  • In this episode of "Is It Fun?" I give my opinions on Jaleco's Astyanax for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This is my first attempt at editing using new hardware (Macbook Pro) and software (Adobe Elements Premiere 10) and new microphone (Snowball Blue) so if you notice anything sub par... that's probably why. I'm still working out the kinks.

Wow... the ending had you in tears... that's awesome. Very rarely will a game move me, but when it does that game becomes special to me. Thanks for sharing and I'm glad you're enjoying my channel.

Thank you so much! It's so good to know people are enjoying the videos. Sometimes when I'm editing for the 3rd hour the video starts to feel like a boring piece of crap, but then I post it and people say the kindest things. Thanks again, MorbidSnail. I love the name by the way... how'd you come up with it?

A lot of retro game reviewers on YT, but I like you style for doing reviews. It's concise with videos under 6 mins, and you give the viewer the info straight with no attempts to be cute or funny. Thanks

This is probably the #1 game from my childhood, so most of my experience with the game is nostalgic. Beating this game for the first time made me feel on top of the world. It was incredibly hard, but after playing the game non-stop for a long time, I managed to beat it. The music still sounds extraordinary today.

  • @petercharleskrug

4:32 I'm afraid I must disagree with you on one thing: I think the cutscenes were awesome and one of the best parts about the game. I enjoyed following the story and seeing what happened next in between levels. I never tried skipping past them, but if the game didn't let you then I guess I can understand why that could be a deal-breaker for some.

No problem man, good video reviews! Well, basically Pinball Quest was a short rpg pinball game. Kind of shaped the idea for Sonic Spinball. Then you also had 3 other tables to play on besides the Rpg mode. It's my favorite pinball game to this day. Very innovative for it's time.

My family has always pronounced the title “Ass-Tee-Anne-Icks”. I thought it rolled off the tongue nicely.
Awesome game too, beat it again a couple days ago and had a great time and I was amazed by the graphics, the art style, and music, with the unique mechanics being the cherry on top. I also liked that when you get hit, you only get knocked back a tiny bit.

Recently re stumbled upon this and remembered how much fun I had with it in my youth. I really enjoyed the cut scenes even if the story is campy but that is nothing really new to a fantasy game. It was really ahead of its time for an NES game.

I just bought this game a year ago, and it became an instant favorite. I love this game. It kinda suffers from the Ninja Gaiden thing, as in enemies respawn if you go to far back, the character moves like a tank, and his weapon attack range is garbage. However, for some reason, these don't seem like flaws when playing. The game is overall fun and rewarding every time I pop it in the NES.

first video I've seen from ya and I'm already liking it. This game as a kid was a game that I had to cheat to beat (Nintendo Power FTW) but aside from that I loved it and looking back on it I wish I had played it straight up.
Only thing I disagree on is the comment on the cutscenes. Yes they are a little on the long side but at the same time they progress the story well enough to the point at the end where I can say the ending nearly had me in tears.
    have a good night

i was just playing this. good game. nice graphics. very detailed for nes and with decent animation. sound effects aren't too great but i do enjoy the music. controls are kinda good but jumping tends to feel a bit stiff. also, no password or save feature sucks. but you can continue on the same stage as long as you don't reset. overall a pretty decent game.

  • @NESComplex
    @NESComplex  11 лет назад

Sweet. I find that most retro games are challenging, but I think it has to do with modern games allowing us to carelessly run and gun through levels. When we go back and play something retro, we're just not used to being careful.

I discovered a code for this game I've yet to see presented anywhere. It's a cinema scene select, and what happened is I decided to try pressing buttons on the title screen to find a code. Defying the odds, I did but had no idea what the button combination was and never could replicate it. It may not be an important code but it exists and I've never seen it presented anywhere.

yeah man it was one of the first games to move me as a gamer and I think one of the only other times that happened was when I beat Mother 2 (Earthbound for the SNES) because it was one of the only games for the system I beat ever and it was like my first JRPG. Actraiser is another one just about every time I beat the final boss.
But back to the original point: This game was one that, while I never owned, I loved playing it as a kid and I'm glad to see it got a good review from ya
