    As others have pointed out earlier, there’s a fundamental error in these instructions that leave the legs too short.
    After folding the hem up to find the new length, you need to measure this total length (turned up from new bottom edge to the old hem edge including the hem). You then halve this value, and reposition the old hem so that the turnup excluding the hem is set at this amount.
    Note that the original measurement includes the hem depth but the hem is excluded when setting the new turnup for sewing.

      My thought exactly as I viewed this. I'm not sure how all those who followed these instructions didn't gripe that they were too short.

    That's awesome! I totally needed to see this. As a shorter, stubbier guy at 5'5, I always have trouble finding pants and jeans at that perfect 28.5" inseam length. The short/regular length is always 30" (sometimes 29"). All the pants I buy are long af and go past my heel to the floor.

    • @stanlanman9519
      @stanlanman9519 5 лет назад +1

      A Dream
      I too find it amazing that a 30” waist comes with a 30” inseam and to get a shorter 29” inseam you have to have a 34”!waist. Those of us 5’5” have to get fatter to get shorter inseams.

    • @TranquilAssassin
      @TranquilAssassin 3 года назад

      I am in the same boat. I'm pretty thin and am also 5'5 and they just don't make pants with my measurements. I take a 30" waist and about a 27 length but they just DO NOT have 27s at most regular places. Learning to hem has been a lifesaver

    If you shorten your jeans 1 1/2" than they will be shortened 3". You have to divide the number you want shortened in half and then turn up the hem!

  • @carolynnecp
    @carolynnecp 5 лет назад +18

    What I don't get is, if the folded up bottom edge is the length you want then you sew the original bottom 1.5 Inches up, won't it now be too short (As if you are sewing it 3 inches higher overall shorter now?)

    • @dawnpatterson9257
      @dawnpatterson9257 5 лет назад +3

      I'm confused on that too. This is the second video I've watched on this method, and I still can't figure out how it works by hemming it in half. I realize my original jean hem is 3/4 of a inch, but not 1.5 inches.

    • @carolynnecp
      @carolynnecp 5 лет назад +5

      @@dawnpatterson9257 I would iron along the hemline that you want as a guide, (in the video its 1.5 inches up). Then re fold the old hem edge so that it sits along this ironed line (this would then leave a folded waste part of HALF the original fold (in this instance 3/4 of an inch). This is because its doubled up so that overall shortening will be 1.5 inches Instead of the 3 inches she wrongly uses. Then sew along your original hem piece you want to keep. This will then be the correct length.
      Whatever your folded up piece measures, sew half way to this measurement as the explanation is wrong in the video.

    If you wanted to cut one and a half inches off, with this method, You were cutting 3 inches off. Furthermore, when done and the edge is folded down, the jean will be half inch longer than you measured because of the folding edge.

  • @fernank017
    @fernank017 4 года назад

    honestly, on those specific pants, the hem looks easy to recreate.
    1. mark the spot where you want your pant's to fall, I suggest using chalk. Pinning is okay, but it's annoying to deal with on a sewing machine.
    2. measure from the bottom of the pants to the stitching of the original hem
    3. mark the spot below the desired hem line (from step 1) that is 1.5 to 2 times the distance of step 2. If the distance is longer than the pants, you will need to get a seam ripper and rip open the original hem, unravel it, press it flat, and then mark it
    4. cut along the line of step 3.
    5. fold up the pants hem to half way between the line marked at step 1 (or all the way up to the line marked in step 1 if you went as far as 2x) and press w/iron. Make sure it's pressed well!
    6. Fold up the hem onto itself to the line you marked at step 1 and press like your life depends on it. This should hide the frayed/exposed portion of the denim. This should be 3 layers of denim, which can give issues to sowing machines trouble if they don't have a denim/jean needle.
    7. Sew as close to the top of the hem as you can - it'll prevent the hem from snagging when you put your pants on. You'll want to use the same color thread as your pants original hem. Go slow, go in a straight line. Don't forget to backstitch when you start, and when you finish. Before you start sowing, make sure you line up the hem's inseam/outseam with the pant's inseam/outseam. It's a small detail, but it's noticeable if you like to cuff your pants (if you're into that)

    • @lanvobep53
      @lanvobep53 5 лет назад +5

      I know. I was confused. After you figure out the length to cut, you have to fold halfway from the original fold then sew it. Otherwise you will lose the additional 1 1/2 in.

    • @jahvaults6500
      @jahvaults6500 4 года назад +2

      I done this but you need to divide the difference in half. IE mine were 4" too long so I only folded them 2" to get the desired length. Be careful and make sure you use a Jean needle #16 . Don't forget when you go over the side seams they are folded twice and that alot off denim to go through. Personally I don't like this way as the side seams look too thick afterwards. RUclipsrs always make it look easy but trust me if the jeans are your favourite or expensive , take them to a tailor. Most house hold sewing machines just won't go through the folded denim on the side's!!

      The way I do it is just measure from the groin to right below the original hem while it's folded. This is the point where you will sew it. Then account for around half an inch which is how big my original hem is. So if I'm doing a 27 length I measure about 26 and a half. This way when you flip the original hem down on the leg you get about the right length. But I never understood cutting the length in half because that's just an arbitrary amount depending on what length you're making. I like measuring the whole leg so I'm sure
