    Hi Everyone! This is a conceptual piece. It applies to anything that gets copied from a Rolex to a Cobra to a 550 Spyder. The cars featured are just an example of that concept. It was never meant to be a direct comparison thus the title.
    Real or Replica?? That is the question :) Which would you choose? Do you agree with my points? Let me know!!

      I've always wanted a Porsche 356 Speedster C, but truth be told I'd rather have a replica with disc brakes and a strong 1835cc or maybe even a 2180cc engine. But the idea of owning a real 356 is not a must for me anymore. I think after owning a couple of Porsches I've found that I'm more interested in the performance than the nostalgia of a real 356. I feel I would be disappointed. So it's replica for me all the way!

      I like your idea about to compare an original to a replica I just would have chosen a 356 replica to point out even more the difference.
      I had the fun to drive a 356 replica and was surprised about the craft-mans ship ,pretty solid with a new price depending on the engine from $ 35000.00 affordable and to point that out again it's not a kit car !

    I owned a 1955 Speedster. It turned out to be a rust bucket. I bought it anyway, drove it hard, and enjoyed every second. I found it in DC IN THE EARLY 60's when I was working at Pax River NAS, MD. every afternoon 2 other engineers and I would race back to town . The race was to see who could stay in front. If I was, they couldn't keep up. The others were driving a TR-3 and an XK-120' the jag could pass only on the straights, then leave us in the dust. My Porsche has magnesium wheels an aluminum doors, hood, and engine hatch. When I had to go back to Long Island, I sold the Porsche for what I paid for it. Sure missed it. Bought a Mercedes instead. It had a better heater. I envy your pair, both on my wish list. I would like the Beck 550 replica in today's environment.livin in FL, I d go for a replica coupe with A/C. YOU DID AN EXCELLENT job in your video.

    Excellent, balanced discussion of two very different cars (even though they share a vintage look). There's no right or wrong choice between vintage and replica. Franny's done a great job articulating pros and cons of each. A buyer's resources, skills, and anticipated activities with the car will point to the right choice for them. To each her (or his) own. Your "Garage" videos are really great, and getting better all the time. Thanks and keep up the good work!

    Hi Franny, really enjoyed your comments on replicas and originals. Completely agree that the wonderful old original cars are being parked up and ownership is becoming burdensome. Thankfully I've got one old and one new so I make the effort to drive each on alternate weekends - we're lucky down under because the weather isn't too extreme in winter and great in the evenings in summer. Great job with your site, keep it up.

    This is my first channel that I have subscribed to. The use of the Beck copy is far superior to me than the daily use of the Porsche. I have through experience with air-cooled 911's. Over the years I have owned several of them. I am a fan of the Beck's cars. It's a driver. The ownership of the others weren't the same thing.

    I really enjoyed this video. I am drawn to the replica. There is a freedom from the responsibilities of the original. There is a fancier replica version of the 550 made in aluminum with engine availability upto the four cam. Me, I would stick with this car in fiberglass. I think the four bolt wheels allow the use of readily available front disc brake rotors

    super lucky to have driven from time to time back in high school. My sister use to work for an A-List Celebrity in in the early 90's and she had 2 "356's one spider in black and another coupe in red. use to like driving the red one as it had dual carbs and was really dam fast for myself at the time. I'd totally go replica with a Subaru EJ25 non turbo - 6sp manual with limited slip diff !

    Beautiful cars. I’d take either. One is historical and cool. It will win you a lot of admiration at a cars and coffee.
    The other gives you freedom to modify, to make it your own. You can tell stories about the build process. It also let’s you guilt free screech the tires through an apex without worrying about the “What if I understeer into that wall?” thought holding you back. Plus if you have a part wear out, you can typically get a replacement at autozone. None of that scavenging through forums and having your car be down months or longer while you wait on some hard to find component.

    While I have a heartfelt kinship with a Porsche “born” four years after me, I’ve always been intrigued by Beck replicas. That said, I own a 1990 944S2 cabriolet (Porsche fanatics everywhere snear as they read this) but I’ve loved these cabs ever since I laid eyes on my XO’s who was going through a divorce and a mid-life crisis! He parked it on the pier next to our ship in Norfolk back in the mid-1990s. My 1990 is obviously much younger than the 58, but I am starting to “feel the pain” with OEM parts and availability. So for pure fun....I vote the Beck! And before they “plant me”, I’m going to drive the hell out of my car! I enjoyed your video.....it was a relaxing “watch”. Thank you.

    For all guys owning a replicas. What's the everyday difference between the body? Metal Vs fiberglass. Obviously if you knock on it it doesn't sound like metal but otherwise? The feel when you get in, when you close the doors. Is it basically the same?

  • @Zundfolge
    @Zundfolge 6 лет назад +1

    It kind of depends on the replica. A Beck Speedster or Spyder or one of the modern Cobra replicas are real nice and close to the originals, but a Laser 917 or one of those VW Bug powered MGs are nowhere near the original experience and are just rattle traps.
    One of the Beck Spyders done by Boulder Speedster Co (with an STi motor in it) would just be a ton of fun.

    Well, I have worked on 4 or 5, 356 variants including a Super 90 and a 4 cam and all of them were nicer to drive on the road than any 550 including an RSK I got lucky enough to lap Lime Rock in ...
    The Beck cars weren’t cheap to start with but they were better engineered than almost any“Kit” car..
    356 replicas all feel like a beetle to drive and are a bit slower than a real 356 because their Heavy fiberglass bodies are made with a chopper gun. Beck 550s can be used at track days, are great in the canyons and other curvy roads. (Not a car for trips or fat guys though)..
    The 5 lug(wide 5) spindles were part of the drum brake technologies used at the time.. nothing to do with strength.. the wheel bearings are the weak point and those drums are fine but require technique and knowing their limits . You can put wide 5 /disc brakes on the Beck Spyder to run more accurate replica wheels.. but they don’t add much (If any)value or performance. With a Beck 550 you can pick any engine you want from 60- 400hp and have whatever level of lunacy you choose.. but a fastidiously original standard 356? Fun to look at, brag about owning? Maybe.. but any magic you feel is in your head. Because they were made to be fun usable road cars, they are good but not great cars. The Beck feels like you expect a vintage Porsche race spec car to drive and sound (and rare without being authentic) they are not cheap kit cars. But they (and all real 550s)are tiring on a freeway and barely have room for a bag lunch and a skinny friend. Race cars got the lightest available parts, so those cheesy Beetle arms might be accurate.

    People knock fiberglass but the original Porsche 904’s from 64 65 were fiberglass not aluminum. So a fiberglass Porsche 550 isn’t as far off as most people think. I would use a 356/912 engine, fibersteel pedal assembly, e-brake and shifter. A banjo steering wheel and paint it springtime yellow with red darts.
    I wouldn’t try to pass it off as a 550 obviously but would have no problem taking to a Porsche show. Some people would be rude, some laugh, some would think it was cool. Kind of like every thing else in life.

    I appreciate each one for what it is. I love to go see the originals but having something I can hope in and mess around with is it's own reward. In my toy cars over the years I've had 2 kit cars. I bought both used for sub 5K. The were both what I call 20/20 cars. That is they looked really good from 20 ft and/or 20 mph but you could start picking them a bit up close at a show. 1 was a 52 MG TD kit on VW the other a Fiberglass dune buggy. I'd buy another to enjoy in a heartbeat. If I find Jay Leno's income I'll probably collect a few originals but I suspect a carefree kit will still be fun. Both of my kits were cheap to maintain and drive around a lot of fun per dollar.

    When you said that 99% would not know the difference, you made me realize where I have always stood on "replica's" of any kind... I know it's not real; and honestly since I can afford very few "real" things the past few years I would rather do without. It brought back memories from the 1980s when no one liked S model Bentley's -- "the poor man's Rolls-Royce" as it was called, and people were slapping reproductions RR grills on their Bentley's -- I was proud to drive my Bentley then, and I guess that's why I am enjoying the heck out of my "poor man's Porsche" a 97 Boxster.. it may be inexpensive, but it's original. Great video as always... you guys are truly "originals" in the clutter of RUclips crap. Love your style!

    I think the replica has a lot of potential. As much as I usually hate replicas, this is different. This car isn't a C3 Corvette with a replacement fiberglass body molded off a classic Ferrari, that's a Corvette pretending to be a Ferrari. But these replicas aren't that far off of the originals, usually. I'd find a late model computer controlled drivetrain for it, with the suspension, brakes, and handling of a newer car. I'd go looking for a Boxter, or something in the junk yard. It shouldn't be that hard, people tend to crash fast cars more often than the family mini van. So it would be new Porsche pretending to be an old one, and that's not the same thing at all. And it would be a bunch more fun to drive than either the old original, or the new donor car that gave it life. I have done builds like that before. The crappy old 6 cylinder base model I found in the junk yard that was never going to be collectable, and restored the body, but went state of the art with everything mechanical. It was a brand new, 30 year old car. And it got better mileage, made twice as much horsepower, and passed smog. Why not? The style of the classic, but the performance and driving experience of the ones you can buy brand new at the dealership. The biggest difference was usually that my rebuilt classics were lighter, and faster than the new ones on the showroom floor. And forget about the real classics, there was no comparison, the only thing they had going was the same style. They just aren't the same. Imagine a C3 Corvette with an LT1 and related drivetrain underneath it. It won't be collectable, but it'll be fast as stink, and a very dependable daily driver. I think new cars are ugly.

      It does have a top (looks like a Speedster top, but was removed on this car). Also, it does have a tonneau as well. But, my point was that it has a plastic body, powder-coated frame, vinyl seats... It isn't some multi-million dollar car, it is just a toy that you can dry off the seats, drive away and let it dry out in the sun. No worries!

    (IMO) There's really only one factor to consider in Real or Replica - your budget. However, you do make a great point when it comes to those that want to modify (swap out the engine for more HP potential, Body mods, etc)... Even in this case though I think most of us (at least me(?) would prefer to hunt down an already non #'s matching original if it was in our budget.
    Not that there's anything wrong with Replicas!

    Actually classic car insurance is a lot cheaper because those cars are not driven everyday all the time, and they are covered for whatever the value is of the vehicle. I'm just curious does Colorado have a state auto safety inspection?

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  6 лет назад

      Hi David, that is another good point. I didn't talk about that because it is pretty state specific, but, no state inspection here but we do have emissions in the greater Denver area. Others have said that getting the car tagged is an arduous process.

      There are notable differences between the physical exterior appearance in the older 550 replicas. Namely, the replicas are a few inches longer and the rear arches are higher in the replicas. I've been told the rear arches have been reduced in height on the newer 550's replicas. As for the interiors, you can make the replicas look like the originals, or carry over the VW bits.

    It's been a long time since I've looked at the Beck. At the time, I was considering building one with a Porsche 914 2.0L drive train. Perhaps even a 914-6.
    Currently, I am looking at building a Jaguar XKSS or an XJ3. Although, I might be better off with the Beck. Yes, if you're actually intending to live with one (daily driver) you are vastly better off with the replica and better brakes and tires are two of the best reasons. I also would equip any such replica with full ECU; like a Haltech. Living with 50 year old tech is much less than fun :(

    Unfortunately replicas are now much more expensive than they used to be. Used replica Spyders are starting at $35,000. Yes, the body design is still beautiful and they're cool - but $35,000 is still a lot of money for a fiberglass Volkswagen.

    definitely the replica ,reason is simple its usable you can enjoy the car.
    You can have a really pristine classic , but its so nice that you are worried whose going to bang into you, you won,t dare to park far for a coffee, a slight stone chip will cause you sleepless nite.
    Trust me I hv been thru all these. I now keep classic that I drive everyday enjoying them to the full
    I would very much like to owe one of these speedster replicas however they are very expensive these days.

    that´s an old porshe but more simpler than this,it´s impossible everything there was built to last , new ones can´t live so many years, it´s more or less the same as a bug or beetle oil cooled all use air to cool down, if you don´t like old cars buy a newer one ,the boxter is a super car to drive and cheap in second hand, a replica might be very expensive this if well done , as an example see what singer do with 911´s ,they are perfect ,once someone told me it´s singer because he had a band he was the vocal but they didn´t have sucess, well after seeing the first video where he appears , i notice he was from one of my favorite bands in the 90´s i own all his band lp´s being ferment the one that catch my attention from catherine wheel ,his videos are all over youtube ,so singer buids 911 with porshe parts and are incredible to drive i might not never own one but we never know maybe they guy i know that as one in a near future he sells me cheap his

    Hello Heidi, This is a giant question in the Kit Car "Replica" industry. Now a Beck is NOT a Kit Car. But the question we have been facing that would be incredible for you to pursue is Copy Rights. Also referred to as "Dress Code" Ferrari sued the manufactures of the Miami Vice Ferrari replica and won in court, confiscating the molds. That president setting case has always had the Kit industry on edge. Ferrari has sent others cease and desist as resent as this past year. I know there are other companies that have stop manufacturers of replica's. There's other issues such as registrations of a replica that has not been homologated (Certified for crash, exhausted exc..) Other issues you didn't mention is that a lot of states and provinces won't even insure a replica car.
    Can you look into this? That would be a Giant Video with ten's of thousands interested

    What I'm about to say is seen in many RUclips videos. What really bugs me is they say what the video is about in a short clip at the beginning of the video (ie why you might choose one or the other). Then they repeat the same thing 1:30 in to the video. I love people who don't repeat the same thing. It's just a way to lengthen the videos for reimbursement purposes. Thumbs down.

    For many years I'd restore a car to totally original but then only drive it to shows because it was "too nice." I decided I'd rather drive the cars than have them just sit in the garage until the next show. I appreciate the show quality original car very much but I'd choose the replica. A reproduction can also be built to what you want. More powerful engine, better brakes and suspension parts, all from the VW market for the most part. It'll never have the value of an original, but it'll be a far more usable vehicle on modern roads. As for a real 550 spyder, you will never afford one if you can even find one for sale. I've only seen one real one, it was almost finished with it's restoration. It had been crashed in a road race back in the early 60's and was found in a garage in san francisco. The engine was sent back to Porsche for rebuilding, the body was sent to special restorers who can work with aluminum. The car was amazing, and more money to restore then I paid for a house. Beck spyders are about as good as a reproduction can get.

      I built a '32 3 window coupe but it was Fiberglas. The truth is, no matter how nice, everyone wants real steal. I sold it and bought a real '31 Model A. It has a 283 from a '64 Impala and a Muncie 4 speed. Rear end is from a '57 Chevy. The original paint is well worn and the fenders removed. I was at a car show when a guy approached me and asked, "Why isn't your car painted?". I pointed down the street to guys on hands and knees cleaning their cars and said, "Do you see me cleaning this car?". He said, "You're smart". I told him, "Hell, if I want to drive down a dirt road, I don't care". Tourists were coming up taking pictures so I told them to have a seat behind the wheel.

    Replica... I'd like a black 550 and add a stereo to it, but i wouldn't modify a real 550, i'd like to keep it as mint as i could, plus most of 550 replicas are based on VW Beetles. Where i live, the community of VW Bug owners/specialists is big enough and maintenance is cheaper, also i don't think i could give a classic the care it deserves.

  • @mickcoomer9714
    @mickcoomer9714 6 лет назад +7

    The heart says original but the head says replica. Cost, safety, maintenance, reliability and drivability are perhaps the main reasons, with cost being the main one. A lot of classic cars (like the 550 ) have such a beautiful look that we don’t have these days so a replica can offer the looks with a few modern touches.
    I drive a Ferrari replica based on a Merc SL. It’s as quick as the original F149 California. I’ve had it five years, it’s my daily drive (why not, it’s a Merc). It’s done nearly 100,000 miles and the only parts I’ve replaced in the five years are the batteries and the alternator. I don’t have to worry about rust. So the head says replica. Would I like a real one, you bet I would.

    Back in the 60s I had a chance to buy a used 356 for $850 CDN. I held at $800, and the car sold the next day for $850. 10 years later, a guy had an old British bike that he knew nothing about. He wanted $600. I didn't think that I'd ever get my money out, so I passed. It was a Vincent 'Black Shadow'. Dumb! To prove my stupidity, I passed on a Ferrari Daytona, that the guy wanted $20,000 CDN for in the 80s. I didn't have the money, and my girlfriend said I would be a complete idiot to get a bank loan. Yeah, right.
    Truth be told, I probably would have sold all of the above, before the prices went through the roof. At least, this is what I keep telling myself.
