How do you use a silicone toilet brush?
A toilet brush is designed to clean inside of your toilet. And all along I’ve been using this old school kind. The problem is, they’re filthy, messy and unhygienic. So I want to switch to a silicone toilet brush - but is it better???
Start by putting on some cleaning gloves. I buy Brillo brand cleaning gloves. I got these from the Dollar Tree. I have several and don’t feel bad if I have to toss them after cleaning a really nasty toilet since it’s only $1.
Gloves protect your hands and sleeves from toilet bowl water splatter. Some people may even wear eye protection. Because no one wants toilet splashes in their eyes - gross! Ok I don’t wear goggles, but if you’re a serious clean freak you might.
Begin by applying toilet cleaner to the toilet bowl, and give it some time to sit. I use Lysol brand, which is a pretty strong chemical that you don’t want on your hands. The reason is I want to disinfect as well as clean the toilet and you can get it to stick to the inside of the rim.
If you want something that’s safer for your skin, kids and pets, we love the Force of Nature. It costs a bit more but it disinfects and is a lot safer than strong chemicals.
You can use homemade cleaners or even some vinegar in place of toilet cleaner, but they won’t kill germs.
While the cleaner sits, spray the exterior of the toilet with an all-purpose disinfectant, again, like Force of Nature.
Start with the exterior, and work from the top of your toilet to bottom. Why? Gravity. You want to prevent dripping on already clean surfaces. I use a microfiber cloth, after testing a bunch of them, I get Mr. Siga. If you’re on a budget the Dollar Tree has them for $1 or even 50 cents each, depending on the size.
If the toilet is extra dirty or you’ve got a lot of hair and stuff on it, you may want to wipe it down with paper towels and toss them in the trash. Be sure to get the top, tank, handle. Then the lid of the toilet. Finally, wipe down the entire outside of the bowl.
Once the exterior is clean, use a toilet brush to clean the bowl. A regular toilet brush has all of these plastic bristles that can get so gross and trap bacteria. Also it’s easier to get toilet splatter on yourself because the bristle sprays you.
Get the rim. You know the area underneath the rim where water pours out? Since this is out of sight, many people don’t scrub it. Don’t ignore this area! Use your brush to clean the underside of the rim. Also clean inside the hole at the bottom.
    When done, flush the toilet.
How do you clean a toilet brush?
You should rinse off your toilet brush after every use and clean it when it gets dirty, or every few months. These things get dirty!
The great thing about a silicone toilet brush is you can throw it into the dishwasher. And I looked for a silicone toilet brush that had a holder that is vented at the bottom so it doesn’t marinate in toilet water. A toilet brush caddy with proper ventilation allows the brush to dry completely between uses to avoid bacteria buildup.
Some even have holders that are clear and stick to the walls so you can store it out of site. They’re smaller anyway and so they won’t take up as much space.

    Two suggestions:
    1. Do not scrub with a lot of force when using a bristle brush. Let the tips of the bristles do the cleaning. If you push the bristles flat, you’re not getting the full benefit of the design. This also saves on brush wear. I’ve used the same brush for years and the bristles are still straight and unfrayed.
    2. Remove the toilet seat. Most seats are easily snapped on and off. With the seat removed, you can more thoroughly clean the flat surface underneath-including the mounting holes. The seat is also more thoroughly cleaned when detached. I just take it out back, squirt it with a garden hose, then let it air dry. If that’s not an option, then use a utility sink or even the bath tub.
My father was a full-time janitor, and I earned my spending money by helping him on his weekend jobs when I was in high school. It’s amazing how much I learned, including how to save time while still doing an efficient job.

Thank you I obviously didn’t know this about the bristle brush.
My toilet seats don’t come off and I didn’t check this one (not mine) since it was all about testing the brushes. My toilets are to clean to see any difference. So I found someone who let me clean theirs. Ha ha

I tried a silicone washing up sponge and it was useless because it was so soft with no abrasion. Everyone's raving about silicone toilet brushes but I just can't see that you'd be able to do any real scrubbing with them, it's basic physics. Bizarre that all the reviews recommend them.

I'm wondering if it helps to really let the bowl soak in the toilet bowl cleaner first, she left hers for I think she said 10 minutes? Might help break everything down so the silicone doesn't have to work as hard. I just like how much more sanitary it is so if I can find a way to clean well with it I will😂

this may not be as obvious....but once ur done using the brush...use the disinfecting spray to spray down the brush head...then use the toilet bowl rim cleaner to top it off by swirling it around the brush a few times....(my brush always stays clean that away.)..& use the disinfecting wipes to wipe dwn the head of the cleaning bleach gel...(once u use it around the toilet rim itself)....that way it dont stay grimy....then use a disinfecing wipe to wipe dwn the container of the disinfecting wipes itself...

I doubt that sparse silicone bristles would clean well. I used joseph joseph flat toilet brush with little silicone bristles but it didnt work well. I got eco friendly coconut bristle brush works really well. Just needs to drain and dry well, which it does if you leave the brush leaning in bowl after cleaning..

Can you use a steam cleaner under the rim? Will it damage anything?

    • @CleanFreakGermaphobe
      @CleanFreakGermaphobe  3 года назад +1

Shouldn't damage anything but I'm skeptical that it would work. If you used a brush attachment to scrub, maybe. But I'd worry about it being too abrasive.
After I was frusrrated that the rim didn't come clean, the homeowner told me the toilet was dirty for years. The person who owned it before didn't do much cleaning.

Hi Clean Freak, We use a Lubeka in the bathrooms instead of a toilet brush, they are expensive but I’m assured one will last a lifetime. These are more for everyday toilet spot-cleaning rather than scrubbing, but we also use it with a deposable washing up sponge when the toilet needs a proper scrub so now we’ve been able to throw away all our brushes.

hmm, just thinking about it for a bit, i do like the idea of a silicone brush for longetivity, but wouldnt it technically clean worse since it is so waterproof it cant really retain or slosh the cleaning water around well enough for the cleaning process? so essentially you would be almost trying to scrub with a "dry" brush?
im also thinking it would probably do awful against mineral stains from water, but im not someone who knowingly has hard water, so any rings i get in my toilet tend to be purely bacterial-- but thats also coming from the perspective of someone whos been using a normal plastic bristle brush for years, perhaps just never letting hard water stains build up to a visible amount, all without even knowing, due to the more abrasive nature of the plastic bristle brushes.
i'm just tired of toilet brushes turning orange with rust, and thats mostly why i'm thinking to try a silicone one. even if theres no visible metal, it seems like plastic bristles are always mounted with some sort of metal inserts which eventually rusts, especially if you soak your brushes to clean them. ive done some lazy tests soaking my brush in bleach or in acid solutions, and only the acid removed the stains, so i figure they were rust related and not bacterial.
