    Paul marries Princess Irulan, the Emperor's daughter, for strategic and political reasons rather than for love.
    Consolidating Power;
    Legitimizing His Rule:
    By marrying Princess Irulan, Paul gains a legitimate claim to the Imperial throne, solidifying his position as Emperor. This marriage helps to legitimize his rule in the eyes of the other noble houses and the wider galactic empire.
    Political Stability;
    Ensuring Political Stability:
    The marriage serves as a means to prevent further conflict and rebellion by uniting two powerful factions-the House of Atreides and the Corrino family (the Emperor's family). This union helps to stabilize the political situation in the empire.
    Strategic Alliances;
    Forming Alliances:
    By aligning himself with the Emperor's family, Paul can secure valuable alliances and reduce the number of enemies he faces. It also ensures that the Corrino family, and those loyal to them, have a vested interest in the stability of Paul's rule.
    Protecting His People;
    Safeguarding the Fremen:
    The Fremen are crucial to Paul's power. By becoming Emperor, Paul can better protect the Fremen from the oppression and exploitation they suffered under previous regimes.
    Ensuring the Future;
    Dynastic Continuity:
    The marriage to Irulan ensures a line of succession that is recognized by all major powers in the empire. This helps to secure the future of his descendants and the stability of his reign.
    Strategic Use of Marriage;
    Maintaining Control Over Arrakis:
    As the Emperor, Paul gains control over Arrakis, the only source of the spice melange, which is the most valuable substance in the universe. This control over the spice is crucial for maintaining his power and influence.
    Emotional and Personal Considerations;
    Love and Loyalty:
    Despite marrying Irulan, Paul remains emotionally committed to his true love, Chani. The marriage to Irulan is purely a political maneuver, and Paul makes it clear that Chani will always be his true partner.

    This is not meant to be a rude comment, but I don't get how they don't understand Chani's frustration.
    The movie has told you that the Lisan Al Ghaib prophecy is a superstition planted by the Bene Gesserit to allow them to control the people. Paul knows this, and the more Paul leans into becoming this prophetic figure, the more he is intentionally manipulating her people in order to pursue his own goals.
    She loves her people and knows he is likely to get many of them killed if he pursues war. He is turning the people she loves into fanatical followers.

    • @a_kazakis
      @a_kazakis 8 месяцев назад +1

      Well, to play devil's advocate, we as an audience know the prophecy is false, but after seeing every single art of the prophecy come true, it would be reasonable to assume it's legit from her perspective. Having said that, I really enjoyed Chani's portrayal in the movie.

    • @sk_lurks
      @sk_lurks 8 месяцев назад +5

      @@a_kazakis I guess I just get a little baffled that the writer/director went out of their way to rewrite Chani to make her very critical of Paul's actions to help point out to the audience that his actions are at best questionable and at worst quite evil, and people still miss it.
      I guess that's the power of the protagonist's perspective. We will always sympathize with the character whose story we are following.

    They could shoot the harvester first, but at that range it would have to be done with a laser, which the thopter would notice and blast that area from above. They can't shoot the aircraft with lasers, if a laser hits a shield it triggers a thermonuclear explosion which would kill pretty much everyone around. Lasers gave basically infinite range so you could hit them from far away, but they need the scrap from the wrecks of machines and water from the crew, all lost if everything gets nuked. That's why they engage the harvester first at close range, it forces the thopter to behave predictably, they won't shoot their own harvester, and once it's down there's no other shields to worry about, that's why the lasers don't pop up until the aircraft is down

    31:18 Remember that in an earlier scene the reverend mother that advises the emperor ordered one of the women in their order to get pregnant with a girl from the Harkonnens? That is what the bene gesserits do, they mix the noble bloodlines in order to eventually get to a point when one of the descendants would have incredible mental power and the self-control to use it properly. They are basically breeding them to achieve what they want, like a form of eugenics. Paul's mother was one of those babies. The women from the bene gesserit order seem to be the daughters of men from the great houses.

  • @kayosiiii
    @kayosiiii 8 месяцев назад +3

    I thought I would take a bit of time to explain why Chani is upset.
    The Lissan Al Gaib prophecy has a fictional origin. It was created by the Bene Gesserit several thousand years ago and merged into the indigenous culture. This is distinct from the Bene Gesserit notion of the kwisatz haderach which is a Bene Gesserit (prophecy isn't quite the right term - maybe project) - whatever it is it's a breeding program. It's from this that Paul inherits his powers.
    Chani is amongst the Fremen who recognises that the idea of the Lissan al gaib was manufactured by outsiders to manipulate her people. She wants the liberation of her people to come from her people not from the outside as the outsiders will use her people for their own ends. Chani accepts paul because he is humble and willing to become part of her people. Paul turning around and using the prophecy to take control of her people is something that goes against everything she stands for. Paul betrays her core principles, I think this is a much larger betrayal to her taking the princesses hand in marriage.
    I am glad though that the movie still lands if you miss these details.

    In the Dune universes Noble marriages are more like business contracts. Love rarely enters into it. Most nobles have concubines (like Jessica) that are more like wives as we know them. Paul is only going to marry Irulan to take the throne. It is something I feel the recent movies did not really explain this. Also, Paul is basically a Male Bene Gesserit, so he has the ability to heal himself almost instantly.

  • @douglascampbell9809
    @douglascampbell9809 8 месяцев назад +22

    You are looking at it with modern marriage ideals. In this universe a marriage is more often for strategic goals.
    The concubine like Paul's Mother is more likely to be the love of the male.
    That's why Paul's Father had not married his Mother, His hand in marriage was still open for an alliance with another House.

    In the Dune universe, lasers hitting shields cause a nuclear explosion. The Harvester was not shielded because shields attract and enrage worms in the desert, but the ornitopter was shielded because, since it flies, it didn't incur the risk of attracting worms. The Fremen knew all of this and didn't dare fire their lasers before the ornipopter was destroyed because they could end up accidentally hitting its shield and bascially killing everybody.
    So they waited until Chani and Paul took down the ornitopter with anti-air weapons and then they were free to use lasers to destroy the Harvester.

The movie adaption of Chani only makes sense if 1) she isn't the daughter of Liet Kynes, 2) Water isn't a scarcity on Arrakis and 3) She just wants to wage endless guerilla warfare against the Imperium until......... They give up?? Your planet has the most valuable resource to humankind. No one is going to leave you alone and there will be endless conflict forever. In the book Jessica has an epiphany about how Paul is ascending in leadership and rethinks her life choices. She realizes that she and Leto cheated themselves of a lot of happiness by not getting married. Jessica actually advises Paul to marry Chani for love.

    Ladies, Austin Butler (Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen) played Elvis in the Elvis movie. Lea Seydoux, French actress, from Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Spectre & No Time to Die plays Lady Margot. Paul distracted Feyd by allowing him to stab his shoulder while Paul pulled the other blade from his side and stabbed Feyd higher in his chest, probably the heart. Of course, director Denis Villeneuve is responsible for the film's vision and grandeur just like he did for Blade Runner 2049. Part 3 purportedly based on Dune Genesis is in development. Great reaction, Ellie and Michelle.👍

    Paul can't marry Chani because she's a Fremen and would never be accepted by the Imperium. Marrying Irulan is the clear choice. In the book, Chain understands this and accepts her role as the concubine, but the movie changes this in order for audiences to have a proxy and someone they can relate with.

    for yalls information paul is not a hero , he will do horrible things in his time of being emperor like kill 60 bln people in the holy war , although he's commit those things so the future in which humanity ultimately survive will come to fruition , his rule will be a lesson to humanity as a whole,
    and the marriage is with princess irulan is purely for political reasons , chani is his true love.
    on top of that the prophecy is just a story they were selling for a Loooong time to fremen it's not real , like bene gesserit said " the path has been layed" that means he had all the componets to appear as a prophet to the fremen but in fact he is just a foreign aristocrat taking advantage of locals to turn them into his minions to achieve revenge and the points i mentioned above.

    • @donny1960
      @donny1960 8 месяцев назад

      One correction. Paul does not cause the killing of those people. He tried as hard as he could to not go down this path. It is the Fremen that go on a frenzy. All those years of being slaves and hunted "rats" caused the Holy War. Paul was just the weapon they used to get justice. Think about it........... Stilgar basically forced Jessica to become a Reverend Mother in order for Paul to be the Lisan al Gaib. He saw the opportunity to free his people and made it happen. Paul was just the tool. Same with "The ONE" the Bene Gesserit were hoping to create. Paul became what they wanted. Only was out of their control. Also remember. If you read the other books in the Dune saga. Paul started the process to save humanity. If he chose any other path. He saw that humanity would become extinct. So not the "fairtale" hero we are used to. But his effort did create heroic things to take place.

      @@SalikCollins He will cause the death of millions to save the rest of humanity. You do not understand what "heroic" means. Do you know how many Germans and Japanese were killed in WW2? But we the victors, still celebrate our victory. And the "heroes" that made it happen. Sometimes the "real" heroes are the ones that make difficult and unpopular decisions in the name of the greater good. Herbert is famous for saying that Dune is a cautionary tale. But the quote puts the burden of fault on the followers of the leader. But in the sequela. Herbert lays out exactly what would have happened if Paul did not choose how he did. So, he was a flawed hero. Buit still a hero. He saves humanity. Can't get much better than that.

    • @donny1960
      @donny1960 8 месяцев назад

      Well, I missed them because they were not there. at least for long. Stilgar forced Jessica to become a Reverend Mother in order for Paul to lead them "to paradise". Paul was being used. Not the other way around. At the beginning of the movie Paul did want revenge. But for the whole middle part he was trying as hard as he could to avoid the Holy War. He literally told everyone this. I guess you missed it. One of the themes of a good book, and Dune in particular. Is that the characters have a change of heart. They grow and evolve. Paul is not the same person at the end of the book as he was at the beginning. He realized there was more at stake than just his personal feelings and desire to avenge his dad's murder.
