maiden
BNW is easily one of the best comeback albums, well, ever.
I can't believe you reacted to this song! It's an underappreciated masterpiece... my favorite iron maiden song of all times. I can't tell you how happy I am about this.
This is my favorite song from Brave New World and from the reunion albums. It's beautiful.
I was 11 years old when this album first came out. My parents never listened to any kind of metal music when I was growing up. This was shown to me by a friend whose dad had the album. The first time I heard any maiden songs. 24 years later I still listen to the entire album regularly.
This could easily be my favorite Maiden song.
I love their closing songs. amazing song and amazing reaction. The Nomad from the same album has a great tune, too.
NOOO-MAAAADDD!!!! :) Favorite song from the disc.
Tremendous song. Forme the best of this album
Ohh The Nomad is a fav of mine.. love this album :)
This song is still probably my favourite Iron Maiden song ever. It still gives me goose bumps when I hear that opening chord sequence.
Montsegur - technically the biggest effort from Bruce since the reunion, I think. And hugely underrated, meanwhile it's a f*cking insanely good song!
The Talisman begs to differ
BLOOOOOD ON THE STOOOOONES OF THE CITADEL!
Yes!!!! This is such a good song, and for some reason it isn't widely listened to. Love it! Now you need to do Afraid to Shoot Strangers!!!!
Still my favourite album of Iron Maiden since Bruce and Adrian returned to the fold. Like every album since but I don't know something about this album with Bruce and Adrian coming back was like catching lightning in a bottle. Loved this album when it came out and still love it to this day. Great choice of song aswell Doug 👏👏. One of the most underrated Iron Maiden songs
Yes this is the best album post reunion
Brave New World is a fabulous album; it was a return to form for the band. This song is one of the outstanding tracks; Bruce's vocals are showcased beautifully. You should check out his solo work, specifically his arrangement of Jerusalem .... WOW
Especially Bruce's vocal lines gives me goosebumps everytime .Beautiful song really . Up the Irons 🤘🤘🤘
One of the more interesting pieces from the boys might also be Afraid To Shoot Strangers, lots of odd chord changes and a great song nonetheless
I've been asking for it to many times.
@@miqael86 I second you
yes that one deserves a video reaction
Yes definitely a favourite
The song that has made me fall in love with Maiden forever.
I discovered iron maiden with "brave new world" and it's still one of my favorites album. This song was inspiring from me in a period of my life when i was not so smiling as i was meant to be.
your piano additions were awesome bro!! especially the 2nd chorus. One of my favorite Maiden songs mostly bc of the powerful vocals and lyrics as well as those guitar melodies. great shit!
It gives me goosebumps watching you vibe to and enjoy this song!
My favourite Maiden track - very pleasantly surprised to see this being reacted to 🤘
This song has a bit of a special place in my heart. Was the song that got me started on guitar. It made me want to pick up an instrument and it’s been a fun journey. Bruce’s voice is amazing in the song too
9:43 was my exact reaction to that part when I first heard it
A great Deep cut song! Good choice.
You gotta watch out for those deep cuts sometimes.
Finally. My favorite iron maiden song!
Are. . . are you serious?
@@mournblade1066 yes. Why? Should everyone like the same songs? I'm not saying it's their best song. It's just my favorite. And that's fine!
Mine too! Good taste ;)
Such a beautiful song :)🤘
@@filipezanini413 Fair enough. But have you listened to their first seven albums? I'm honestly asking.
Brilliant musical take on my all-time favourite song. Really enjoyed your video and breakdown of the different sections. Bruce's high notes towards the end still give me goosebumps nearly a quarter of a century later!
One of the best Maiden's songs ever! Emotional solos, lyrics and harmony, astonishing vocals and etc.!
That song is a true hidden gem, one of my all time favourite Maiden song
I've always loved this song! Lyrics are so uplifting, and the guitar solos absolutely rock! Thanks for reacting to it, accompanying it, and bringing back Maiden! Always a super treat.
Awesome that you chose this song.....it's STUNNING! Massively overlooked by both the fans AND the band! They really should have played this live. I love the different feel that this song has in the first section. Yes it's not as intricate as the rest of the song, but it's quite an uplifting, fresh, fun section.....I love driving to this song. The rest of the song is like peeling an onion...layer upon layer of amazing new ideas/riffs/tempos. It's just an awesome song from them. Thank you for reacting to it!
“Bruce saying what he thinks as usual” may be a truer statement than you even realise lol. That man has so little impulse control that I don’t think I’ve ever seen him hold his tongue- and it’s great!
This album is perfectly majestic! This song was exactly where I had my first ecstasy with the lyrics and this brilliant instrumental along with the incredible notes of Dickinson's voice with the guitar.
I really enjoyed the way you broke down what they were doing with the tempo and would like to add a little on what you were showing with Bruce's singing. The way he sings is very much like another instrument in the band. More so than with most other bands. I will admit most bands have that song that the singer either does it well or approaches it but Bruce seems to just pull it off in spades. Thank you and again Great Channel!
one of my favorite songs from iron maiden, thanks a lot
Hey Doug,
Maiden's album Powerslave has it's birthday coming up on September 3rd, considered one of the band's best, maybe you'd be down to listen to the whole album, or maybe just the title track.
Iron Maiden in Brazil in 2001 untill Somewhere Back in Time world tour is probably their last golden era since seventh Son of a Seventh son.
What a great album that is indeed, it`s in my personal top 3. My favourite song being the previous one on the record, The nomad. It`s amazing, it carries me through lands unknown. I also recommend The mercenary and The ghost of the navigator.
Good choice, say what you want, there's no band like Iron Maiden, especially when their prog influences seep through.
Ironically their prog is what soured me on some songs. Then again I'm an old classic metal head.
@@metalmark1214 their first two albums were almost like punk metal, but maybe they went a bit too far in prog side with Seventh Son and the guitar synths.
@@praiha Agree. my favorite Maiden albums, the first 6. Started listening to them in 1982.
@@metalmark1214 For me it's the first seven albums. After Adrian Smith left, they started to go down hill, and after Martin Birch stopped producing, they started to actually suck.
Piece of Mind is my absolute favorite, followed by Killers and Powerslave.
@@mournblade1066 I thought No Prayer was just terrible, but Fear Of The Dark is pretty damn good. X Factor wasn't bad either, but Blaze was obviously not as good as Bruce. After that the quality went down, and Brand New World was the next truly good album.
really don't understand how such a great channel like this has only ~246K subscriptions .... it should be millions !! Cheers from Brazil
I remember when my brother and I used to take little cross county road trips blaring this album on the freeways and highways.
This song is really underrated. One of my fav performance by Bruce, just amazing.
This album got a special place in my heart because I was devastated when Adrian then Bruce left the band. More Adrian than Bruce because albums without Adrian was already really tasteless when Bruce left. But in my Maiden fan heart to have these 2 monuments back in the band was a great joy. And what an album !!! And what an end for this album 🤘
One of my favorites from the “current” post Blaze Maiden period. Bruce going full Steve Perry in the slow section. Maiden proving they can do it all.
Excellent choice! Thanks to the discord suggestion! This has always been a favorite track of mine from this album, however I feel I understand why I love it even better after watching this reaction. Great job, Doug!
For me one of the best songs from "Brave New Worl" along with "The Nomad". UP THE IRONS !!!!!
One of the many hidden gems in the vast Maiden catalogue
El Brave New World es un discazo de la primera nota hasta la última nota musical...obra maestra !!!
I just discovered this song about a week ago and I absolutely love it! Perfect timing, love your videos
Fantastic song!
Great reaction D!!
This is like a solid song that goes transcendent into the more sublime parts. Really like this one, glad you looked at it
Bruce's voice is absolutely beautiful on those last couple "the thin line between love and hate".
This is my favourite album of theirs. I can strongly recommend looking at a dream of mirrors from the same album.
Great breakdown of the song, got this album when i t first came out as a teen, dusted it off and cranking it all this month, this track and dream of mirrors are killer, the whole album is killer. Loving your ability to play along on the keyboard in real time, gives a great insight into the bones of the music and shows your personal skill.
Thank you for doing this reaction, Doug! My favorite Maiden album and a super underrated song.
They have so many golden songs among the less known songs out there. This is one of them. I love this song and I'm so happy you're back for some more Iron Maiden again. Great reaction!❤
This and Hallowed... and now Hell on Earth are probably my 3 favs from Maiden.
I don't know why but this masterpiece of a song make's me cry everytime I hear it
Nothing better than having a PRO like Doug headbanging to my favorite band
If you want to listen more Bruce, please listen "Jerusalem" from Bruce's solo album titled Chemical wedding. It has some celtic vibes and it's a masterpiece of a song with nice building from start to finish. Bruce has made many acoustic versions of that song too but the original studio version is the best.
damn.. I always loved that song.. and tbh I'm impressed how you just pick up the notes and play along on the spot!
Holy cr*p! Didn't expect this! Well done! 🤘🏻😎
I really love this song. For me the Brave new world is one of the best Iron's album ever.
So glad you’ve done this one Doug. I first go into Maiden when Brave New World came out and this song, especially the end solos, was the hook which caught me and I’ve never let go since !
***I love what Bruce says at the very end of the song - I fucking missed it hahahaha awesome***
I love this song! The guitar solos at the end is just amazing!
Dream of mirrors it's a great one too maestro. Greetings
Absolutely love this song. Bruce tears right through my soul at the end.
Yes! It is indeed a wonderful song and the fact that they left open mics in the end is because they recorded this album in a different way...."live"
One of my Favorite Maiden songs. Love seeing you back at the piano for a reaction again as well. You really show the beauty of their work.
Great choice! One of the best Maiden songs since the reunion with Bruce and Adrian. Dave Murray co-wrote some great tracks for the Brave New World album.
I absolutely bloody love this song!
my favorite song of this album Bruce sounds amazing along w the little humor at the end is priceless !!!!!
Doug, I absolutely adore your passion for music. It is inspiring and infectious.
Another amazing song is The Talisman from the album The Final Frontier.
The studio version is great, but if you see the En Vivo live performance of it, it's just purely magical.
"Bruce singing with Bruce" rofl absolutely spot on. There's a reason Bruce is my GOAT
I've listened this piece many times, but now with this musical explanation, it seems to be even better.
I am so grateful for this channel. Thank you, Doug! Cheers from Greece
This is one of my favourite Maiden albums - I have such fond memories listening to it on a cassete! :)
Oh man, I really really love this song so much, thanks Doug, you make Mondays way better thanks to Maiden mondays, would be great next time you do Out of the silent planet
This song is fricking incredible
The end of this song is so epic. Bruce is fantastic and Dave Murray's solos are awesome 👏🤘👍
Iron Maiden this band is with me now for 40 years... was two days ago at the Frankfurt Concert awesome experience
This is a masterpice! Love your piano on this one
The asymmetric pattern that you mention and the way you say it is 'split' reminds me of the theme - the line between love and hate. I genuinely love how you have brought me a new level of appreciation for what was already one of my favourite songs!
Also I specifically clicked to see your reaction to the high part and you didn't disappoint! Up the Irons!
Absolutely loved your playing. Just nailing chords and notes. You should do that more often, it's very entertaining
lots of love and respect from Maiden Atina
