Love watching you two play with your Sacks. I knew of the NES game, but didn't realize it was an arcade game as well. Looks pretty fun. I'll have to try it out soon.
Wow didn't expect the game to be that short. And I love how it jumps from fantasy to HR Giger sci-fi for no reason lol. Great video guys, I never saw this in the arcades so this is awesome to see. Hope you play the ALIENS or ALIEN VS. PREDATOR game in honor of the pseudo-Giger level. Thanks for playing and posting. 10:36 Dave with all the cool shirts you own, you need one with this exact phrase.
This was one of my favorite arcade games used to play it in my local pizzeria. I picked up the NES game back in 90 because it was the closest to this game I would ever get to play at home. And I enjoyed playing that game as well. Surprised Genesis didn't pick it up back then.
I have a nostalgia for the NES version, it was one of a few games I had for a long time. I know it's not great, but still love it. I actually didn't know it was an arcade game first.
HR didnt do any work on this game, but that "alien" is actually from his real necromicon art book, with the wings and all. Its the same book that Ridley Scott chose another picture that led to the actual xenomorph in the movie Alien, Necronom IV! Not licensed, but cool to see, some even say that pic with the wings may have influenced the queen alien design from Aliens.
I do respect the fact that rather than go the typical MAME route, they borrow actual arcade boards, though in a later version of MAME the differences are likely going to minimal/non-existent (at least for older games)
Good video, but man like a lot of arcade games NastyAx seems to have a couple sections at the end that are just designed to munch quarters. By the time you get to those sections, your sunk cost is so high, you just keep putting the quarters in to see the end.
Oh my glob! I love this game!!! if I had a youtube channel as awesome as yours I would do a pre boss music top 10 thing....like Astanax...Megaman..Castlevania...stuff like that :)
Maybe it’s just nostalgia but the NES version is one of my favorite games on the console fun game good graphics for the time an the music was good to, still own a copy till this day and still enjoy playing
I've been developing a Darkstalkers fan game (w/sprite-rips) starring Morrigan which uses this very gameplay mechanic w/a little bit of Castlevania power-up system added for good measure.
After finally seeing this arcade original, it's really interesting to me to see how much Astynax and Ninja Gaiden/Ryukenden have in common! Both started as relatively standard genre arcade games inspired by various Americana, only to go on to be NES games with strangely engaging cinematic and musical motifs. Particularly interesting is how Geiger homages are used in Arcade Astyanax and NES Ninja Gaiden to represent the demonic heart of the enemy forces. Though, while Ninja Gaiden on NES was really careful to make the Geiger homages distinctly demonic, it seems like Arcade Astynax got a bit lazy, just directly porting the Space Jockey ship and a Xenomorph into dot art. All things considered, though, this really strengthens the direction behind one of my own works in progress, which is basically an homage to NES Ninja Gaiden, NES Astyanax, and even a few other (but lesser known) NES games of the same nature. I think the original name is pronounced like "Astyan Axe" with "Astyan" sounding like "Italian". Then, with the advent of the NES, we have the character, named "Astyanax", like "uhst-eye-uhn-acks". That's my headcanon, but I think it's practically as good as official word. The NES game specifically states that it is supposed to be an ancient Greek name, if I remember right, and that's what I've always based the latter pronunciation on. Anyway, maybe one day I'll get to see you guys doing a co-op run of my game. Who would pick Axe Boi and who would pick Katana Boi? :D
I hated Astyanax on NES bitd but have grown to appreciate it more after getting familiar with the attack bar and it's connection to The Legendary Axe. Same here, never saw this at any arcade, seems like it would be a decent earner. Some decent graphics but yeah that music ain't great. I think this would have been sweet on the GEN/MD, although I suppose 2PL on NES might have worked with sprites of Karnov/Rygar scale. The arcade sprites are actually smaller than the NES proportionally speaking, always thought the NES ones were too big and didn't give enough gameplay space.
A FUCKING Rastan shirt? That is TOTALLY AWESOME. When are you two gonna play THAT game? Keep up the AMAZING work, Gents. Top 10 Arcade Memories? One of mine is Rastan
Game Sack I have it on Mame and enabled all cheats...like invincibility and the best sword and all the items. and it is still hard. I have no idea how they expected anyone to beat this game. I have fond memories of playing this at the roller rink and thinking I must have gotten so far in the game when I died. little did I know it just keeps going. the hardness level reminds me of superman in the arcade or ninja Gaiden in the arcade. or toki in the arcade. all decent games. but nearly impossible.
Is it bad that i just assume you guys are emulating? You show a picture of a board, but not and actual board in the video. Would be nice to see, maybe talk about the tech for the board. I know Joe loves getting tech talky.
It's the real board. We're not gonna lift the board up or move the camera around. There's nothing tremendously special about the board other than that it needs a JAMMA adapter.
Thank you. 🌱🌹 Interesting game. 👌😍 But too much time is a short game.😀 🎮 Maximum thirty minutes. 🕛🎮🕧 But it's really nice to play this game even with being short. 😊👍
Watching you guys play games brings back memories of when I used to watch my friends play games. When I had friends. Good times...
The sound the guys make when they swing their axes, sounds like the sound the guy from Strider makes when he swings his sword.
Ah yes. My favorite gaming duo.
I'm glad you guys brought enough quarters to beat the game
I normally despise let's plays but the editing and the unusual choice of games really grabbed me, ever since the first episode
The Legendary Axe, the Astyan Axe.
Legendary is better than Astyan.
@@GameSack Asssstyanax!
I just played this but on the NES, which I found @ a Goodwill for $0.20:)
I just love how so many games in the 90s had an H.R. Giger Alien inspired final stage and boss.
Love watching you two play with your Sacks.
I knew of the NES game, but didn't realize it was an arcade game as well. Looks pretty fun. I'll have to try it out soon.

Love this new series sackers, keep pumpin' em out!

You guys just saved man kind from aliens !
Okay Dave is not drinking a beer, I want a refund.
Always Great to see you guys !
What a great morning treat before work, Thanks guys :)
I approve this... because my username was derived from the NES game.
When the game suddenly turns into aliens it took me a back in a jarring, yet awesome way. Shame it's so short, I'd like to more of the alien shizzle!
lol.. I love how Joe gives Dave a dig every chance he gets for Nintendo games not having a lot of two player games...
I have a nostalgia for the NES version, it was one of a few games I had for a long time. I know it's not great, but still love it. I actually didn't know it was an arcade game first.
Do the Willow arcade game next!
We'd love to but we don't have that one.
Do you have Legend of Hero Tonma?
Orange balls: healthy
Purple balls: oxygen deficient
Great ending to this video, everything in the final stage is hilarious! You guys should call out Alien copying in other games. There are so many.
HR didnt do any work on this game, but that "alien" is actually from his real necromicon art book, with the wings and all. Its the same book that Ridley Scott chose another picture that led to the actual xenomorph in the movie Alien, Necronom IV! That was quick. Hopefully that PCB wasn't too expensive. Lol.
Oh man. I remember playing this on the arcade
Ah how I love Playing With Sacks
In regards to the first level boss. Rectum? No, you killed him!
Love it I just beat the nes version last night for the first time!
Sean Davis I did it many times when I was a kid in the first 90's. Congrates! Is a hard one! (And an awesome game. Memories!)
I do respect the fact that rather than go the typical MAME route, they borrow actual arcade boards, though in a later version of MAME the differences are likely going to minimal/non-existent (at least for older games)
And I thought I was done playing with sacks for the night... wait what?
Thiiis guy
Sexy
It would be cool if you all did some more "Same Name, Different Game" videos in the future.
Joe needs sunscreen in October here in Denver!
Nice Rastan shirt.
RASTAN = R + SATAN. In Japanese R=L and phonetically L is spelled EL, so RASTAN = EL SATAN.
8:34 imagine the rage you would have after dying putting ¢50 in the cabinet then die again immediately as you start.
is calling the axe a sword some kind of inside joke?
In Ghosts 'n' Goblins everybody calls the sword item a knife, cause you throw it :p
The blue main character looks a lot like Magic Sword from Capcom? Did the same designer work on that game too? Even the power up meter is similar.
Good video, but man like a lot of arcade games NastyAx seems to have a couple sections at the end that are just designed to munch quarters. By the time you get to those sections, your sunk cost is so high, you just keep putting the quarters in to see the end.

At least you got to beat some aliens with your axes!
Wow, I had no idea that there was an arcade version of this game!

The game Dark Seed did use artwork by the real H.R. Giger. You can play it for free on your PC now, as it's abandonware.
Ì recall the nes version. it was...ok. Never seen the arcade version until now. Very nice.
I need to play this.
It's great, the NES version is really good too.
I've been developing a Darkstalkers fan game (w/sprite-rips) starring Morrigan which uses this very gameplay mechanic w/a little bit of Castlevania power-up system added for good measure.
I believe it's pronounced something like, UH STY YUH NAX
"I didn't know Arcade games had slowdown" For a second, he forgot Double Dragon existed :D
Oh well never mind it was so short. It was a pleasure for us viewers as always.
Interestin, I didn't know there was an Arcade version. Let alone one that has 2 player simultaneous co-op. I like the NES game.
After finally seeing this arcade original, it's really interesting to me to see how much Astynax and Ninja Gaiden/Ryukenden have in common! good looking game..one of those that would be more fun 2 player for sure.
3:10 It's a (say it as MJR) HIDDEN GEM! ;)
funny I was playing the nes version of this recently and said to myself "you know this is a lot like the legendary axe"
That PCBs in good condition though. It's going for quite a bit these days.
Is it?
You bet your Astyanax.
I mean it's about 300 bucks or so last time I saw it for sale on the forums.
Love the show guys!
Do you guys plan on digging in to season 2 of Castlevania?
I hated Astyanax on NES bitd but have grown to appreciate it more after getting familiar with the attack bar and it's connection to The Legendary Axe. Same here, never saw this at any arcade, seems like it would be a decent earner. Some decent graphics but yeah that music ain't great.

I didn't know it was an arcade game..... Looks like legendary axe arcade lol
A FUCKING Rastan shirt? That is TOTALLY AWESOME. When are you two gonna play THAT game? Keep up the AMAZING work, Gents. Top 10 Arcade Memories? One of mine is Rastan
the pose at the ending screen looks like the label from castlevania (simon belmont with a axe) :-D
It is called a Cloaca. Cool Arcade PCB how did you get it running?
Ooo, different shirts than the last few videos!
I thought the gameplay and challenge was pretty decent. An above average nes game imo
I have 2 NES games still in my possession. Ninja Gaiden II and Astyanax.
Is that the same sound sample as Strider?
you guys ever think about doing a collab with metaljesus?
MJ really lacks charisma and his 'diverse friends' just make me roll my eyes...
That look on Joe's face when the game ended...
One of the best games on the atgames legends mini
Now i can tell their voice apart, sweet!
Pucker button lol. Only on Game Sack!
I had this for NES. The graphics were a lot more strange.
That was Simon Belmont at the end...
Pretty good looking game. Felt a little unfair when I tried it but that could just be because I suck.
Rastan in the arcade is hard as balls. I don't think I ever got past the 1st level back in the day.
Yeah it's pretty crazy.
What planet are the flames from? Uranus?
so to play PCBs like this what do i need. I have a neo geo MVS, but is this what a supergun is? ahhhhh
Not wanting to complain but Giger is pronounced Gee-ger with a hard G. Great video as always though!
Had no idea that meh NES game of the same name started as an arcade game.
If we DID get invaded by aliens, it'd probably be crappy ones like from Signs. All the cool aliens would just be laughing at us.
The "Aliens" from Sings weren't Aliens. They were demons and the lights in the sky were warrior Angels preparing to send them back to hell.
Its pronounced Astyanax not Astyanax
Gotcha!
AST-eye-AHN-ax. Homeric Greek.
Can you guys please show how to connect a pcb to a crt? As well as how to do the controller set up.
Thanks!
Wow this is just like Legendary Axe but 2 players and more enemies...
I think it's pronounce. Asty An Ax. I know the NES game had a commercial.
Nice screen layout guys, Congrats!! Except for the changes to "full screen mode". Please this causes nausea.
Is it wrong to love playing with sacks?
Sprite work is good
I call this game Nasty Ax.

Thank you. 🌱🌹 Interesting game. 👌😍 But too much time is a short game.😀 🎮 Maximum thirty minutes. 🕛🎮🕧 But it's really nice to play this game even with being short. 😊👍
Please mark it clearly as a let's play and not a regular episode in the title, as you did with previous ones.
