    1. Underpay your employees
    2. They have to rely on tips
    3. Employees demand a raise
    4. Reject it since they're already tipped

@@ferdtheterd3897 that's how it should be, imo.
The field isn't one you can practice on for a long time, without sufficient care.
I wish, that there were an actual tipping culture for services in hospitals and other institutions, as well!
I mean, tipping seems even okay in hotels, though anybody working there will most probably receive a higher wage, if not included in outsorced working forces (like cleaning personnel, in a lot of places).
As soon as I saw my local goods shop (whatchamacallit) suffering from inflation, i even started tipping them.
I rarely take their nickels back, now!

It's more company greed. Fast food joints ask for tips now. It's the stupidest shit ever. Why the hell would you tip someone for doing their job. I'm specifically talking fast food. You go in, quickly order, and get your food and leave. That stupid machine ask for anywhere between 15% tip to 30%. The f*ck they do to earn that?
It's seriously out of control. It's also become a way for places to not pay their employees properly "because they earn it via tip" so they have to break their backs getting us food and catch flack for the cooks mistakes.

Hello, I have been working in this “tipping,” industry for a majority of my life. In reality, you don’t really pay for people’s services when you just go to a restaurant. You only pay for it when you tip. Also, I have traveled to countries where tipping wasn’t included, so far from my judgement, it seems people who don’t get tipped in those countries generally do not care about giving excellent guest service. FYI, I’m not talking about a server being funny or charismatic. I’m talking about overall “do your job professionally,” type work.
Now, if tipping stopped completely then I will understand and retire from this industry specifically. However, if tipping ceases to exist, then your food and beverages in these restaurants will DOUBLE. Psh, you think corporations are guna let you slide in taking their pennies from them cuz of some laws?

@@calleocho2107 in my eyes say they do double the rates. What then? I’m assuming you dont mean super high class reservation needed places, and mean more applebee’s/TGI fridays etc. As it is most people are hesitant to pay the $50+ you can expect from a dinner for two, and thats excluding tip. I’d reeeeeally hope people wouldnt pay 100+ for what is, at best mediocre. When it comes to at the very least chain restaurants and supermarkets, starving them out would be the best. I honestly don’t think its possible, but look at how walmart literally threatened to close stores that were being stolen from, and those losses were something like 2% of their revenue. They HAAAAAATE losing money, so if they charge more knowing their service and product is 5/10 on a good day, they’re gonna take a massive hit and have to do something. Unfortunately people will just bite the bullet and eat the cost since complaining while enjoying convenience is easier than going without to actually make some sort of difference.

@@dudesinashoe7812 if that’s the case, then yes more Applebee’s/TGI’s would take over the restaurant industry due to its cheaply foods. The restaurant industry would pull a Walmart for sure. Close all the already expensive restaurants since no one will buy their new even more expensive prices and just pocket all the savings. However, the service will forever change. You can’t expect people to care anymore if your food came out cold or wrong or their service isn’t good. That’s like being upset that your burger from Burger King wasn’t made with love lol. Half of the people that have never worked in the industry would NEVER want to work in it once they know how annoying it can get. For the record, anyone who is hesitant to pay $50+ is either too cheap or needs to reevaluate their budget on life in general lol. I understand 150+ though

My point is that I have to pay for an entire extra invisible meal just because the owner of the restaurant can't bother paying the people that make them their money. And they probably don't even get most of those tips anyway. I've heard from friends and other ppl, of managers and/or owners, finessing the workers' tips. Whether it be by receiving the customer's bill or in events such as weddings, keeping the envelope full of tips to be distributed among the other staff.

When I was in Egypt for holiday, everybody expected tips. It was charming to some degree, because they told me "You don't have to, but the tip would be for me and my service. If you were happy, I would appreciate it" or something along these lines. They were all friendly and thankful for the tips, so I didn't feel scammed (I was scammed a bit, but that's a different story). It was a bonus for politeness, not mandatory. The tipping culture in the USA is so bizarre to me. They act entitled to tips. Also, in the video it is said "We tip everybody except the homeless". That really made me think about things. In medieval times, people were happy to give money to homeless people. There are cases of communities ordering homeless people to be moved close to them, so that they can give them money regularly. This has something to do with christianity before the reformation. In the USA, people are way more religious (and even Christian) than we are in eastern Germany, but they do the opposite of what good old medieval Germans did, which is giving money to homeless people. If that's true, that means the USA's culture is, in some way, less social than the culture of the so-called dark ages, which is always portrayed as being unfriendly for some reason.

I was taught that tipping is equivalent to looking down on someone. I wouldn't tip if the service was beyond excellent, and the service providers would be ok with it. Very few times there are tip jars on the counter but it's far from compulsory and just if you have some loose change in your pocket that is too insignificant to use anyway.

I remember one time me and my friends went a ramen shop randomly one night. Their service was terrible and so was the food to the point we all literally felt sick the next day.when we paid thrm and got up to leave one of the guys followed us to the door and stopped us asking for tip (mind u were all like 17-18 at the time) so I told him me we paid he said but we served so I again told him we paid. He looked at me like I was insane and I felt bad but truthfully we didn’t have the money and neither the food or service was actually worth a tip we waited an hour to even get our food.

Tips in Britain are very rare. You only ever tip if they did an extraordinary job. The only time I've seen someone tip was when I was 11 and getting my hair cut and washed and all that stuff. Mum was really impressed by the end that she let the hairdressers keep the £2 ($2.54) change and the hairdressers acted so grateful for that (you could buy full sized cadbury's chocolate bars for £2 back then, so it's not like it's a lot of money). Tipping in America is weird because it's expected to give 20% of the bill extra while over here the workers are so happy if you give them a couple quid more for doing a great job. Makes tipping more special if it's rare.

I did a count of how much money I lose to tipping every month, it’s outrageous. Once I was able to figure that out I started realizing how much is actually unnecessary. I’ve made it a policy to only tip for the service or product I paid for. Cashiers are a big no, they don’t provide customer service or make the food.

    • @jonathanbowers8964

I agree. I have never tipped cashiers. They get paid at least minimum wage (and usually a bit more than minimum wage). The BS came about during the pandemic as a way to "support small businesses" but quickly became a way for mega corps to make an extra buck. Unless the position is a "tipped position" (or is a hairdresser) I don't tip.

Tipping in America isn’t even a joke anymore. I was with a group of friends at a Rainforest Cafe. The Service for 6 people wasn’t too bad, but for my first time there I thought it all the theatrics was really impressive. I made a JOKE about not tipping because they should have a lot of money anyways and almost everyone glared at me. I told them I was joking and they all laughed.
I make dark humored jokes typically, so I was surprised this of all things had them questioning. Had I not been laughing already, I think they would’ve thought I was serious.

Put it up front how much is the food price, if they say the food will be too expensive (food price is taxed, tips aren't maybe), it doesn't matter, If I see the menu and it cost $300, I'll stand up and walk out the door. If they put $$250 then bill come $312.5, it's a scam.
