- Nostalgia can be a powerful thing. But when it comes to this childhood favorite of mine, I was previously particularly harsh on it. I'm now looking at it with a more open minded perspective. Is Astyanax worth your time? Find out right now!

My favorite thing about Astyanax for NES was the fact that the Princess isn't your love interest, but rather the fairy who follows you everywhere.
And you end up together in the real world, with her no longer fairy-ized.
It was just one of those nice breaks from the classic Princess/hero trope.
Absolutely agreed, it was a fantastic plot twist, and one I didn't see coming.
This game had my favorite soundtrack of NES titles as a kid. Always assumed that the weird looking thing was an Aztec macuahuitl but given the developer it's more likely to be the Seven-Branched Sword mentioned elsewhere
Yeah, same here, one of my favorite OSTs on the NES growing up. Ooh, I've never heard of that sword, I'll have to look it up! :)
I loved this growing up! The character designs really influenced me at the time.
I could be wrong but I think the Cutie character might have been
inspired by the lady wrestler "Cutie Suzuki".
Pesky Angel ooh I've never heard of that possibility but I can see that.
Another great game of my early teens. Still have my boxed copy sitting in front of me. That opening cut-scene theme still gives me chills man. Excellent review Mike. ^>^
maximpact24 yeah the opening cut scene in the game is epic. Thanks for stopping by, dude!
I'm just amazed how well you said the title! Great vid man
Retro Game Players thanks! I actually covered it in the gaming linguistics video I also put out on it. Lots of digging and investigating.
I haven't played this one in AGES! The bosses are rad AF! Awesome video!
Nintenjoe the bosses are so weirdly cool!
Dude great video!
Where can I find the remix of Remlia Castle that can be heard in the end?
Trikarman thanks man! It was actually done by Nickelpunk but they don't have the MP3 anymore, I had to take it from the previous review I did on this game years ago.
been binging all of these episodes. interesting game choices. nice videos man
zak bro yeah I try to have an eclectic mix of games ranging from old to new. Glad you're enjoying them!
The story in this game blew my damn mind. I was not used to such heavy stuff, and the music made it even better.
Right?! I'm still amazed that Astyanax's cutscenes don't get more mention in "the origins of storytelling in video games". It's ALWAYS Ninja Gaiden that gets mentioned...maybe Vice Project Doom...but never Astyanax.
Ha! I just played and reviewed this one last month. It was interesting to see how the magic system clearly inspired the one from Aicom's Totally Rad. Also, this is what that weird weapon upgrade is modeled on: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven-Branched_Sword
Will Mistretta yeah aicom has developed a surprising amount of games! Also, fair point regarding the weapon...but the manual saying its a spear kinda throws a wrench into that theory...unless they really had no idea. Yours makes way more sense.
Dongled I've just noticed over the years that variations on this particular historical artifact find their way into a lot if Japanese games and other media, much like the imperial regalia (AKA the three sacred treasures). It could be that the localization staff either didn't pick up on or didn't bother explaining the reference.
Good to see another DYHPTG. How've you been Mike; wife and kid doing well too? Thanks for taking time to still make vids. I loved the Ric Flair and Keanu joke since I'm a Keanu fan and love pro wrestling. You were into wrestling before?
JustHitRewind wife is doing well and kid is progressing good, too thanks for asking. She'll be born in June! So, I was actually huge into wrestling in high school but stopped following it at the tail end of the attitude era.
Game is a breeze once you figure out the simple mechanics.
Astyanax was my Castlevania for times when I didn't want to play Castlevania
Ace of Base? You had a little sister, too? This video makes me wanna play Astyanax. I've had the game for years, but I think I've only played it when I tried it out to make sure it worked. Great review, man! Heading over to Gaming Linguistics now....
Nefarious Wes pshhh whatchu talkin bout, son?! I was big into their first album! XD
That thing tossing the Andes candies looks like the tree monster from the movie From Hell It Came.
On the Stick this I need to check out.
Skye Reynolds You get me.
On the Stick wait, am I the only one who calls them Andes Mints?!
I don't know, but I've always favored the rhyming "Andes candies."
Well now I want to play Astyanax.....or probably continue my completely unsuccessful quest to beat Legendary Axe...really enjoyed this Mike, probably due to the limited amount of Ghost In a Shell
MichaelBtheGameGenie dude, I hear you on LA, that game is tough! I captured about two hours worth of footage for no reason. I was just having fun playing the game, I didn't want to stop!
Yeah I have been a big fan of Legendary Axe for a while but its hard as balls....maybe ill use the debug code as continues and finally beat it. Have you ever tried Legendary Axe 2? That might be even more up your alley
MichaelBtheGameGenie I haven't played the sequel but I've heard the first is better than the second.
I like Astyanax more than Legendary Axe. The enemies aren't as cheap and it's not a quarter muncher like the arcade games.
Dude, I have played this game! And it's sweet!! I had no idea it was a arcade port? This is a "hidden gem" for sure bc it's always super cheap and everyone thinks that it sucks. I think it has the strangest looking bosses of any game I can recall.
Back in the Day Gamer yeah, this game has remained cheap for years for that very reason. It's more or less a cousin of the arcade game, less than a port.
All this time I thought I was the only one who turned into a video game title when he stared at the sun too long :P. *Giggles like a school girl at the name Thorndog* Good stuff man, I really need to check out your channel more often :).
Thanks, dude! :) Glad you enjoyed it! Thorndog and Blackthorn are so similar..I wonder if that was intentional?
I used to play this all the time at the arcades. Loved the level 1 music, which was just as well as I could never get to level 2.
You played the NES version in arcades?! Was it on like a play choice 10 or something?
Dongled No I played the arcade version. Didn't know there was a NES version. I had a Master System :-)
I feel like this game is in every used game store. Gotta pick it up sometime!
Pragmatik it's well worth it
I remember not liking this game way back but am up for giving it another shot. I really like Legendary Axe which I've played more recently(haven't beat though, it is hard).
LA is a lot of fun. I was capturing footage for this review for it, and I just kept going!
We never got Assty-nasty in sweden. I'm starting to feel like we missed out :(
Might have to watch your earlier video about it again to make me feel better about it :)
I've pulled it and am leaving it unlisted for now. Though I may include it in the link description in the future. I want to give this one a chance to catch up in view count.
Hmm, now I need to re-watch your original episode! Love the on camera jokes as always, Mike. I appreciate they put plot elements into the game. Even if it's... weird! lol, he turns into a video game title screen! Why do they make us hit those item totems twice? Once should be enough! Never heard of The Ground Round. Not sure how I feel about clowns... Anyway, excellent video Mike. I think it's cool you took a second look here. Looks like Jason already thumbs downed your video, lol. I'm off to listen to the soundtrack. Thanks for the tip!
Hard opinions galore up in here. Ground Round was the shizzle.
I being a 39 year old gamer I also got this for my birthday as a kid and it has always stuck with me. But this game seems to be very divisive some love it some hate it.
I just realized my childhood was a lie I was calling it astranax. Even just now I can't stopp. Noooo. I was raised off astranax and fried bologne, please forgive me
spliff starr it's all good :)
This game, without a doubt, had THE best soundtrack out every other NES game, ever. And it's not even close. Ducktales, SMB3, Paperboy, I don't care.
BTW, they always said juh-LEE-co in the commercials.
I do like this game! It's not awful.
I always struggle with pronouncing this game's title lol. Great review :D
Hope you watched the followup on Gaming Linguistics where I show how to do just that! :) Thanks for watching!
I have it queued up to watch next :D
Well if it's supposed to be a "spear" looks like the broken off shaft of a halbeard l. At least it's ribbed for her pleasure.
LuciousShowcase lol so it is! Kinky.
I got this when I was like 7, to this day I've never been able to finish it... too hard for me, :c
Yeah it's a tough game for sure.
This game is great!
Kinda feel sorry for the sentient ledge at 2:14. Not much of a life.
It's a living.
Astyanax was fucking awesome
Hell yes it was!
Astyanax, Astyanax, he wears a skirt and uses a sword or axe. Look out! Here comes Astyanax.
Theres the woo i was waitin for lol
LuciousShowcase that's what's up.
About time miketendo!!!! Love d.y.h.p.t.g
You may have missed the previous episode. I know I had a big break in between the Mega Man Unlimited video but check out the Battle Chasers Review as well! (it's at the end of this video) :)
This is demon souls in it's early days 😆
Do you think that 6 years from now you’ll make a review of this game again and it’ll be pretty negative? And then every 6 years you’ll just change your mind again?
AliensAreNoobs haha good question. On twitter, we were saying how it'll be like Star Wars and I'll George Lucas the whole thing and make everything CGI.
I thighs it was pronounced "as-tee-an-ax"
Check out the gaming Linguistics episode. I break it down there :)
I was proud of being a Jehovah's witness and played this game 😅 until one day i showed it off to the bible study teacher, then later told my mom than later made me lose my faith 😂.
Wow. You look really cute in drag 😍
