I love the little detail of how Zoro encounters a triceratops (has 3 horns/weapons), Sanji a t-rex (doesn't use its arms) and Luffy a brachiosaurus (stretched neck).

Some notes I like about the giant goldfish are -
1 - The eternal pose miss All-Sunday tries to give Luffy before Little Garden is to Nanimonai island (I think that’s the spelling).
2 - “Nanimonai” roughly translates to mean “Nothing”. (Alluding to little growth /barren island)
3 - The giants mention the island by name as one “produced” by the giant goldfish.
4 - The giants also say that they mistakenly landed there just like Usopp did in his Tall Tale.
I think this is the first arc where the crew had to think their way out of trouble due to the enemies ability not being able to be overcome physically.
(I don’t count smoker in Louge Town due to interference/escape rather than overcoming the obstacle)

This is pretty fascinating. On my first watch, I hated Little Garden, because I wanted to get to Alabasta faster. I gave the show another try and ended up liking Little Garden a lot more. It sets up the mistery about Elbaf, the last island and is a nice proper introduction to Baroque Works.

19:13 Regarding Zoro joking, we actually see his reaction in chapter 129. He was incredibly frustrated.
Also he was willing to cut his feet so he could fight and not just die not having tried anything. He just stopped because he trusted Luffy, Usopp and Karoo. But yeah, his attitude was accepting his situation and accepting the outcomes with no regrets even if it meant death. Either because he would've give his 100% (chopping his legs) or because he chose to trust his crew
Edit: I finished watching the video, so I removed the spoiler warning and the blank space since I saw he's read past chapter 169.

I think the reason Zoro is joking so much is because it is a display of trust. Idk if it happens in Manga like this but in anime Vivi is amazed at how calm and nonchalant the straw hats are while stuck in the wax cake. It's because they trust their crew to save them.

I think its definitely like a pit stop to show off how weird the grand line can be, it overstays its welcome a bit with the villain fight being kinda dragged, but its important to set the tone for the grand line and set up characters and new race. Also set ups some characters from baroque works, but it takes too long to deal with them i guess. I also usually skim through when re-reading. Also i belive that re-reading a single set up arc like this so early into the story is usually not rewarding, because you cannot see the seeds planted and they can't usually stand on itself as a super closed out arc(well it is set up), if you re-read little garden like waayyyy down the line its 100% better, because you can appreciate how early some of the world building is done, and you`ll see "easter eggs" all the time.

Despite Little Garden don't being anyone's favorite arc, I really disagree about feeling like filler (even to someone that doesn't know the journey ahead), the reason for this is the members of Baroque Works being there, and not just that, but higher members than the ones from the previous island (Who are also there), is a scalation from the previous arc, bigger, harder, better, meaningful, if you remove this island you don't get Usopp's dream, you don't get Mr. 3 later and you don't get the reason for One Piece existence: adventure. "It's more fighting" yes, but I think Oda always keep that fresh with different stakes and fighting styles, it's not just "Luffy punches that guy now" it's how he punches. To end, this arc is also really short so, to me, it is worth revisiting, it's fun, creative and new!

  • @tenebrisdumplin4583

I think Little Garden is mostly to show off how weird the Grand Line is and to introduce new characters. So if you already know about the weirdness and/or don't care much for the new characters there isn't much for you. I don't think it quite breaks into bad arc territory (very few arcs in One Piece do), but it's definitely on the slower side.

There’s something about being there for the beginning of a characters dream (usopps dream of being a brave warrior of the sea) that I really enjoy. Every other character sort of already has a goal before setting out with the crew,, I think it’s such an important moment. Also,, so many things are set up!! So this isn't my favorite arc by a long-shot, but it does serve a purpose in-story. Character wise it helps solidify Usopp's goals. World Building wise it introduces the race of giants and the concept of a viking(norse)-esqu culture and island that we can expect to appear at some point (since Ussop has made that his goal). And plot-wise it provides the source for the major impetus of the next arc (Nami being sick).
There's also some more fleshing out of Baroque works and the introduction of Mr. 0 and Sanji's Prince-alias.
It's not really an arc I'd want to go back and re-read. But it's also not one that I feel people can write-off and just skip. I think we would have benefited more if Oda let us properly sit with the giants and learn more about their culture/experience before bringing in Baroque Works. But I also think prehistoric-island with giants just isn't my cup of tea. Lol.

Other than all the details that is set up to other things, what I enjoy most is in Little Garden is Karoo, Miss Goldenweek and Zoro making jokes. I think i enjoy it more than the first half of Alabasta, sure the antagonist except for Miss Goldenweek are super annoying, but enjoy more or less everything else. Will say what I like about Miss Goldenweek isn't her fight with Luffy that is fine, but her interactions with Mr 3 often makes me laugh, or that she just sits in the background eaten rice crackers while 3, 5 and Valentine are serious.

You never had problems downing a beerbong fill given your statement about the usual direction of ale expulsion ;) though I was mostly a spectator, outside of doing it once myself (though I kept it down luckily)
anyways, I heard someone describe a problem of LG last year - the arc stalls progression a lot, especially through the villains. We have the candle set, the candle locks, Goldenweeks colours also bring Luffy to a halt, Mr5 and Valentine chase Usopp and Karoo in circles. Whenever LG moves a little, it's rather enjoyable, at least for me, but outside of that it does drag. And some of the humour is quite as funny on rereads, so that is probably why those are even "dragier".
Though, I do tend to look back on it rather fondly. The set-ups here and there and the whole ecosystem are always nice to think about.
on a side, for me, OP is a battle manga only after it's an adventure and a gag/comedy manga.

Too bad Little Garden wasn't for Dad (or for Noah 😅)
For me, putting the reveal of the giants (and everything else it includes) aside, it's an arc where we get to know the StrawHats a bit better. At this point they are still a new formed crew and it's important for them to establish some crew dynamics and for us to see sides of them that were not given a chance to be shown in the previous circumstances they faced.
So. Since you asked for it, here are some points I like about this arc (I splitted them into 2 separate posts but they are still way too long 😅 Apologies 🙏)
1- Nami's and Vivi's dynamic and Vivi's character: It was established from the end of Whiskey Peak that Nami feels a kinship to Vivi (who is trying to save her people exactly like Nami was). We see them bond a little more here, and Nami's influence on Vivi's mentality is made clear with her decision to go to an adventure and temporarily escape the looming problem she can't do anything about at the moment (Vivi has been undercover since she was a 14 year old kid and couldn't even think of having fun for these 2 whole years). Some of Vivi's characteristics that we may not be aware of, like her level-headed-ness, are also shown to us here.
2- Karoo: How the crew embraces him and treat him like a person, like one of them, instead of just a random animal that is sailing with them for a limited time. And Karoo's whole existence! His behaviour establishes that at least certain animals in OnePiece possess an intelligence that normally animals in our world don't (This may count as more of a world building than a character building element 😅)
3- Zoro's and Sanji's relationship: So far we have seen them get along and also be a bit antagonistic with eachother. This hunting competition is the start of their rivalry, even though their actual positions in the crew and also their life goals are completely different.

its true you really do have to WAIT for the payoff for Little Garden. This is really great, because it means that there may still be futher call-backs to this material that even WE don't currently comprehend. It can't be a spoiler because nothing has even been revealed yet, but the Dinosaurs may have an ever greater significance. The powers of Miss Goldenweek with her painting emotions, this seems like a weird one-off power that is never explained, until hundreds of episodes and years down the line has some deeper significance. Maybe, maybe not. Is magic real? The mystery and romanticism is alive and living in the margins. We just got done with fishmen, a river going up a mountain, someone living inside of a giant whale, and a city full of people who aren't who they say, and now giants and dinosaurs are real surrounded by people with powers and devil fruits. Little Garden is full on Jules Verne, and I'll put a few bucks on a 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' after we go 'Around the World in 80 Days', so don't discount 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas'.

@pejo2807 you're correct, I tend to make very generalized statements whenever I discuss tropes and story beats(i did it several times in this video) in an effort to avoid potentially slipping up and spoiling something massive.
However, I'll stand by the argument that OP uses the enemies to allies trope far less than other anime/manga, especially when it comes to major villains. Usually when Oda does have an antagonist join up, it's either temporary or that character has a reason as to why they're not a "villain".

Welcome back. And Its all good. It happens. As good as One piece is not all of it is a masterpiece.
now the thing about little Garden is. I think. That is is really just a world building Island. It came at a point and Introduced a LOT of things that move the story forward. Or Are super important in the LONG HAUL. But for the immediate future are not. But it does all this so casually. Giants have more a Viking style to them. But its just the Two. We do not learn a LOT about them. And While their fight and Duel is cool..... Its also kinda pointless.
We gained the eternal pose to Alabasta. And Nami got Sick. But those are right at the end. Other than Sanji's talk to Mr. 0. Nothing happens till the very end that really has Consequence. There are a lot of cool parts. Lots of cool displays of power. But not much done by the straw hats.
Infact. Its almost like besides fighting Mr. 3. The focus of the story is the Island and the Giants. Like I said the Arc sets up a lot of important stuff. But it really does it in a way that Almost feels like Filler. And at this point even the bad guys feel like filler bad guys.
But yeah. First time its interesting. Times after its appeal is lost because the most interesting things. The little bits of Knowledge and lore. You already have. And the rest is .... Meh its ok.

I think the issue with this arc is a matter of story telling.
When I first started OP, it was really hard for me to read. It was boring, with an anoying main character. I did not like Buggy, and Nami was the typical hysterical woman in a manga. However, it changed around tome 3 (Usopp arc). And I consider that in this arc, Oda first tried to make a good plot where you start to believe something (usopp is lying, and lying is bad), then you understand why he does that (at first it's for kaya who is sick; and at the end, we learn it was because his mother was on the verge of death, and he was trying to help her telling his father was coming back).
Unfortunately, this arc is one of the weakest of the whole serie. I consider the issue is that there is first the story with no action (or little), and a massive fight at the end. And the fight is boring because there are some scenes where everybody is watching, and only one person is fighting. There are some funny things, but overall it's just an ok arc.
After that, there is the Sanji's arc. Here, there is also a story at first, then a good flashback, and then a fight. This fight is better than the one in usopp arc, but it's a bit long.
Then Nami's arc is the first one where there are also a lot of things told that are changed when the storie goes on (Nami was not a bad person, she did not kill Usopp; Arlong betrayed Nami). And The fight at the end is a bit long, but it's better than the previous ones.
Then Loguepose, there is no fight, there is some lore, and it's short.
Then the lighthouse, there is a sad story, luffy doing unexpected things, and leaving with people. Once again, it's short, so we are just digging in, and we move on.
Then Whisky Peak, it's a funny arc because Zoro is beating everybody on his own, then luffy fight Zoro (and I think it's funny). 2 Baroque works comes and got beat down in no time. There is a lot of action, of revelation, and a change of island. The pacing of this arc is a bit strange, but it's ok.
And then, Little Garden. That's a big island with not many people. There is no village, nothing. Since the only thing to do is discovering the island, it's done really quick. So... what to do next? The idea of them splitting is not a good one, and it makes little sense, unless there is a plot to trap them. So it's an issue in the story telling (of the arc).
I think the problem is that there is no interesting story/things in this arc. Why the giants are fighting ? Because they are giants. They have honor because they live longer. And that's it. You cannot ask much questions about what happens, because it's not deep at all.
Mr 3 has to be intelligent, so he had a plan to kill slowly everybody. But his plan can only work if they split. Otherwise it would have been like Usopp arc end (some people watching while one fight).
But the good news is that IMHO, Oda was trying to write good stories, and he tested and improved up to Little Garden, and after that, the story telling improves drastically. The stories are longer (From the lighthouse, it can be considered as Alabasta's arc), there are a lot of turnaround (as in usopp arc, but in better). And the best thing : massive LORE! A big anchor to the whole story.

I feel like the arc was a lot of fun the first time and has a bunch of fun moments but on rereads it is an arc I often skip. I feel like because a lot of the action and stuff is a lot more dependent on surprises happening and thus are only effective the first time. Like Goldenweek making Luffy say "I don't care". On the first viewing it's a "what is going on here?" moment. It was interesting the first time but now that I know it's coming it's nothing special. Same with Mr.3 and all the other villains. The only times I do reread this arc I tend to skip the action and instead pay attention to the character moments. I love the lore dropped here, love the small character moments that happen. Love that Usopps dream becomes a more tangible idea then the vague thing it was before. But the action and the villains are just so damn boring. So many of the villains before and after I just wanted to punch in the face and these guys I kinda don't care about. Even as most people will say the next villain is weak. But he is just so punchable. But these guys were kinda just meh. Goldenweek is chill and I could see myself having tea with her. But there is nothing special besides theories on how her powers work. Mr.3 only becomes more interesting as the story goes on but in this arc he is your basic cookie-cutter tortured artist serial killer. And then the other 2 who were and stay irrelevant enough to be oneshot by Luffy and Zoro the arc prior. The villains before and after pull a lot more emotions. Most of them are so punchable that seeing them go down even a thousand times is still satifying. But these 4 just plus the unluckies were the weakest by far in how much emotion they could pull out. So despite all the good things this arc it feels so boring on re-read.

(This is the continuation of my previous comment.
Also, I have read the Little Garden arc only once in the manga but have watched it in the anime way more times. Last time was at least a couple of years ago though, so apologies for any inconsistencies 🙏)
4- Zoro: I found it curious you didn't talk about his attempt to cut off his legs, as it's normally a big deal for some people 🤔 Personally, I find Zoro's actions and conversation with Brogy while they are both trapped in the wax quite telling of Zoro's character. How a kid like Zoro (19 y.o.) could inspire a seasoned warrior like Brogy (158 y.o.). His newfound care for his nakama: Zoro has been a lone wolf for years, but now he will even mutilate himself to save his nakama (he didn't start taking action until Nami and Vivi started coughing or breathing hard, if I remember correctly.)(And he actually almost went through with it as we can see the blood dripping from his legs 😱). His trust in Luffy and his nakama: You briefly touched upon him striking a pose, but you didn't say how he only did it after Luffy came and assured him he would take care of their opponents without his help.
5- Usopp's ingenuity and quick thinking: Usopp and Karoo were amazing together. You briefly touched upon Usopp deceiving Mr 5 with his ammunition but in truth he even outwitted Mr 3 and took down his candle wax contraption. Also, (as far as I remember) he shot fire at Luffy on purpose to burn the Yellow Trap Miss Golden Week had put on his vest.
6- Sanji: After he was caught completely and utterly off guard in Whiskey Peak, Sanji realised that this journey is not all fun and games like he hoped. And so, his strategic and cunning Mr Prince persona is born; luckily we'll see more of it. Also, there's a reason he chose this particular nickname but it won't be revealed for hundreds of chapters. Lastly, I love how he initially answers the phone: "Um, what was it? Oh yeah... You've reached the damn restaurant" 😂 The only times he has ever used a phone was to take orders for the Baratie.
7- Luffy's struggling with Miss Golden Week 's powers was hard to watch but again really telling of his character: Even though he is very intuitive, he is weak against trickery, much more against hypnosis (like it was shown in Syrup Village with Jango). At this point, please note that Miss Golden Week 's powers are basically a type of hypnosis, not a Devil Fruit power (It was revealed in a SBS a bit later). Also, there's another level to the way Luffy instinctively knew who the real Mr 3 was, but it won't be relevant for many arcs still. Lastly, Luffy's and Zoro's relationship and camaraderie absolutely shone in that brief interaction: Zoro:"You need any help?"Luffy:"Nope!" Zoro relaxes and poses as a statue. Brilliant ❤

There are a few arcs that I skip thru on rewatch/reread and the main two offenders of that are Skypeia and Little Garden.

I think everything little garden gives us is stuff paid off later on. Not even just late game stuff but bits all threw out the story. You almost don’t notice it was all here until you look back.

I love One Piece, I hate Little Garden. its fine. IMHO Little garden is the lowest of one piece and the best part of it is Zoro being funny on that wax cake thing. if anything. I like that you are just being honest about that :D

    2.49.. thats it..
I stop the video, write this comment..
    This is crappy review.
Nothing about Little Garden is FILLER..
But i guess this is why people hate great but slow world building arcs like Skypiea, Thriller Bark, Fishmen Island, WCI, Wano..
Or short fun arc like Long Ring Long Land.
Because they are all literally what One Piece is as a story...
A silly adventures stories with great world building that setup and connect everything.
What is it with the Hypocrisy?
1st, people keep on complaining that Ussop's DREAM was too vague unlike other Strawhats.
Here in Little Garden we literally got not only another character development for Ussop buy also an update or further explanation for his dream. A clarification...
But somehow it was a FILLER!!!! Wtf?
2nd. We got more world building with how GrandLine work. Basic writing 101.. SHOW Don't TELL!
Here we had our protagonist who with US just recently enter a NEW bizzare world with its OWN natural rule of physics.
Here in Little Garden we got to learn more about the GrandLine, another reason why it was very scary and unpredictable.
This time its NOT the Government or Pirates like 7warlords or Giant Sea Kings or ridiculous dangerous unpredictable Weathers BUT the idea of stuck in a place where we dont want to stay when we got other place to go to.
Further development for the whole LOGPASS stuffs, the whole unique for GrandLine's navigation system..
And YET it is a FILLER??? Wtf?!
    3rd. Giants, Vikings, Dinosaurs...
    4th.. Strawhats crew dynamics...
Apparently there wasnt any good or important in this arc...
Despite it tackle Zoro Sanji rivalry and dynamic.
Further development on Zori, Sanji, Ussop and Vivi personality.
Zori with his RESOLVED, Vivi with her starting to learn more about the Strawhats,
Ussop with his dream and his LIES and
Sanji quick thinking and Mr. Prince personality..
Sanjinwas sideline BUT this was NOT the inly time where some of the Strawhats was sideline in an Arc.
In fact it was very typical for One Piece arc that aome Strawhats did not get a fight..
Seriously... Just stop reading One Piece.. why waste time?
There are other million story to read/watch.
4th.. more development for Baroque Work.
Despite it was a type of power level meritocracy inn the OUTSiDE, which is very typical of SHONEN manga/anime, but here we can see that its NIT always the case.
Despite Mr3 and Miss Golden Week lack of strength or raw power, they make it up with their special ability and intelligent/trickery.
But apparently this also a filler!!! Wtf?
    5th. Elbaf/Elbaph.. and their cultures
    6th Karoo loyalty to Vivi.
7th. Honor and resolve between real men/fighters. It even inspired weakling and scaredy cat like Ussop..
Somehow it was a filler too???
I read this arc in 2001 or 2002.
    Cant remember much..
But i guess since they are all FILLER, it doesn't matter...
