  • In this video, Dr Peter Coleman, who is Board-certified in Addiction Medicine and in long-term recovery himself, shares his thoughts on getting off of buprenorphine.
    -Safe, Comfortable Outpatient Detox
The Coleman Institute for Addiction Medicine has been a leading outpatient addiction treatment center since 1998. Our innovative withdrawal management programs, often referred to as The Coleman Method, have helped thousands of people free themselves from addiction to Alcohol, Opioids, and Benzodiazepines. Originally founded in Richmond, Virginia, our network has expanded to cover 14 cities across the US.
    -3 - 8 Day Opioid Detoxification Process
For short-acting opiates like oxycodone, most patients complete their detox and begin Naltrexone therapy within 5 days. Longer-acting opiates like Suboxone and Methadone typically take 8 days. Our standard opioid treatment package in Richmond, VA and Wellesley, MA includes the detox and 6 months of case management and Naltrexone therapy. As a non-addictive opioid blocker, Naltrexone dramatically reduces cravings so that patients can focus on their recovery. We have a 98% success rate for completing detoxification and starting Naltrexone therapy. During the detox, we work with patients and their families to develop an appropriate aftercare plan. We also offer a convenient, 3-day outpatient alcohol detox and a Rapid Benzodiazepine Detox.
    -Caring, Empathetic Environment
Dr. Peter Coleman understands first-hand the challenges our patients are facing due to his own personal struggle with the disease of addiction. He has been in long term recovery since 1984. Dr. Coleman has dedicated his career to treating addiction patients and creating a team and an environment conducive to long term recovery for his patients.

Keep it up fellas. I’m 5 weeks off and feel great now.. the sleep got better after 3-4 weeks in my case. Finally starting to feel “normal” can’t believe it took me so long to get off that shit but as many close cases I’ve had with opiates it was my last crutch and finally free from it as well. It served a purpose but I can’t see taking subs long term is beneficial.

People who's never been addicted think it's so easy to get clean. That all you have to do is quit. You'll only been sick a couple of days. But tell me... when you're sick do you not take medicine to help you get better? What if they're was a little pill that could take that sickness away in minutes? It'll make you feel well again.. would you not take it?
As long as you have the access to take your sickness away, it will make it nearly impossible to get clean. Now how do you do about getting clean when you have a family, a job, a home, bills? What if you can't take the time you need to get clean because if you do you lose everything? What does that person do? Suboxone isn't help. It isn't the way to go and it will forever be the biggest regret of countless lives always remembering the day they made the terrible decision to get "help" because that help wasn't help. It was a gimic pulled by big pharma and we fell for it at our biggest time of need. So many were grateful at first but when they realize it's 10 years later and they're still dependent and they try to quit but they can't because that pain is so intense and they're going to lose everything they've worked for... it's at that moment they learn the truth. They've been scammed. They fell for a lie. They were betrayed by those they came to in their time of need and all they saw was a dollar sign.
    Modern society makes me sick

I’ve moved on from the addiction piece & for that I’m grateful to have found suboxone.
I have a wife and kid (my kid is going to be 10 in November) and I’ve been plenty sober since before he was born. I get that it only takes one time and all that - but the desire has been completely lifted. Not sure what else to say about that.
As far as the Suboxone - there’s got to be a better way that just tapering. These docs know that! There really does.
If not, then I’ll go through whatever it is I have to go through. But I’m tired of every doc giving me the same old speech - saying “you gotta taper down,” with (really) little to no further support than that. It’s criminal & sad.
To anyone reading this - just know I’m praying for you. Keep your head up & do your best. When it’s your time - seize it. No one else will help or make you do it.
Or to put it a different way & in the immortal words of Mr. Winston Churchill:
      “Never, never,…never give up!”
      Good luck & Godspeed friends!

@@limayaden8458 my recommendation is if you're going to go on Suboxone long-term get to 2 mg, if you need to start at a higher dose make sure you get on that and then taper yourself down to 2 mg. Anybody can taper down to 2 mg easily. I noticed that all the bad side effects definitely subsided when you got down to 2 mg versus like 6 or 8 mg. 2 mg is worth equivalent to 40 mg of oxycodone to put it in perspective and 8 mg is 160 mg of oxycodone, also 8 mg is equivalent to 60 mg of methadone

I hear Suboxone and methadone are similar so im going to put my experience here. I was on methadone for 10 years and took my last dose on July 15. It was so scary not knowing what was ahead. I did have pretty intense acute withdrawal for a month or so, sneezing, runny nose, chills, body aches, stomach pain, diarrhea, and insomnia. After that first acute stage, those symptoms faded. I still have trouble sleeping and seem to have low energy levels but I have adjusted to less sleep without it stopping my everyday life. Now there are days i still feel some lingering symptoms, mood is down, anxious, but its not everyday. Seems to come in a cluster of a few days and then lift again. I knew i had to do this eventually and time was going to pass regardless. I decided to use the time and get clean. Please don't let it scare you to never getting off of that's what you really want to do. God's blessings.

I’m scared to get off and for my brain and body to go back normal and what that will look like.

I feel u 100% been 2 yrs for me and no benzos or opiates otherwise in about 2.5 yrs and im so ready and close to being off the subs but im kinda worried too like once its gone and im just “raw dogging reality” and dint have the accountability of the urine tests and my father finding out if i lose a carry and gotta go more often that I may relapse. I figure even if I do ive learned so much that I could never just fully dive in and fully endulge day after day just thinking ah ill worry about withdrawal and dependence some other day bc i feel too good. That mentality burned me way too many times for me to ever be ok w letting Myself do it again i feel. 🤷‍♂️

    • @ellen9925
      @ellen9925 8 месяцев назад

Don't be scared. Jumping off was the scariest part because I just didn't know how my body was going to respond. I was on methadone for 10 years and got off July 15. Sleep and low energy is the only thing that bothers me now 100+ days later. Times gonna go by regardless so I figured I might as well use that time to my advantage. The worst physical withdrawal was over in about a month. It lessens after that but the lingering issues with sleep and energy levels stay longer. I promise you though it's doable. My body has adjusted to less sleep and I still can do my daily activities.

Suboxone has disrupted my hunger signals, it has crushed my appetite and has taken away almost all desire for food. I am absolutely miserable I am trapped. I've been on Suboxone 7 years and I honestly don't think I'll make it to 8. This medication has legs. Any attempt to lower my dose has been for nothing. Hi The Rabbit and Lab Best Friends-Sorry to hear about your bumpy journey. There are options for detoxing that provide relative comfort for most people, but some people have a tougher time than others, based on usage history, age, other health conditions, genetics, etc. Ultra Rapid Detox using general anesthesia is one option, but it brings all the risks associated with anesthesia, can be extremely stressful on the body, and isn’t covered by most (any?) commercial insurers in the US, who tend to consider it experimental or not medically necessary. We have developed an outpatient detox
process that seems to thread the needle with a very high completion rate for detoxing while using sedation short of general anesthesia and a customized suite of comfort medications to address any symptoms that may arise. We’ve used this method with over 9,000 patients over the past 20 years with good results, and we are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, Optima, Tufts, and Beacon Health Options among others. If you want to learn more, please call us at 888-788-5474 or visit TheColemanInstitute.com. Best wishes to you!

I’m still on a high dosage and the doctors don’t want to taper down if you can believe it! Someone like me should not be on 3 a day for this long and that’s another problem but I made my mind up and it’s time.Wish me luck it’s going to be a long journey from here.

If doctors truly cared about saving people's lives that write Suboxone they wouldn't charge $150 or more per month cash only. Yes it does save peoples lifes that are bad off but there are doctors out there like mine that has left me on it for well over a decade. I added it up and I'll spent about $50,000 cash since I've started. Imagine what I could have done without money otherwise.

My main goal for getting off Suboxone is just to feel normal. I’ve heard from several people on long acting Naltrexone that it blocks any feel good endorphins - from working out or sexual excitement or motivation to do fun things. The whole point of me getting off Suboxone after being trapped for 8 years is to feel normal - so can someone explain how Naltrexone has helped them? I’ve heard from some that low dose Naltrexone helps by healing the receptors that have been changed by years of being plugged by Suboxone. Any thoughts on this? I have absolutely no desire to use ever again, especially opioids, I’m done with that. My main concern is just getting back to normal and feeling good again. I’ve felt horrible on this and Gabapentin for 8 years now, and I’m wondering if an SSRI would be a better option in the future compared to Vivitrol.
Obviously I want to wait and see if I can get by without something like that, but I’m willing to try it. Psychedelic therapy changed my entire attitude about drug use, now I just want to get back to a somewhat decent baseline of sobriety without any mind altering medications or drugs.

There’s enormous fear of the future in people with long-term sobriety on Suboxone. As we age, painful joints etc come along. How is chronic pain managed in the Suboxone / naltrexone community? NSAIDS often aren’t enough & S8’s will be blocked (I think?). Also, there’s the continual stigma associated with people on MAT that their pain isn’t real. I agree with staying on MAT but when the day for residential care comes along, will MAT continue? What happens in a palliative care situation - will morphine work? I guess people who’ve kicked the habit just want an uncomplicated future.

We’ve found that long-acting formulations of naltrexone-either Vivitrol or a naltrexone implant-are much more effective than oral because they remove a daily choice from the equation. You can find Vivitrol providers at Vivitrol.com. We have offices in 10 states that also offer naltrexone implants. You can find more info at www.TheColemanInstitute.com.

Hi David Champine--We have developed an 8-day outpatient detox specifically to help folks transition from buprenorphine or methadone over to long-acting formulations of naltrexone. We've helped hundreds of people through this process and made a lot of improvements along the way. We use small doses of naltrexone to speed up the withdrawal process without precipitating full withdrawal. We also customize a set of comfort medications to help manage any symptoms that do appear. When we've surveyed our patients, most of them report that their detox using the Coleman Method was easier and more comfortable that other approaches they have tried. Hope that helps!

  • @drek9k2
    @drek9k2 Месяц назад

The truth is simple and it is that if you would tell anyone ANY of the same things about Kratom you can say it for this and vice versa. You wouldn't say this about kratom? Well there you go then.
YES people need to get off it the real problem here is that the longer you're on it the deeper in the addiction you get. The problem with doctors is they want to draw this arbitrary distinction between drugs and medication. So far as they care this is a med--it isn't. It's a drug. It's a drug I once abused when I was 19 years old. You might as well tell people the same fucking thing about getting off of clonazepam, or getting off of cocaine, or getting off of Kratom or Marijuana. I'm trusting doctors less and less the more I see these videos on YT honestly, the fact is docs and drug companies make money off this and not dillies or Kratom. Yeah Diluadid can kill if you're being sufficiently reckless, I get that. And this isn't a miracle cure. I wouldn't prescribe bupe for anxiety or PTSD or alcoholism. You can easily read between the lines why this is not idea, the same way doing Kratom for 8 years is not ideal. Yet I've heard docs and health professionals attacking kratom and trying to treat it like an opiate, then drawing a line with methadone or suboxone. Personally I feel as though bupe is a really bad weapon of last resort for H and T addiction, or Oxy or hydromorphone or something sufficiently serious. Especialyl true when the alternative is literally risking fentalogue overdose. However. I'm sorry doc your literal exact same line of reasoning is literally applicable to taking Norcos. So what if a guy is stable, he should wait until he has a girl, a stable job, feels stable is in a good place to stop taking 40mg of hydrocodone a day? Really? No. And I'll tell you why any Pt. should be tapered asap, is because this is hard as shit to kick and you'll want to kill yourself being trapped on something extra that at least wanting to die from heroin withdrawal is over with eventually, the reason benzo WDs is so scary to me and why I don't want to fuck with that is it takes freaking months. It can take you one to four months to kick bupe, then have PAWS.
I wish more doctors would be from our own ranks frankly. Our lives are not a textbook. And it should be treated like what it truly is at the end of the day, an addicting and possibly dangerous drug that's near impossible to quit and comes with its own risks and drawbacks. I consider buprenorphine both more dangerous and more addicting than Kratom. IIRC both have SSRI activity which makes both complicated treatments, while I do appreciate the bind doctors are in for where you really can't even officially recommend shit like Ginkgo extract and are sort of forced by the system to recommend proscribed treatment courses (i.e. things that benefit the drug industry and impact the insurance companies as little as possible) the end state should always be the goal worked towards, which is to quit. ANYTHING that gets treated as lifetime maintenance is frankly bullshit to me. You should be learning to cope and getting cognitive and behavioural tools to deal better. I don't want to share mine here to make myself identifiable but I developed a battery of non-chemical solutions to things like anxiety and panic attacks and they work. You need a non-chemical toolkit and doing the inner work to take yourself from the hopelessness of being an addict to being drug free, and for many of us that is a battery of substances that needs being cleared out often one at a time (or sometimes a cluster if you can inpatient detox, probably after a long bender like hitting that meth pipe and doing dope and benzos and shots until you wind up forced to treatment). The goal should be as little drug as humanly possible. Otherwise you might as well throw in the towel and be saying that well, the founder of John Hopkins was a morphine addict and he spent his whole life a functional drug addict who only had problems when he tried to quit morphine so I guess being addicted to morphine longterm is ok. And that's the reason it isn't, it's the same with Valium or hell even coffee and Kratom, the longer which you are on something, the longer that shit takes to clear out including by your psychological habit and lack of behavioural toolbox. This is my problem with longterm BMT and it's what most addicts find out the hard way.
The only positive thing I have to say for multiyear medically enabled buprenorphine addiction is that while it's so lonely and isolating, the same thing making it not as horrific is what makes it harder, that damn half life. It'd probably be easier if you could chip at dire moments once a few days when it gets bad but let's not kid ourselves nobody is stopping there and it won't help anything. I almost feel like coming off bupe sporadic Kratom use may help but I have no clue the binding affinities and clearance is so long it may take two weeks before you can even consider it anyway at which point you're starting more to treat PAWS than the WDS. What I'm getting at here is you're less likely to notice and be as directly and brutally impacted in your buprenorphine addiction than heroin or smoking because like I knew I had to pack and plan ahead of time for layovers and shit to get that nicotine in on anything that took over three hours. T addiction is the same, only more brutal. H I imagine feels this way. But what spooks me I'm hearing reports of people feeling the comedown in 12 hours which doesn't makes sense, it's 36 hour/HL how is something with such a long half life hitting withdrawals in under a day?

And how to we know how much is really absorbed under the tongue?! The withdrawls are nothing compared to oxy’s! Way worse! Why is it the worse to come off when it’s suppose to be the best opioid to take for dépendance makes no f**** sense! I feel like shit most of the time I often get sick in the morning too! It should not stay and stick that long on the receptors!! They need to change the recipe!!

    • @jimmalmstrom6593

Totally Agree! My experience (MANY years) is that Dr's. prescribed far too large a dose - 4 mg/day covers 70-80% of the brain's receptors and they start people on 16mg and more! For the vast majority of the years I was on SUB I took 2mg/day. It IS possble to taper but you must get your mind straight first - you must make your decision; I'm gonna reclaim my life and I'm IN LOVE with the idea of being off SUB and all opiates. It must become almost all you think about, you are obsessed with the idea of being off. It's the last thing you think about every night (this is key - your brain will process these thoughts as you sleep, overcoming the negative "programs" that run your subconcious during waking hours). Happy to provide my step-by-step for jumping with no withdrawals. Again, I have done it four times.
