    Frank Herbert, the author of the Dune novels, once stated in an interview that his main inspiration for Dune came from how people can so easily rally behind charismatic leaders throughout history, whether those leaders believed their actions were for the good of their people, like George Washington, or were downright heinous and cruel, like Hitler. Dune is essentially a character study of what draws people to these leaders and how hazardous it could be.

    19:22, The blueish scarf in Chani's hair is a symbol that she is a young Fremen woman in love. In the books it had a deeper meaning of motherhood and recent birth. But any scene in the movie where Chani wears it you know she loves Paul. When she stops wearing it that is when their relationship (or her perception of it) changes.

    The transmutation of the Water of Life by Jessica changed it from a poison into a consciousness enhancing and expanding drug. This is why her unborn daughter could now talk to her. There is another side effect though, which is that absorbing the Water of Life into their physical being also unlocks the ability to access genetic memories from their lineage, which has unintended consequences for the future...

    The Fremen WERE mad, they were absolutely insane and rabid. They get a very nice treatment in these movies but in the books when the sardaukar attacked the south (not the local base) the women threw their babies at them to distract them so they could attack! You don't get the zealotry of these people here but Paul was RIGHT to be terrified of them. It was like riding a tiger, great ride, great weapon but you can never get off and never sleep! That is the same here, they left arrakis and went off into the universe to kill 65 BILLION people!!! The book is not nearly as pretty as the movies, love both though.

      Actually it's even more tunable than that . The field can stop even the passage of air, otherwise how did the Baron survive the gas attack from Leto in the first movie. This makes fighting with them and against them a more refined conflict as an aggressor has to gauge the speed of attacks and a defender on how to move to cause the shield to aid in repelling an attack and how high strong to set the shield. After all in most cases you need to breath. The problem with a movie vs a series you have to trim something, like granular details. A series though can't command the money for production., except if your Disney!

    The religious group which Paul's mother belongs to (the Bene Genesserit) visited Dune hundreds of years before the events of the movie. A Bene Gesserit from a group called the Missionora Protectiva came to the planet and manipulated the religious beliefs of the Fremen by performing "miracles" using her powers and making "predictions" which her Sister (Jessica) would one day come and make good on. It's why they have a "wild" Reverend Mother and a ceremony for drinking the Water of Life. It also made the Fremen more aggressive, turning the whole culture in to an army that could be directed by a Bene Gesserit who knew the right words to say and the right things to do. In the movie, Chani sees this and resents it (in the book, she's absolutely OK with it). The story is about (among other things) how this gets away from them, and how the warrior culture and the Savior they create for it escapes their control.

  • @Socragames
    @Socragames 5 месяцев назад +3

    10:22 "why didn't she tell them?" Because the fremen live on necessity; they could use Paul who was young, but not his mother, who wouldn't be able to learn their ways sufficiently. However, a reverend mother is a role, so it's a way to not be killed. If she was refused from becoming a mother reverend, she might not be permitted to live. So she hid the fact that she was pregnant.

      @@jamesrobinson2138 Functionally, the end is roughly the same (Paul defeats Feyd in single combat, marries Irulan and becomes the Emperor of the Universe). There's a few differences, though. In the book Jessica has given birth to her daughter Alia; she kills the Baron. This is despite her being a toddler; she's "preborn" and has the memories of all of her ancestors (including, significantly for later novels, the Baron himself!). There's also a subplot about Feyd having been implanted with a post hypnotic suggestion to be "stunned" by the Bene Gesserit during his time with Margot; Paul is aware of the command word but refuses to use it (even when it looks like Feyd is about to beat him) so that he can take the throne "by his own hand" and free of debt to the BG. Chani is supportive of Paul's decision to marry Irulan; she understands that it's a loveless political marriage and that Irulan will probably never even be on the same planet as Paul ever again, let alone bear his children (this isn't exactly what happens; Paul and who gets to have his kids is a plot in Dune: Messiah, the second novel in the series). It's kind of like the difference between the ending of Watchmen: The Movie and the original comic: there's a few big differences, it winds up in roughly the same place, but some of those differences are significant enough to "count".

      @@molasorrosalom4846 there are spoilers involved but, yes, there are even worse things awaiting the human race and through hardship and tragedy, both Paul, and afterwards, Emperor Leto II prepare humanity for even worse circumstances.
      This is off course a utilitarian trope that only makes sense in a universe where prescience is possible. It is not limited to Dune as it is also explored in the stories portrayed by Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" series of books (psico-mathematics if I remember correctly).
      The trope does not exist in a void as humanity has already gone through many calamities and learned something from each one but at an amazing cost in lives. These writers were influenced by WW2 and the USSR and like to portray the fallibility of mankind and the need for struggle to adapt and survive the ever growing threat of annihilation.
      Frank Herbert's Dune had already gone through cataclysmic scenarios one of which was the Butlerian Jihad that almost completely destroyed humanity.
      Even Star Trek (TNG) was written from the stand point of humanity at it's knees after a devastating world war and growing into a new human race with new goals and renewed spirit.
      The big difference is the prescience. A messianic figure that "knows" what's going to happen. How far into the future can it see? How much more tyrannical does it need to become for humanity to grow into the next stage of social evolution to stave off the next cataclysmic calamity?
      Paul knew that the possibility existed of the new holy war could come about but he needed to save the freemen and wanted to give them their desired green paradise. Holy war is the only way to subjugate the Landsraad into the changing empire and dissuade them from simply annihilating the Fremen.

      The biggest differences are that in the books, Alia was actually born, and she was the one to kill the Baron when she was just 2 years old. And there was no tension between Chani and Paul in the books; she was pretty much 100% on his side from start to finish.

      Yeah the movie doesn't do the raptors' intelligence justice. It's much the same with Dune. I can't fault the acting, but most of the characters in these movies are a disappointment. The writing makes these movies much less than the books. The director doesn't think much of the audience's intelligence.

    The other noble families refused to accept Paul Muad'Dib's claim to the emperor's throne. When he said, "lead them to paradise," what he meant was "kill them." That order was what constituted the holy war.

    If I say "There is going to be the tallest house ever made in my backyard" and then after 50 years I've built the tallest house in my backyard, does that make me a prophet?
    Thats the problem with the prophecy in this movie. The bene gesserit have built the Lisan Al Gaib over many generations. That doesn't mean he is actually holy or anything it just means it was planned and by design.

    It would be great if you reacted to the Dune (1984) movie, it holds better to the story with the character interactions.
    The reason Paul feared the Prophesy of Maud'Dib's Jihad was because he foresaw the outcome, over 61 billion people killed, and over 90 planets "sterilized" where the Fremen killed everyone on those planets.

    YOU NEED TO READ THE BOOK!!!!!!! The movies did such an amazing job of translating the book, but you miss so much without reading. Paul knows he's using religious tropes, but he also just wants to help. His sister plays a MUCH more important role, and his mother is much easier to understand and respect. The link between the two families has more weight. The weight and understanding of Paul's visions are better explained. There are entire subplots not mentioned, like the battle against the spacing guild and why they are completely frozen by Paul's knowledge. Paul doesn't even threaten anything with nuclear bombs, that is an affectation of the movies. Even the thread of manipulating religion is completely different in the book.

    • @SmolFenFen
      @SmolFenFen 4 месяца назад

      There is even the entire subplot of learning how Paul's Fedaykin are equal to the Emperor's Sardaukar, and how "prison planets" are used to create exceptional soldiers. The weight of that knowledge reaffirms Paul's father's concept of "desert power" but in a darker way. The movie also end's differently than the book. Paul doesn't end the book by starting a holy war, in fact it seems he wins perfectly, the holy war comes later in the sequal book, and only because the Bene Gesserit find a way to hide parts of the future from Paul.

    • @SmolFenFen
      @SmolFenFen 4 месяца назад

      51:57 this is also MUCH better explained in the book T.T Chani knows he is not betraying her, in fact she is proud and supports Paul for subjugating the entire empire. it's only in the sequel book that she worries about Paul's marital faith in her. it's even part of the Bene Gesserit plot to blind Paul's vision.

    33:30 It is a different culture, yes. But in the book, the baron is a child molester (and more), and he also desires fayd-rautha. So that it feels weird in the movie could be intentional. However, to je fair, I also saw it as a kiss between nobility. Like a sign of respect.

    31:15 in the books, it is implied that the Baron has been abusing Feyd just like he does his male concubines.
    So Feyd actually does try to assassinate his uncle in retaliation by having poison needles put into one of his concubine’s body at strategic places.
    The Baron discovers this and instead of ending Feyd, he sees it as a sign that his nephew is capable of hard decisions. Thereafter, a truce is called between them.

    Just adding context to some of the things the movie did not mention. 1. The Black liquid the baron keeps taking baths has Spice in it, after Paul's father poisoned him, his health deteriorates, thats why he has that round robot with him, dude is in life support.
    2. The Spice comes from the worms, who consumes Spice have their life extended, like a lot, peoples, minds become like computers, they can see alternate futures, that is used for space travel since in this universe AI is forbidden.
    3. Paul know all, just like bill Murray know everyone in the City in groundhog day, anything he could learn in any futures its his now, any information that he could learn in the futures is his. That is how he, his mother and the Bene Jesserit have conversations like if was telepathy, in reality, they know what the other was going to say, so they don't need to use words.

    The adaptation of Dune has finished. It took two films to adapt just the first book. The second book is the shortest in the saga, with a lot of political conspiracy, but I can't say whether Denis Villeneuve will adapt the sequels.
    I recommend the film Sicario (2015) by the same director; Starring Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow), Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin (Deadpool, Dune and Avengers 3 - 4).
    God Bless you.

    I think in the end chanis nightmare that she had for her people came true.
    A person from another world with interests besides arrakis well-being became the spiritual and political leader of the fremen. The fremen fought in the beginning for freedom for themselves and their home. Now they are basically the willing warrior-slaves for paul and leave their home to fight for paul to get the throne (which the fremen does not benefit from at all - what do they gain by leaving the place they wamt to turn into paradise and killing?). And in doing so they start inpauls name a holy war that will kill millions of people (the very thing he saw in his vision and was afraid if - but fundamentalism has a life if its own).
    Dune is a saga of hiw dangerous charmismatic leaders are, and how belief turns into atrocious violence. Paul uses the fake proohecy but is also its victim, and millions of people in the universe pay the price.

    Paul often misses crucial chances.
    When he turned his back on Chani, he could have said ( as he does in the book ) 'she will have nothing of me' ).
    Later Jessica says to Chani 'history will call us wives'.
    But this film doesn't do that.

      since this movie got green-lit with dune messiah being uncertain
      my theory is that Villeneuve reserved a major character to be very openly opposed to the idea of Paul willingly stepping into the role of Messiah
      which remember was THE message of the original books: beware of charismatic leaders
      if he made Chani all supportive just like in the books maybe the message would be lost, without a chance to adapt dune messiah
      personally I think it works great for the silver screen
      it adds tension to the plot and a layer complexity to Chani's character that simply wasn't there in the original work

      @@matheussanthiago9685 Not only does it do this really well, it also gives us someone to root for as Paul becomes more detached and calculated (more Harkonnen i guess). imho movies rely much more on having a sympathetic protagonist than books do, so when Paul starts acting in a way that is hard to empathize with, Chani stands in for him.

    I should point out, Paul is not the good guy, the original intent behind the Dune books was a cautionary tale regarding demagoguery, and hero worship - that sort of thing, etc...
    Basically Paul was not supposed to be liked, but frank herbert felt that people weren't understanding the meaning behind his book this character, that we are not supposed to like, and thus lead to the 2nd book being written to be even darker than the 1st.
    Wont get into the other books because there is a 3rd movie coming, and unless you've read them I'd end up giving spoilers.

My dad volunteered for UDT under water demolition team where navy seals come from, making me grow up different than others. In high school dad saw me put on 3lbs working for his friends hamburger joint. Dad got me a job in paper mill grinder room making 160° pulp for paper. All logs been soaking in river for 6 yrs making the water kogged an really heavy. Everyone called grinder room, "the Hell hole". It was hell on earth! Months later i dreaded a required college dance class. Beginning class, most beautiful girl says, we only has two more dances last class an we could have danced together! Are you counting down ro dance with me? Because I'm counting down to dance with you! Laughter she says, every girl in this place is counting down to dance with you! Why's that? Because you hold us like you love us! Well, for you an only you, that true, I do love you! She just faints an fall to the floor. I fall to the floor catching her, before she hits the dance floor. I think she needs some water, I say! Yeah, she needs some water! Just like they needed water on dune so bad they drained water from bodies!

    The point of the Dune novels is that messiahs, emperors and prophets are terrible leaders, and that people should rule themselves. At the end of the movie (and the book), Paul and the Fremen embark on a jihad across the galaxy that kills untold billions. All for a prophecy that was completely made up.
