- "This calypso cover first appeared in the Dead's setlists in 1981, and settled into a second-set pre-Drums slot, played occasionally and always getting the crowd dancing. Sometimes, when they were in the mood, Brent would take a verse, always welcome." - David Lemieux

Brent looking like he walked off the job at the coal mines and stepped onto the magic bus to rock the keys and sing with his awesomely unique voice. RIP player.
Well said!!
@NLTDB3S You know your piano masters; ain't nothin' like some boogie woogie country man in the morning. Smells like 420 &... victory.
Beauty.
I have a hard time trying to think of a better singer and musician than Brent !!! R.I.P
The GOAT on the keys!
Jerry’s face and little dance he does when Brent comes in on the second verse. So priceless!❤️💀
I looked at the screen just in time to catch that. My first thought was Jerry had to pee. Of course, I'm at the hospital hooked up to an IV so that's on my mind.
I watch this video so much just for that part :) I love Jerry/Brent interactions
The rare occasion when each man was keyed in, on time and focused. But yes, Brent especially steps in and goes next-dimension. And YES YES, Jerry catches the spark, breaks off that Snoopy dance, and proceeds to SHRED!
@@tonygardner5717 I wish there was a love reaction to this comment.

Brent proved without a doubt that he can do what the big boys do.
The mind meld going with the flow - fun !
That’s my main man right there!!!
Totally 💯
Brent was the big boys. Gah damn i miss those guys, brent was a special type of guy. First year with the band and on go to heaven he had two songs of his on that album. Stepping up to bat in the same league where Barlow and Hunter were pouring out their hearts and their poetry was a ballsy and powerful move from Brent and he made it work in a huge way. That first album and year of his in the band, it cemented his place for me roght then and there. It only got bwtter and better through the years, he was literally opening up and blossoming in his final years. Fuck its such a tragedy he had to leave when he did. The band never came back from his departure
Brent was such a fantastic addition to the Grateful Dead, just perfect
Oh gosh yes
The best
So damn good
Big fan 🙂
Brent’s my fave. I adore what he touched on the Dead.
Brent died the following year. RIP to a great musician, singer, songwriter.
nothing beats seeing jerry so lively and dancing around during this one
That’s exactly what I was thinking! 💕
Yes! It even eclipses Bobby’s short shorts, which is difficult to do. :)
And playing a great solo too
Brent is on fire too
Hell yeah man! It’s freakin awesome to see him having fun.
I just want someone to look at me like Jerry looks at Brent
Good bumper sticker!!
Me tooooooo!!!!!
Or Bobby at Bret 6:45 😊
You are correct!!! Love it ❤❤❤
Brent was the best keyboardist the Dead ever had. I love when I hear him and Jerry jam.
Brent was the best songwriter and musician they had on keyboards.
a tragic loss.
Keith was pretty amazing from when he joined and into 74/75. By 76-77 I still liked his playing but 78 isn't often on my playlists. Brent was well rounded on anything with keys it seemed AND he could sing. Vince had a better vocal range and he filled the bench and was a very nice guy but when stepping into Brent's shoes....sort of like anyone trying to replace the real or imagined Jerry playing, singing, delivery, the grin he'd get with onstage, what he'd see in the closer audience seats, or what we'd see of his personal life at good times. Love these videos and music.
Thanks Brent for making Jerry dance! Brent made it fun again!
This was one of those tasty little nuggets that let us know that the Dead were feeling us as much as we were them. Omg I looooooove it. So good.
When Jerry is Happy, The whole world is Happy
When I'm sad, Jerry makes me Happy!
Indeed brother. "Will it be fun?" JG
🙏🏽🙏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💔
I'm an old deadhead but I'm still just a rookie. God bless all of us. And that means you too.
I'm just an old-timer but I'm still just a rookie I agree Jerry is in control of the world. That's why we have people like us to cook for them and 10 for them and make sure that are okay.

Technically my first show was in '72 in Veneta at the country fair. I was 9 so I don't remember anything except for trying to catch up with my German mother who was fascinated with the scene and loved it!
I was there for the '82 show. I used to have an excellent tape from that show I took all the way to Panama in the mid 80's .
I remember "Women" from several shows. Thank you for the memories!
I used to often be unsure if it was this song or Aiko-Aiko , atleast until the singing, but I didn't care as long as there was some "jamming" between every few lines.
Summer of 89 was just 🔥🔥
First Grateful Dead concert at 17 years old, being told my an older lady head, "Leave nothing but your footprints 👣" I will never forget!!!
I was at this show!! Brent was on fire and the boys were feeding off his passion for playing with everything he had. Amazing show from first song to the last .
I can’t even imagine how great the whole show must’ve been.
Me Toooooo, Woodstock"s !!!! Great Show Normal July 4th In Buffalo !!!!
This run of shows was amazing.....I was in Foxboro on the 2nd, and the way Jerry and Brent were interacting was fantastic
@@buckykattguitar I think I saw you there brother. At least before the show. 🤗
Thank you for singing along to Not Fade Away if you did! Best rendition of that song by far!
Jerry and Brent's eye contact... Priceless
I love what Brent added to them and am glad they got to spend the time together. I love this version the most. They all seem very happy here.
This show is proof positive that setlists don't mean shit on paper. One of the best I saw.
Fuc yeah!
I saw them in Foxboro on the 2nd and it was as good as this one....Jerry and Brent were amazing
i agree.

I can see why this was Bobby's favorite year of playing in the band.
he's said that? interesting...
Interesting! That's the only year that I really got to tour. 🤩 SO blessed!!! 💗
I watch this weekly because it makes me happy mostly and kinda sad at the same time. This is musical fine wine.
just a rippin' version, with Jerry reacting to Brent as he so often did. First the grin, then the....dance!!! so great to see.
The Brent years are by far my favorite wish I would have been around then.
I just watched this show in its entirety last week!
Brent passed 10 years before I was even born & I miss him so much
Now I am a newer fan here and I've never heard such gnarly vocals from Brent. Damn good performance , no surprise there. \m/
Newer fan here too! Brent is fantastic!
Nice dude. Another one I discovered with him singing is "Blow Away" Great band
Dancing’ Jerry is my new favorite Jerry.
When Brent hit that verse!! Goosebumps. I was lucky and found the Dead early as a 14 year old in 86. First shows were 87 and saw lots of Brent. Last shows were Birmingham 95. RIP B&J. Thanks for the music. (Jerry's reaction to the end of Brent's verse - priceless!!)
Those were great years!!!
Loved taping these outdoor shows. Brent was certainly able to bring instant life, to a generic set list on off nights. Still not sure if it was the band that was off those nights or if I just wasn't off enough.
This was my first show. Age: 14 years.
@@brianoconnell41 I was 5. Thank God for RUclips and DVDs or I'd have never seen a dead show.
Did Whole Spring Tour Birmingham Was 2 Show"s As Yo I Feel Birmingham Was Best Stop That Spring, Above 3 at Philly 2 at N.C, 4 at ATL, 2 at TENN,2 at BIRM,& 1at TAMPA !!!!
this is exactly what i wanted today!
Lol - you can see Brent call his own number for the second verse starting at 1:20. He then launches straight into singing the verse without hesitating for a moment or missing a single beat.
I just love seeing video of these guys playing together. The on-stage communication is simply brilliant.
Miss you every day ! From Italy
Truckin up to Buffalo at Orchard Pk. was truly an amazing show
Favorite Dead lineup by FAR
1:20, jerry's thinking bob is goign to take the verse , gets confused when bob step back and is pleasantly surprise when brent takes it instead
So nice to Jerry happy smiling and dancing after Brent came in and sang a verse.
Love this happy rendition! 💟🎶🥰🎵🌹💜🔆☮️✌🏼I ❤️Gerry!
Great times !!
They way I respected🫡 my man for singing this!!!!
They were in PEAK FORM ON THIS ONE
The Fat Man was so proud of his protegee. Brent was ascending into such a large role and would have surely carried this band through and beyond. He could steal the show and did. Orchard Park was one of my favorite places to see the Boys for sheer volume of people alone. God I miss it so much. Peace & Love to all those heartsick like myself.
Brent's passing was the end. It's so clear now.
This is the jam for our time now more than ever!
I miss Brent. I mean, of COURSE I miss Jerry! But I miss Brent too. Such a warm spirit, killer keyboard chops, and utterly unique and irreplaceable voice. The best thing about late era Dead (in my opinion) is Brent’s voice. ❤
Nothin’ll get ya going like a Dead tune with the Bo Diddley rhythm man. Iko, MSWS, Not Fade Away never fail to get you up dancing in pure bliss!
Well said 🙌
Ain’t that the truth. Nobody stood still during an Iko! Love that tune!
Good morning you beautiful world!! ❤️🌏🌎🌍🐅🐺🐊
WOW Bobby is so young in this vid, and Jerry is moving around on stage... Brent is just having fun... pick away in heaven JG... good memories!
Oh my God it's Brent the best oh do I miss him I still remember his last show and that was almost 35 years ago
I've seen this so many times, and today was the first time I noticed (at around 1:21), Bobby looks at Brent, and Brent nods and points to his mic....that brings me yet more joy.
Amazing😊
Unforgettable show...start dancing every time I play the videos.....and the smiles....wow
I was Frying Hard in Auburn Hills, and half way through this song My Wife says, "it's the song from I Love Lucy. Great Times!!!¡!
Beautiful, my favorite grateful Dead song. Just like all the others.
What a great show. Jerry dancing. Brent belting out the vocals and raising his hands.
Harry Belefonte did this first. Ricky Ricardo did it with Lucy. On the Lucy show. Always been one of my favorites
2 musical legends on this stage gone too soon, there must be some great music up in heaven
Brent is amazing on this & Jerrys reaction is priceless 🎙🎹🎶
The 80’s Dead are still my fav years.. Miss ya Brent and Jerry. Thank you for the smiles
Un des meilleurs groupes de rock, jamais égalé.
Bobby and Jerry both loved Brent. It's so obvious. They smile whenever he starts singing.
Sure made all the girls and ladies smile and dance so happy.
A myth behind the story, - Lucy Ricardo from I love Lucy used to hear her husband Ricky Ricardo sing this song to her prior to the first interracial couple being publicized on national TV! And I recently wrote a new song called family tree where Adam says to Eve, eat that Apple baby if you please! So the women have been smarter than us man for a long time according to a reworking of an old story. Thanks Bobby and Dead for that insight, one of my favorite unrecorded on an album Grateful Dead songs! Thanks Sir David and Dead Family!
👆🎸🦋💎✌️😜🌼💕🤣⚡😻💯♾️
So sweet, brent sure could rip it. RIP ❤🙏❤
Man, this is a smoking track! I came across Harry Belafonte today! I remembered how I forgot about this song lol I remember seeing Jerry play this so several times! It was one of the regular songs they busted out
Saw them in Pittsburgh on that tour fukin awesome glad to see Jerry before he passed!! Rip my man Jerry @@
My father used to play this for me when I was a child 💕
Kevin, Mike and me trucking up to Buffalo....loved the show
Out of all Dead recordings, this is my absolute favourite. Superb.
Brent era will always be my favorite era. He brought so much soul to the band. Fuck drugs and depression
I appreciate the whole ride but Brent breathed a second wind to the group and it is indeed Impeccable. The energy is electric and on their faces. The band was having FUN and it's infectious!
Thanks for Posting MON ..Great stuff ..my 1st show was 1979 Rochester NY ..my last show was somewhere in the 90s ..was in another land....RIP Jerry, PIG PEN ! Brent ...we love ya
That's right! Now if we would stop hating on eachother... that would be great . peace & love
Great show
Wow! Seeing Jerry so happy and light on his feet @1:37 b/c the crowd loves the Brent vocals…..man it’s cool, I don’t know if I have ever seen Jerry so happy onstage like that……cool…..he found the fun
Showed this to my old lady, she's said, " well duhh"
Old lady....guess you don't get it ...
@@ljd1031 😅 Well duhhh
@@michaelosy462 ypure lucky she puts up with your crap...
35 short years ago! Miss you Jer!!!
One of my favorite Dead covers. Brent had a hell of a voice. Legitimate Soul and R&B vocal chops and really gave an added element to the band. RIP.
I was at this show!!!
Straight fiya! Brent and Jerbear ❤
Dare y’all to do live show from 66’ or 67’.
I Double dog dare ya !💪🏼💀⚡️
perfect and i love to hear brent.
been looking for this video everywhere, it was up a few months ago, but seemed to disappear from the face of the earth, (at least for me), happy days to find it again!
Brent and Jerry :50sec into it.
I loved it when they played this! Great memories!
Love me some smokin' hot 89. The boys look like they're having a blast!
Brent RIP
So good! Thank you!
My face is melting
Jerry loved playing with Brent you could tell he had a good time playing with brent
the dozen or so shows i caught
( 80 - 87 ) were all with this line up ( mydland ) and probably one of the best line-up'z in my dead opinion , peAce , davis
AWESOME
Rip brent ,jerr😢y also they both had a spirit and luv that was unpassable 🎉
Reminds me of all the Dead Heads back in Connecticut Prep School and Summers on the Vineyard-lots of Pichouly
On their game!!
Thanksss...!!! ;)
The MUSIC WILL NEVER STOP
Brett SHINES in this song!❤
Yeah that little jig Jerry did was very nice.
nothin left to do but smile smile smile..
89 was a period of brilliant light in a relatively dark Dead era IMO. I love Jerry & Brent here. All Smiles.
It looks like Bob was supposed to sing the Little Boy Sit On The Corner And Cry verse, as he usually did... Bob's looking at Brent as he's walking up to the mic... Brent points to Bob to go back as if he's saying... I got this. Jerry's watching Bob walk toward the mic... and then looks a little bewildered as Bob backs off... and then Brent knocks it out of the ballpark. It looked like it made Jerry's day.
Great reaction. Check out Man Smart, Woman Smarter from the same show.
Happy birthday Brent.. We love you!
Love Jerry with a pep in his step
Loved him 💔
Such great guitar playing !
Gotta love the Dead
