      Barracudas used to be M4 Class in X2 and it seems they just moved it to M5 without upping the speed and just nerfing combat capabilities

    The best allround ship is still the Moreya: 4 weapons, good speed, strong hull and big universal cargo bays.
    If you want a tank, look no further than the Kalis, around 6000 MW shields depending on the manufacturer, it can equip Terran weapons and it's not the slowest ship.

    A tip when flying boron low acc ships. Boost all you can before engaging travel mode. Therefor you skip half the acceleration which is very important in these low acc ships. So AI driven, they are a bit slow, player driven, they are pretty quick from A to B if you can do this trick.

      Omg yes, it's just guns with an engine, those things just keep shooting non stop. Also love the cockpit design.

      egosoft still does occasional updates for X3 and less often X2 and thats partially to keep them playable, especially since some of the team like to go back to the older games occasionally, for instance the voice of Boso Ta like to revisit the older games a lot

    For me, the search for the best S ship ended with the Chimera, hull 6.100, shield 1.200, speed 503 m/s, 5 weapon slots that can be filled with all kind of nasty things. Sure, those mk4 engines will eat engines parts like there's no tomorrow, but whatever role I asign them, interceptor or bomber, I know that the casualty list will be really low. 🤓

    I feel like the Boron fighters have to get an extra mention of their weaponry, specifically the Ion Gatling which makes their low top speeds almost a non-issue The Ion Gatling is able to massively slow down any fighter that gets hit by a burst from those. Your 550 m/s Chimera will slow down to as little as 35 m/s. The Ion Gatling is a big force equalizer for the the Boron fighters and makes them extremely deadly in a dogfight.
    If they catch you, you can't run away.
    As a side note, the acceleration you see in the ship statistic has nothing to do with the travel drive acceleration. Travel speed has a completely different acceleration value which you can see in the engines encyclopedia entry. Something like "time to travel top speed" in seconds.

      Yeah, but he is probably not alone to fall into that trap. Honestly, devs are LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG overdue of showcasing all of the stats of equipment, like there are equipment modifications that e.g. Influence "Travel Mode Attack Time" and as someone who plays this game the first time you won't have the slightest clue, what that actually means (afaik how fast a ship needs to charge up the travle mode) and you can't see anyhwere, how much "Travel Mode Attack Time" this or that engine has.
      So if you got no clue and compare e.g. TER Engines to ARG Engines, you might think, that TER Engines are shit, since they got a fairly lower travel mode max speed. So much for the Terrans being advanced in Tech compared to the Commonwealth of Planets, right? Right?
      What the game doesn't tell you is that the ARG Combat Engines first need time to charge their travel mode and then they need fairly long in travel mode to actually reach that top speed.
      The TER Combat Engine on the other hand instantly switches to Travel Mode, no Charge up time, and accelerates extremely quickly up to travel speed.
      So despite what the game seems to suggest, with TER Combat Engines you travel in many cases quicker across a sector than with ARG Combat Engines, total opposite what one might think.
      And imho that is something, that desperately needs to be fixed, devs need to make all the stats and characteristics of equipment available in the encyclopedia, upgrade windows, comparison window etc.
      Players shouldn't have to rely on installing 3rd party mods to see that stuff ingame.

    It's funny, for my money having a fighter slow in cruise but fast in travel speed makes me less likely to put it in a carrier, because it's more effective at getting to a battle zone by itself than others.
    I'd love to see S-size couriers get a nice boost to speed and travel speed, because currently there's very little reason to use them over M transporters once you can afford those.

      There's plenty of reason - the little S couriers are faster. Once a new station gets its initial sales done and needs to continuously sell to customers, the traders start getting sent out with much smaller cargos. The S traders can go faster and hopefully stay out of the way of the pirates better. (Plus, having more trips makes the pilot gain stars a little faster.)

    I completely agree, the Irukanji blows any S ship out of the water for travel speed. I can boost to 5km/s in about two seconds and then go to travel drive, and I can't believe it's got the shield recharge to actually do light attacks on Xenon ships, which I couldn't survive outsite M attack ships before.

      You can easily get to hyperlane speeds with mods, it just needs a while to get up there. The controls are also extremely sensitive, I had to keep MK1 thrusters on it AND install that one mod which reduces mouse deadzone. To also point out, it has no strafe.
      If you want to use it for fighting, the only good way I see it working well is by installing a missile or torpedo launcher and doing bombing runs. I don't know if missiles keep the ship's momentum at least briefly, but zooming in and out does help you avoid getting hurt and you can release your payload much closer than any other fighter would feel comfortable being, so much so that I don't believe flares can do anything even with the NPCs' cheat reaction times. The alternative is repositioning and taking advantage of the superior pitch/yaw, but the ship's just too sensitive and I often have to suffer low average fps.

    I know that Moreya is locked behind a long and difficult storyline and its availability and blueprint depend on some plot decisions, so it's never available early, and it might not available at all in some playthroughs. Still, for those players that got the blueprint, I would like to know your thougths about it. Before ToA I had no doubt, now I'm undecided if the Shih is a better choice for mass production and loading my carriers for the heavy fighter/bomber role. Still the Moreya is my go to ship for interceptor role.
    Also, excluding the Moreya, do you think that Shih is a better choice for intercepting compared to Takoba?
    I know I can look myself the numbers, but infield experience is more valuable.

      Moreya is probably still the best interceptor in the game if you can get it. Shih or Chimera for best heavy fighter and strike craft. Shih is too slow for intercepting imo. You want wat least 300+ m/s for that.

      i feel the Moreya is overlooked by so many, but its definitly my go to non heavy fighter, its also amazing as a light transport for raising rep quick, when not in combat i love using them as temporary couriers, i wouldnt say they are hard to unlock either, you can get access to the blueprint very early if you progress the terran plot to the syn. or if doing budgeted custom starts u can start friendly with the yaki and have access from the start.

      @@KalisaFox It would be awesome if there would be a "Yaki Start" where you'd get the Camouflaging Technology against Xenon all the time or the Pirate Camouflaging Technology in General and could also research it with the other starts.
      ToA that was marketed as the "Pirate Expansion" felt lackluster in that regard, yeah they brought us a new pirate faction with Vigor and a new Economic System, the Closed Loop, but no new game mechanic related to piracy and the game overall still feels very lacking in that regard, since there is next to no blackmarket economy and pirates simply can do stuff you can't do as player like camouflaging their ship with ID's of other factions.

      Lux would be better for intercept duty, but Moreya has 4 guns. 2 guns is usually good enough, though. But it's nice to have 4 on a player ship to switch to something use-case specific, like burst rays to cripple with capital ships. So, yeah, I like to use Moreyas as personal ships peppered around the map to teleport into to help deal with capitals. But many other ships will do well enough in that role, too... basically anything with at least 2 guns (burst ray + tracking launcher with heavy swarm) that can move fast enough to avoid capital ship weapons.

    I want to love the Barracuda, but it's just too slow. It can't even catch a K going full speed. Even being delivered by a carrier it can't catch whatever it's targeting unless they're literally standing still.

    I love that Irukandji, even if I can't pronounce the name or remember how to spell it. I even made a custom start in my Steam Starts guide to let new players start out in that ship!

      It feels like a slightly better Pegasus in all aspects. And it's actually a good fighter, at least in a 1:1 against Xenon. It doesn't get hit much because it's so small.

    as a german who also plays the game in german, 8:22 this just confused me to no end at first. i know that some ship names are different between the english and german version but "irukandji"?
    in the german version this ship is called "qualle" which translates to "jellyfish", i did not expect that the name wasn't simply translated.
    But after a quick google search, turns out that irukandji are a jellyfish species know for being very small. really fits because of the s class ship, didn't expect to learn such an interesting fact today ^^

    Mostly use fighters in the endgame when I can pump out ships like nothing, and usually I end up using the Eclipse Vanguard en masse, because they're easy to get, reasonably tanky, moderate speed and can use most weapons. 4x MK2 shotgun loadout is my default. Can hit everything and even does decent damage against larger targets.
    Any S ship works if you have enough of them and don't care about losing them. They do have the sense to go back for repairs once they get hull damage now though, which I can't remember seeing before. One of them even went to my HQ to repair instead of the carrier (was in the same sector). Maybe all docks were full or something.

    4:25 - the problem here when you come to the Gladius is that as an Out Of Sector calculation forefront, then its unbeatable, and thats because of the Meson Stream and having 4 of them.

    The Shih with Terran or Boron shields is the absolute best. I use mainly Shih and Asp's for fighters. Asp's are not the best regular fighter for AI pilots, but seem to feel like the best bang for the buck.

      Can't put Boron shields on anything but Boron ships, otherwise, yeah it would clearly be best. And paranid is at least just as good as terran for small ships.

    The Lux is pretty awesome too. Handles and accelerates like a dream, 2 guns, fast cruise, fast enough travel speed even with split engines. The shih is awesome but very slow travel speed with split engines and so needs to be carried by something else if you want to move it around... unless you put all speed mods on but that's way too much work to do on every shih you'll have in a fleet. For fleet S ships I just use mk2 equipment (except for mk3 shields) ;)

    Would agree that the barracuda is a lack luster heavy fighter, but would argue its a rather decent carrier strike craft, load a guppy up with some barracuda with torpedoes and go abuse L and XL class ships, the barracudas large missile bay makes it quite good in that role.
    It can also be pressed into fighter work its low speed and high agility make it best in defensive roles, put on ion gatlings and some missiles and the barracuda can be a surprisingly effective fighter screen even if there are better options out there.

      I tried it with the M gunboat. Let them fire a missile at the Xenon station and turn around, let the turrets shoot... (The ion gun turret with the 4,3km range) very very bad result. They don't get close enough for the turrets to hit and shoot the missile everywhere, but not at the station.
      Against the K it was better, they mostly got close enough for the turrets to do a lot of damage, but it would probably have been better with an energy weapon.

      @@steemlenn8797 yes saddly the ai is quite rudimentary, and its scripts a bit meh... e.g. when set on defensiv duty your troops make perfect strafing runs while on bombard they sit right infront of the target and beeing shred to pieces, while in defensive they try shooting defense drones, other fighters etc. with their dumbfire missiles ...

    I actually use the irukandji as interceptor-fighters on my carriers. I equip them with the ion weapon and put 10-15 in an intercept-squad. Their purpose are for weakening the shields and slowing down the fighters for my allround(Arg Ion+Plasma+thermal) shi squadron to erase what has been left over :)

      Irukandji can catch a Xenon T, but that's all they're good for. Lux with mk2 equipment would be better.

    Based on the comment I wrote directly below your comment, I wanted to ask what s class fighter you would recommend to level pilots around a xenon gate? So which one do the ki pilots get along best with and get shot down the least themselves? Thanks 😄

      He basically hinted at it, any ship that has high yaw, pitch and roll stats and also ships that can keep up with enemy ships.
      Xenon S-sized ships have high boost and travel speeds, but are mediocre with their regular top speed, I think it was 300 something to catch up to them to actually shoot them.
      You can see these stats in the ingame encyclopedia.
      Also Captain has compared the ships with their native equipment, so Boron Ships with BOR Equipment.
      I haven't touched the Boron Content yet but I guess, just like you can dow ith Terran Ships, you could attach e.g. TER Engines onto Boron Ships?
      So yeah, you can try mixing stuff to min-max and find a ship that suits best your needs and those of your pilots, good enough speed to catch up with Xenon S-sized ships, good roll, yaw and pitch.
      I don't think AI Pilots strafe that much, so that is something that is only interesting to the Human Player imho. AI's imho fight like they'd fly combat jets but in space and jets physically can't strafe.

      The barracuda can be pressed into a kind of horrifying swarms of torpedo bombers, take the guppy it can launch more or less 16 barracudas within a very short period of time, and each barracuda could have anywhere from 1 to 3 torpedo launchers enabling a torpedo salvo of at most 48 torps at a time.
      Also for the boron anti fighter load outs, ion weapons to drop shields and cripple engines, followed up by a missile to finish off the crippled enemy. And that's just for the S ships.

    I think you overestimate the value of the acceleration for the travel speed. If you use the boost to accelerate and then go into travel mode, you already are at already at a travel speed, which is the maximum of others. From there on its really helpfull that there is enough room to become faster and faster.

    Irukanji is insanely fast. Complete swaps the floor whith the other options. Yes it cant realy fight, but thats not its purpose anyway. You can boost to get to 6k very fast, engange travel drive, and get to 10k in no time.

    The Barracuda is indeed terrible. The only use there is a 3x Torpedo launcher version, because on top of its lack of speed, it also suffers from sub-par S versions of boron weapons (also makes the Mako worthless). Ironically, the Hydra is so damn good in the M clas, only the Kuraokami can compare.

    Kalis is my go to fighter, it is easy to produce bc its terran. It has okay speed, 2 guns and its stupidly tanky. Its great for sending in as a first wave bc it is like a sponge, it just eats up all the dmg from the other more valuable ships like chimeras or torp irukandjies

    I would argue the Boron S (3) shields are the best because of the low recharge delay. Especially for the AI. That's more inmportant than 100 points less for the whole setup of the heavy fighters.

    With the Shih being able to be produced with Closed Loop, it is way ahead of any other fighter of its class, simply because it can be churned out en mass.
    And it´s stats are not bad by any means, sadly the Barracuda wasn´t exactly the fast predator i hoped it to be, and frankly expacted, Boron ships usually are on the speedy side.
    The Vigor are an Argon sub-Faction, that´s why Argon equipment can be Closed Loop produced. So, yes, the Shih can be, ENTIRELY, be produced with Closed Loop.
    In fact all the ToA ships can, and they all use Argon parts everywhere, only the Erlkönig and the Astrid uses their own unique parts. But i am dissapointed with the Astrid.
    Scouts are an interesting topic in this though, because the Irukandji is really awesome, but still there is the Closed Loop-producable Lux...

      Shih is not closed loop exclusive. It takes the same materials as any other ship - hull parts and energy cells. No difference there.
      Closed loop only affects argon equipment, some teladi equipment, and missiles, drones, satellites etc.

      @@kajarslibrary5404 Well by that metric, every ship except for the Terran and possibly Boron ones are closed loop, as that merely means the modules are build with hullparts, claytronics and energy cells.
      I do not yet have tried to build Boron ships myself.

      @@sim.frischh9781 Correct! Boron ships require water to be built so they don't fully fit with the Closed Loop style.
      But yeh, as long as you use Argon equipment and basic weapons like Pulse, Bolt, Plasma, you can make ships with just those three wares.
      Using Claytronics though is rather expensive and will really slow down station construction. Claytronics are really complex and extremely slow to produce.

      @@kajarslibrary5404 Claytronics come out of the Scrap Processors, so you build a station with Scrap processor in a region with a lot of wrecks, like Faulty Logic or the last of the Silent Witness sectors.
      Send out those wreck harvester ships and let them bring back those cubes.
      The process requires insane amounts of energy, so put about 18 solar energy modules for each processor on the station.
      With that, you can put a ship production module on and produce whatever Argon equipped ship you like.

    The "Arr-ress" is pronounced "Air-reez", as in: Ares, the greek god of war.

    The Shih may be the "Best" Heavy Fighter, but it looks like absolute dogs**t aesthetics wise. Just looking at the thing makes me nauseous.

      I love the way it looks. Best looking ship in the game... The Kyd looks cool too, but it's a crap ship. I bet you'd hate Minmatar ships in Eve Online. ;)

      @@DaemonJax I did. Didn't really like the looks of ANY of the ships in Eve Online. One of the reasons I stopped playing.
