Every Johnny Marr breakdown is "so yeah, I was comin out the chip shop when i thought to play this (plays most beautiful thing ever written) which is quite nice".
"So, back then I bought a guitar and this is the first thing I played" **plays a bit of a really complex Smiths song** "I haven't played it in 25 years, so let's see if I can still play it right" **plays it exactly as he ever did**
The melodies this guy came out with in his 20's were genius. He will always be my favourite guitarist and seeing him play songs that meant everything to me in these clips is incredible

It is said that Johnny was a little bummed out about Morrissey not coming up with better lyrics for this haunting masterpiece Johnny created, but I thought the lyrics added a wonderful and humorous contrast. Not EVERYTHING had to be as deep and as dark as Last Night I Dreamt. That’s what made them such a great team. There are no shitty licks and no shitty lyrics. Everything was quality between these two men.
He wasn't bummed out, he said recently that lyrics don't really bother him... Personally though I really think if this riff would have had deeper, more meaningful and emotional lyrics it could have really been a classic. Love the Smiths but it was a waste I think.
It’s so weird, I’ve learned this song effectively note-for-note, but for some reason whenever JOHNNY plays it, it comes off as more ethereal and haunting. What a beautiful track.
I don’t think you could have said it better. Pure pure class. Then Andy rourke comes into it with the magic of Morrissey, it does not get better than that x
Considering how obscure this song is compared to most other Smiths songs it honestly has one of the most beautiful riffs I've ever heard. I could listen to it on repeat for hours.
Johnny is the man. I'm 50, enough experienced to understand who are the guitarists to avoid. I play guitar, but I don't know how to approach his style. I avoid him. He is the best.
I always wonder what Johnny thought of Mozzers lyrics for this song. They are so throw-away and the guitar line Johnny wrote deserved something epic imho
Johnny was super proud of the guitar part he wrote for the song, and he was hoping Morrissey would come in with something just as good in the lyrics. However, when Johnny heard Morrissey's lyrics, he was quite disappointed. He laughs about it in retrospect, but he really was hoping for something a bit more profound.
@@riperadishes5071 even in the most recent answers to this question on his Instagram (and also in the interview at the university last year) he said that it is a myth and that he was never bothered by the lyrics but people always want him to be (to be fair there is an interview of some years ago in which he's pushed into saying that he would have liked different lyrics). In the interview at the university he compared it to his having painted a landscape like the cliffs of Dover and Morrissey coming and drawing a camel on top of it, I believe. He also said that that contrast was what made a lot of their songs great and that he noticed this approach in other artists (Pet Shop Boys) and that he now uses it in his own songs too (see Armatopia). He also praised the verse about Anthony and Cleopatra.
I always felt that the song is about longing for love but Morrissey is disguising the underlying meaning with frivolous and immature (and funny) lyrics. To me it's evident in the line, "send me the pillow, the one that you dream on. And I'll send you mine", which is achingly beautiful.
God, its all available these days you lucky folk, back in day you had to work it out from record ! ( good luck with working out what johnny was doing !!! ) my recollection is a lot of guitar players playing smiths stuff WRONG !! Now ? Johnny 'll show you !!
Fucking brilliant ! Goes to show many songs by The Sithgs are almost better as instrumentals. I think its so cool that Mr. Marr has allowed us to see the inner woirkings. Anyone not familiar with the album he did with Matt johnson , you have got to get it . I have it on LP of course

The melancholy and darkness that riff can transmit is incredible

And joy. All of this, it is magic.
i always thought this riff was more calm and peaceful than dark
The reverb on his amp goes up to eleven.
He's not shy of delay either :)
And I think he has a tremolo effect as well. All the effects just add to the challenge of picking out the notes by ear ;)

Nah. Maybe if the smiths made music for 40 years
Nah one of the best yh but not the best

Arguably the best guitarist but he never wrote lyrics in the smiths so can’t call him the best songwriter.

Fantastic guitarist, but not the greatest. That title belongs to Mark kmopfler.
Now this is a true Smiths fan. Even got the guitar and hair cut. that's dedication.
To write such melodic songs at that young age is crazy! A fan since the beginning and till my end!

I love the way he incorporates the end of the songs doubled up riff into the main riff there at the end
just crazy
For me the best, most beautiful, and one of the most technically difficult guitar licks ever written
The opening notes just brought back memories and emotions for me. My favorite Smith’s track.
