Ant-Man's abilities are quite versatile actually, they provide stealth capabilities, he can be as dangerous as a bullet, he can summon a fleet of insects at his whim, he could even alter the size of objects. He is not useless by any means.
When it comes to superheroes when something is Goofy that specific Writer usually meant for it to be. Superheroes have been around for 80 years, with the Target demographic being children. So they will make goofy content for the children, some of those children will grow up and want serious content about their favorite characters. But then they need to make more goofy content to get the children of the next generation. It's basically a war, A war that is bigger than Marvel vs DC. It is the Tone War, what Tone should the stories of a man in a Bat costume be? How realistic can a story about a superhero be, if he's in poverty there's literally not enough hours in the day for him to make enough money to survive and be a superhero.
