That's some great animation. Been waiting for someone to replicate the accident. The Porsche was finished in natural brushed aluminum. The Ford was a 1950 black and white two door sedan. The ambulance carrying James had another car accident on the way to the hospital. There were no wind powered generators at that time.
It probably wasn't even planned. They probably just paved over an already existing old dirt trail. A lot of roads in this country came into being that way. For example, I went to the old Antietam battlefield in Maryland and had an old Civil War map, and all the modern roads in the area were on the Civil War map, in the same places. They were originally just dirt trails and when it came to making modern roads they just paved over what was already there.
1955 and I would not call it designed. Current configuration has a very large grass island separating the intersecting road's two lanes so Turnipseed left turn can not be made at speed now that it could have easily made in 1955.
This is the real cause of the crash. It’s insane that they put a left turn crossing over a highway like that. The planner didn’t even have the decency to put a stop for the left turn. Imagine designing a highway where one section can legally swerve in front of the other. Road designer and his supervisor should be in prison. That intersection was known as death alley for that obvious reason
A very interesting reconstruction. As I understand it, there was nothing in front of Turnupseed that would have prevented his seeing the oncoming Porsche as he made his turn; he misjudged the speed the Porsche was travelling at, as police estimates of the speed pegged it as significantly higher than the posted limit. The earlier ticket might also have prompted Dean to try to make up for the lost time that ticket cost him, hence an even higher speed than he was doing previously. The mechanic was expelled from the Porsche on impact and was found on the road. Dean was thrown to the passenger side of the car, feet caught under the pedals and head over the passenger door. The car Turnupseed was driving was almost double the weight of the Porsche, and it has long been speculated that had Dean moved left instead of right he would likely have avoided the collision. Great reconstruction though - the intersection was modified several years later, so it no longer looks like it did when the crash occurred.
Also, the porshe was half the size of those 1950's cars, so it would have appeared to be further away than it actually was, even had Turnipseed seen it. But I believe Turnipseed when he says he did not see it.

Also... The accident scene was reconfigured some years later... For safety. A bit late, as there had been previous crashes prior to Dean's untimely passing.
the cop was doing his part to keep the roadway safe, Dean chose to not listen to one of life's little signs. interestingly some of the last footage recorded of him was for a public safety commercial which he starred in as an humble role model, advising no matter how good of a driver you are to not speed on the highway... speed kills... something along those lines. It’s all wrong. Dean was going west bound 466(46) the other car was going east 466(46) to North 41. Why is there a sign stating welcome to Nevada??? The accident happened in the Central Coast/central California area. All wrong
@@fredericklmeade2947 What I was referring to is that the turn is still there in relatively the same place and although he had the cars going in the wrong direction in the narration the video shows them approaching the intersection from the correct direction. The highway was actually to the right of where it is today if you are headed east, about where the fence line is today. If you look at google earth you can see the old highway bed. Part of the road still exists.
1. Why would 'Welcome to NV' be on a sign going west in CA? West is the ocean. NV is east. 2. Rolf was thrown out of the car towards the driver side. Dean was slumped over the passenger seat with a foot stuck in the pedals. This is part of the controversy of who was actually driving. 3. The student was totally at fault for the crash, even per one of two police investigators. He turned in front of Dean. Its irrelevant that a silver car with no roof would be hard to see. Dean had right of way. Yet he got of free and clear thanks to the jury of fellow locals. 4. Dean's recent speeding and glamorous image, surely played against him as these rurals blamed him in a way. Thats life I guess. Only gone tomorrow, and here today.
Excellent animation , explains just how the 2 cars hit , sun was setting the sun light got in james eyes , he just couldn’t see the sedan coming to make that left turn right in front of Dean. You left us only 3 films wish with all my heart you could have done more❤️love you Jimmy.
I don’t understand how they blamed Dean. When it’s clear someone turned in front of him too soon. Usually it’s not hard to judge if you can make a turn.
Dean was speeding and the other driver wasn't expecting Dean's car to be coming at him at such a high speed. Speed kills and the accident was Dean's fault.
Rolf was thrown out and landed next to the car.dean was tossed to the passenger side with his foot trapped under the pedals and his head dangled over the passenger door drenching it in dripped blood from his facial wounds.
I make that turn that the other car in the accident made once a week at my job. Intersection still to this day works the same way though the roads have been widened
@@redkos It still works the same way. They added turn lanes and realigned the 41 merge by splitting the right and left turn. The old area between those two new sections is where Dean was hit. But there's still a bunch of accidents there because you still turn across 46
@@331Grabber that is pretty much accurate, however it doesn't, "work the same way" as the angle to merge is different & safer than it was in Dean's day. I do agree with the rest of your response, though.
@@redkos Yeah. Fair enough. It was modified to make it safer. Though it still is a high accident interchange. I drive through it once a week and new pieces of cars are strewn about the shoulder pretty often. I think there are plans to change it again to something where traffic doesn't cross paths.
@bauerj3398 ". He initially reported that he had no memory of the accident, or even most of the day of the accident. The sketch, however, indicates that he must have recovered some memory." A quote from a quora article on the accident. He would later draw a sketch assisting investigators in piecing together what happened. And he was quoted as saying, those were James Dean's final words.
Then you know the sun was in the other fellow's face and he said he didn't see the Porsche? Dean's passenger commented about the other car and Dean supposedly said "He has to see us.". Maybe if Dean had slowed out of caution, it would not have happened but when your number is up, it's up.
This simulation has quite a few inaccuracies. Dean's passenger was thrown from the car during the crash. There were no windmills in that area, and certainly no, "Welcome to Nevada" signs as the crash happened in the middle of California.
Thank you. I used to live in Paso Robles and that welcome to Nevada sign makes no sense whatsoever. Why on earth would the video creator put something so obviously inaccurate in a video attempting to tell a true story? Very sloppy
Nice simulation! It gives a great perspective. It appears that if Dean would have cranked the steering wheel to the left they might not have collided. He drove his car right into the path of the turning car.
Hard to say if accurate or not just due to the fact there are so many who want to say this or that way over the years ,however still have to appreciate the work and time used to do it. It has become bit of silly pet peeve of mine on where his car came to rest because lot of people get it wrong. I’ve passed that spot many a times and obviously not a expert but can get more of a feel of the layout in person. One of these days I’ll record it myself 👍
If I remember correctly they realigned that road so the intersection isn't exactly where it was during the crash. I visited the area in 2005 but never found the spot at the fence. I wish I had a better cell phone at the time 😭
The town is pronounced "Cho-lame." Turnipseed was traveling east on Hwy 466 and was planning on turning left onto Hwy 41 at the intersection when he collided with Dean's car. In effect, he turned left and right into the path of Dean's oncoming Porsche traveling west on 466 (now Hwy 46). The light aluminum Porsche was no match for the heavy 1950 Ford Tudor, and it flipped several times, the impact breaking James Dean's neck, which was the primary cause of his death. By the time his friend Bill Hickman and 'Look' Magazine photographer Sanford Roth arrived on the scene driving Dean's Ford station wagon pulling the empty trailer, it was too late. When asked at the subsequent inquest why he had turned and not waited, Donald Turnipseed stated that "I didn't see him."
Dean turned directly into the crash. Had he turned left the crash would have been avoided. As a life long car racer, this avoidance technique should have been understood. This fact has always bugged me.
No. Check the skid marks. & The documentary I site above. The theory you reference has been promoted by George Barris.! Turnipseed turned into him. Dean hit the brakes momentarily... & That was it!
@@CRASHSimulation re: Le Mans - watching 80+ people die in a recreation is quite a bit over the top. there is no need to recreate it - there are hours of clear actual film available on the net for the curious
Turnupseed was turning OFF 466 and ONTO 41,not the other way round as you have it. Wutherich was thrown from the car, and didn't remain in it as you have it. Turnupseed's car was sent sliding back along 466, where it then rolled backwards and ended up blocking the East bound lane, not sitting across route 41.Read Lee Raskin's book 'James Dean: On The Road To Salinas'
Y el motor no pudo quedar botando vapor por adelante, primero porque el motor del Spider no va adelante,va atrás ;y segundo el motor del Spider no es refrigerado por agua,es refrigerado por aire .
Also, the terrain is all wrong. Dean got his ticket just north of Mettler by a California Highway Patrol. Freeways did not exist in the Central Valley in 1955. What about the Welcome to Nevada sign? The accident happened nowhere near Nevada!
So sad to think that James Dean was so young and talented and had worked so hard to get to the level of success in his career he had reach. All was thrown away by a dumb senseless preventable car accident.
In spite of the limited factual background - wind generators and the Nevada state line - I still enjoyed the recreation. FWIW, the timing between the ticket and the collision proves that Dean’s average speed between the two points was not over the speed limit. But of course average isn’t proof of his speed at the time of the collision. And that’s what it was, a collision. I too know the location, having driven past it many times in the 70s. It was not an “accident” but was due to Appleseed turning in front of the Porsche, which had the right of way. Regardless it was tragic - as are all fatal collisions.
Welcome to Nevada?? Outstanding digital recreation of the accident, but did you guys do literally ANY research about where the crash actually happened?
There's a documentary done many years ago. Using state of the art serveying equipment, digital technology, skid marks etc. It's called The Day James'Dean Died. It's highly detailed. & I have a great book titled the same. Court testimonials etc.
Great reenactment, but why is there steam from the front of the Porsche, when the 550 Spyder had a rear engine? Porsche didnt have a front engine car till the mid 1970's when the 924 came out. Other than that, great job! 👍
Unless you're a programmer and can design your own simulation, you use what is commercially available so it's not 100% perfect but the kinetics of the crash and where the vehicles ended up looks pretty close to what actually happened.
If the recreation is accurate with a 1956 Bel Air in front of Turnupseed blocking his view of Dean's Porsche until he had already started his turn, then you can understand why the crash happened. But from what I've read there was nothing obstructing Turnupseeds view of the Porsche at the time of the accident. He either didn't see him, or just misjudged Dean's speed. Guess we'll never really know.
given the fact that the Porsche was undoubtedly being driven flat out there is every chance that Turnupseed misjudged the closing rate. he had no reason to believe they would be in collision proximity that fast, judging by the cars he had always seen coming at a much slower pace. further, the Porsche was very small and would probably have seemed much further away compared to the larger cars he was used to seeing
@@coldlakealta4043obviously that intersection is very dangerous, if you stop and wait for opposing traffic to pass to turn you can get hit from behind, the intersection makes no sense
Close! However, the Spyder's tires never touched the ground again until it struck the fence. James and his passenger were struck airborne and flung out of the vehicle. I understand it's hard to replicate in BeamNG Drive....but that is what happened.
Dean was not flung out. he was trapped in the car by his feet being jammed under the pedals. his body rested against the passenger door with his head over the sill
@@toomanyhobbies2011, Wow, an old prudish John Bircher here to complete the 1950s period atmosphere. Going to go on next about how rock-and-roll music is a communist plot to subvert American youth?
Very good simulation, not sure why there was steam coming from the front of Dean's car, given the engine was in the back and the engine was aircooled, still, informative nevertheless.
I noticed that too and earlier when showing the car road racing there were what looked like AC Cobras but they didn't come out until 1962, I suppose they could've been AC Aces. Nit picking points really
This simulation did orient things correctly, it has previously been confusing to me, as to the actual position of the two cars. That bit of intersection was re-constructed many years ago, the exact site of the collision is about 20 yards to one side of the newer intersection. The old section of the road is overgrown, but still visible somewhat. That old turn situation was truly a dangerous place!
Seems like a very deadly intersection in desperate need of a traffic light or yield sign. Anyone know if there is one in place today? It would obviously have proved it’s worth…
Saw a recreation that included the sun's position at the time of the crash. This is the most underrated aspect of this entire tragedy. The sun was facing directly into Turnipseed's eyes. Add in the fact that Dean's Porshe was silver and shiny and it stands to reason that Turnipseed simply didn't see Dean. Call it lazy driving by Turnipseed or blindness by the sun. Dean's speed at the time of the impact could be a factor as well. The stars aligned to make this tragedy.
What I have never been able to understand is if Dean did see the oncoming car at the last moment why did he swerve to the right instead of the left? It seems he swerved right into its path
because he was going at least 55, the other guy was going that or more, and in such a moment, you got only one moment. There was no extra moment to make that move.
This makes it seem as if Turnupseed turned Infront of Dean. If so, his right front and grill would have been damaged, but it was his left front that was smashed in and Dean would have been able to see him, brake then turn left out of his way. So Turnupseed was lying. He could/should have seen Dean's car but he turned left INTO Dean's left wheel and door , Dean's face had glass in it from the Ford's headlight. It was entirely Turnupseed:s fault. He lied and got away with it.
hey frank, i just seen another simulation of great detail and close to this one's description but slightly off in simulation..this one has turnup starting the left turn early to keep up his speed as he apparently didn't see dean approaching. he drove that route almost weekly and at that area any other car/vehicle in past was 2x 3x bigger than deans as just pointing out possible mind/eye memory of turnup. this vid says half way thru the turn he see's dean and tries to come back right to clear dean's lane. the porche was noted always to skid left /right on hard braking during racing events. this vid showed dean skid right close to a t- bone with turnups left side on his right turn, they said a car behind who was passed by dean prior to intersection said dean was "hauling a.." (not their term) and on impact deans car did a completed flip and 360 spin airborne to landing. according to vid a inquest was held and found turnup turned into a speeding dean so they called it even, no charges.
@@jrnumex9286 Yeah, I seen that. They are basing their videos simulations on Turnupseed's statement to police. But he was lying, the physical evidence of the damage on both cars, does not support his version. What does, is Dean was driving straight in his lane at about 65mph and Turnupseed turned directly into Dean's left side, flipping his car up in the air. The outcome was far from even, Dean was killed and the other guy bust his nose.
I've seen eye witnesses saying that the Porsche flipped into the air after hitting Donald 's car, also the skid marks on the road shows signs of it as well. I wonder if it's true, as it would explain why the Porsche's so damaged even in spots that didn't hit on Donald's vehicle
Crazy how he turned into the collision. Considering his pedigree he should have known there was no point: 1) the car was too far into the turn, and wouldn’t have been able to correct itself for his turn in to work avoiding the collision. 2) There was nothing to turn into but dirt and a fence which are still significant hazards. The correct move should have been turn opposite of the car, use the adjacent lane as your area for correction after such a maneuver. Obviously if there was traffic behind the car then this would have been moot, but from what I can ascertain there wasn’t.
About 20 years ago, I watched a video here in YT about this crash. It was created by a company that creates comparative analysis' of vehicles crashes, and they created one for Dean's crash. They estimated the true speed of Dean at about 55 mph. This is was done by analyzing the resting spot of his car, where the cars hit, and the distance that both cars travelled after hitting each other and then stopping. They also compared different speeds and found that where Dean's car rested, which was against a telephone pole, he was probably travelling at 55 mph. Had he travelled faster, or slower, his car would have rested on either side of the pole. Very interesting computer simulation by a company that does this as a business. Some witnesses that saw Dean and his passenger before the accident, state that Dean was not driving when the accident occurred.
That was just one crazy old guy who said that Dean wasn’t driving. He absolutely was. He wasn’t speeding either which is another myth. None of what happened was his fault
@@JCStorm76 I was never really convinced that Dean was not driving. I think the passenger was his mechanic, Rolf Wütherich. How could they be 100% sure?
I read the mechanic was thrown from the car. Supposedly Dean's glasses were not found. I'm assuming he was wearing since his vision wasn't good. Fyi the town Cholame rhymes with Shazam. It's nowhere near the Nevada border
A few comments about the narrative, there are some inaccuracies. First the video shows a sign saying that they are close to the Nevada state line, the Navada sate line is several hundred miles east. Second both he and his mechanic were both sited for speeding by a California Highway Patrol officer not BPD. Three although not stated in the piece here it was estimated he averaged over 70 mph from the time of the citation to the accident scene. A small piece of trivia if you see one of the posters there are three signatures on the citation, Mr. Deans, the citing officer ( O.V. Hunter ) and Sargent R.H. Barrett, signing of the citation because Mr. Dean was not able to appear.
Very interesting well done recreation. Not to nitpick, but that intersection is nowhere near Nevada, so I'm confused by the "Welcome to Nevada" sign....

How do i know that if I don't have a copy of the police report? Truly the police report could eliminate much conjecture. Thanks for the video!!!

I have been to the site of the wreck many times. It is all pretty much changed these days. 2-years later my dad, a big fan of Dean's, died in a wreck in a brand new TR-3. the curve where it happened is now eliminated when they straightened the road, but the old road and road cut is still visible there. The Ford was a Coupe, not a sedan. There is a difference. I have owned them both plus a Vicky hardtop. The recreation shows what appears to be a Chevy. GM car for sure. As I understand it, 'Little Bastard' disappeared and has never resurfaced
There is a company out of California that works crash simulations and they showcased this accident, but this was about 20 years when they posted their video here in RUclips. Per their findings based upon Dean's car resting against the pole, it was determined that he was driving about 55 mph.
Depending on the status of oncoming traffic it is often best to swerve towards where the other car was rather than where it is going. Very tough to keep up high levels of situational awareness on long trips.
The government doesn't want you to know that bad road design is the primary cause of accidents. There are other factors, but a bad road is unsafe at any speed (you could be stationary or driving sloy and doing everything right and still get hit). A good road can be safe even with unlimited speeds
Gawd there is so much wrong with this video. # 1. It was a CHP (California Highway Patrol) officer that issued Dean a ticket, not Bakersfield Police. # 2. What's up with all the wind turbines in 1955? # 3. "Welcome To Nevada" sign? The crash site is nowhere near Nevada. # 4. Area Code 457 does not exist. # 5. Double Yellow lines were not in use until 1960. # 6. The tachometer in Dean's car shows the engine is not running. #7. The description of Turnipseed's direction is backwards. The recreation of the accident is interesting, it was probably how it happened, but with less reaction capacity from both Dean and Turnaseep. The Ford turned left when James Dean's car was practically on top of it, so they couldn't avoid it. The driver of the Ford not only did not see the Porsche, but he also seemed distracted or did not see it, because he had no visibility due to the color of the Porsche or he had another car in front of him, according to other videos I saw.

If his foot was stuck in the pedals that surely suggests he was driving, probably stuck on the brake pedal.

Horrible re-creation. There were no windmills and the other car was a 49 Ford Tudor.
There's a documentary done many years ago. Using state of the art serveying equipment, digital technology, skid marks etc. It's called The Day James'Dean Died. It's highly detailed.
& I have a great book titled the same. Court testimonials etc.
Allegedly Dean's last words to his mechanic before the crash were, "He'll see us. He's got to see us."
That is likely a myth, Rolf was seriously injured and had no recollection of the crash according to medical records.
It was late afternoon and the sun was in Turnupseed's eyes. His windshield may have been dirty also, which would have made it worse.
given the fact that the Porsche was undoubtedly being driven flat out there is every chance that Turnupseed misjudged the closing rate. he had no reason to believe they would be in collision proximity that fast, judging by the cars he had always seen coming at a much slower pace. further, the Porsche was very small and would probably have seemed much further away compared to the larger cars he was used to seeing

Great recreation but what’s up with the Welcome to Nevada sign lol.
Lesson learned. If you buy a Porsche, don't crash it. It's a literal fire bomb if you do.
Interesting then that there was no fire whatsoever. Or, as a responding officer said, not so much as a spark, let alone a fire.
What I have never been able to understand is if Dean did see the oncoming car at the last moment why did he swerve to the right instead of the left? It seems he swerved right into its path
Of course you'd swerve to the right, it's a natural reaction to turn that way seeing as the car is to the left of you. What a dumb question.
because he was going at least 55, the other guy was going that or more, and in such a moment, you got only one moment. There was no extra moment to make that move.
@@tonykartracer8032, what an assassine reply.
Glad you're not a juror.
Without paint, a small and fast aluminum race car might have appeared to be a ghostly apparition?
What's with the windmills and the 'Welcome To Nevada' sign? These glaring inaccuracies cast doubt on the entire video.
I've seen eye witnesses saying that the Porsche flipped into the air after hitting Donald 's car, also the skid marks on the road shows signs of it as well. I wonder if it's true, as it would explain why the Porsche's so damaged even in spots that didn't hit on Donald's vehicle
The Porsche was constructed using lightweight Aluminium for racing I think? Not very strong in the event of a crash, that's why it was so crumpled.

Crazy how he turned into the collision. Considering his pedigree he should have known there was no point:
1) the car was too far into the turn, and wouldn’t have been able to correct itself for his turn in to work avoiding the collision.

Is there any way to recreate NASCAR, and Formula 1 crashes? Dale Earnhardt would be an interesting one. Keep up the amazing work! 👍 👌
Edit: I feel dumb, I just clicked on all of your other videos, oof! Gonna check them out 👍 subscribed👍
Thx)
This is the first time I ever heard that Dean wasn't alone in the car!!!
Warner Bros was the studio that made Dean's last movie: Giant -- Dean was required to sign a special contract that forbade him from racing until all of his scenes in the movie were completed. They wrapped up production, and Dean went and killed himself.
I always thought he wrapped it around a pole...and was by himself. Clearly not his fault...other driver did not yield to oncoming traffic.
