Thank you Mr. Belafonte for making my childhood so awesome!! You will be missed but never forgotten ♥️
Did he passed away? 😳
@@kimkaykae yes unfortunately he passed yesterday 😢
@@chesirecat17 He was one of my favorite singers and I'm truly heartbroken 💔😥 My mom and aunt knew him personally. He used to visit our island a lot and stayed at the hotel together with his wife, where my family worked. He took a liking to my aunt and told her he was already married but he would like to introduce her to his brother. Unfortunately, that didn't happen or he might have become my family through marriage. He was truly a nice and kind person according to my family. May his Soul Rest in Favor of God 🙏
Any 90s kids fell in love of Belafonte's music from the Beetlejuice movie?
Not a 90’s kid… but yes
Simpsons actually lol!
@@SlamChulo muppets actually, for me atleast.
Technically, I was born in the 80s, but yes, very much so.
Who wud have even heard of beetlejuice? I am a big fan

Who are the lowlifes that dislike this? It's Harry Belefonte for shit's sake. He could sing the phone book and make it sound good.
@SuziQ809.
Phone Book...Encyclopedia...Thessaurus...Atlas...👌👏👏😉😁❤
He was a True Talent that We were priviledged to have been honoured by His music/acting and humanitarianism.❤❤
R.I.P. Mr Bellafonte. You will be missed.
The Kidiies of today don't know what a phone book is! Let alone good music!!!
It's probably sexist men😂
You’re not kidding! 😂 He is pure magick!
@@AmericanBeautyCorsetyour kidding, of course we know what phone books are, and many do know good music 🙄
Ever since the world began, woman always be teachin' man.
The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror II and Beetlejuice brought me here.
ah, yes it did. I knew that voice sounded familiar. also, Props to the Simpsons. Long Live Classic Simpsons.
Yes
The Grateful Dead brought me here
Hahahaha yeah it’s the segment of Treehouse of Horror 2 with the monkeys paw and they wish to be famous. I think after the Simpsons version of this song, that’s when Otto says “man this is gettin outta hand” about the Simpsons extreme fame. I’m an absolute Simpsons fanatic, it is the greatest TV show ever created. Treehouse of horror 2 was the first Treehouse of horror where they really hit it out of the park, the raven segment of the first one is just so awful that it tanks the whole episode, the first two segments are still pretty good though. But the Raven segment is not funny at all and it’s extremely boring, but that was back when the Simpsons was in its second season and the original writers of the show would use old references, this one was especially old, like 1800s era. The only good thing about the Raven segment was James Earl Jones as narrator, I believe he also played one of the Rigellians that comments that Homers “wife is quite a dish” because it really sounds like him. I love how the first few seasons of treehouse of horror would parody twilight zone episode, once again showing the original writers dated references but the twilight zone isn’t nearly as old as the Raven, and the twilight zone is also entertaining media unlike the Raven.
Beavis and Butthead brought me here 😊
Loved his music in the 50s. Mr. Belafonte left a beautiful legacy in music, activism, and film.
I remember working for PBS in 1995 in NYC and my executive producer boss got a call that I answered from a guy who said he was Irving Burgie. I said, "hold up - are you Lord Burgess?!" When he answered that he was, he laughed and asked how such a young men ( I was 25) knew who he was. I said, "Of course I know who you are - YOU'RE A LEGEND! I grew up with your music!" He was pleased and I was a little starstruck. Best phone call I've ever taken.
❤
I've been listening to Belafonte's 50's RCA recordings since childhood. They certainly belong in the Library of Congress national recording registry,if they aren't there already.Belafonte is a national treasure,as he has been for years,as a brilliant artist and voice if social conscience.
That should read"of social conscience"
he is in schomburg repository already ... and this is first time I'm realising he did more than one version of this song... prefer the live version he did in Japan
me too
you better belive it
Me too! I must've played Day-o a bazillion times! Drove my poor folks crazy I bet! He was SO good!
Rejoice In Paradise Mr. Belafonte - when we all get to heaven.

Yeah, the most coverest cover band ever covered a Black artist. Wow.
The jam, the blues, r&b, rock and roll...
All from slavery days, so, $thanks for the contribution, eee, I guess...
@@jonathanfrancis109 The Dead from Jerry's love of music, played songs from so many eras. When John Scheer a concert promoter told Jerry that one of the original writers of a New Orleans song being played by the Dead was alive but not receiving any $$$, Jerry had the Garcia Band record another of her songs and gave all the $$$ to her. They also found out she didn't have a refrigerator, so they sent her a top of the line new one. When she got it she told people that " some Dead people" sent her a fridge!
@@rperkins723 good.
I remember the album from my childhood - nearly sixty years ago. And his performance with his band at Carnegie Hall in 1957 was even better. My father had that album, too.
you irish? :)
Me too! My sisters and I would listen to his album all the time! Such joy 😊
I Love all the pauses in this song. Critically important - makes the song so much more impactful & enjoyable. Harry Balafonte was a very clever, intelligent man. He was able to brilliantly cash in on the Calypso craze & make a literal killing. That demostrates incredible creative flair & ingenuity. RIP Harry Belafonte 🙏 🕊
He brightened up my life
I had the great pleasure of meeting Sherry Belafonte out in Hollywood Hills..she was so down to earth, but what could you expect?! She definitely takes after her dad! She looked so much like him..I treated her like a real person coz a lot of celebs want their privacy and live their normal lives....In our conversation I had mentioned loving claymation and suggested she watch the cute movie "Mad Monster Party"
I say let us put man and a woman together

My great Grandmother would dance all over the house to Mr. Belafonte when I was a kid. ❤❤❤
0:22 (stops tape) "Barbara! Come with me down to the store!"
😂😂😂
A song about woman being smarter than man would have been very controversial in the 50’s lol
Wow this is actually from the movie that I'm watching right now it's called Beetlejuice!
I was just telling Barbara about this offer on the house-
No jane!...
"attention Kmart shoppers!"
Thanks for the memories Harry. RIP king.
Is there anything they won't do?!
R.I.P Harry we loved your music.❤
Wow, damn. That's some heavy shit for a song man
Especially in that time!
You know its true

Beetlejuice put me onto Harry Belafonte when I was a kid, and since then I've loved his music.
Like a *slap* to people who say "Women ☕" 😂😂
Grateful Dead's version is amazing!
We slipped this one into our sets off and on for years. it was a favorite with the crowd. ...think caribbean waterfront bar sailors, locals and tourists... It worked! Fun to play.
Finally got that Simpsons reference
Damn, this stuff takes me back to when I was about five years old!

Going to miss you so much- thank you for your music and politics!

Man out much time until the cast of The Amazing digital circus starts singing this in “The Amazing Digital Circus goes Calypso”?
Beavis and Butt-head (of all morons) brought me here. Beavis used the title line of this song to riff a Japanese music video.
Beavis was always the real genius of the operation

Remembering my daddy bimbo his favorite songs😍😍😍
Played the album last night at the BAR - RIP HB!
So a movie from 1988 “Beetlejuice” brought me here/ in 2023 Beetlejuice 2 is coming and I wonder will they play Harry Belafonte in B2 ? That injection of Belafonte was due to Adams character played by Alec Baldwin, and he looks nothing like he did in 88 so not to sure about that or the original house, may not have anything to do with that but if they do they would have to figure out how to inject them into the story, as they mentioned in Beetlejuice, they were bound to that house for 125 years , and would still be there
Smart man and extremely talented.
Great Calypso singer!
Great fun song....when it first came out but I wonder what society would say now? No matter I'll still love this album!!
It would fit in well with the "Me Too" climate lol
I think it does have a few smart ass sexist-adjacent jokes in it, but the overall tone of the song is earnest, he genuinely means it when he say women are smart, but even in the joking tone of the song he takes to point out how society overall does look down on women's intelligence.
I have this record 😁👍 everyone blessed
pov: im a demon, 2 ghosts, and a girl trying to get her parents out of the house
