    Mixing / beatmatching oldschool-style completely by ear and playing to the audience with an un pre=arranged set, but still with syncronised visuals Is impressive and unxepected vs the publc's perception of what headlining djs/ producers do!

    I don't event like trance that much, but I really respect Armin for making his sets live and not faking it. Little strange that he only uses two decks, instead of going with 4-deck traktor setup or some crazy Live set, but I guess trance tracks are so dense you don't really need more then 2 playing at once.

      I don't think he deserves respect just because he mixes live, it's his job and every DJ should do that. I respect him for many other things, but I am also surprised because he only mixes with two players. One thing I don't understand is what happens when he wants to play a song from the middle and not from the beginning?? I suppose that he should find the minute he wants to start playing the song and put both players on that time, but it seems a bit complicated because he should start looping both players just at the same time

    SMPTE is locked but there are two different signals for left and right. So the 2 extra players are locked in timecode with the CDJs for the audio. So when he uses the jog wheel to pitch bend the timecode CDJs are also in sync. The two players on both ends are basically a reference for the video to know what time the song is and where to start playing.

    There's one thing I don't get. Fine, the SMPTE triggered by the fader start runs at the same time as its twin CDJ... But when Aarmin brings in the second track and he has to speed it up because it is kicking a tad too late, he only syncs the song, not the SMPTE signal... So the video and the song are no longer exactly in sync? Or can Sander fix that up at the visuals booth?

    I've been always wondering about what waste is to buy 2 CDJ-2000 just to play a signal with them. Those players could be used for mashups for example there are situations when least 3 players are needed. But okay, Armin uses prerecorded mashups, no problem, and his shows with these video elements are awesome. But let's see it, isn't it funny that there are 2 of the most expensive players for mixing, lots of the DJs would be happy if they could have them, and those players are just playing a simple signal, again and again :D

    • @Dazt4r
      @Dazt4r 8 лет назад +1

      +FFmybest You're missing the point. Most if not all clubs and events have 4 of the latest CDJs with spares or equal quality, it wouldn't be difficult for someone of his level to state in his rider that 4 CDJs must be supplied.
      And anyway, $3000 might be a lot for you, but that's likely half his hourly rate.

    • @phaselead_dj
      @phaselead_dj 6 лет назад

      Another point of view here: CDJ-2000s used for STMPE signal can also be a BACK UP player. Yes, STMPE signal can be played by cheap players like CDJ-350s, but it can't be an alternative when a CDJ-2000 is broken down during tour and another one becomes really necessary.

    I have mixed with fader triggers, and at that point, you use EQ and Trim to control the output volume to the PA system. I'm not sure if that's how Armin does it, but that's what I've done and it works great.

    If you listen carefully he did say "This is what goes on in my Headphones" and obviously he wasn't using headphones.
    What he is demonstrating is what usually happens during his gigs and what usually goes on in his headphones. if he used his headphones you guys wouldn't be able to hear what goes on in his ears.

    you mix on cue if you arent syncing visuals. he has created this way of doing it which ties up the faders. thats why he mentions "this is what you would normally hear in my headphones, not to the crowd". you can see him using the trims (the grey knob above the treble volume at the top of the channel) for channel volume rather than the faders/

    Haha! I see where you're coming from that he's already experienced and too used to what he started with doing. I like that he continues to use the "oldfashioned" and more complicated route because it's "fun" since you can interact with your set up more.

    There is a difference between being a DJ and a live performer..

    This is a very clever solution..Inspiring.. got me thinking of using the CDJ2000 hdmi output to send track data to the video/lighting system, while at the same time syncing the tempo... all over a network cable or wifi.
    Totally doable.

    you call him fake but he said before that doesn't need to prove he can DJ he has been doing it his whole life and at the end of the day it's all about putting on a great performance (sound/visuals), so the audience go home happy.

    For that I would suggest using serato with ableton bridge.. set your beat grids right on the tracks in serato and use the bridge for midi/smpte triggers to VJ software.. if you set you quantisation right you can hit the midi clip launch, drop your track and the video will cue on the drop/breakdown when you want it to, in perfect sync and will follow your loops

    How does he split the fader start to both players? This is the only part I don't understand.

    use the network cable for fader start.. plug all of them into a network switch, assign both decks on the left as CDJ 1, both decks on the right as CDJ 2.. they both react to the same fader start but on the proper audio signal is actually routed through that channel
