Nole might end up the goat (to me that's most slams).
But for my pleasure: Roger and Rafa will always be top2. I'm NOT hating on Novak.
After 50 years watching tennis, among clear legends, its a VISUAL thing. Nole is legendary, just not as pretty to watch.
I have friends who hate tennis cuz they believe it's just ball back and forth. Well, any attempt to VISUALLY get them into the sport, would always be with Roger and/or Fedal footage :)
Nole over the last 7 yrs or so just wins. So, yes, hes a great champion.
He has everything in his arsenal. But overall, I get bored watching him. What else can I say.
The variety of Roger's attacking style has been breathtaking over the years.
And Nadal's stylish ball striking make him nearly equally mesmerizing to watch.
I feel bad in a way for Nole, for my personal lack of interest in watching him.
But to me taste, tennis has always been about "eye candy".
It's why in previous eras, my fave legends to watch were Edberg, Sampras on grass, Connors fierceness. Etc.
Currently, I am hoping SHAPOVALOV can blossom into a consistent champion, cuz his STYLE embraces elements of both Rafa and Roger :)

That Hamburg 2008 final is a bit overlooked - strange match, which (along with the Monte Carlo 2008) final should have easily gone Fed's way. In Monte Carlo one month earlier Fed was leading with a break in the first set, and in the second it was 4-0 - he still managed to lose 5-7, 5-7. The final in Hamburg was even more spectacularly and inexplainably lost, Fed was absolutely beating the crap out of Nadal in the first set and led 5-1, then he just disintegrated. Nadal patiently waited for his errors and Fed instead winning in two sets lost in three. I don't want to take anything from Nadal, his 2008 RG campaing was just incredible, but the humiliating onesidedness of the final was in my opinion not only a consequence of Nadal' relentless consistency but also determined by Fed's memory of his mental implosion in those two finals

    • @regulusarcturus
      @regulusarcturus 4 года назад +1

Because the gras season leading up to Wimbledon used to be two weeks long. You can't have an ATP 1000 a week after a Slam or a week before a Slam.
Even now that there's three weeks, it would be quite pointless to shove a random new tournament that players would have to play between two very important slams. Lots of players skip grass events prior to Wimbledon.

Rafa thrives on feeling hes the underdog even if hes not. Thats why you always hear him or uncle Toni always say Federer is the GOAT. It may bring him the highest total of GS in the end due to handling pressure better. But his lack of variety will always bring debate at to NADAL being the GOAT. to be fair Federer prefers thinking he is the GOAT to play his best. Ok i will shut up now and enjoy the tennis.

Still as far as raising the actual popularity of the sport, its still mostly been fedal.
Nole is GREAT champion. A legend. 17 slams during fedal? Comon, some credit. BUT... Fedal are so much prettier to watch. That's why (sorry Nole) they will always be the most popular. Slavic people obviously support Nole. But the world enjoys the "eye candy" of Fedal matches :)
If you combine ALL matches between the THREE, I cant prove it, but I bet 90% of the Winners (shots), are from Fedal. Like goals in football (soccer), TO ME, I watch tennis for its beauty. Not to just support a winning player. Shrug.
      *I respect Nole's greatness*
But I always experience greater pleasure with the "other two guys" hehe.
