What do you think of Golgo 13? Am I crazy? Or is it really that bad?
Is the rest of the world missing something about this beloved character from Japan?
How would this game work on modern consoles? Might it be good?
Share, like, comment, subscribe… I appreciate it greatly! -Complex
i have been waiting for a MUCH MUCH better remake of this game (i started to type MOVIE, because that's how i see this game being, and it was wayyy before it's time) on a newer console. I think Togo or whatever his name is, is a character in some other games over the years (could be mistaken), but a straight up re-do of this game on like a PS4 or even the PS3 a few years back... it would be so dope, especially with all the awesome cut scenes, enhanced "adult" themes, more violence, and better storytelling that makes it feel like a movie experience that you join in on... think maybe the Japanese, Max Payne, but more sophisticated, a la James Bond
NESComplex Well it's Patt the NES punks favorite NES game
I honestly love this game. I played it a lot as a kid, and played through it again maybe eight years ago. It is one of my favorites. It's funny you call it out, because I actually really like the music. The main theme is one of my all-time favorite video game tracks, and I can whistle the whole thing right now.
It definitely has its rough edges. I'll admit that completely. The graphics could be better, and most of the different game modes do feel clunky, except for the first-person shooting sections which, I agree, are a bit too easy.
But this game has so much style and ambition! That's what I love about it. Few other NES game try to tell a story the way this one does.
Most games of this era, the storyline was in the manual and that was it. If there was plot development during the game, it was mostly "You finished this level! You are not a little closer to the final bad guy!" "Yep, you beat another level. You're a little closer now. And it's an ice stage!"
In this game, something new happens every time you complete a segment. You're generally told where you're going and why you're going there. Then, you get there, and something else surprising happens to drive the plot along.
I mean, I guess that does make it dated by todays standards. It's weak at what the NES was best at, and it's best at what other, later systems have done much better. Maybe I wouldn't like it as much if I hadn't read about it in a cast off video game guide and become enchanted with the idea, then ordered it from Funcoland out of the back of a magazine with a bunch of friends to split shipping costs. But I can't separate myself from that. I wanted to play this game for a year before I actually got it, and I wasn't disappointed.
limewater u are 100% spot on Bout the story and such. The only other game I can think of from NES off the top of my head that told such an intricate and compelling story IN-GAME, is the original Metal Gear... and we all know how awesome that game was and where it is in gaming today.. but I just couldn't get into the gameplay, no matter how much I wanted to, or tried... maybe I'll give it a go again...
Very well said! You make some great points. I definitely appreciate the ambition behind it and the maze sections especially are ahead of their time. As you pointed out though, you have a soft nostalgic spot for it. I have those too. I always had fun with Spy vs. Spy with my brother, but i can understand why people don't like it. I suppose it's the whole to each their own thing.
This was actually one of my favorite NES games. I was shocked once I found out about the manga and anime which made me love the game even more. I honestly wish they would make a modern version for this series.
I can’t fault you... we all have different tastes and I know some of my favorites aren’t considered that great. I hear you though a modern remake would be AWESOME!
Mine too. This then Ninja Gaiden. There wasn't anything on NES like this game. I finished it as a 14 year old back in the 80s and it felt so rewarding.
I mean, GD, he murders a man trying to who is in the process of committing suicide just to steal back the satisfaction of having killed him. It's badass and principled.
It was an awesome game when it came out, and that is when I played it. If you look at it today, it might not be impressive because we've seen first person shooting modes, spy genre games, more complex plots, etc, but when it came out it was so cool and different and there was a good story. I still like the music of the game as well. For its time, being able to play a side scroll mode, swim in water, have first person modes, fly planes and do some sniping was awesome for a NES game.
I actually have fond memories of this game! I remember my mom buying this game for me from Toys R Us. I picked it solely because of the cover, with the manga style character (Duke Togo) proudly displayed and the promise of a "Top Secret Episode" within. It was incredibly difficult with some crazy end boss (fighting with the NES in that first person mode was a challenge). I beat this game when I was 16. It now seems like it would be impossible to do, but there was no internet back then so I had a lot of time on my hands, we didn't have as many distractions as we all do now. Once you bought a game, you were committed to completing it as they weren't cheap.
Absolutely! When you got a game you played it to death and you loved it and those amazing memories make those games... the BEST games. Awesome comment. Thanks
Looks like I know what game I am playing tonight! 😂
Thanks for letting us pitch the game ✅
Standing ovation. Bravo!!!! This was so well done, dude. The cameo by PGS was the cherry on top. Love this channel so much - keep up the great work NESComplex!
Thank you so much Jeff! Woo hoo PGS in the house
Smash JT told ya so, just saying.
NES ADDICT haha you were so right Jay!
Cool video! I was always fascinated with this game. Its content seemed so mature and ahead of its time. The gameplay was mostly frustrating though and i could never stick it out long enough to beat it. Maybe someday. I have to give it credit for being different and overall i think its a good game, just a victim of its over ambitious nature.
I totally agree with you... it could have been great and there really is nothing else like it. The ambition was through the roof, but there isn't a single aspect that totally lands for me
This was/is my favorite NES game. I still play through it every couple of years.
I love this game, it felt like a spy thriller.
This is the funniest review 😂 Chris's antics crack me up. However, understandably so regarding this game.
Ya that game is pretty bad. I know some people like it. I just don’t get it 🤷🏻♂️
Even with the voice modifier you can still tell its Vintage. He has such a unique way of speaking
Seem to recall these reviews used to be puff pieces. But now NESComplex is back and he's not taking any crap.
Lol. I took the butt of a pistol to the base of my skull.
When the game came out back in '88 I was enthralled by it. And while most people say it's ridiculously hard, I managed to beat it over a single weekend rental (drawing all those maps was a major pain tho). A few years later I learned about the character's origins (one of the longest running manga of all time) and appreciated this game even more. It looked and sounded so different from anything I'd ever played on the NES, even with all the censorship (partial nudity and the resurrection of the Nazi regime being removed from the american release). My conclusion: This game is fun, and even better if you know what you are doing. I ocassionally give it a try from time to time, via emulation. :D
That Lost joke was brilliant. Great video as always, good sir. I love this series.
Thanks! I was on a huge Lost kick back then in 2013
ha ha ha you deserve an oscar for this episode and an instant pass to paradise for having the patience of a saint
I was hoping for a grammy for my rendition of "Dungeon Prisoner Sings Nobody Knows the Trouble".... lol. Thank you! It took forever to grow out my hair
I played this game when I was in 6th grade. I had no issues following the plot. I had no issues completing the game, and I wasn't exactly a a phenom. It was challenging without being impossible. At the time I felt like the variety was interesting to my little ADD brain, the story was interesting, and the game had a cinematic quality to it. Loved the music. Loved the gameplay. Dunno, thought it was great.
"You can jump kick by pressing both buttons but you look like an idiot."😂😂😂😂😂😂 Cracks me up every time. Great video!
Lol! Thank you
You have to admit that scoped out snipe of a headshot kill was pretty friggin awesome
That game was the shit!! Back in 89. I fell in love with this game! Was really advanced for it's time.
52 lives!!
I remember playing this game for hours on end. Going to the library to look up what KGB was.
Proud to say I beat this game back in the day on my second to last continue.
I loved it. Not perfect but good variety, great adult story, and it was ahead of its time.
I can’t disagree with you there! I love the ambition and the story isn’t terrible just hard to keep track of
nice Back to the Future II reference there at the end, with the KO...i caught that!
Good ear dude!
well it's EASYYY for me ;-)
I never thumbs down people’s hard work 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 good job man keep me coming please!!
Thank you! Your comment made me laugh... lol... the letter order of the "e" and the "m" are very important.... jk jk Thank you Ira! I really do appreciate the support and kind words
I remember getting a mild kick out of this game back in the day, but I was never able to make it too far. Looking at it now, yeah, I can see it's probably not that great to go through. At least the title theme is still catchy, haha.
It has some decent moments for sure and I think at the time it would’ve been pretty special but today... I didn’t enjoy it very much
Another awesome video.... even reviewing the crappy games is fun to watch!!! 👍👌
I try... some are fun and some are not, but hopefully the videos are always fun
I liked this game quite a bit. It is too damn long for no passwords and the plot is waaaay to complicated, but I enjoyed it alot. The button flipping thing only works if you imagine that the B shoot A jump was the universal standard at the time, which it was not. The mazes totally suck though, but the book gave you a maps. Also the music was pretty sweet, especially the main theme.
chris' channel is so underrated...
it should have at least a minimum of a million subs!
when people ask what channels they like, (for instance on cinemassacre), he's the first one i bring up..
Thank you so much! I really really appreciate that! I put in a lot of effort... it's very encouraging to know it's appreciated
Loved this game. I could run through it in one sitting without dying, I even had the mazes memorized where I was out in a minute. Did this have Nintendo seal of approval? Surprised it got through in the US with the cigarette smoking and implied sex.
And the bloody head shot of the guy in the tower
Glad you are back making video again! I hope you are enjoying it
you have to admit that the intro song is an irrefutable banger. seriously, EPIC.
...yeah but in 1988, when I played this, it was awesome!!! First game I had played that had multi-genre gaming and that level of graphic play. It was amazing. I beat it in a weekend so it seems 51 continues is enough. You could pause, have a meal and go back to it. We didn't know any better. Judging it with a modern perspective is almost unfair. You have to imagine plying a game like this in 1988 when the best graphics on NES were Faxanadu.
Its Thursday...... my mind is blown and night is made!
Woo hoo! Thank you!
4:36 This guy's mind was blown too :P
i loved this game when i was a kid
They just threw everything they could possibly throw into that game. I asked the same questions you asked when I played this...why!? Great video!
It really is such a hodgepodge. It could have been great
I actually like the game but I like that you put another video out more. Great job.
Thank you Joseph
I love this game but I could never beat it. Thanks for the video!
This game was amazing in 1989
yea it really was, esp. the sniper levels.
When I was 6, my 14-year-old brother rented this game.
I tried to play it, and was told not to… but not before I jump-kicked a bullet, which my brother didn’t know you could do.
I don’t think he beat it, either.
I appreciate them trying to blend and array of different genres. I think a more accomplished developer could have produced a better final product.
You said it perfectly Jeremy
This was such a rad video!😂😂🤘🏿❤
Great video, good fun👍
Thanks Jamie! I appreciate it!!!
Dude I am cracking up listening to this. Sorry to see that you're not posting anymore, but glad that there are tons of videos here though.
I still post
Videos take me a long time
I don't even know why I got this game, but I did end up loving it in a weird way. It's very hard, the controls are weird but consistent. It took me quite a while to figure out what the story was, and I would love to go through and edit the dialogue to make things a little clearer. The gameplay is very frustrating at the end when you start going back episodes after dying. Over the course of a day or two, a friend and I (pausing the game to sleep and eat), go to the last fight, died, and quit after going back a stage. It was just too much for chil'ren to bear! I didn't end up being it until I had it on an emulator (and I STILL died in the final fight the first time I got there). So, yeah, I get how someone might not like it and that it can be frustrating especially right away because of just how... um... unique the controls are. The story is actually kind of fun, but it is pretty hard to to understand the weird localization (It took me YEARS to finally figure out what "it wouldn't do to have the sniper on the ground" meant).
HOWEVER! I will not stand for your besmirching the music in this game! The example you play has an alarm going off inside a base, so that was a pretty bad-faith example :) The theme is amazing (and when it kicks in after getting the M-16 it's truly dope... but then M-16 does nothing... not dope), the music in East Berlin is perfect, the crazy music in the base and in that scene in Greece... it has good music, damn it!
I know this is an old review, but I was just thinking about this game and was looking to see if anyone else liked it. We seem to be few and far between. :D
My cousin had this game and I remember it being a pain in the ass..yet I always went back for more..kinda how a Greyhound to Cali. suuuux! But I'd still do it again 😏
I'm currently wearing the same shirt as the kidnapper. That doesn't bode well.
Cool fun video, never played that game, I only seen Pat's video about it. The only Top Secret we got in Germany was the Top Secret Game Guide ;-) this was too violent at that time, I mean Contra was changed to Probotector and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had to be the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, that game never could be changed into something friendly :-D
Hey Tommie! It’s crazy how censored it was... I know he loves the game. A lot of people do, but I suspect it’s nostalgia talking because as a gamer playing it for the first time it’s difficult to get through.
NESComplex Yes, I can imagine that, it really does not look easy
Thank you for make me remember this gorgeous game ,that was my first time sniping bad guys ,i really love it no joking jajaj
And the anime movie is awesome.
Great vid !
I had this game when I was a kid and traded it for Battle of Olympus.
Here from pixel game squad
Thank you! You'll be seeing a ton of overlap with our channels. We're good friends and we love to collaborate
Just cane from the live stream u guys always kill it👉👍
Lol... good times! I was listening and making lunch
I see. Well, I will give it a try.
Nice review man, but I gotta admit this game is a guilty pleasure for me in spite of the flaws.
Haha! We all have them. So many factors... nostalgia, gameplay tastes, etc
I enjoyed this game back in the day
Do you still enjoy it?
NESComplex well not like i did then. For nostalgia is all. Its kind of a crappy game lol
Just subscribed and really enjoy your vids! Just an FYI lol...octopodes is the plural of octopus.
Thank you! Glad you found the channel! Wow! I never knew that! Thanks for the heads up
“Is it fun?”
My question before watching a NES Complex video ; it’s always answered with a resounding “yes!”
THANK YOU! Wooo hoo. That means a lot... too bad the games was lack luster
Ur the perfect person to review CAPCOM TROJAN Arcade or nes !
Gabbo! Perhaps I will... T is coming up
The composer who made the horrible music is named Michiharu Hasuya. He also did the music for rygar.
I actually like the opening theme and i like Rygar's music too... interesting
Love your channel.
Thank you! Means the world to me!
I’m glad you’ve been back keep up the great work
Yee haw! I’m having too much fun here!
Vintage VG Geek for president!
Oh LORD NOOOOOOOOOO! That would be the worst
vintagevideogamegeek I will not! ...or did you mean the other Chris?
I always see this game in the pawn shop cheap , great video !!
Now you know why. lol
Back in the day I thought this game was intriguing and original. Maybe it hasn't aged very well. Still - I like the art design and music!
It has some great moments for sure. Maybe my opinion has to do with playing it for the first time all these years later. The opening song is great and the story has some good moments
There's something very vintage about that disembodied voice... can't quite put my toenail on it... but it's vintage-y. Oh and be wary of any rogue Pat the NES Punks. Rumor has it Pat has an unhealthy obsession with Golgo-13, and he's been oiling up and hitting the gym.
Gonna have to play this..thx your vids are awesome
You sure you want to do that?
Looks fun but well see...lol
My friend and I loved it years ago, but we had a lot of problems trying to finish it.
Next episode you must follow up with Mafat Conspiracy and Secret Ties ;) Nice video
Noooooooo. I can’t play that one tooooo! Yikes! The next video will be a fun one though
I've been waiting just waiting to watch this! Let's go!
Yay!! Sup dude!
NESComplex you know who claims this as their favorite game right? ;)
NESComplex just hanging out man! Hope your awesome!!
creative man!
Thanks Zach
Certainly my teacher of Nostalgia games!Relationships float and sink bro we're still young don't get it twisted or act like it you'll regret it at the end.
DON'T PRACTICE GETTING OLD!YOUR NOT.IM 39 MY BROTHER IS 44 AND I KEEP REMINDING HIM.BESIDES BILLS WHERE TOYS R US KIDS LOL!
DON'T sleep on Kb toys they had the best mags
I feel that Golgo 13 is more of a 5 or 6 out of 10 game at best. I really don't think it's a below-average game. I felt there was much more fun here than NES games like Rocky and Bullwinkle, X-Men, and Ghostbusters. It's one of those games that I could definitely see have a fanbase of its own behind it like with The Adventures of Bayou Billy, in that if you're willing to patiently willing to put with enough, then it's possible to get some fun out of it.
As i didn't have a strong nostalgic connection to it I find it difficult to enjoy... but of course i am exaggerating a bit too
I also wanted to love this game... but I couldn’t play it past the first stage. 🤢🤮 I’m glad to say your video was once again top notch! 😄
Thanks Martin! I played it for you guys! My son was so annoyed with the sound it was making as I captured the footage. Lol
I tried to enjoy this game, but sadly no. Great job on this video!
It was a near miss. Could’ve been great!
Wait..riff's father worked for victokai and mikey's dad worked for Nintendo. Time to exist
That family resemblance is striking! And you sir are the comment king!!! You legit make me laugh 😂
Pure...awesomeness....
Mega Duck! Thanks! Did you ever see the Mega Nan X episode! I kept looking for your comment! I thought you’d love that one you MegamanNutt
Another classic vid, made my day
Thank you Brian!!!
Oh, by the way. If you ever have time ,I would love to hear your take on the immortal. I think it was on snes though. I loved that game even though I got stuck on one of the later levels. Wish I could have seen the ending. Either way keep doing what you do man.👍
Thank you Greg! I’m going through in a semi alphabetical order but “I” is already marked out for something else :-( It’ll be a fun video though. That wig and beard would’ve been great for the Immortal though. Lol
The Immortal was boss, and hard af 😤
My man, Renée.
Good eye! I wonder how many people knew who that was
The reason for 52 continues (aka telecasts) is because that is how many weeks there are in a year and the game is trying to pretend it is an anime that runs weekly. Basically you get a years worth of episodes to tell this “seasons” story.
That makes perfect sense!
I was so bummed out when I rented this as a kid.
I know, so much promise and the marketing made it look interesting, but i'm not a fan at all
even with voice changer...thats gotta be vintage.
edit. he has a gun!
Yes thankfully not loaded
Summer 88 a buddy traded it to me. It was the different perspectives that the game flipped me through 2D FPS mazes. I liked it
It's an interesting (even fun) game with some gameplay flaws. You could do a lot worse. It's definitely worth the typical $5 price tag.
There's another NES Golgo 13 game called the Mafat Conspiracy.. occasionally better but the maze levels will cause permanent brain damage
Bwahahaha! If they are ANYTHING like the mazes in this one I’d rather die a thousand deaths than play it
I just picked this game up CIB for only $30 on ebay two weeks ago!
Not a bad get!
lol great video as always!
Thank you!
RICCKKKYYYYYYYY!
He’s going to be in the next one for sure
Top Secret Episode is great 🎮😀👍🏻
Never knew the name of this game, me and my sis would play it... Not knowing what to do at all (5-6) years old
2:22 IS THAT BRUCE LEE
Ha ha, you're a lot less tolerant towards this one than I am. You're not wrong, though.
I’m not gonna lie... it was really difficult to play. It’s no Duck Tales. 😂
Best game in Nes history
Yes you are crazy. And yes the game looks bad. lol! Jokes aside, the 3D maze reminds me of The Lone Ranger but I feel it was far better executed there. Maybe a game to put on your backlog for this series of Is It Fun? :)
Hahahaha. I’ve never tried the Lone Ranger. Sounds like I’m not missing much
It's actually a very interesting game. In towns it is played from a topdown perspective, in gang hangouts it is played as a sidescrolling platformer and in caves it is played in the first person maze view, which has some arcade style shooting (zapper support!). It even has minigames where you have to shoot falling bottles before they hit the ground. I loved the game as a kid. But maybe I'm crazy as well ;-)
Awesome.
Thank you!
I know this game was heavily censored when it came stateside. I wonder if there is patch available for it.
Interesting! It wouldn’t surprise me
hard game but fun too
Haven't played this one yet maybe cuz I never heard about Golgo 13 haha sigaretes give you life :-O
Yeah... not the best game... you’re not missing out
Aaron Stapish!!!!
I was told very recently that this game is great.. a hidden gem, even.. so I picked it up and it's sitting in my collection.. it may be sitting there for a while.....
Well... who knows? I guess we all have our differences
You're missing out
This was great. I had a good laugh
Awesome! Exactly what I’m aiming for
indeed it was.
I remember playing this game and immediately said 'why?!'
Love this.
Armandooooooooo! Sup my dude! Thanks for stopping by
