    My dad used to make ice cream floats. They were pretty good.
    A non-food idea when it's really hot and if you don't have A/C .... in an open window, place a fan (box fans work the best) and face it OUTWARDS. It will suck out the hot air inside to the outside, and help lower the temperature and even some of the humidity. We have had a broken A/C all through the summer so far and we've been doing this and with the exception of a couple of really really bad days, it has helped immensely. A dehumidifier also helps (lessening the humidity will help it feel cooler) .... also, a wet cloth/rag draped around your neck, wet it when it dries .... helps keep you a bit cooler (and a small fan keeping air moving will help this too).

    • @WebspoonWorld
      @WebspoonWorld  2 месяца назад +6

      That’s a great collection of tips for staying cool without A/C!

    • @rebeccasourpuss

      If you're alone (or brave) point the fan inwards, stand in front of it naked with a spray bottle full of water and spray the water towards the fan. It will blow cool mist all over your skin, which the fan will then quickly evaporate, cooling you off. I've actually gotten over-chilled doing this!

      During the depression people would use wet sheets hung in the doorways and big windows to cool the breeze and collect dust

    • @PulpParadise
      @PulpParadise 2 месяца назад +3

      Open all of your windows overnight / in the early morning to allow air flow. During the day, close any windows in the sun and leave the shaded windows open. Face fans outside to draw the heat out. Cover any windows in direct sunlight with white curtains or Reflectix insulation (cheap reflective car window covers also work) to reflect heat away as well. During the evening / early night, once it's cooler outside than inside, open all the windows again. Put fans facing inside to draw the cooler air in.
      Dehumidifiers are GREAT in humid areas but useless in arid climates. In arid / desert climates, you can use a swamp cooler, which is what all of those DIY Styrofoam coolers full of ice with a fan on them really are. This will add humidity to the area, so don't waste your time with this method in high humidity areas.
      Cooling towels are available in sporting goods sections of Walmart or on Amazon. They are designed to be cooler than a regular piece of cloth and retain the coolness until they dry. Read the instructions and be sure to activate them or they won't be any better than a normal piece of cloth. Once they're dry, repeat the process. These help tremendously. If you can't afford to buy them, you can do something similar with a bandana or other lightweight piece of cotton cloth, but it won't work nearly as well. (They also clearance out the cooling towels at the end of summer at Walmart.)
      In summer, you can cool yourself quickly by taking a swim, but if that's not an option, run cold water on your wrists and forearms, your head, neck, feet, and ankles. In a heat emergency (heat stroke, etc.) place reusable ice packs wrapped in a towel in the armpits and groin of the person. All of these areas are where veins are close to the surface. Note that the same areas will go a long way toward keeping you warm in the winter if they are protected from cold as well. By changing the temperature of the blood as it flows past, the body circulates the cooler (or warmer) blood to the rest of the body and the end result is a fast relief to the body's ability to handle the extreme temperatures. When it's not possible to cool all of those areas, running cold water just on your forearms and wrists will also work wonders.

      I’m from Australia too FNQLD for knuckle disease and wrinkles and soooo many things you need Organic Cold press Castor Oil without Hexane, rub it into your knuckles a couple of times a day, especially before you go to sleep, if it’s really bad I would put a lot on and wear those rubber gloves on this video overnight for a few nights, not only will your pain & swelling go, your hands will look 10 years younger in days.
      I had a ganglion on my thumb knuckle, within a week it was gone. Look up a video on castor oil, it’s amazing for so many health ailments, it used to be called Christs Palm, I can see why it’s literally God’s gift, I use it on my face, all my wrinkles lines around my eyes & lip from smoking have all popped out, just a faint line where there was a deep wrinkle and this happens in days. I put a few drops of peppermint essential oil in my face castor oil, peppermint heals cracked heels that’s what they put in those heel balms, so I figured it would help my face lines and it does, I put it on 2 - 3 times a day to start with, because I noticed how fast it was working, the castor oil penetrates the deeper layers under the skin and re-activates the collagen that stops working as we get older. My face is easy 10-15 years younger than it was before i started using castor oil 4 months ago.
      And for whiten teeth at night swish a tablespoon of organic coconut oil around your teeth sucking and pulling for 5 - 10 mins, as long as you can handle it, your teeth will feel the cleanest you’ve ever felt them, it’s amazing and within a couple of times your teeth are already becoming whiter.

I don't recommend doing this unless you're going to chop or slice onions right away & cook them in the same day otherwise they get a limp & soggy !! If I want to slice my bacon in cubes, I stick bacon in freezer for 15 minutes and then slice bacon into cubes. This makes it easier to control the bacon while slicing.

    That onion soaking trick works but anytime a food is soaked or rinsed in water some flavor is lost, depending on the length of time. Bell peppers: I cut the top and bottom then make a vertical cut. Slowly pull the pepper from the membrane, like you're unrolling it. There should be minimal seed flying, the seed core virtually intact, and one long piece of pepper. Cut the remaining white part away and then slice or dice to your heart's content.

      I enjoy the challenge of peeling them then re-grow the bottom you cut off on a wet cotton ball in a dish cover with gladwrap to keep the moisture in until they shoot

    I do the glove hack a lot. Yes it is so much easier to put those nitrile gloves on with the thin plastic food handler gloves underneath. I will have to try the add water to my eggs hack soon. Thanks for these tips. I will also keep the frozen water bottle into the fridge to keep food cool if needed. I use the wet paper towel on the cutting board when I slice onions, it really works!

    We freeze big margarine containers or ice cream tubs/pails. Started doing it in the 70s and can also use them 8n a cooler for camping. A small frozen margaring container is great in front of a table fan to cool off.

    I've been adding water to the frying pan for some years now, instead of trying to flip fried eggs. And some years ago I picked up the trick (don't recall from where) of chilling wine, beer, or soda in the freezer with a wet paper towel. I swear by both of these and use them every week. Note: set a timer to remind yourself to take the bottle out of the freezer after 15 minutes - if you forget and leave it in too long it can burst as the contents freeze and expand. This is especially a disaster for wine - glass fragments in the freezer....
