Turnipseed made an illegal left turn at a stop sign- without stopping- until he spotted Deans car. By then- it was too late -& the rest is history-

The car did a 360 in the air and the mechanic was on the ground so obviously it was total chaos and the place Jimmy’s arms and head ended up could have been leaning in any direction. The cops say he was still alive when they showed up. That’s what’s intriguing to me. Was he conscious at all after the crash?

That "last witness" was Bill Hickman following behind in Jimmy's '55 Ford wagon. Sanford Roth was travelling with Hickman and photographed the crash scene. of course jimmy was driving. he was on his way to race his brand new & much prized porsche, & had decided last minute to drive the car itself to the race site instead of towing it, as had been originally planned. he made this decision so he could "break in" the engine & get a feel for it in anticipation of racing it. in light of all of this, why would he let someone else drive it? anyone who knows anything about dean knows he'd never settle for being a passenger in that situation.

Jimmy's face had glass from Turnipseeds left headlight embedded in his face, and his feet were trapped under the foot pedals. The impact crushed the drivers side of Deans car and pushed him over toward the passenger seat. There was no way that Rolf was driving, or he would have been killed on impact, as Jimmy was.

There's an enormous flaw in the recorded testimony presented in this video: the guy says at 6:23 about the Porsche "here it's going twice as fast," but the inquest showed without a doubt that Dean's car wasn't speeding. If it had been, the distance between impact and where it settled would have been much greater... So no, this guy is not a credible witness.

James Dean was driving the Porsche Spyder when he crashed into Donald Turnupseed's Ford at the CA 466/41 Junction near Cholame. Dean had to be extricated from the Spyder as his left foot was wedged between the crushed clutch and brake pedals. He became a captive in the cockpit, whereas his passenger, mechanic Rolf Wutherich was thrown out when the Porsche flipped in mid air, according to witness, Robert White. I know the 550 car very well. It would be very easy in low light conditions to mistake the front of the car for the rear. A severly crashed 550 may confuse a back country cop as the engine is in the rear also. The steering wheel would give it away a bit I know, however, remember this was a very rare car on the road at the time, and cops were basically high school drop-outs, or bozos at the time. It is indeed a very fun car to drive hard.

forgot to mention this: in 2009 i looked up the dynamics of the crash, tyre marks, speed etc on the net. one thing was obvious to me but unmentioned by anyone since 1955: Turnupseed's tyre markings show he did see Jimmy, and what's more, it is easily possible he used the turning as an alibi and as a tool to murder Jimmy. He could just walk away from it free. Jimmy was a more awake spirit, it showed in him: my spirit feels he was done for here. love him.

Patricia Armstrong That’s a myth. It’s still in books so a lot of people still believe it but he didn’t have time to say anything. It was a tenth of a second and he got smashed. That’s why the accident happened. They’ve constructed the whole crash based on eyewitnesses and photos etc. If he had time to say that he could have easily avoided wrecking, but the driver turned in his lane at high speed to make that sort of fork in the road at the last second.
The mechanic didn’t even understand English so he would have had no idea what Jimmy said. He was also interviewed years later.
I find the whole thing fascinating, especially the fact that he was probably still alive when they brought him in the ambulance, (there’s contradictory eyewitness accounts) and the ambulance was involved in another crash on the way to the hospital.

I drove that, and the surrounding stretches of rural highway back in the 70's and 80's. In late afternoon, in the lazy wide-open stretches of highway as you cross the foothills to the coast in south central California the type of accident that killed Dean are sadly easy to understand and unsurprising. No alcohol or high speed required. A momentary lack of attention, or simply not seeing a little sports car is all it took. James Dean is now forever young...

The estimate of that Porsche 550 speed was over 100 mph. May have been closer to 120 mph from what Dean's own people were saying in the car towing the trailer. Calculations put his average speed at 120 mph when he passed the car towing the trailer. Add the fact its downhill & almost a straight away this might have been the highest speed he achieved in that car that day right at the wrong time. 1100 pounds is super light weight for a car. Low to the ground & a Silver color that blends into the road. All these things contribute to Turnupseed misjudging the Porsche 550 or not seeing it until the last moment. Reminds me of the JFK Jr small plane crash. Many things working against a good outcome.

@@organboi Speed estimates of the Porsche varies. The driver of Dean's station wagon tow vehicle Bill Hickman said he was passed by Dean's Porsche doing 85 mph as they headed down SR46. Several other drivers reported being passed Dean going down SR46 at high speed. That downhill grade then the flat straight going into the intersection where the accident happened. Car & Driver did a computer simulation which estimated only 55 mph. The correct answer is ..... we don't know. The only people who know for sure Dean, is dead & even Rolf Wutherich didn't remember the events before or after that crash.

History repeats itself: Another fast car loving actor in a Porsche : Paul Walker age 40 star of Fast and Furious,(a flim about street racing), was in a Porsche Carrera GT on Nov 30 2013 when the driver somehow lost control of the vehicle. It then slammed into either a post or a tree and then burst into flames and exploded. Paul a was killed along with another in his Prosche but the bodies were unidentifiable. Police say high speed was a major factor. Paul starred in many major films, a handsome actor of 40 with an extremely sucessful career and he liked fast cars. "Life In The Fast Lane" Eagles RIP Paul. The human body was designed for speeds up to a fast jog and to fly no higher then a man can jump and the body will not evolve with the need for speed achieved through machines.

James Dean was driving straight ahead in his lane and had right-of-way. The other car tried to cut across to at a sharp angle to side road on left without slowing down or yielding. He crossed in front of an oncoming vehicle, which unfortunately was Jimmy in that tiny lightweight Porsche. Turnipseed's abrupt left angle crossing oncoming traffic puts him at fault.

In most car accidents there is alway blame for both. There is almost always something each drive could have done to have avoided the accident. This is the first time I heard anyone say he wasn't the driver. I have to think this fellow Miss saw the incident. The two car following was driven my Deans instructor. I'm sure he knew who was driving. As a trivia point that instructor was the driver of the black charger in the Bullit movie. I believe he was what you could call an actor/stunt man. He was also in the French connection.

Donald Turnupseed sustained a minor cut to the bridge of his nose, and claimed that he never saw Dean, despite two sets of skid marks that proved he had. He then had to hitch home, and was picked up by one Blackie Kymes. They stopped at a diner, where Kymes heard the radio report announcing Dean's death. He decided not to tell Turnupseed, for fear of upsetting him further, and drove him back to his Tulare home.

James Dean didn't have to be in accident, 2 hours prior to the accident he was pulled over. The 10-15 minutes of his drive was taken away for doing 65 to 70 on a empty road with some posted speed limits of 55 mph. Now if he wasn't pulled over he would have been been 15 minutes farther from site of accident those 2 vehicles would not have met. Also, frequency of posted speed limit signs were a lot less, so while driving would relax the foot and probably speed between those posted speed limits. Chances would be that the pickup with the trailer would have taken it's place

James Dean had to be driving the car... no doubt in my mind! Why? His foot had to be extricated from under the peddles. The driver's side was struck by the Ford, and James Dean had glass embedded in his face. As the Porsche had a plexiglass windshield, the only source of glass to the riders in the Porsche, was the Ford's headlights. Glass in face + Dean's skull was fractured in several places, and his neck had multiple breaks too, that's sounds like a close encounter with the headlight to me. Case closed.

Well with in the limits at the time . The Driver of the ford cut from the out side lane to turn and had to cross the opposed lane to make that turn and drove straight in front of Deans car resulting in the collision . From their conclusion they found the ford driver to be at fault . Interesting

I've always thought, if James Dean could return from the grave to give his side of the story, he would be angered a lot of people believe he had a death wish and was responsible for his own demise. My guess is he was driving "blind" directly into the setting sun. Could be wrong. The other driver still may have not seen the car because of the blinding sun even if he looked in Jimmy's direction 2 or 3 times before turning and then realizing it was all too late to avoid collision.

    • @jasontroy4723
      @jasontroy4723 8 лет назад +7

GordanGeeko : Spot on buddy . Most people truly believe that he was responsible for that collision and his own passing . They are totally 100 % wrong . The man ( Dean ) was driving along a highway at 55 mph ( Current limit at the time ) The chap in the ford was on a slip road witch joined directly onto the highway on about a 30 / 40 degree angle . This chap drove directly into deans path resulting in his death . This type of intersections have been abolished due to high accident value . There are docos and recreations proving this point out right dean was in the right . But wrong place . On youtube etc . Some times or most times it easy for people to see what they want to see . And this is one of these situations . Most unfortunate .

James Dean was driving the Porsche. The Porsche didn't cause the accident. It was Turnipseed's Ford that turned into the opposing lane to make a left turn that caused the accident. It impacted the driver's side of the Porsche, pinning Dean's legs in the driver's footwell while his upper body was flung into the passenger area. Rolf Weutherich was ejected from the vehicle and as it spun he ended up outside on the road on the driver's side of the Porsche. Shortly before the crash, Dean got ticketed for speeding so he was obviously driving the 550 at the time and continued doing so until the fatal accident. Had it really been the mechanic that was driving the Porsche, where were the injuries consistent with having been directly hit by a much heavier Ford at a combined 90+ MPH?

James Dean's left foot was wedged between the crushed clutch and the brake pedal upon impact. Jimmy had to be extricated from the wreck. No question about that Jimmy was the driver. Don Dooley just made a split second mistake. See James Dean At Speed, 2005 Ebay and Amazon.com Lee Raskin, Author and 550 Porsche Historian.

Turnipseed was entering the highway from a farm road and totally misjudged the speed of Dean's Porsche. The farmer clearly was at fault, but it made for a better story to blame the celebrity. what i dont understand is why would the guy lie about being in the passanger's seat? he couldnt be blamed for Jimmy's death if it was the other car that came into their lane, right? and besides, the trangedy is that in a way or another Jimmy did die :(, whether he was driving that bloody car or not.

To jimmypier54: I interviewed Don Dooley over the telephone in 1993, along with Bill Bast, Roger Cannon and Warren Newton Beath. That's where these sound bites come from. I also had a brief email correspondence with Donald Turnupseed's son David, in 2005, but of course he wouldn't talk- except to say that his father never talked about the crash- ever.

@xvoy2002 thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, my grandfathers has been deceased for many years. He told me about this when i was about 10, so 40 years ago. I do remember him saying he had no idea who the person was since it was a shocking scene and Dean was messed up from the accident. I believe it was a police officer who told him who was actually dead.

Don Duley the witness was truthful, but became confused. James Dean was the driver because his left foot was crushed between the clutch and brake pedals...holding him captive in the wreck. Dean had to be extracted. The mechanic, Rolf Wutherich was thrown out of the Porsche onto the shoulder of the road. See Wikipedia James Dean for updated facts. People should check out the National Geographic show on the crash.Proves pretty effectively that the driver of the Porsche would have been killed instantly, which tends to happen if your head and torso slam into the grill of a 50 Ford at 55 mph.Ergo,James Dean dead,James Dean=driver.Rumors never die.For years people assumed that the photo of Rolf on the ground who at first glance looks like Jimmy, proved that James Dean had been cut in half.

Too much of a coincidence and that name is so pathetically fake. I think he was murdered to scare kids from racing cars at that time drag racing and regular racing was huge. They used JD its twisted

There r Conspiracy theories tat always exists about Iconic incident, stars, politicos, etc. As the saying goes 'only the good die young' isn't a blunt phrase. Therefore metaphorically speaking these theories keeps them fresh in our & in the memories of generations to come.

I would like to know what the witnesses name is? Can anyone tell me? I'm very curious about what really happened to him.I feel these things are still relevant, for his fan's to know.I do know that the man who survived the crash, got fired from Porsche and later he died in a car crash after he moved back to Germany. And he tried to commit suicide they say because of his painful injury's.

+stardustgirl Who gets fired from Porsche and THEN moves back to Germany. I love the reverse logic applied to reasoning so many infamous deaths. I don't even know how at least a quarter of the reported deaths/murders/suicides are believed by moderately intelligent people. James Dean has a very small FBI file, but I'm sure it would list the name of the other occupant of the car. Or a news clipping in the file would. If not, the file of the other occupant would. I'm sure the genuinely helpful information about Jimmy is under a name you wouldn't necessarily know to check. Patty Hearst kidnap files bear those names re: only that, while both she and her grandmother are "Patricia Hearst". Someone like Sam Giancana has like 15 listed aliases. Likely because he owned (well the mafia in general) owned the Hollywood Actors Agency, representing many of the top entertainers at the time. While believed to be armed and dangerous and proceed with extreme caution. ;)
