Duane was a mere 24 years old when the accident occurred near Macon, Georgia, during a period when the band were between touring and recording commitments.
Allman was riding his Harley after a party in Macon, Ga.
A witness reported that Mr. Allman's cycle ran into the rear of a truck that was making a right turn ahead of him.
While trying to swerve to avoid striking a truck in an intersection his Harley Sportster struck the back of the truck and he flew from his bike which landed on and skidded with him.
Three hours later, Allman was pronounced dead from internal injuries.

This is completely wrong. Duane was speeding down Hillcrest Ave in Macon, GA. As he approached Bartlett Ave, a truck carrying a boom crane was coming from the opposite direction making a left turn when Duane came upon it. The truck may or may not have stopped in the middle of the turn, but probably slowed considerably, blocking Duane's path. Duane could have either laid his Harley down or tried to veer around the truck to his left. It was a split second decision. It appears he tried to veer around it but either struck the truck (but most likely not) or lost control of his bike and went down.
The bike bounced, came down on Duane's chest and then slid another 90 feet before coming to a stop against the curb. Duane was wearing a helmet but had cut the straps off so it probably came off as soon as he fell. He sustained severe internal injuries including a crush aorta and liver but was still alive. He was apparently revived 2 or 3 times in the ambulance to the hospital when he stopped breathing but eventually died three hours after the accident while in surgery.
This is from testimony by Candace Oakley (Berry's sister) and Dixie Meadows (Duane's girlfrriend) who were following Duane a ways back. Also from the truck driver, Chuck Wertz, and the police report.

I heard in an interview with Gregg years back that Duane lived every aspect of his short life full out. As a bike rider I'll say with a fair amount of certainty that Duane was probably ridiing his Sporty recklessly when he wrecked it. What a shame! I can't imagine the success the band would have enjoyed with him & Berry.

This is not what happened. The truck turned in front of him. Unfortunately there was a hill between Duane and the intersection where the truck turned. Duane was unable to see the truck in time to miss it. He swerved left but the bike clipped the back of the truck and flipped. It landed on Duane and he was crushed under it during that and the following skid.

Not how it happened. Also, he was sober heading to a birthday party, not coming from one. Butch and Greg have both told the story in interviews, this is crap.

This recreation is not even remotely accurate the truck was no where near that big and the bike bounced and landed on top of Duane skidding along with him underneath

Why would the truck driver have to pay compensation when it was Allmans fault.
Because this video is wrong.
Most likely the semi could not make the turn right due to oncoming traffic from the right and stopped turning. Possibly even backing up slightly to make sure the trailer would not go over the edge of the right corner of the intersection.
In many cases while a semi is wide turning right oncoming traffic from the right will block part of the turning radius needed.
Or this truck was not zoned for this residential road due to its weight.

Duane Allman was also involved with the famous super group "Derek and the Dominoes" with Eric Clapton in 1970, so he didn't just have success with his own band! The popular song, "Layla" has his slide guitar playing in it, especially during the piano solo at the end.

This isn’t true at all. The truck was coming the other direction and turning left. It stopped in the middle of the intersection and Duane clipped it.

@jeffspicolli593 someone tried that (or sìmilar) with me the other day. Just to intimidate, threaten I think. Huge forklift looking yellow monster pulled out from sidestreet to my right, and turned left into lane going other direction, so towards me. At manical speed.... 🙄🙏
Why did the driver have to pay anything? As much as i love allman brothers music he was at fault. It happened they should of just left it alone
