The NBA issue is cultural. There's no way an NBA coach could say these kind of things to his players. He's also right when he says the NBA doesn't give coaches the freedom they have in Europe. In the Euroleague a coach could decide to have LeBron come off the bench as a 6th man in a specific game, if he thinks it could help them win. That would never work in the NBA. @@j-tundifanclub6565 after LBJ sprained his ankle against the pelicans, the Lakers were trying to make the POs with AD back. I'm sure LBJ could have helped them in limited minutes off the bench. But he would never accept that, also because he has an extremely long streak of games scoring at least 10 points and that would be in significant danger.
The only coach that coaches a little bit with the euro style is Popovic. As all players have said, he is not far away from Zeljko calling his players out..
hard agreed, as soon as Mr. Obradovic would deploy some good old Yugo basketball school wisdom on their asses, they'll go "but muh mental health mimimimi" and demand to be traded.
I agree with everything, but racism. I have not seen racism from any European coach until now, correct me if I am wrong. For example, in Serbian teams many foreigners, both black (mostly American) and white are really loved if they play good and show interest for Serbian culture. The best example is Charles Jenkins who is arguably our favorite foreigner and he has had Serbian passport for a couple of years now. Same goes for some other players.
I grew up in Athens and I was a Panathinaikos fan. I was fortunate to follow the club back in the golden days of Obradovic. I do not think that I will ever experience again the emotions that his team gave me back then. What an era. I remember discussing with my friends that the club should built a statue to Obradovic. That' how much we admired him. Best regards from Albania.

He once sent Bjelica (who was Euroleague MVP that season) to the locker room in the 4th quarter of a close game for disobedience. And they eventually won by a single point. Imagine the Bucks sending Giannis or the Nuggets sending Jokic for an early shower in the 4th quarter of a close game. Unthinkable, right? See, this is why Obradovic would never coach in the NBA. There, players have much more power than coaches. Obradovic needs to be in full control of his players to be successful and there he wouldn't last even half a season with all those players with huge egos. But I'm thankful for that, cause he brought so much success to Athens and Greek basketball.
But it is strange in NBA they are more concern about personal stats, better personal stats - better contract, team is not most important. It is different in Europe.
@@zbtb4l bro, nba and eurobasketball are two different pare of shoes, bjelica was a beast in europe and the best player in the league in his best season, so yes the comparison is fitting, you should not talking about basketball besides nba ever again
People from Serbia, Greece, Turkey will understand this. Željko is a old type man. He is like old type father to those players. He is leading them, teaching them, love them, and cursing them when they don't behave well... And the most important, he is giving his heart and soul in that. Here, on Balkan, we still appreciate those types of father figures, but "modern" culture and society of the US, would label it like "primitive", "aggressive", etc... We will see who will win and the end
With all the best players I would take Euroleague 9 times, now he has 5 black players in Prtizan and cant win vs Red Star, Davidovac and Branko Lazic are fucking him.

I can't picture Obradovic during an NBA game timeout. 😂 "Lebron what you do ha? What you xxxx do! All xxxx your lives!! Every xxx one of you!! Yes?? Yes??"
I frequently listen to American podcast hosts and interviewers asking people why non-American NBA stars like Luka, Giannis, Pau or Manu are "lower maintenance". Still wondering? Imagine playing for coaches like Zeljko, or Messina, or Laso and trying to act all James Harden on them...You.Are.Done.
It is really simple, if you are earning 200 mil. you have bigger leverage. I guess european football stars will not be "lower maintenance" compared to NBA stars.
Ζeliko , is the best coach in history of the sport. Not only by the success, not only by the systems that he present, but mostly because of his personality. He is a true man. Thank you for everything coach Zelimir Obradovic, you are awesome.
If Zeljko not existed the european basketball ball would be two levels down. Decades of top players and coaches would be in medium level without his magic.
Zeljko represents the purest form of the sport, NBA on the other hand is a fusion of sport and show inside and outside the court. I cant imagine Zeljko being a part of that show and just shut up for the shake of someones glow (and the money that brings in the club because the franchise in the USA is on a different level). I enjoy watching both although NBA game times are harsh in Greece!
Thank you for these moments coach, what we lived these years in OAKA will remain as the best sporting memory we could ever dream of ! Always one of us.. Se efxaristo poli!
„Whether you win or lose, you have to work the next morning“. He is clearly a mastermind of this game. The world is not going to stop only because you feel bad. You have to live without giving up. Always pushing forward…
Honestly he is not for the NBA. All those superstars, and their ego would not be able to tolerate Zeljko Obradovic. He has fiery temper, loves team basketball and puts the team over anything else. As much as I love to see him in the NBA, he would take NBA by storm, but NBA is catering and spoiling its superstars, he will not fit with that egoistic, superstar "me first" culture.
Gregg Popovich is 100% against this idea also . While he doesn’t have the same level of star power as Phil Jackson, he’s 100% appreciated in today’s NBA
@@problemsnearyou3863 Have you seen Popovich cursing at his players? Because Obradovich will do that if he sees his players not caring and playing to the level they are supposed to, just to wake them up. He might be misunderstood there. As a Laker fan I would love to see Obradovich being their coach and saying f bombs to Lebron, Davis and Westbrook, just to show them they have to play better.
@@nikolaininkov I’m not sure if Pop is aggressively verbal with his team or not . I do know his way of motivating his team is by being a sarcastic asshole . So he would say shit like “are you going to get a rebound today or what” . Would be cool to get a coach that’s willing to inspire the way he does . It’s different & could be something that works for certain players
We shall be very happy to live in his era.. Im sure european basketball will see other great coaches in the future, new rivalries etc, but Obradovic seems unrepeatable. His temper, his character, intelligence as a person and overall presence are purely incredible. I really hope he finishes his career by winning Euroleague title with Partizan. This would be the fate he deserves for his hard work.
Panathinaikos's Green Era from 1999 up to 2012 under the guidance of the G.O.A.T. of European basketball coaches, Zeljko Obradovic is undoubtfully the most succesful running period of any European team in history. Legend! ☘️💚🏀🇷🇸
I mean, you look at someone like Doc Rivers who by all accounts has been mediocre and still has held multiple jobs. Obradović would easily be one of the best coaches in the league - if not the best - in terms of knowledge of the game. It's just that the way the NBA game and league rules are, it would be a tough business for any GM to put together a team that could play under him. And obviously most star players simply aren't used to taking shit from their coaches like that when they're coasting. Can you imagine someone like Harden playing under him? He'd ask for a trade immediately. Giannis and maybe Dončić would be the only ones who could cope because they would have an idea of who they're dealing with. Giannis I'd say for sure would be able to do it because he's a lot like Diamantidis whom Obradović loved: a true team player and professional, with an unparalleled work ethic.
I think any Europen player in the US could hadle plyaing under Zeljko, since most of the Europen coaches are explosive and loud, even in the junior categories
Go watch some celtics games from 2007 to 2013 he was an elite coach the won a championship in 07 it's just these days with social media and granted some unacceptable losses people have created the narrative that he's not a great coach when in reality he's one of the best ever in any league at any level
This LEGEND managed to make people frome Greece, Turkey and Serbia, and maybe whole Europe agree on one thing. HE is the BEST. He managed something noone ever will repeat. He created something out of nothing for so many times now. He's living legend. AND YET, there are some so-called "Serbs" , supporters of other basketball teams, that will insult this legend and his legacy each time they have a chance, while their biggest succes is nowhere near his. A true living legend, welcome back to Partizan!
Zots might never worked in the NBA but he is there. All the work, devotion, BB thinking brilliance, team playing, keeping a low profile outside the court, respect for teammates and opponents which you can see in certain players, it is there mainly because of him (and a couple of other European coatches). Don't forget Giannis grew up and played BB as a kid in 2000 - 2010 Athens. When it came to BB everything was about Zots's PAO, especially in Giannis's neighborhood. He was a God for all coatches Giannis ever had in Athens and they were trying to learn from/being like him. Also keep in mind Jokic is Serbian and Doncic from Slovenia, both former Jugoslavia in which Zots is considered a BB legent/professor. So, with the 3 of them leading the ALL NBA 1st team maybe people in NBA should start reconsidering. Maybe not about Zots, it is probably too late. But about coatches with a similar Yugoslavian/Eastern European/Greek mentality and mindset. Yugoslavian school of BB is legentary and Zots is the GOAT. Although as PAO's coach served my team (AEK Athens) many bitter moments :-)...
I always like to go back and watch some of this channel's classics, like this one. Pure Gold! You can not only see, but almost feel a pure genius of Zeljko Obradovic. THE G.O.A.T. Coach in Europe, and it's not even close...His PAO Years (13!) were the most impressive ones, in my opinion. That's when he wrote some pages in a "History of Basketball" Book, of his own...I also appreciate his influence on a modern Serbian, and European Basketball in general. And I, as a Serbian, am so proud of Zeljko. That's why Serbia and Lithuania are the ONLY TWO AUTHENTIC BASKETBALL POWERHOUSES IN EUROPE! We feel Basketball, we love Basketball and we live Basketball! Respect!
I would agree that in the NBA coaches don't seem to coach, they seem to manage players. As a coach myself, I agree you have to be able to coach your team, not be part of a management group!
14:30 - if you haven' watched this press conference yet, I advise you to do so. It has english subtitles and it's the best media conference in sport you'll ever see
Coach Obradovic would go bankrupt in the NBA due to fines for "excessive language" or would land in psychiatric hospital dealing with all those divas in the NBA. Just imagine if he had to coach 2021/22 Lakers. The things he would say to media about Bron, Russ or AD I hardly dare to imagine. The NBA media would rip him apart.
Europe in general has a lot of great managers, Obradovic being the best of them all. It would be interesting to have a look at some of them, both active and retired
Proud to be Čačanin 💪🏻🐐 even tho I am a fan of Crvena Zvezda I support Željko Obradovic more than anything. My grandfather worked together with his father. Željko Obradović is GOAT of European basketball hats off this man doesn’t need NBA because he done everything already 👏🏻

I myself being a Panathinaikos fun feel incredibly lucky that i lived the Obradovic era! Although we are trying to make a comeback and eventually we will win titles again, i am sure that will be no era like that ever again. Having watched the video the only emotion that comes close to describe what we Panathinaikos funs feel, is the bittersweet taste you get when you remember the biggest love of your life with whom you eventually broke up. Of course you will move on, have new experiences, live new things but a part of you will always be there. Zeljko Obradovic the greatest of all!
I'm a Red Star Belgrade (Partizan's arch rival) fan my whole life, and I can say without any doubt Željko Obradović is the best European basketball coach of all time. There is no question about it.
He is one and only!!! I remember when we played with Real,he was couch there back then, all stadium was applaud to him!!! We were Partizan,of course, his home team!!! That much everyone respected him, then Even when he plays against us you must to show him love and respect, cause we all know that he's our man, Partizan child!!! And once again today he's one of us,Partizan in heart always!!!
Željko Obradovic is an absolute legend, he represents everything that Serbia is all about in the beautiful game of basketball. Immense Pride, unmeasurable confidence and a genius mind for the game of basketball. NBA is a player and therefore marketing driven league, it is the competition packaged in the entertainment product. So if people in the USA think of Greg Popovic as a controversal and unortodox yet one of the best coaches ever in the NBA, I could see Željko Obradovic doing the same and potentially even greater achievements, because he is Greg on steroids in terms of the respect he has to have from his players, and the methods with which he achieves it. It is just the on/off the court drama that would come with his methods, and the question if the league was willing to give a chance to someone who would for sure be presented as a villain.
From Olympiacos fan, legend,NBA,i am sorry guys really he doesn't need to go in NBA,he is amazing but amazing coach, there is no another coach like him(especially in NBA ,aa just a little Greg Popovic),DUDA and Zeljko LEGENDS,no words
He is the best coach ever who didn't get an offer to work in NBA. Because NBA can't afford a legend like him.If he would have coached in NBA,today we would speak for the greatest dinasty of NBA. He would dethroned every coach and every dinasty. We would not talk about Michael Jordan because he would became a normal player. That's the truth, but NBA is trying everything to keep the primadonna of 🏀.Those NBA matches which finish with high point scores, with European coaches it would finish with mid scores
If we would explain why he didn't move to NBA with one sentence, that would be "NBA isn't too much for him, he is too much for the NBA". In the NBA, Gregg Popovich and Quinn Snyder are considered angry and they would look like as innocent as babies next to Zeljko.
Five Final Fours in a row and three finals in a row with Fener (which he did nowhere else) might've been worth to mention to, instead of downplaying it as just one EL title.
Yes,Fener was for five years top team in europe (350 million people)! Pitty you won just one of those three finals but you did win one - very few teams can say that. You are legends now. In my place our handball team were european champions in '73 and still are LEGENDS.
In the NBA the game is based on anarchy and personal performance. There is no team spirit . Coaches have little to do with the game. The NBA wouldn’t accept a coach who would monopolise the league and win all the championships with his flawless coaching abilities. Because when it comes to a game of tactics who would do better than European coaches ? Imagine with the best of them Obradovic And of course English language is not a problem as many would say…

Željko is one and only and there is no doubt about that. Either way, his accent brought me to tears every time :))) along with a huge amount of respect for the fact that he even didn't bother to fix it, or didn't give a s*it :)
He would never accept the "reality show" part of NBA + organizing the whole team around one player and his ego which is against his philosophy of basketball... so he was smart to never go there. European basketball and NBA are a lot different. It's easy to compare individuals and say that NBA has higher quality, but that's just one aspect. For me personally, European basketball is far above NBA in so many other aspects. One of them is beauty of a tram sport, atmosphere on games, teams' tactics etc. I can understand someone who is saying the opposite, but that's the difference between two kinds of basketball. Zeljko je part of the one I admire.

''you play for Panathinaikos , can you imagine ?''
To be fair Dončič played under Laso so he can handle him. Laso is "nuts" as well :D
I think any Europen player in the US could hadle plyaing under Zeljko, since most of the Europen coaches are explosive and loud, even in the junior categories
Obradovic is godfather of one of ituidis kids if i am right. He was obradovic second man for 7-8 years.
His impact on game is insane
