I think Cattle Decapitation are usually considered Goregrind and not Brutal Death Metal, but whatever. Also, Grindcore is not a subgenre of Death Metal. It's older, arguably.

There is a band called Apocolyptica... four guys playing metal songs on cellos, each taking a part of the band and just doing their damndest... it was really novel and I still enjoy it occasionally but to me it will be the only ever truly symphonic death metal.
I feel like people often confuse certain aspects of Tech and Prog death, and in the end, mislabel bands. Necrophagist, Obscura, Braindrill, Origin, and Desecravity = tech death. Death (Human onward), Cynic, Opeth, Revocation, and Artificial Brain = prog death. It has more to do with a sound than the difficulty of the parts in the songs. Though, generally a good rule of thumb is that tech death is hard to play because of a higher note count and speed, prog death is hard to play because it's weird and the timing is trickier, the chords are also less conventional. That's the easy version of the explanation though. It's a lot less simple than that.

I think of melodeath at its own fleshed-out genre from death metal. Intestine Baalism and The Black Dahlia Murder are certainly true melodic death metal, but others like CoB, In Flames, and Aephanemer not so much.
