Whenever it comes to jokes about any incident that deals with death, that's what I measure it against - would I be okay with someone saying that about Sandy Hook? So I'm pretty a big buzz kill about serial killer jokes and Columbine jokes. When enough time has passed, it seems like people forget those were actual experiences real people went through, which is tough.
I really appreciate Sarah's videos like this. Growing up in internet culture can tend to normalize things that shouldn't necessarily be normalized, like talking in the mentioned ways about serial killer and their victims or other topics you've covered in videos like this, so it's nice to have videos like this to remind people, myself included, just because you see something all the time on the internet, doesn't mean that there are no issues with it.

But anyway I really feel like the way we fantasize about serial killers and shooters is due to the fact that we are constantly surrounded by visual depictions of real and fictional violence in tv shows, news feeds, and films that further separate our understanding of how death, murder, rape, and torture in those fictional settings differs from what they actually mean in reality. Like, we see violence all around us to such an extent that some of us cannot really rationalize what real pain and suffering are, and therefore lose empathy for the victims who are never nearly as fleshed out and humanized as the killers. I don't want to sound like those moms who are like "BAN VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES" but I do think what we watch does desensitize us.
It absolutely does! I wish I could find a link to it, but I came across a well-written article some time last year about the "Violent videogames cause violence" debate, and this person succinctly explained that while violent videogames may not trigger the layperson to commit heinous crimes, they do play a part in desensitizing our society to that violence, so when it happens in real life, we've become detached from it so much that we don't react to it. It could easily be applied to movies and television as well. Not to mention our 24-hour news cycle that is constantly covering these events, we never really get a break from it to process our emotions and what happened. Then there's all of the instances where white cisgender men are the perpetrators of these horrific crimes, and the news humanizes them by sharing their identities, and reporting the same two variants of a backstory for these monsters; That they came from broken homes and that's why they "acted out" and mudered someone (to which the public will inevitably blame the mother for, for not "raising him right"), or these men were beloved members of their communities, or well liked in the circle of friends, so the people who thought they knew them get blindsided when the man shoots up a public area or violently murders their partner-- or any woman who told him "No", and we hear the same soundclip of "I had no idea! He always seemed like such a nice/decent guy! I'm shocked!" It gets so tiring honestly.
Very solid points you made there. And there's also the fact that those kind of characters are glamourized and even sometimes REDEEMED when it comes to fictional stuff, so we have this ideal fantasy of "sexy, smart, sassy and secretly hurt men who deserved better before turning into monsters" and I guess some people extend that whole idea to real life killers. That's hella toxic and sick. It's like a dangerous unawareness of reality and the gravity of crimes like that. Real life killers/rapists/etc are unredeemable scum.
When I was 14, I had a phase where I was obsessed with Richard Ramirez/serial killers. I even sent him a letter (yikes) and had his photos on my wall. Needless to say, I grew up and realized how awful that was. Guess not everyone else does. 🤷🏻♀️

Damn I'm glad you realized your mistakes. I was the same way but with death and Gore.. And not like interest or curiosity in horror or the human body or anything like that. I pretended I was obsessed with and LIKED people getting killed and hurt just to be edgy and make people think I was "crazy". It was disgusting and now I really question what the hell was wrong with me at the time. Sometimes I just think that kids get easily influenced that way and do that stuff for attention. It’s interesting to see how many women are actually attracted to serial killers and criminals. I’ve found that many have a sort of nurturing and maternal instinct to try and save him or make him a better person. Idk it’s weird but fascinating 🤷♀️

Men could get away with pretty much any sort of disgusting behavior and a woman is always lined up to "help" him and love him no matter how crazy he is. I love these. I used to be obsessed with serial killers when I was a teenager and used to make a lot of jokes about them, until I met a victim's family and my mindset changed completely.
@Doki Doki Literature club I met the family of Robledo Puch's victim. They used to be my friend's neighbors, and since I was interested in Puch's case, I went to talk to them. They weren't immediate family, but they were still hurt by what happened even after 40 years, so yeah, it was hard.

I actually knew BTK, he was my moms cousins (she was like an aunt to me) neighbor. She used to think it was a little weird how much he was in his shed in the backyard. People in my home town HATE when people joke about him or make memes of him. We'll never get to the point of being so far removed (I hope at least) from his crimes that we can joke about it. The scars run deep in my town and people who didn't live thru the fear will never understand...
thank you for talking about this, i'm going into college for criminology and hate the romanticization of serial killers. just because their killing sprees took place decades ago does not mean they didn't happen. i do have dark humor myself but i know when to draw a line and some of these memes in particular are really disgusting.

I have a BA in History and have basically dedicated my life to learning American history and it BAFFLES me everytime I see a Hamilton 'head canon'. I personally don't choose to listen to or watch Hamilton stuff because I find it revisionist to some extent (not a judgement about people who enjoy it I think the way it sparked an interest in history balances out the simplicity of the story). People feel distanced from history so they no longer take it as an event that was very real and impacted people in a very real way, which I in part blame on the way we tend to teach history as well just a stale timeline of events.

Im glad you’re talking about this 🙏 I have kinda been personally affected because like a year ago I learned that someone I really looked up to was murdered by a well known serial killer. Ever since it has been insanely hard for me. I’m only 21 but have to deal with trying to make people help with keeping his murderer behind bars and dealing with how desensitized people are. Memes, merch and also people posting pictures of corpses online nearly drove me to commit suicide and I know of at least one person that killed himself as a cause of that. I hope I‘ll be able to speak up one day too but atm I really have to stay away from all that. I can’t even watch your videos on these topics even though I love your videos just because it’s so triggering. I wish people would realize that these victims were real people with real families and real future plans. It’s insane to me that so many are talking trash about people that other people lost to murder.

I joined a Serial killers Facebook group that had thousands of members, thinking it would a place to discuss cases, share facts and stories etc. It was not. It was full of people glorifying killers, saying who their favourite was, who had the best techniques, talking about how much they admired them and “looked up to them”. One man made a whole post about how amazing he thought the green river killer was, how cool he thought he was. I left the group after a picture of Richard Ramirez was posted and hundreds of people commented how gorgeous and “misunderstood” he was. No from me. Great video as well 😊

Elsie DeLorean Basically they created this whole fictional back story to his murders that I think really trivialised the true nature of his crimes. They also added in a fictional character that was supposed to be his girlfriend that told him to kill people and they made it so that he was literally possessed by the devil 🙄 The way they mixed fact and fiction together like that is problematic and disrespectful to the families of the people he killed who had to live through the very real nightmare of his crimes.

I’m 14 and knowing the ppl in my age group this doesn’t surprise me. Ab 75% of kids at my high school like having dark senses of humor that is edgy and pushes at boundaries, just like the kids making these memes, bc they want to be different and quirky and they want attention and whatever. Gen Z definitely lacks em apathy and sensitivity ab anything that doesn’t happen to them or someone they know, and none of them r rlly aware that their actions and words r harmful or disrespectful, they just want to stand out. Your high school is not the entire populace. I'm 15 and 90% of my old public school was in to fortnite and meta memes. Way different from yours. That is true to an extent. To be honest, I struggle with empathy with a lot of subjects with things that even I have been through. I cognitively understand, but my emotions are removed from those kinds of things, so I rarely feel bad. The exception is that I am more likely to feel empathy for family members. I totally agree with your thoughts on the growing desensitization of serial killers and their crimes. When the Ted Bundy Netflix movie came out, tons of girls at my high school made remarks about Bundy’s attractiveness and charisma, sometimes to the degree of borderline obsession. When my chemistry teacher who attended FSU when the Chi Omega murder happened, heard word of these girls glorifying Bundy, she basically sat all of them down to talk about what it was actually like living in the same time as him. I think hearing her perspective knocked a lot of the girls out of the “fictionalized trance” that film and social media put them in.
As someone going to school for forensic science and has a very intense interest in criminology and forensic psychology. Your videos are some of my favorites cause they're not only factual but also point out how disgusting these killers were like seriously.

Love seeing panel meme serial killers loving and supporting each other by showing interest in each others crimes. /s Some of those darker memes actually made me laugh just because of *how* dark they were, but I don't think those jokes should be shared in meme format. They are more something you might say irl to a friend, where you're also giving them the opportunity to call you out if you're going to far and potentially start a discussion on a more intellectual level about the topic. I don't like the thought of things like this floating around for everyone to see and maybe even internalize ideas from. The quote about not seeing serial killers as people really exemplifies the attitude of mythologizing horrific things for the sake of turn-off-my-brain entertainment and, more importantly, to the detriment of the actual human beings that have had or still have to live with the consequences. I'm not a native speaker, so I *hope* this makes sense.
We have opinion questions every week at school and one time it was "who do you look up to and why?" A kid wrote Jeffery Dhamer. Why? "He was dedicated to what he did and he was good at it".
I write a lot of short stories to practice my writing for my WIP book and sometimes I write about killers. So I do a lot of research. My FBI agent watching my phone is... worried, to say the least. “How many times do you have to stab someone for them to die” “What poisons are undetectable” “How much blood do you have to lose to die” These are real searches I’ve searched for my books.

Not seeing serial killers as human beings is a great way of never getting to the point of having any relevant and active support system that could prevent more from acting on their urges/thoughts. Like "yeah, let's just put them in jail or eliminate them altogether. They are not mentally instable people."
I totally agree with you. I think sometimes it's hard to differentiate between reality and fiction, especially with memes. I think its okay to like fictional killers, I myself am a fan of tate langdon, but in reality its just really gruesome, and noone would find it funny if it happened to them or their family

When you see that the people making the memes don't think they're hurting the victims, they totally forget that the victims were human beings, and had families who might still be alive and find these. Even worse, for the Columbine shootings you just need to watch the videos the survivors made for the 20th anniversary to realize that it really wasn't long ago, and a lot of people are still very much affected by it. I have trouble hearing those king of people being referred as "the true crime community" because the true crime community I know on most true crime channels here is full of compassionate people who want to try to understand what happened, remember the victims and try to prevent more victims. This is disgraceful

Its something so serious and cruel and disgusting, that even me, when i talk about serial killers to others, I try to be very carefull so... people who do this for “fun”... i dont think so. That Columbine meme in particular blows my mind. It sort of makes sense that it's easy for people to detach some of these killers (Bundy, Ramirez, etc) from the reality of their crimes. Not just because it was so long ago, but also because most people have no experience similar to what the victims went through. Most people don't know what it's like to be kidnapped, assaulted, or (obviously) killed. But school shootings and public shootings are different. They have become so common, kids are scared to go to school. Shootings hit much closer to home in today's culture (unfortunately). Of course, all memes that glorify killers are bad. But it baffles me how anyone thought people would get a kick out of the Columbine one. I don't think I know any high schoolers who would be laughing.
Recently there was a crime in Mexico where a 7 year old girl suffered a death sort of like the black dahlia , given the type of culture that currently mocks everything , I just really hope this doesn't happen in this case . I'm fascinated in the psychology behind serial killers, and trying to figure out what makes them tick. They aren't "uWu sweet cinnamon rolls" though, they are messed up people, who did messed up things. And as much as I would liked to have met Manson before he passed in the prison system, and picked his brain, that would have been scary and terrifying, period.

I really appreciate Sarah's videos like this. Growing up in internet culture can tend to normalize things that shouldn't necessarily be normalized, like talking in the mentioned ways about serial killer and their victims or other topics you've covered in videos like this, so it's nice to have videos like this to remind people, myself included, just because you see something all the time on the internet, doesn't mean that there are no issues with it.

But anyway I really feel like the way we fantasize about serial killers and shooters is due to the fact that we are constantly surrounded by visual depictions of real and fictional violence in tv shows, news feeds, and films that further separate our understanding of how death, murder, rape, and torture in those fictional settings differs from what they actually mean in reality. Like, we see violence all around us to such an extent that some of us cannot really rationalize what real pain and suffering are, and therefore lose empathy for the victims who are never nearly as fleshed out and humanized as the killers. I don't want to sound like those moms who are like "BAN VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES" but I do think what we watch does desensitize us.
It absolutely does! I wish I could find a link to it, but I came across a well-written article some time last year about the "Violent videogames cause violence" debate, and this person succinctly explained that while violent videogames may not trigger the layperson to commit heinous crimes, they do play a part in desensitizing our society to that violence, so when it happens in real life, we've become detached from it so much that we don't react to it. It could easily be applied to movies and television as well.
Not to mention our 24-hour news cycle that is constantly covering these events, we never really get a break from it to process our emotions and what happened. Then there's all of the instances where white cisgender men are the perpetrators of these horrific crimes, and the news humanizes them by sharing their identities, and reporting the same two variants of a backstory for these monsters; That they came from broken homes and that's why they "acted out" and mudered someone (to which the public will inevitably blame the mother for, for not "raising him right"), or these men were beloved members of their communities, or well liked in the circle of friends, so the people who thought they knew them get blindsided when the man shoots up a public area or violently murders their partner-- or any woman who told him "No", and we hear the same soundclip of "I had no idea! He always seemed like such a nice/decent guy! I'm shocked!" It gets so tiring honestly.
Very solid points you made there. And there's also the fact that those kind of characters are glamourized and even sometimes REDEEMED when it comes to fictional stuff, so we have this ideal fantasy of "sexy, smart, sassy and secretly hurt men who deserved better before turning into monsters" and I guess some people extend that whole idea to real life killers. That's hella toxic and sick. It's like a dangerous unawareness of reality and the gravity of crimes like that. Real life killers/rapists/etc are unredeemable scum.
When I was 14, I had a phase where I was obsessed with Richard Ramirez/serial killers. I even sent him a letter (yikes) and had his photos on my wall. Needless to say, I grew up and realized how awful that was. Guess not everyone else does. 🤷🏻♀️

Damn I'm glad you realized your mistakes. I was the same way but with death and Gore.. And not like interest or curiosity in horror or the human body or anything like that. I pretended I was obsessed with and LIKED people getting killed and hurt just to be edgy and make people think I was "crazy". It was disgusting and now I really question what the hell was wrong with me at the time. Sometimes I just think that kids get easily influenced that way and do that stuff for attention. Idk if that's how your situation was, but I guess this comment reminded me of my edgy phase.

@Doki Doki Literature club I met the family of Robledo Puch's victim. They used to be my friend's neighbors, and since I was interested in Puch's case, I went to talk to them. They weren't immediate family, but they were still hurt by what happened even after 40 years, so yeah, it was hard.

I actually knew BTK, he was my moms cousins (she was like an aunt to me) neighbor. She used to think it was a little weird how much he was in his shed in the backyard. People in my home town HATE when people joke about him or make memes of him. We'll never get to the point of being so far removed (I hope at least) from his crimes that we can joke about it. I have a BA in History and have basically dedicated my life to learning American history and it BAFFLES me everytime I see a Hamilton 'head canon'. I personally don't choose to listen to or watch Hamilton stuff because I find it revisionist to some extent (not a judgement about people who enjoy it I think the way it sparked an interest in history balances out the simplicity of the story). People feel distanced from history so they no longer take it as an event that was very real and impacted people in a very real way, which I in part blame on the way we tend to teach history as well just a stale timeline of events.

Im glad you’re talking about this 🙏 I have kinda been personally affected because like a year ago I learned that someone I really looked up to was murdered by a well known serial killer. Ever since it has been insanely hard for me. I’m only 21 but have to deal with trying to make people help with keeping his murderer behind bars and dealing with how desensitized people are. Memes, merch and also people posting pictures of corpses online nearly drove me to commit suicide and I know of at least one person that killed himself as a cause of that. I hope I‘ll be able to speak up one day too but atm I really have to stay away from all that. I can’t even watch your videos on these topics even though I love your videos just because it’s so triggering. I wish people would realize that these victims were real people with real families and real future plans. It’s insane to me that so many are talking trash about people that other people lost to murder.

I joined a Serial killers Facebook group that had thousands of members, thinking it would a place to discuss cases, share facts and stories etc. It was not. It was full of people glorifying killers, saying who their favourite was, who had the best techniques, talking about how much they admired them and “looked up to them”. One man made a whole post about how amazing he thought the green river killer was, how cool he thought he was. I left the group after a picture of Richard Ramirez was posted and hundreds of people commented how gorgeous and “misunderstood” he was. No from me. Great video as well 😊

They also added in a fictional character that was supposed to be his girlfriend that told him to kill people and they made it so that he was literally possessed by the devil 🙄
The way they mixed fact and fiction together like that is problematic and disrespectful to the families of the people he killed who had to live through the very real nightmare of his crimes.

I’m 14 and knowing the ppl in my age group this doesn’t surprise me. Ab 75% of kids at my high school like having dark senses of humor that is edgy and pushes at boundaries, just like the kids making these memes, bc they want to be different and quirky and they want attention and whatever. Gen Z definitely lacks em apathy and sensitivity ab anything that doesn’t happen to them or someone they know, and none of them r rlly aware that their actions and words r harmful or disrespectful, they just want to stand out. This is the age of getting on ppls nerves for humor. Not that I’m trying to sound mean or like I hate my generation or like I think I’m above them, it just gets annoying when everyone in my classes acts like this. Your high school is not the entire populace. I'm 15 and 90% of my old public school was in to fortnite and meta memes. Way different from yours. We dont lack empathy entirely and there are plenty who are aware. From a 15 year old saying this, don't generalize the generation you're in. It makes you sound like a hypocrite. No offense I'm just saying how it sounds, I get where you're coming from. However dark humor has tons of categories and it's not all boundary pushing. That is true to an extent. To be honest, I struggle with empathy with a lot of subjects with things that even I have been through. I cognitively understand, but my emotions are removed from those kinds of things, so I rarely feel bad. The exception is that I am more likely to feel empathy for family members. About dark humour, it's just my style and not a thing for attention.

I totally agree with your thoughts on the growing desensitization of serial killers and their crimes. When the Ted Bundy Netflix movie came out, tons of girls at my high school made remarks about Bundy’s attractiveness and charisma, sometimes to the degree of borderline obsession. When my chemistry teacher who attended FSU when the Chi Omega murder happened, heard word of these girls glorifying Bundy, she basically sat all of them down to talk about what it was actually like living in the same time as him. I think hearing her perspective knocked a lot of the girls out of the “fictionalized trance” that film and social media put them in.
As someone going to school for forensic science and has a very intense interest in criminology and forensic psychology. Your videos are some of my favorites cause they're not only factual but also point out how disgusting these killers were like seriously.

Some of those darker memes actually made me laugh just because of *how* dark they were, but I don't think those jokes should be shared in meme format. They are more something you might say irl to a friend, where you're also giving them the opportunity to call you out if you're going to far and potentially start a discussion on a more intellectual level about the topic. I don't like the thought of things like this floating around for everyone to see and maybe even internalize ideas from.
The quote about not seeing serial killers as people really exemplifies the attitude of mythologizing horrific things for the sake of turn-off-my-brain entertainment and, more importantly, to the detriment of the actual human beings that have had or still have to live with the consequences.

Not seeing serial killers as human beings is a great way of never getting to the point of having any relevant and active support system that could prevent more from acting on their urges/thoughts. Like "yeah, let's just put them in jail or eliminate them altogether. They are not mentally instable people."

When you see that the people making the memes don't think they're hurting the victims, they totally forget that the victims were human beings, and had families who might still be alive and find these. Even worse, for the Columbine shootings you just need to watch the videos the survivors made for the 20th anniversary to realize that it really wasn't long ago, and a lot of people are still very much affected by it.
I have trouble hearing those king of people being referred as "the true crime community" because the true crime community I know on most true crime channels here is full of compassionate people who want to try to understand what happened, remember the victims and try to prevent more victims. This is disgraceful

Film ratio is like the size of the video like a phone’s film ratio is different than a fancy video camera. I think that’s what it’s talking about. She’s using it as an example of a very niche thing for one of those filters
That Columbine meme in particular blows my mind. It sort of makes sense that it's easy for people to detach some of these killers (Bundy, Ramirez, etc) from the reality of their crimes. Not just because it was so long ago, but also because most people have no experience similar to what the victims went through. Most people don't know what it's like to be kidnapped, assaulted, or (obviously) killed. But school shootings and public shootings are different. They have become so common, kids are scared to go to school. Shootings hit much closer to home in today's culture (unfortunately). Of course, all memes that glorify killers are bad. But it baffles me how anyone thought people would get a kick out of the Columbine one. I don't think I know any high schoolers who would be laughing.
Recently there was a crime in Mexico where a 7 year old girl suffered a death sort of like the black dahlia , given the type of culture that currently mocks everything , I just really hope this doesn't happen in this case . Thanks for presenting these type of discussions , awareness is needed to not be desensitized .

I'm fascinated in the psychology behind serial killers, and trying to figure out what makes them tick. They aren't "uWu sweet cinnamon rolls" though, they are messed up people, who did messed up things. And as much as I would liked to have met Manson before he passed in the prison system, and picked his brain, that would have been scary and terrifying, period.
Me too, I'm interested in what drove these people to commit the crimes they did but would I want to meet any of them? Not in a million years.

about 7 minutes in, when you mentioned 70's serious killers being regarded on the same level as a urban myth, it really reminds me of the way Ed Guine (i'm probably spelling that wrong) got transformed in 60's and 70's horror media as, just like the killers you've mentioned today, a kind of mythical "legend" for lack of better words. seems like a pattern i suppose. it's just now instead of movies and books loosely based on the killer(s) it's tasteless memes. yaaay

Richard actually killed a child. It was his first murder. She was a 9 year old and they found out Richard was guilty for it in 2009.

Great that you are talking about this! The internet truly is a strange place. A lot of these things I would consider past just some dark humour. These people are doing exactly what these serial killers want: giving them attention.
Half the time with the serial killer memes I'm just laughing uncomfortably bc it's so bad.
there is a difference between dark humor and pushing aside the horrible things anyone has done or idolizing them to have a laugh at a meme.
As someone who is also interested in True Crime and psychology, it makes me sick to my core knowing how ignorant people are to glorify serial killers. I see it everywhere, on social media, movies/TV, and even in novels. I’m tired of it too! 🤦♀️😂 great video as always!
