Path of the Midnight Sun is one of my favorite indie RPGs and it's a shame that more people haven't even heard of it. Everything about that game is well-executed and it has very charming and memorable characters as well as an interesting story and satisfying combat. Crpytmaster looks awesome from what I saw of it it in the stream and I'll have to get that one soon.

I played Flat Heroes on Xbox and it's an awesome game, a lot of fun. I got several more people on Xbox to try it and most that gave it a try got hooked. Xbox still has a demo of it to try and I see Steam also still has a demo of it.

The two games from this year that I feel are most overlooked are DEATH TRICK:DOUBLE BLIND and DREAM TACTICS.
DEATH TRICK is a really charming detective visual novel (think Ace Attorney without the court cases), with genuinely great art and writing, and none of the weirdness that might turn someone off from the genre.
And DREAM TACTICS is tactical RPG/deckbuilder hybrid that is approachable but has lots of room for creative synergies. Also the OST is a bop!
As for the video, I thought it was a really interesting selection of games, and I’ll be adding UNSPOTTABLE and CAN OF WORMHOLES to my wishlist

I actually COMPLETELY agree with you - which is why I covered that one in our "10 Best Steam Games That Won't Cost You a Penny!" video last month! I try not to repeat games in lists too often, since the more variety we can show to you folks, the more you're in the know - but yeah The Thief, The Witch, The Toad, and the Mushroom had absolutely no business being free. Such a beautifully ominous game. Thank you for watching!!

    You asked for it... :P
All Our Asias - I will ardently shill for any of Analgesic's games, because if I were forced to pick an all-time favorite game, it'd probably be Anodyne 2, but this and Even the Ocean are two that I almost never hear anyone talking about, and it is excellent. It's mostly about exploration, but the worlds it creates are nothing short of breathtaking, and it's cheap as free at itch.
Creepy Castle - I'll never pass up an opportunity to shill for this one, either. Don't let the generic title (to clarify, it's the one made by Dopterra) fool you: there's a pretty incredible depth to this one. The music is excellent, the visuals are dark and colorful (think Commodore 64), and the gameplay is almost like a Mystery Dungeon game turned on its side for a little verticality and without RPG elements. That on its own would get high marks for me, but the story really sneaks up on you; by the end of the first scenario, I was in absolute shock. Shame this one never really took off.
Fox n Forests - If you like SNES-era Platformers, this one has you covered. It was also going to be on the Intellivision Amico as Finnegan Fox or something, but we all know how that turned out...
Haven - This RPG is a bit light on the RPG stuff, but you have a beautiful world to explore and one of the best-written couples I've ever seen in a game. The best part? You can be gay! At least, it is for me; as a queer woman, I'm drawn to well-written queer couples, but sometimes it seems like all my people make is Visual Novels, and I'm not really into that. You can play as a straight couple, two men, or two women, and the alternate sexualities aren't half-assed, either; I really wanted to play this even before you had same-sex options, and that makes it just that much better.
Islands: Non-Places - A surreal, colorful game with interactive dioramas, I guess you'd say, and I've never had anything come closer to showing how my own mind works.
Luxuria Superbia - Another surreal, colorful game that's a little like Child of Eden (another underappreciated game that's the spiritual successor to Rez) that has one extra little element I don't have the heart to spoil, but you'll probably figure it out pretty quickly. If you can, try to play this on a mobile platform (anything with a touchscreen), but a mouse works just fine.
Onde - This to me is what I think Gris was to a lot of people; it's beautiful, fairly abstract, and tells its story without any written or spoken words. What sets it apart from Gris, though, is that the story is just so... cosmic. The gameplay is a bit unusual, so that takes a little time to get used to, but I didn't find it too obtuse or frustrating.
Princess Remedy - This has the same kind of aesthetic as Creepy Castle above, but you go inside of the realm's ailing residents and blast away their problems. It's fun, engaging, on the short side, and I think the first of the two games is free.
Smelter - Remember when ActRaiser Renaissance phantom dropped, everyone rushed out to buy it, and was immediately disappointed? Well, THIS is the ActRaiser follow-up you've been looking for! The sidescrolling sections give you three different modes with their own movesets, and the overhead sections are more like a Twin-Stick Shooter but feel like the logical evolution of what ActRaiser might've been. Soundtrack goes pretty hard, too! It is very challenging, but if you don't mind your games having a little bite to them, I recommend giving this a shot.
Unparallel - This is very short, but free at itch. I can't remember what I've played that has these, but it's made up of those puzzles where you see yourself in a mirror, but only the reflection shows reality, so you have to train your brain to watch that while controlling your real self. The music and atmosphere are outstanding; excellent for late autumn/early winter sunsets.
Weird and Unfortunate Things are Happening - Don't let the fact that it's an RPG Maker game inspired by Earthbound scare you off; this has excellent characters, great music, a cool elemental system, and a great deal of cosmic horror thrown in just for fun. Yes, many of these are inspired by Earthbound, but this understands what made Earthbound weird and special; it's not just, "DUH HUH HUH BUTT JOKES!"
Yume Nikki 3D - There's no shortage of Yume Nikki fangames out there, but of the ones I've played, this does an excellent job of capturing what made the original so special; I know that, "Yume Nikki isn't a horror game," is quite a hill to die on, and it's one I've obstinately chosen, but this focuses more on the strange beauty found within. It's perfect for a mid-spring cloudy/rainy day. Unfortunately, the expansion that comes with it doesn't so much drop that ball as toss it into an active volcano, but it's a standalone thing.

I LOVE how committed you were to answering this! I've actually tried Onde (didn't finish yet - curse my inability to focus on one game at a time) and agree it has such a strong sense of strange cosmic beauty. Thank you for watching!

Yeah actually, I played a bit of it on the Steam Deck and it ran pretty great. I vaguely recall that I may have struggled to get a locked 60 fps and recall it being more 40s-50s, but this was also around launch so it's possible they improved performance some since. Thank you for watching!
