I keep trying to watch this interview but I can only get through 5 minutes before I’m once again inspired by Sam and his musical insight to go write more music. Truly a pleasure to be alive while you’re alive Sam.
Totally get the last girl’s point. Sam’s music is so scientific - wires, ratio, ... even the name Floating Points is like nodes in a neural network. And all together it becomes poetic. I was surprised to discover Sam hadn’t even analysed or noticed it necessarily but perhaps it’s because it’s simply his nature: there’s nothing to explain. Great interview!
I’ll never forget hearing “Vacuum Boogie” and then immediately knowing I had to play it out. Watching the smiles when I did match the audiences smiles.
That's how you know that he knows what he's talking about. If you can explain something that is really complex in accessible terms it shows you've mastered the material. But this is so true for his whole interview, I knew him as an artist but now I really admire him.
58:35 It's not impossible to play it. There is a wind instrument technique where you breathe while playing the instrument. It's difficult but possible.
does anyone know who he refers to at 41:38? I can't quite make out what he says. Thought it was 'Ja Vibes' but can't find any modern soul djs by that name
Got it - it's Floating Points Ensemble - Post Suite / Almost In Profile. Interestingly it only came up when I searched Discogs by Sam Shepherd, not Floating Points.
During the Q&A bit, every native english speaking person suffered from a sudden aphasia. What is it with stuffing a hundred "like/sortoflike" a sentence?
Henry Browning He seems like a nice chap, and the music is not bad, but there is really no reason to babble in front of anybody. Well maybe a resurrected Charles Mingus in my livingroom would do it for me.
Does anyone know what counts exactly as 'fusion' music and why Floating Points wanted to avoid it when working with the Gnawa people in Morocco? (I'm assuming it's because he didn't want to usurp indigenous music's significance on its own but would like to check). If anyone's got any articles that would be great.
+Beatrice Julia obviously im not entirely sure either but my view on it is that they didn't just want to layer both of they're "distinctive sounds" and elements that they're both known for in the song but wanted to create almost a new sound entirely but together. sorry if this isnt what you were looking for or if it doesn't make sense haha

Sincerely feel the same!!
his music is incredible, I admire his craft and willingness to make the listener be patient.
The fact that he cringes at Vacuum Boogie is crazy. It’s one of the greatest electronic music tracks of all time.

Great interview!
Floating Points is a reference to how a computer comprehends decimal numbers, as opposed to integers or strings
@@nikvalinsky I think it also evokes a kind of spacey scientific thing too.
8:35 is the best part

every record Sam played was fantastic
Not even a minute in and we're already talking Laughing Stock. Great!

Absolutely love that album. And spirit of Eden too.
17:08 Pharaoah Sanders, now he's got a record with him

Laughing Stock/ Spirit of Eden are masterpieces. Much respect

Hippy freak questions from the audience. However, what an amazingly talented and intelligent man, and seems like an absolute gentleman.

vacuum boogie is such a tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuneeeeeeeeeeeeeee
The song at 17:21 is “Manhã” by Azymuth.
anyone know what those water jugs are? they are super cool and find it funny when FP is trying to figure it out.
Not a bad one minute summary of his PhD. That's usually quite a challenge.

haha the difficulty of him hearing his own tracks is so relatable
Seems like it’s an ego thing. Relatable, but unnecessary.
1:07 is the end of montparnasse?
Who is the brazilian artist he's namedropping at 1.10?
29:54 ? damn cant define what he says
It's Mr. Man by Air
What is the 'Cole's 1338' sample he was referring to?
Coleman 4038...it's a ribbon microphone, quite popular when recording drums as a one microphone option for overheads.
Thank you!!

Masses Esclaves because if they view floating points in at all a similiar way to i do, theyd be fangirling hard and very nervous
Henry Browning He seems like a nice chap, and the music is not bad, but there is really no reason to babble in front of anybody. Well maybe a resurrected Charles Mingus in my livingroom would do it for me.
+Masses Esclaves Because they're all hipster fucktards

+Burki Mezclador Floating Points, Maalem Mahmoud Guinia - Mimoun Marhaba
big fan of his peers but not his music, not enough feeling in it for me
Listen to bias depot mix, slow burner but very emotive for me
not as bad as the bell ends doing air drums in the crowd tho
