Guns of Tarkov: The FN SCAR

  • Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb Savant is joined by video gamer, Twitch streamer, and RUclipsr Jesse Halteman, aka JesseKazam, to take a look at the FN SCAR military battle rifle. In video game circles the SCAR is often regarded as the "best" gun a player can choose. The status of Fabrique Nationale's SCAR in the real world is more ambiguous. Some shooters love it, others not so much. The SCAR is extremely lightweight and its recoil is gentle, but that combo also makes it an "optic killer." The SCAR's modularity makes it very adaptable and upgradable, and it uses M4 / M16 magazines and ammo, which eases military logistics. Features like the folding stock, the ability to fire with that stock folded, a charging handle that can be positioned the left or right side of the rifle, and ambidextrous magazine release and selector lever make the SCAR an excellent weapon for real world special forces users AND gamers. The newest addition in "Escape from Tarkov" is the SCAR 16 and the SCAR 17 Heavy in the player's weapon options. And isn't it good to have more options?

      It’s not a standard issue rifle in the USA. The 17 has been selected in a DMR role, the 16 was never adopted and never made it past testing phase, it was pretty much universally hated and pointless due to all the m4 variants. Even among the one that used the Scar 17 platform it does not get a lot of love.

    It's a nice weapon platform but most modern militaries are very cost-oriented when it comes to outfitting their troops. Nevertheless it's used by a lot of police/CT teams worldwide, and some militaries such as the Portuguese Army use it too. I personally find it aesthetically pleasing and I imagine it's probably a fine rifle, however I'll never know until I get a bit of trigger time on one myself!

    • @TheSlasherJunkie
      @TheSlasherJunkie 2 года назад

      It depends. The Bushmaster ACR / Magpul Mosada was designed entirely so that Special Forces could get the SCAR for half the price. They ultimately passed, so it went into MW2 and fizzled out in the civilian market.
      By and large cost is the single biggest factor, but the bigger militaries have had a doctrine shift in the last decade to really change that.

    Got both. I understand why SOCOM decided to stay with the M4 / Mk18 style platforms. As you pointed out, it’s about bulk. The Mk18 is slim and compact, with good ergonomics. It makes for a faster handling gun when doing CQB. And the HK 416 gives you a cleaning running gun like the FNFAL, but adds a little weight.
    If I had to choose carry either the MK17 or a LMT L129 as a battle rifle I’d choose the SCAR. That’s based on weight. But in the long run I’d put my money on the LMT M129 or the KAC M110 style of rifle with respect to durability.

    Just a suggestion for Jesse:
    When Caleb is talking and explaining something for a bit longer, don't say "yeah", "aha", "interesting", etc. all the time. In a private conversation it's absolutely appropriate because that's how you show that you're paying attention to the other person. But in these videos Caleb is not only talking to you but to the audience also and it's distracting to hear somebody else "interrupting" the speaker.
    Please, don't take it as an offense, you really seem like an open minded, curious, nice person, just paying some attention to this minor thing would make the videos even more enjoyable.

Countries that do not have big enough firearm industries are adopting the HK416 because of the price : cheaper than the Scar for same performances. That was one major argument from France to choose the HK over the Scar to replace their FAMAS. Only Portugal adopted the Scar-L to replace their G3. I don't know why, maybe FN Herstal made something about the price to have a massive adoption in the hope to enlight this gun.

For some people these types of guns are their bitcoin. They don’t buy them to shoot them or to utilize them properly but to make a huge dollar on it same with HK. I saw the same thing happened quite recently with the bourbon industry. Nowadays people mostly only buy really good bourbon to resell it at a higher price.
