Yeah, Aqualung is one of the best out there doing these retro game reviews. I also like how his videos are simple, straight to the point and solely focused on the games being reviewed, without all the bells and whistles other people sprinkle on their videos to look more "professional".
Don't get me wrong, I am really glad this guy keeps going on and we are all here for him. But damn, we have been watching this guys youtube videos for long enough for it to be considered "nostalgia". It hurts. Always love the vids though.
I really liked this story actually. You got together with the cute chick you shared the adventure with, rather than the princess you didn't even get to properly know.
you know aqua/ken, one thing i like about you is that you dont put on airs, you just sound down to earth and real, like in the days of my childhood when we would talk to our friends about games and other stuff, ive been watching since about 2010 and i think you were the first person i subbed to. I just want to say, not sure why you do the vids, but I appreciate it and enjoy watching
Great video! These walkthroughs are genuinely helpful. Decent game too. It’s a little short and the boss gauntlet at the end is pretty uninspired, but I dig the story tbh. I also respect the experimentation in combat of gauging how much power you should use for each swing of your sword. Like you said, some enemies are fine if you button mash, but others require more patience and precise attacks. It’s a cool give and take system that adds an extra dynamic to compensate for how slow Astyanax walks, as well as being a nice supplement to his limited spells ability. BTW the freeze enemies spell is great for some of the more cluttered platforming sections.
I played this game as a kid, but couldn't finish it because of how boring it was. Glad to see it here- you made it a far more interesting experience. Thanks for showing it.
Always love 8 and 16bit games with anime cutscenes. This version of Astyanax is actually wicked similar to Legendary Axe and Valis 3, plus I've heard the same director worked on all three but I could be wrong. All three have a cooldown period for your main attack and similar level design.
Huh, I never noticed as a kid that this appears to share some parts of its engine with Totally Rad. Maybe. The giant boss scenes look strikingly similar, anyway. And Jaleco's name is on both games...
Picked this game up in like 1990 or something for 10 bucks. It was playable, but the controls did kind of bog it down. Also, the lack of a sound effect when you struck an enemy was extremely annoying. Definitely hurt the game. I never finished it.
Why does your copy of Astyanax move so choppy? My cartridge moves smother than that. I only experience mild slow down when multiple enemies are on the screen at once, and only occasionally.
just like monster party, except its not a fake out :P i think thats why monster party sticks with me more, oh sweet, thats my prize.....oh, oh damn, nooooo......
Have been watching this channel for a few years now. How does this guy not have more subscribers?
Great review, as always.
i have asked my self the same thing

I found out about this channel some time after the first AVGN videos and can say I am happy that he's still going. This feels really nostalgic to me.

Astyanax is such a hidden gem. Surprised that the price is so low.

I agree with you whole-heartedly.
I'm seriously impressed with this game. I either had it or rented it as a kid and remember not playing past first level.
You know when the Tull intro hits, you're like ah shit business is about to pick up
We used to call this game Nastyass when we were kids

This was a favorite game of mine as a kid. I consider it to be criminally underrated.
Very much enjoyed this review! Excellent job as always Aqualung!
Glad you’re still doing videos, still hope to one day get Snakes Revenge!
I was gonna go to bed but then I noticed this.
Same as you.
It already three months.

never played this game when i was younger, but watching it, my first thought was, huh, this is where secret of mana got its attack system from

nice job! this is an underrated game IMO, similar gameplay to legendary axe
AqualungGameReviews You are a Saint. Thanks for another reason to trust you as one of the greats.
Ah! A Nasty Ax. I've heard tales of this game... =)
I like this game, played through it a couple times

That's his actual name? Astyanax?
What did his dad name him after his failed metal band?
It's the name of Hector's son in Greek mythology.
Love your reviews!

Looks like an interesting game.
