    Unpopular opinion but honestly, I think it's not that deep. Like, I'd rather laugh about my anxiety and eating disorder than cry about it. It's a way for me and many other people to cope. Doesn't mean it's promoting.

      I agree. I think being able to take a step back and think about how silly and illogical my depression is being helps me cope, and if a meme is the thing that causes me to go through this process of humanising my mental illnesses and putting them into a perspective that makes me feel better and safer then I should be able to look at and make these memes yanno

      Agree completely. No one making these jokes is claiming that that behavior is ACTUALLY okay. If you look at a meme with a girl posing with the caption ‘how i look in the mirror when i havent eaten all morning’ and you go ‘Oh hey maybe I should do that!’ You’re an idiot and there is no blame you can put on the creator of the meme.

      I feel like memes about self harm cross the line, because when you self harm, you don’t want to be constantly reminded that you do that, which makes all the memes not funny. I think that experience varies, but people should try to be less triggering with that topic, because you can trigger a person who self harms very easily.

      Helena de Troya Splitting is one symptom of BPD where they suddenly hate a person if they hurt them in some way, it can be a very minor thing that makes them hate that person. Just as quickly, the person they split on can become ‘perfect’ or an ‘angel’ if they do something positive for the borderline person. Most borderline patients have this symptom, not all though. This isn’t me trying to tear BPD sufferers down by the way, it’s just what splitting is

    As someone who's suffered from depression and severe anxiety for 10+ years, I've found that joking about it really helps. It makes me feel normal. To be honest I don't think I'd be here now if I didn't have a dark sense of humour about it. I know they are serious topics, which definitely do still need to be discussed in order to remove the stigma but you have to have a laugh now and again. I wouldn't say I laugh at every meme based around those topics but just ones I find very relatable.
    I agree that the memes on self harm (which I never knew existed before) are very distasteful as they could be triggering to sufferers. And I feel it's alright to joke about depression and wishing you were dead etc, but it's completely different to joke about inflicting harm upon oneself. Same goes with the eating disorder memes, maybe people with eating disorders can relate and find them funny but some are just way too harsh and remind me of the thinspo hashtag on tumblr.
    At the end of the day humour is subjective and everyone's taste is different. But some people just need to learn where the line is and what could actually be detrimental to some people who genuinely suffer from mental illness.

    • @mnlesnieski
      @mnlesnieski 6 лет назад +4

      This is exactly it for me. I have depression and general anxiety disorder for most of my life (from the time I was 12, and now I'm 33) and I don't think I would be here today if I didn't have that dark sense of humor. I agree there is a line though; I used to cut in high school, and back then I couldn't look at those pictures because I knew it would trigger me. I also think that whole meme about "suicidal people are just angels that want to go home" is super bullshit. If it's actively prompting hurting yourself, or someone else, it's definitely harmful and distasteful. But I don't see anything wrong with wearing an "Anxiety Queen" t-shirt, especially if that's how you feel.
      To me, it's owning your illness, and not letting it own or define you. Yes, you have a problem, but you're working on it, and trying to make yourself better. Life is going to be way harder if can't laugh at yourself.
      And I have my down days, where I feel like things keep getting thrown in my face, and I'm in a down-turn, and I feel like the world is against me, and then I see a meme or a shirt, and I'm like, "wow, that's so shitty." But again, I just feel like it's the universe trying to tell me to feel shitty/sad/bad. So I take a step back, breathe, and remember that (as corny as it sounds) it's a bad day, not a bad life.
      I'm in control; not my depression, not my anxiety. I can choose to let it consume me, or I can choose to turn it into something that we can (and should) be talking more openly about.
      Wishing you all the best with your depression and anxiety.

    • @RGsDevilship
      @RGsDevilship 6 лет назад +3

      Honestly, I think memes around depression and anxiety really just remind people who suffer from it that we're not alone, we're not the only person in the world who's ever felt a certain way. And I think that's really important to remember since mental illness can be so incredibly isolating. I also self harmed when I was younger and while I wouldn't be triggered by posts about it, I still don't want to see it and be reminded of that horrible period in my life.
      That's brilliant that you're in control of it now. That kind of thing takes years and a lot of hard work and effort to overcome. I've been in and out of therapy since I was 15 and only now do I kind of have my shit together. There are still plenty of bad days, weeks, months but I always have to remind myself that I won't feel bad forever. I agree, you can definitely choose to wallow in it and not get out of bed in the morning or then choose to get up and try to have some what of a productive day. I've had to set up a little morning routine for myself to combat the depression and have found that it really helps shaping my day.
      Wishing all the best for you too x

    I'm on tumblr and I see those memes all the time.
    And what I want to say is:
    Most, if not all of those are being made by people who are actually mentally ill. That site is actually really open and tolerant of people with mental disorders, as folks don't have to hide it, and it's not alienating. They know how it feels to be ill, and they're making relatable edits about.
    I do like posts like this, because they help me to cope. I make fun of my disorders all the time and it helps me a lot to apply humor to a bad situation.
    Now, some of those you presented can be really bad and offensive, but I haven't seen really extremes ones that often. There is definitely more of the funny, lighthearted ones.
    In summary, I think as long as they don't go to far, those memes are really funny, relateable and definitely have place on the internet.

      Sara Anne but you should care if they’re triggering, things that trigger meltdowns are serious. If something triggers a panic attack for example, it’s not so easy to ”not care”. I understand that some people use it as coping mechanism and they probably are okay with it BECAUSE THEY DON’T get triggered by it. Usually, when something triggers a meltdown it’s not really not enjoyable to experience - at all.

    Probably an unpopular opinion, but actually I think you are the one solidifying stereotypes within the mentally ill community. Memes can be funny and allow people to relate efficiently. Like you said, even without certain disorders, most people have experienced some of the emotions or symptoms that are associated with it. It allows us to relate to each other, in a light, easy to understand, and efficient way. You, on the other hand, come off in what I would consider a somewhat polarizing fashion. Reaffirming the stereotype that non-neurotypical people are "Hysterical, overly sensitive, easily offended special snowflakes that are super delicate, cant take a joke, and need special treatment" Memes on the other hand, in my eyes, allow people to relate and laugh and realize that we're all just normal people with different struggles, without attacking people forcing them to become defensive, leading to more and more stigma instead of using a shared emotion to come together and show we are not so different. I am not, as a disclaimer trying to make the claim that you are ANY of the things above, nor that you were trying to be malicious or harmful, just trying to explain how this kind of content may be more damaging than you might believe, possibly even more so than the content you were condemning. Up of course to a point. This does not, of course, apply to any memes created outside of the mentally ill community or anything glorifying it, just the ones that are normalizing it or talking about in in a lighter way.

    Always love your commentary with these sorts of videos. You make your opinions very clear but also allow others to feel differently which I really appreciate.
    I find a lot of the memes to be very general/light hearted so I don't have an issue with many of them (like the ones you showed at the beginning) but there are definitely ones that set me off.
    cw below: eating disorders
    But then I have SEVERE issues with others like the "skinny legend" trend 1. why are we associating thinness with "greatness" for lack of a better term, there are a million ways to appreciate someone without referring to a body characteristic 2. it desensitizes people to harmful phrases associated with disordered eating? for example, i saw a youtuber with millions of subscribers say "we're going to skip breakfast this morning because we are skinny legends" LIKE .... WHY WOULD YOU OUTRIGHT PROMOTE THAT ITS NOT FUNNY. i also saw another video of a young girl strutting around like no tomorrow and someone captioned it with "me looking in the mirror after not eating all day". it's extremely harmful, triggering, trivializing and stigmatizing and i genuinely don't understand how anyone can contribute to this trend.
    i think a bunch of these memes are funny and relatable, but others cross the line. great video!! xx

I think the funniest ones are the ones that address specific symptoms rather than just being like "depression anxiety OCD :((". I like the symptom ones because there are a lot of things that I have felt/thought/done that I've never seen anyone else talk or write about, OR something I've done that I didn't even realize was a symptom. Okay, so mental health memes can be great. (Especially for people who use humour as a coping mechanism, or in helping others feel less alone in their struggle or even just in tackling the stigma around mental health illnesses.)
    However, besides being really triggering sometimes, joking about suicide normalises it, leading people to believe that it’s not a big deal. So they don’t effectively seek out help because they aren’t worried about it . These jokes also make people want to have a mental health illness because they want to join this exclusive Club™️ that shares all these inside jokes. And sometimes they also perpetuate harmful stereotypes which feeds into the stigma around this topic. The same goes with eating disorders and personality disorders. If these things are treated like jokes, that’s all they remain.

Especially the eating disorder ones are just not funny to me. I’ve survived an eating disorder and that’s the one thing that I don’t really joke about or find funny at all, because just hearing other people talk about ed or losing weight can be very triggering to someone suffering or recovering. The jokes seem to me a bit triggering and showing ed in a light way just feels wrong to me

      My opinion is that Dodie definitely overshares sometimes, and every now and then it even may come across as if she is glorifying mental illness. An example of this is when she said "Do we create because we're depressed, or are we depressed because we create?". Obviously this is pretty problematic, because it can make artists feel like they need to be depressed to be an actual artist.
      To me, this only shows that Dodie is human and she makes mistakes too. I feel like she often uses social media to vent, and that is a dangerous path to walk. I still really really really love her and she gets me through my hard days.
      For many people (including me) her videos are a safe space and I know we all love her. But I did want to say that dodie isn't perfect.

    A lot of these memes (especially the suicide ones) really bother me, even if they were made by someone with a mental illness and/or suicidal thoughts.
    I've seen hundreds of "Ha ha, I want to die" posts on Tumblr.
    I think it normalises suicidal thoughts to a scary degree.
    And people can use them as an unhealthy coping mechanism by wallowing in this negativity and doing nothing else to improve their mental health.
    Also I think it can also be linked to the anti-recovery side of Tumblr, which is super super extreme and of course most who use those kind of memes aren't like that I'm sure.
    Anyway excellent video and very well-made, hope you're having a great day! :)

      Nerdtrashv1 I agree! I deal with a lot of psychological issues and when my sister shows me a meme about them (or mentions one when I am venting about my issues) I feel like it minimizes what I’m feeling and I am honestly wondering now if I’m just overreacting and everyone feels the same way or what??? But then people tell me my feelings aren’t normal and I should see a therapist...? I have no idea what to think and I already have a difficult time viewing my self destructive behavior as “bad”.
      I don’t feel like these memes bring attention to any mental illness. Making a joke out of something doesn’t bring attention (at least not the right type) to it. If anything it makes it much easier to sweep under the rug.
      I understand some people use it as a coping mechanism but eh, i always feel very uncomfortable (even physically sick) when I see them.

      I very much agree with this. Since none of my friends attend the same school as I do, I've found myself stuck with a group of people who joke about these things constantly, and it really bothers me. I try my hardest every single day to stay positive. I've even started bringing a wee journal with me which helps me get through the day. I write little positive notes and sketch in it, all the more so now because I just can't stand being around my "mates".
      And as you said, it normalizes it. It's even come to a point in my school where, should you not joke about these things, you're considered an outsider. I think that's despicable. Mental health is extremely important, and joking about it, even if it's a way of coping, is not helping things move forward. We need to talk to each other about these issues. Not simply agree on a general sense of pessimism, depression, anxiety, etc etc etc.

    I think, that humor not only serves to make people laugh, many times it makes visible some problems/Things not normalized of society (in this case of mental illnesses), also rarely a joke that doesn't have a bit of tragedy it's funny. This doesn't mean that there are no offensive memes or that some of them apparently just intend to hurt. But (and I say it as someone who has more than one mental illness) I think we should learn to cope with seeing this content all over the internet, because it's everywhere and we can't stop it, also we shouldn't. All of us have a space to express ourself. We don't have to censure this content, just inform people so they can form a point of view. That's why I like your channel, good video, girl.

    This is a really hard topic to cover, and I think you did it really well.
    For me, it's like this. It's offensive if it's laughing at someone with mental illness, or making light of it in a dismissive way. That's a clear line- the same can be said of most kinds of jokes, in my opinion. Laugh up, not down. The other half of it is, I don't personally want it if it's detrimental to my wellness. Some of those memes reinforce a world view that I am actively trying to change- I have an eating disorder, and I don't want it in control any more. So anything portraying it that way, no matter the intention, is unwelcome. I don't want that to be my truth any more, but that won't change if I keep reinforcing it.
    And, to clarify, there's a huge difference between "offensive" and "unwelcome". When I say "offensive" I mean, I don't think anyone should be making the joke. It is, inherently, bad. When I say "unwelcome" I mean, it's not what, I, personally, want. It could be fine for someone else, but I'm not about to go seeking it out or anything.

    The banana split one is actually about borderline (bpd stands for borderline personality disorder) and people with bpd do a thing called splitting (also known as black and white thinking) which means you either think something or someone is the best or the worst, so the meme was pretty much just a play on words, and as someone who has bpd I thought it was kinda funny but that's just my opinion

    Being someone who suffers from mental illnesses and has suffered with them for many years, I sometimes get a kick out of seeing mental illness/health memes but there definitely is a line that shouldn't be crossed. As you mentioned, being too specific can almost be a form of attacking or mocking someone with that specific illness. When it comes to the light hearted memes that are only ever broad and touch on feelings that everyone has felt, I am glad those are around because it's nice to see that other people are experiencing these things and are openly showing it by reposting/retweeting the meme. Of course there are people who aren't as open with their mental illness and can feel like they're being mocked with even the general memes. One thing that I really do appreciate about the generalized memes is that it helps to open up a conversation about mental illness.

    i see that the most of the time people without mental illnesses tag each other in these memes and it's not good. a lot off teenage girls think they have depression because of they have 'too much' to learn in school or they have social anxiety because they didn't go out one day. i don't have any mental illness but in these situations i think they're disrespectful for the people with mental illness

    • @pastelrose9980
      @pastelrose9980 6 лет назад +18

      I totally get your point but, I think in your comments here you highlight a huge problem with the stigma surrounding mental illness. You don’t know if these girls that you talk about have depression or not. You’re looking at them and making your own judgement thinking no they can’t have depression or anxiety. I don’t agree with self diagnosis necessarily, but if people are feeling this way or think they may be depressed etc we have a responsibility to take them seriously, not pass judgement. This isn’t me in any way attacking you because I know this is a view shared by you and so many others but I think this is an issue that does need addressing.

    • @pastelrose9980
      @pastelrose9980 6 лет назад +4

      There really isn't any need for the sarcastic reply. I was in no way rude and I pointed out that I wasn't trying to attack you. No matter what you say, unfortunately, you can never really know that someone around you isn't mentally ill. It just may be something that they aren't able to share and mental illnesses do present themselves in different ways. For example, atypical depression is the most commonly diagnosed type of depression. I believe it's important to be aware that many people may outwardly seem fine but they really aren't.

    I agree with you. I like some of the memes, like in the beginning of your video. It has always been a coping mechanism for me. But once they talk about specific disorders and suicide it just isn't funny. I just picture kids seeing these memes and sharing them but something feels so off. I'm all for destigmatizing mental illness but to me, especially thinking of young people and undiagnosed people, I think things like suicide and EDs are sort of normalized in memes and they may develop a mindset that those are the answers to their problems. Does that make sense? I know people who have shared those memes but never seek professional help. It's scary to think that these memes could really be their only influence. Maybe I'm being dramatic.

    I don’t like how mental illness memes normalize mental illness and suicidal thoughts. They’re not funny to me, they make me feel even more down on myself, and when I am feeling suicidal, I’m never taken seriously. People tend to laugh and say “me too!”

    I actually run an instagram meme account where I make a lot of memes about my mental health and they've been pretty popular before. I also am currently finishing my senior thesis (woo!) and it's all about how memes about mental health effect someones mental health. And out of 1,000 participants, people with depression and anxiety found solace in memes about their mental health and very few found them offensive. (Not saying some aren't offensive, just that I'm doing my whole thesis on this and people with mental health issues love these memes!)

      I work in mental health as well as having mental health issues & imo having a laugh about things can really help. I've known patients with really dark issues are often the ones to make really dark jokes about their experience, & I do the same about mine so I'm not about to tell them to stop.

    You are actually completely right that suicide jokes aren't funny. People with suicidal thought get easily triggered into actually doing it. If it's not okay for journalists to talk to much about it when someone commits suicide, why would it be okay to publish such triggering memes about it.
    I actually have pretty dark humour, but this just isn't that funny to me. The squidward one is kinda relatable though

      I understand, but you are not everyone. I study journalism and we have a completely different course on how to report about suicide just because it's such a triggering topic. There's figures that prove that by describing a suicide the ratings go up. For example, after the singer of Linkin park commited suicide, papers discribed the way he did it which is unacceptable, there were so much copycats. These memes can be dangerous. I'm not saying y'all should stop making them, but think about what you're doing.

    I feel like the problem is a lot of times young people start diagnosing themselves with mental illness or obsessing over it and it just bothers me. My brother has been diagnosed with several mental illnesses and struggles with it every day. I’m not sure if any of his diagnoses are accurate, but I still feel like he struggles with his mental health. I know a lot of people suffer from mental illness, but it angers me to see people obsess over it. I feel like some people want to suffer from mental illness idk. (I’ve never been diagnosed with anything so I don’t think I have much room to talk)

    i love your videos most of the time but i felt like the general tone of this was "i don't get it, it's not funny to me. also here are some bad points that will justify my personal dislike". which is like, i guess fine, to some extent, because it is in the end just your opinion, but i feel like there is a bias here, obviously these memes lose a lot of their value if you don't find them funny, i just feel like a lot of the time this bias discredits anything you say that may be important and actually a good point? it was pretty chaotic and not really backed up. but maybe i'm just seeing too much in a vid, maybe you just wanted to express these specific concerns. idk. the discussion in the comment section is gr8 tho

      i might have phrased wrong. i am criticizing her opinion, or at least how she forms it/frames it in this video. she seems to only see the bad side and continuously downplays the positive things or people's opinions she doesn't agree with. her opinion is biased, because she uses arguements to justify her dislike and barely acknowleges the "other side", while you seem to acknowledge both.

    Memes have been one of the only things that have worked at destigmatizing mental illness. We aren't hiding how we feel and acting like we're okay all the time (most of us). We can relate to each other and have an open discussion about it more comfortably because we aren't scared to talk about it. I'm so candid about my depression and laughing it off and being like "yep it be like that" has really helped me and helps other peoples not feel like it's something they have to hide. Comedy and laughter is what really helps us through a lot of things. So I see no problem with these memes.
