He created the Whole of One Piece just to use King Cobra! lol JK but very Tolkien since he just wanted a world where the languages he made up could live in.
Something i really love about Crocodile is how smart he is, his plans are actually so well thought. When he puts them in the cage and throws the key to the crocodiles, he's actually not giving they a chance because even if they find the key, it is not even the real one. And the same thing happens with the bomb, he has people who are meant to ignite it, but it that fails, the bomb is a timebomb itself. And i really love the Mr. Prince part too, how Oda ties everything about them not having known Sanji in any moment before
1:08:33 "No matter what this Mark on our Arm is the Symbol of our Friendship" then you see a Flash to ViVi being so Happy holding her arm. cant remember where exactly this happens but yeah i Cry everytime i see that scene.
54:00 this is what I love about Oda’s style is he will pose these questions and then he’ll explore the possible branches throughout the arc all while not giving a definitive answer on the subject, leaving it up to the reader to decide what they believe the answer is I’m surprised you never talked about the bath scene……(no not that one😂) the one where cobra bows and thanks the straw hats after saying something like “authority is something that you wear over clothes, there’s no such thing as a naked king”
The Happiness Punch moment is Nami to her core. It's Oda's moment that portrays that Nami understands her inherent skill set better than all of the others at this time in this Saga. We get a small glimpse of this the East Blue. Alabasta gives us a glimpse of how her skills were developed off panel while she spent your youth in the presence of Arlong. This development is demonstrated with her learning how she's maximized her more limited skillset over those with more robust skills. First, she's smart enough to convince Usopp to make the Clima-tact because she's fully aware of the limitation of skills. You may not like how the Clima-tact was first introduced, but it's used as a contruct of her actual skill set. She's given a flawed device from Usopp, but Nami figures out how to use her already established skills can overcome the devices flaws. This is Nami's core skill, she's resourceful, even given situational limitations. This is all done out the purview of her crewmates. So Happiness Punch is her showing her level of skill mastery to her crew mates in their presence. Nami is relentless in punishing those that underestimate her skills even in her most vulnerable situations. This is all done metaphorically in a comedic moment, but this is Oda's genius. It's all done in a very simple manner, but it's done within a manner that doesn't introduce in any tension between her and crewmates.
Alabasta is such a great arc Our crew takes on their first major adversary The marines through Smoker and Tashigi demonstrate the limitations they operate under Great action, comedy all tied together with an engaging plot Can’t wait for the next one
01:16:10 As AkahigeNoAmo has already commented: the 9-11 thing is probably not true. There's also another theory of Pell surviving that has to do with the original kamikaze pilots, which may sound more believable. In the end we have no confirmation of either theories. Also, Pell has eaten the Zoan Tori Tori no Mi model Falcon, which is not a mythical Zoan. He and Chaka are the royal family's bodyguards and the top military leaders of Alabasta (after King Cobra of course). Chaka has eaten the Zoan Inu Inu no Mi model Jackal. Since Alabasta is inspired by Egypt, Alabasta has always had the guardian deities of the Jackal and the Falcon, drawing a parallel with the gods Anubis and Orus respectively. The fact of DF users being called "deities" or "gods" is one of these discussions that are better saved for later. For now just know that both of them have basic Zoans and not mythical ones.
I love when you show clips of past videos 😁 And yes, let Mama Peaches join in! 12:12 Love the parallel! Don't know if it's true but Crocodile could have easily been inspired by Bond villains (Dr No especially). Also, Luffy is unable to stay down because he's rubber and rubber always bounces back. It's actually one of my personal favourite lines of his when he answers why/how he's still up: "Gommu dakara" (=Because I'm rubber). Luffy's relationship with his DF is one of my favourites in the series ❤ 18:40 Regarding the "D": "family" may be a strong word. You will largely find it being called the "D Clan".
@evelynarhondi6375 We had her all set to join in, and she had to back out for a medical reason. She picked an arc that comes after Skypiea to join in on. - Dad
48:10 Were you researching trying to remember where have you heard the name Pluton before? 🤔 With the recent uprising of OnePiece in popularity, it's easier to find info about *this* Pluton than the original one 😅 Pluton/Pluto was the Greek god of the Underworld (a counterpart of Osiris if you're better at Egyptian mythology). This specific reference will make more sense when you are further into the story, but generally, this is not the first time Oda-sensei is referencing greek mythology. There is an enormous amount of references to all sorts of cultures and languages and mythologies. He is truly a genius ❤ 49:30 Nooo, what things?? 😱 These highlights may be important! 👀 Was Zoro's awakening of [omitted] one of them?? You know, how he came up with Shishi Son Son and defeated Mr 1. What happened there is going to get more clear down the line, and it's one of the most important things in the series. What about Toto (Koza's dad) keeping his faith in his king and keep trying to dig up water in Yuba? Crocodile was being unnecessarily petty with his grudge against him 😅 Plus, Luffy wouldn't be able to beat Crocodile without Toto's force of Will backing him up; the water which saved him in the second face off was from Yuba afterall. How the people (small side characters like Toto) who meet Luffy and the crew are influenced and their lives change, and what this may mean in the end is also important.
I was looking for a short cut to explain Pluton while prepping for filming. I came across the Greek mythology references. Admittedly, I am not well versed in either Greek, Roman, or Norse mythology, much to my academic shame. Both of my sons know it forward and backwards. I am slowly realizing that Oda is drawing references from any and every culture he can, similar to Zelda. Noah and I are still trying to find our footing on how long these videos are and how much we should cover in one sitting. Sometimes, the prep work is exhausting. We are on the edge of taking something that should be fun and turning it into work. Our channel is a hobby. I am amazed at how kind, enthusiastic, and accepting the OP community is. I feel a sense of responsibility to get it right. I disappointed Noah (and clearly a lot of viewers) in that I didn’t cover the final five chapters of the Alabasta arc in this video. A week later, I asked him if we could film a five-to-ten-minute postscript on Alabasta after we completed filming on another movie. It turned into a 30-minute video that was a lot of fun. It will post next week. All of your comments are fair. All of the information you discuss is important. We are going to start filming OP content more often and edit them together for a longer episode. That will us to cover more in depth.
@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches You should not feel pressured no matter how nice or pressing our community may be! Most of us are just viewers who don't really understand how hard it is to make a video, especially a OnePiece related one. For us it's just fun, exchanging opinions and/or learning new things. And it should be the same to you too. Don't sweat the small stuff. I know I can't speak for everyone but, we are all here because we like your energy and watching your journey has been a delight. We will be here for shorter or longer videos. Feel free to forget or make mistakes too. Things like that are not what's important. Just like with OnePiece, have fun and be free 😊
Pell still alive is not a bad thing to me.because, no one except strawhats crew and vivi know he sacrifice himself, to strawhat crew he die like a hero because no one know he survive at that time, and to Vivi its a big relieve she not losing her big brother figure
I mean, when I first read that part I liked it, and thinking back to it I still feel pretty positively about that development. I get not enjoying it, but sometimes it feels like the fanbase made it a big Thing that always has to be talked about...
Yeah, yeah. I guess to me it's like an overused joke at this point; I don't mind the new people criticizing it, but when it's repeated over and over by older fans it's just...
There is a very early SBS about why luffy does not kill his enemies (i think this applies to characters in general). SBS below. Q: How come Luffy never kills his enemies? Throughout "One Piece" manga so far, he didn't kill Mohji and Helmeppo, but Axe-arm Morgan was killed by Zoro, why is that? Oda: Hmm! That's a very good question. First, I have to announce that Morgan is still alive. He's currently in jail, where he was placed by his former subordinates. Why doesn't Luffy kill his enemies? Because in that era, everyone uses their lives to fight for their dreams. For an enemy, when their dream has been shattered, it is the same as losing a fight, and as painful as death. I believe that, as pirates, killing or not killing is secondary to victory or defeat.
To be fair to Nami, Miss Double Finger has the Spike Spike Fruit, and her baton cannot take her down easily or protect her in any way. Reading the scene, I felt as if she needed to take a little time off in order to regroup and think about what she could do; she's not a thinking in the moment person like Luffy, and she doesn't have enormous durability either, so what she does makes perfect sense. I actually loved the introduction of the Climate Baton, because it proves how unique Nami's ability to predict weather is: she can use a party trick like a devastating weapon, to the surprise of its own creator!! Also, towards the end of the fight, fully puncturing her foot with the spikes just to make sure her final blow was delivered was such a cool and brave moment from her character. This is fighting to be my favorite combat scene of the arc 🤩🤩🤩
Also, love thinking about all the things that were skipped in this discussion, knowing the impact they have in future arcs... 😊 The fighting scenes themselves are incredibly interesting to me, because Oda is able to make them (especially later on) so narratively poignant, it's awesome!
I just remembered watching you guys' video when Noah introduced One Piece to Richard and the follow-up video where Richard watched the live action (i think he did?) and was wondering what's happened since then when the Algorithm™ finally led me back to y'all's shore. This time, I make it a point to hit subscribe. Love witnessing one's journey to One Piece and you guys are so hilarious and are very very insightful and a joy to watch. Eagerly waiting for Richard to witness Jaya and Skypeia. AND for Mama Peaches to join the shenanigans, too! Tangent: Love how this turned into the family affair that it's become. I similarly did it with my siblings because my friends growing up weren't into One Piece that much and I wanted to have someone to gush over it and it worked on my younger brother lol. Now we get to spend every chapter drop and speculate and spiral over how the story continues to blow our expectations. More people should experience One Piece.
Nice! really enjoyed the video. I do hope there will be a tiny bit more emphasis on minor power system detail going forward tho! Its such an interesting facet and a minute to point out some details would be amazing! For example in this arc its the GUN that "ate" the devil fruit. its a very early sprinkle towards future characters.
Man, this is quickly becoming my new favorite read through of One Piece. I’m so amped to see Richard’s reaction and feelings for the arcs to come. Alabasta is a beloved saga in the One Piece fandom but most people wouldn’t consider it to be the best or the worst. Just a good one. If he is already reading the series with this much intentionality and analysis then I think he will absolutely love this series like we all do. I can’t wait for his take on Jaya and Skypeia and for all the future arcs. Also, i absolutely love how he likes to read and then re-read the arcs. Lol strap in Richard, the Easter eggs and foreshadowing doesn’t just apply to the individual arcs and sagas. There are MANY things that are said and done in the east blue arcs that you do not understand fully until you get 1000 chapters in. The re-read of One Piece is in many ways even better than the first read.
1:03:37 Tashigis view on pirates is given to her by the world just like Kobys view of pirates. Luffys view taught by shanks crew chapter 1 "Pirates Dance and Sing And Adventure!!!
01:04:35 This may be important down the line: The Palace's elite squad took a medicine that was hidden and guarded by the Alabasta royal family for generations, which makes you much stronger and faster for a limited time but takes a great toll on your body. I don't know if Noah has made the connection (most people miss it) but this is not the last time we will see something like this. On this vain, the Nefertari royal family and by extension the people of Alabasta were also keeping hidden and protecting the Poneglyph. This is also not the last time we see something like this. Speaking of which, when Cobra tells Robin that the Nefertari family has been protecting the Poneglyph for generations, her answer initially comes across as mocking (them being weak has almost put Pluton in the hands of dangerous people). But after a certain relatively recent reveal, she may actually have been astounded by it (I can't talk more about this at the moment. Just wanted to point it out for future reference)
@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches ...Is this Noah? If it's Richard, I apologize for the minor spoiler 🙏 No, you didn't miss it! It's the "Hero Water" the elite guards have taken off screen in chapter 196. I was just wondering if you had made the connection with the other two medicines that have similar effects in two different future tribes that we see (Sorry for being vague, I'm just trying to keep it spoiler free)
@@evelynarhondi6375 This is Richard. I am sorry, I stopped signing my name in these threads. I usually sign "Dad." I am sure that Noah is aware of our running dialogue. He might even chime in, but he's busy this weekend. No worries on the minor spoiler. Mama Peaches watches the anime, so I've seen many parts of future arcs that make absolutely no sense to me. Now, I'm headed off to chapter 196 to see what I missed. I thank you for the assist! - Richard
Good video! Kosa is one of my favorite side characters. I feel like he is so overlooked by the fan base, but he's such a fascinating character with deep personal conflict and interest decisions. Great analysis. And yes! Momma Peaches for Water 7 pleeeeeaaaasssse.
01:08:00 About the mark: 1- This whole plan with the bandages hiding the true mark was all Zoro's idea. People tend to think of him as dumb but he's in fact pretty smart and tactical (I can talk in length of why people like that are wrong, but I have already overdone it with the comments today 😅) 2- I low-key dislike how they translate the word "nakama", since it does not mean just "friends", but something deeper and more profound. Like, Luffy and Koby are friends but not nakama. Vivi and the crew are nakama, not just friends. In truth she is asking if she's still part of the crew even if she is not actively sailing with them 😭 3- Lastly, this may be just my head canon, but there's definitely a connection between the "X" mark and the pirate flag: Most jolly rogers have bones crossed like an "X". Dr Hiriluk, who even had his own jolly roger even though he was not a pirate, wore the "X" mark on his clothes and even put it on Chopper's hat. Now the StrawHats use an "X" to mark themselves as nakama. There are also a couple of more instances down the line... I just wanted to point it out just incase it proves to actually be important later on 😅
39:40 I know someone else already commented on it but: Lassoo is a GUN that ate a Zoan DF. This is an extremely important detail that will need to more leads and revelations in the future. Also, what Richard took the trouble of naming here are all a series of attacks. They have nothing to do with the actual DF, which just turns you into a dog 😅 43:15 I think I am not the only one thinking that Richard's notes will be well received from the community 😊
This may be irrational, but I was extremely annoyed that an inanimate object could eat a Devil Fruit. It takes the suspension of disbelief to an entirely new level; but that could be applied to my entire OP journey to date. Since I grew up in the late 60’s and early 70’s watching the campy Adam West Batman television series, I decided to have a little light-hearted fun with the silliness of some of Oda’s creations by comparing them to the bat-gadgets. It was just a gag for a laugh. - Richard
@@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches Apologies, I misunderstood 🙏 But now I get your point 😅 About the various DFs, it's definitely Oda-sensei having fun (I think he had stated so himself actually 🤔), but inanimate objects "eating" DFs is something that will actually be explained later on. Please, don't be disheartened 🙏 There are reasons some things are the way they are, even if they seem pointless or goofy at the time.
I'm like 60% into the video so it may be mentioned later. But I'm surprised he talked about the Chopper/Usopp fight but didn't mention Usopp's moment of courage standing up for and being the first crewmate to outright declare that Luffy will be the king of the pirates.
@bfc10200 I didn't mention Usopp's observation about Luffy. When I read these stories, I often feel like I am drinking out of a firehose. There's SO much on a first time read. - Dad
wow this is so precious, father and son relationship sharing the love of One Piece! i wish i had the same bond with my father, but i know it is what it is. maybe one day when i have a kid of my own, ill share the love of One Piece with my future kids . haha. One Piece means so much to me, growing up as a kid, suicidal. lol xD One Piece saved my life, and guided me in many ways. hehe Peace n Love. ❤🙏😇Ps. Alabasta, is most definitely, one of my most favorite One Piece Arcs/Stories.. ❤🙏😇 Loved the Whole Video, subscribed, first vid i watch from your channel! looking forward to more! ❤🙏😇 can't wait for your pops to continue on with his journey in the One Piece World! hehe ❤🙏😇
I would maybe argue that the whole saga is an exploration of leadership in general, but I agree that the themes that Noah touched on are there as well.
33:53 Richard: "Zoro saves Smoker only because he was ordered to" Well... Yes, but it's not as simple as that imo. Zoro's loyalty was never up to debate and there's a reason for it. And that reason is not because he's heartless or because he can't think by himself. Each time Zoro chooses to follow one of Luffy's orders is because he can see where Luffy is coming from, even if it's not a choice he himself would initially make. Zoro and Luffy are more alike than people usually think; it's one of the reasons they mutually agreed to become nakama in the first place (Despite his initial refusal, Zoro is the one who joined the crew faster than anyone else). Zoro understands his shortcomings and strengths and he does the same for Luffy. That's why he knows when to follow orders and when to put Luffy in his place (The latter will be made pretty clear in the next saga).
@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches Thank you very much 😊 I'm loving your videos and discussions. Looking forward to a full family OnePiece discussion at some point 👀
@ Oda may be averse to killing characters, but Zoro is not. That was the thought behind my comment that Zoro was only following orders when he saved Smoker. For better or worse, I suspect that Zoro would have allowed Smoker to drown if left to his own devices. There’s an entire video we need to make discussing whether it is better to kill an enemy or simply defeat an enemy and show them mercy, such as Sanji did with Bon Clay. It has real world application. I struggle with going down rabbit holes such as this that move our discussions away from OP.
@@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches I see your point. It's just that, like most people, Zoro is also changing in time. At this point in the story, he's not the same person he was when he first met Luffy as he's not the same person as he is at the current point in the manga. New experiences and, especially, Luffy's influence have changed Zoro (and the rest of the crew) over time. Zoro is not the Demon of the East Blue anymore. He is not afraid of his emotions and he's definitely much stronger than back then. Also, Zoro and Sanji are more alike than they look or than they are willing to admit out loud. None of them would have finished off an already defeated opponent, but also both of them can be quite merciless depending on their opponent. Generally, I'm with Oda-sensei on the matter of death. For an author who "doesn't like killing off his characters", there is so much death and sorrow in this series that I am glad he feels that way.
About characters dying: it's rare and mostly happens in backstories like Kuina, Bellemere, Dr Hiriluk Sometimes, the fake outs have an explanation: Dorry didn't die because Broggy's weapon wasn't so sharp because of the century long fight. Igaram didn't die because Miss All Sunday didn't kill him. These two examples don't bother me in the slightest because the OP world is already filled with tragedy but when we follow Luffy's path, the places he leaves behind are better than when he arrived. It's a story about hope and adventure and we already have plenty of sadness and death irl. I don't need this aspect of the story to be realistic, my suspense of disbelief is on without an ounce of hesitation. I will gladly take these happy endings Now Pell is a bad choice. For all intents and purposes I consider him dead lol it was a sacrifice and there was no reasonable explanation 20:55 i hope no one here spoils what the D means 29:35 beautifully said 😄
Ah. Dad has reached the point where he finally has to face and come to terms with the fact that nobody ever dies in One Piece, flashbacks and meaningless unnamed fodder excepted. Get used to it, Dad. The sooner you do, the soon you can start to enjoy the story for what it truly has to offer! Oda just doesn't believe in killing characters just to make something a defeat a bit more impactful. It is a story about personal relationships and the things that make us who we are as much as it is about the crazy adventure, and death is literally the opposite of those things! It is just one of his quirks as a writer, or his aim for the story... I'm not entirely sure, to be honest. 🙂 But it adds its own unique bit of charm as any One Piece fan would be able to tell you!
@Aviertje I actually have accepted the fact that folks don't die, AND I'm enjoying it. You're the first person I recall mentioning it in that light. I'm there. OP bends and breaks a lot of storytelling norms. That's where the adjustment comes in. Always fun. - Dad
@@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches The situation with Pell is such that if it wasn't a 'we skim over the details' issue beforehand, this arc is where it gets raised. The fact you brought it up so strongly as a conversational topic early on in this video is what made me respond before I even reached the end where you actually talked about Pell! One Piece definitely breaks a lot of storytelling norms, sometimes leaning more into Japanese forms we are unfamiliar with, or it just invents its own by being a literal hodgepodge of everything under the sun. Somehow, Oda can make it work. His mind works in mysterious ways, courtesy of being an absolute workaholic who put all the work in a thousand times over!
I would also like to add that Oda takes the idea of death much more seriously than most authors. Death definitely exists in One Piece, but when death happens Oda understands the kind of effect that has on people and the world. He doesn’t use it lightly as a literal device or a plot point. I really appreciate that. If Pell had died here there would not have been a celebration of Crocodile’s defeat at the end of the arc, there would have been a solemn memorial. Vivi wouldn’t have been a joyful princess that was transformed by her adventures with the straw hats that was excited to rebuild her nation. she would have likely lost her innocence and optimistic view of the world. The irony of One Piece is that people frequently get upset about how there don’t seem to be enough stakes or consequences, but we all cry our eyes out when those stakes and consequences happen. See Nami, Sanji, and Chopper’s backstory as evidence. Oda can rip your heart out when he wants to, but he doesn’t until he needs to. I really enjoy that. Death is a huge deal in both life and One Piece. I just think we have all grown desensitized to it by other works of fiction and media. Looking at you Game of Thrones.
Ok now I am trough the video, always so much fun listening to both of you! I wanted to add something thats important to me as someone who loves Robin a lot I hope you had the chance to reread the chapter where Robin joins bc I will reference it, I really dont want to spoil anything :) Others may have mentioned it: Oda said in one FPS segment, that Luffy dont kill ppl, instead by winning the fight he shatter their dreams (like Crocodile cant reach his dystopia now) and a shattered dream is worse than death. Now remember the fight in the porneglyph room (i think it is a flashback about Robin talking to Cobra?). Robin said it was the last porneglyph known to her and it did not hold the information she was looking for, shattering her dream. Its why she cried. Which made her ask Luffy to just leave her there when the thing came down. When she appears on the ship (the chapter you may have forgotten or forgotten to read 😂 ) the first thing she said to Luffy was: you saved me when I wanted to die, take responsibility for that. Which I think is a very strong sentence on its own. If you make the connection - Robin is not okay, the same way Nami was not okay before Arlong Park. She is in s state worse than death according to Oda. And I love him for using his manga to adress stuff like that. In a reread/rewatch this changed a lot of my perspective following Robin centered scenes in future arcs. (I dont know if the english translation uses the same words bc I read in German and watch the show in japanese dub with subs and I noticed some differences between the manga pages you put on screen and the wording I remember so I dont know if this is confusing im sorry 😂)
I was on the fence about the popular interpretation of Kuina’s death (Zoro’s friend and rival from his childhood) actually being a suicide until I saw Robin’s scene when she lost her dream and wanted to die. Kuina had a dream that she considered impossible, and it is constantly reinforced in this series that that is a fate worse than death. Zoro reacted to her death as her “breaking her promise.” Now Zoro has taken up her dream as his own. Zoro could never defeat Kuina, so if Zoro becomes the world’s greatest swordsman then Kuina will be the only opponent he could never beat. I especially liked how in Zoro’s duel with Mihawk both of Zoro’s swords break (the same ones he used in the flashback with Kuina when they made their promise to become the greatest swordsman) but Kuina’s sword didn’t break. Almost as a poetic representation of Zoro’s will to pursue his dream was shattered, but Kuina’s wasn’t.
Damn i was looking forward to the Robin joining chapter she is my fav character of all time, got her tatooed in december (along with zoro). Robin is unintentionally the funniest straw hat to me too, noah gets it, im sure of it😂
I enjoyed your analysis, but I recommend not bunching Jaya in with skypia, there is a lot to the arc and your going to want to take your time with it. Also skypia is one of my favorite sagas and I think the theming there is fantastic
The reason why Oda doesn't like killing off characters is because he doesn't like the idea of not being able to use that character later in the story. It's also the reason why he's become more comfortable killing characters as he's gotten closer to the ending of the story.
Sorry, I'm a yapper 35:10 yeah Luffy is pretty interesting. We know he has a pretty strong will to achieve his dream and become king of the pirates. And yet he doesn't use all means necessary. He has a set of principles and he would be ok if his decisions happened to cause his death. He always tries his best and he would have no regrets. That was shown in Loguetown and he is consistent. He doesnt hate Smoker even if he's an obstacle 41:44 at what point did Dad stop reading? I would recommend always reading the arc closures as well. They are beautifully wrapped up. Oh ok, he did. Yeah, there was Bon Clay's sacrifice. Had Sanji not spared him, that wouldn't have happened. The flower of friendship bloomed and friendships may form very quickly Anyway, amazing video. It's so nice to watch the discussions, a lot of interesting points. I will be eagerly and at the same time patiently waiting for the next one 1:19:46 exactly, Son (lol. Im sorry, who is Noah and who is Richard?). I also feel like the people who dont like Skypea are mostly anime watchers, and probably because of the pacing. It's not as great as some other arcs, but its far from bad. Same with the following one. It's fun but it was ruined in the anime
@oznek_m Never apologize for a long comment. We love them. Richard is on the left: a blue t-shirt, older, wiser, and better looking. Noah is the other guy. - Dad
Not sure if this is a hot take, but: Jaya & Skypea are one connected arc, and so are Water 7 & Enies Lobby. The fandom splitting them in two just because they go to a different island is wrong.
No, you're right. I've always viewed it as act one of the skypeia story. Though doing one video for both Jaya and Skypeia might be too much so I think it's fine to split them up that way.
Recording shorter sections is a good idea, I think. It also leaves more room for guesswork on dad's part about how arcs will develop, which I used to love in your earlier videos. So please do Jaya separately! See you later, bananagator!
Since Dad likes the courtroom boogie, may I recommend showing him the 'Jango's Dance Carnival' animated short that accompanied the second movie? It is an adaptation of the 'Jango's Dance Paradise' cover story that happened between chapters 126-172, and it is hilarious for what it is.
@@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches It looks rather dated and the song used is an obvious 'let us promote this artist' tie-in (or vice versa?), but for how early it came in One Piece's commercialization where most of the movies sucked and fail to feel like One Piece due to being treated as quick ways to make a buck, this little extra is definitely a stand-out gem for its era.
I cannot definitely say where the story could have gone, if Oda held on to the thought of finishing op in 5 years..which includes Alabasta... but going by that, the hardship our crew faced, is kinda parallel to the Endgame in Oda's mind, isn't it? they do escape death, cz Oda wanted to do more..but there is something here..
Regarding the fights in Alabasta, I would like to emphasis that the pacing has been made in order to not have a succession of fights. There is a fight, then it is cut to see vivi moving in, sneaking, reaching the castle and so on. So, when in Arlong park, or vs Krieg, Captain Krow or vs Mr 3, the fights were all stuck together and it was a bit boring. I consider that Alabasta is the point where Oda considers that fights are useful (and great)(in a manga), but a succession of fights is boring, so he made things differently, and that's really pleasant.
Nice video. I just finished reading Skypea for the first time (only had watched the anime and never got back to read the manga) and I want to see your thoughts.
28:06 Japanese authors in general, and Oda-sensei especially, love puns. "King Cobra" is not a pun you can easily let go off 😂 Also, fyi, Cobra was married into the Nefertari family. The original ruler by right was his late wife Titi, Vivi's mom (we see her picture on Vivi's desk at some point towards the end) 30:25 Why would we think you are an idiot for talking about the Cover Stories? 🤔 Please, feel free to talk more about them 😊 Also, in said Cover Story we see Jango befriending Fullbody and joining the Marines together. Did you notice them at the end of the Alabasta arc when they arrived together with Captain Hina? Cover Stories are amazing 😍
As for the 7 warlords of the see and Luffy saying he's the 8th is a pun in Japanese language. It is Shichibukai(shichi would be 7 in this case) and Luffy says he's not one of Shichibukai but a Hachibukai(hachi - 8) "If you are 7 warlords then I'm better than you I'm the 8 warlords" just because 8 is more than 7 to emphasize his superiority XD
Maybe spoilers? 1:16:17 I like the discussion around Ace’s tattoo. Taking a symbol that is known for oppression and recontextualizing it. Very Sun Pirates
It’s funny that you mentioned a character in one piece being unpleasant to look at. Because even as a kid, I thought these characters looked crazy. I believe that’s one of the reasons people did not give it a shot. Before it got so long. I’d like to see your opinion on characters that are “unpleasant to look at” as they develop more. You go from what the fuck am I looking at? Too Goddamn, I don’t care what they look like. There story is incredible! Shout out, señor pink
Yeah, no, if you read the end of Alabasta, you did so whilst falling asleep... Your reaction to Mr. 2, Hina, The Straw Hats saying goodbye to Vivi and Karoo and obviously Robin's introduction as a crewmate don't really compute otherwise.
@maxpower2480 🤣 We recorded a video about the end of Alabasta (chapters 213-218) last night. It was fun. It should post around the 30th. It was meant to be a short but ended up at 30 minutes.
While the timing on the Pell death->not death is very close to around the time of 9/11, there is no confirmed reason that his survival is related to that. So it's good that you mentioned the possibility of it being a rumor/wide-spread rumor, because is the truth of it.
43:45 Every arc there's a certain point where I totally disagree with Richard 😅 This time is Nami's fight. Nami is not a fighter. Running to hide from two professional assassins who are out to get you is so understandable, logical and normal, it would be totally out of character if she did otherwise. Afterall, Nami, Usopp and Chopper don't call themselves the Cowardly Trio for nothing (on oppose to the Monster Trio who is Luffy, Zoro and Sanji). Also, taking your time to prepare and think tactics is a good thing, definitely not something to be looked down on; especially for a non fighter type like Nami. 44:10 I think you (just like me) hated how the comic relief regarding the Clima Takt lasted as long as it did; and not that you actually hate it overall. Making a couple of wrong moves while familiarising with a new weapon is fine, but it definitely didn't need to be dragged as long as it did. But I absolutely love the Clima Takt, and what it represents. How much Nami and Usopp relate to one another, how much Usopp understands and trusts in Nami's abilities, how creative Usopp can be. Usopp, the Clima Takt and Nami are all amazing ❤ Too bad it didn't feel like it for Richard here 😕
"I think you (just like me) hated how the comic relief regarding the Clima Takt lasted as long as it did." YES! That's absolutely correct. You described it better than I did. - Richard
34:37 Luffy is a nice Simple Guy Smoker hasnt hurt any ofnLuffys friends or made him Mad. they Fought yeah but i think to Luffy Fighting is like Breathing.
I'm 99% sure Oda called him King Cobra just for the pun 😂
He created the Whole of One Piece just to use King Cobra! lol JK but very Tolkien since he just wanted a world where the languages he made up could live in.
I mean… Captain Morgan is right there too. 😂
Half of the written words in OP are puns practically , Oda loves them!
Prince part too, how Oda ties everything about them not having known Sanji in any moment before
my favorite moment from Alabasta was when Luffy came in catching Vivi saying that he can hear her voice.

Alabasta is such a great arc
Our crew takes on their first major adversary
The marines through Smoker and Tashigi demonstrate the limitations they operate under
Great action, comedy all tied together with an engaging plot
Can’t wait for the next one

Luffy's relationship with his DF is one of my favourites in the series ❤
18:40 Regarding the "D": "family" may be a strong word. You will largely find it being called the "D Clan".

@evelynarhondi6375 Yup. She's good. Feisty as ever.
48:10 Were you researching trying to remember where have you heard the name Pluton before? 🤔 With the recent uprising of OnePiece in popularity, it's easier to find info about *this* Pluton than the original one 😅
Pluton/Pluto was the Greek god of the Underworld (a counterpart of Osiris if you're better at Egyptian mythology). This specific reference will make more sense when you are further into the story, but generally, this is not the first time Oda-sensei is referencing greek mythology. There is an enormous amount of references to all sorts of cultures and languages and mythologies. He is truly a genius ❤
49:30 Nooo, what things?? 😱 These highlights may be important! 👀
Was Zoro's awakening of [omitted] one of them??
Again. Seeing you go into this deep.. is just beautiful 👍
Glad you enjoy it! We're having a lot of fun digging in-Noah
53:10 Crocodile " This Country will be Destroyed by the LOVE FOR THIS COUNTRY!"
"Alabasta wo mamoru! Alabasta wo mamoru!" Chills, every time 😭
To be fair to Nami, Miss Double Finger has the Spike Spike Fruit, and her baton cannot take her down easily or protect her in any way.
The fighting scenes themselves are incredibly interesting to me, because Oda is able to make them (especially later on) so narratively poignant, it's awesome!

01:08:00 About the mark:
1- This whole plan with the bandages hiding the true mark was all Zoro's idea. People tend to think of him as dumb but he's in fact pretty smart and tactical (I can talk in length of why people like that are wrong, but I have already overdone it with the comments today 😅)
2- I low-key dislike how they translate the word "nakama", since it does not mean just "friends", but something deeper and more profound. Like, Luffy and Koby are friends but not nakama. Vivi and the crew are nakama, not just friends. In truth she is asking if she's still part of the crew even if she is not actively sailing with them 😭
3- Lastly, this may be just my head canon, but there's definitely a connection between the "X" mark and the pirate flag:
Most jolly rogers have bones crossed like an "X".
Dr Hiriluk, who even had his own jolly roger even though he was not a pirate, wore the "X" mark on his clothes and even put it on Chopper's hat.
Now the StrawHats use an "X" to mark themselves as nakama.
There are also a couple of more instances down the line...
I just wanted to point it out just incase it proves to actually be important later on 😅
39:40 I know someone else already commented on it but:
Lassoo is a GUN that ate a Zoan DF. This is an extremely important detail that will need to more leads and revelations in the future.
Also, what Richard took the trouble of naming here are all a series of attacks. They have nothing to do with the actual DF, which just turns you into a dog 😅
43:15 I think I am not the only one thinking that Richard's notes will be well received from the community 😊
- Richard
@@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches Apologies, I misunderstood 🙏 But now I get your point 😅
About the various DFs, it's definitely Oda-sensei having fun (I think he had stated so himself actually 🤔), but inanimate objects "eating" DFs is something that will actually be explained later on.
Please, don't be disheartened 🙏 There are reasons some things are the way they are, even if they seem pointless or goofy at the time.

Luffy s instincts about ppl are always right, always.
I cried many times just watching you talk 😂
About characters dying: it's rare and mostly happens in backstories like Kuina, Bellemere, Dr Hiriluk
Sometimes, the fake outs have an explanation: Dorry didn't die because Broggy's weapon wasn't so sharp because of the century long fight. I will gladly take these happy endings
Now Pell is a bad choice. For all intents and purposes I consider him dead lol it was a sacrifice and there was no reasonable explanation
20:55 i hope no one here spoils what the D means
29:35 beautifully said 😄
Always fun. - Dad
@@PorkChopsRiceandPeachesLord of the Rings style
Looking at you Game of Thrones.
if you didn't know already bon clay's design is actually inspired by Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber.
Ok now I am trough the video, always so much fun listening to both of you!
I wanted to add something thats important to me as someone who loves Robin a lot I hope you had the chance to reread the chapter where Robin joins bc I will reference it, I really dont want to spoil anything :)
Others may have mentioned it:
Oda said in one FPS segment, that Luffy dont kill ppl, instead by winning the fight he shatter their dreams (like Crocodile cant reach his dystopia now) and a shattered dream is worse than death.
Yes Mama Peaches lesssgooo!!!

Damn i was looking forward to the Robin joining chapter she is my fav character of all time, got her tatooed in december (along with zoro).

@@JesseblueXai it's coming. We're filming the Robin joining chapter tonight. My bad. - Dad
@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches 🤣 dont worry about it but I am looking forward to it ❤️
I enjoyed your analysis, but I recommend not bunching Jaya in with skypia, there is a lot to the arc and your going to want to take your time with it.
Also skypia is one of my favorite sagas and I think the theming there is fantastic
8:25 yea!
water7 is real!
lets go!
The reason why Oda doesn't like killing off characters is because he doesn't like the idea of not being able to use that character later in the story. It's also the reason why he's become more comfortable killing characters as he's gotten closer to the ending of the story.
Sorry, I'm a yapper
35:10 yeah Luffy is pretty interesting. He doesnt hate Smoker even if he's an obstacle
41:44 at what point did Dad stop reading? I would recommend always reading the arc closures as well. They are beautifully wrapped up.
Oh ok, he did. Yeah, there was Bon Clay's sacrifice. Had Sanji not spared him, that wouldn't have happened. The flower of friendship bloomed and friendships may form very quickly
Anyway, amazing video. It's so nice to watch the discussions, a lot of interesting points. I will be eagerly and at the same time patiently waiting for the next one
1:19:46 exactly, Son (lol.
- Dad
42:35 he puts a Hand out and then Axe Kick to the head. lol
LETS GOOOOOOOOO
Leggoooooooo🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

@@Aviertje we'll have to! I didn't know that existed, so I'll have to go watch it now! -Noah
Let's go ❤
5:20 lol The Clocktower fooled Tons of people. lol
13:12 lol i can see the Qui gon idea. He wqs rebelious with the council and often did what he felt.
"I don't think anyone dies in this series"
The monkey paw curls once more.
I got it! Mama Peaches, Rice Jr, and Papa Pork Chop 😎😂

Yes bring mama peaches !
Nice video. I just finished reading Skypea for the first time (only had watched the anime and never got back to read the manga) and I want to see your thoughts.
28:06 Japanese authors in general, and Oda-sensei especially, love puns. "King Cobra" is not a pun you can easily let go off 😂
Also, fyi, Cobra was married into the Nefertari family. The original ruler by right was his late wife Titi, Vivi's mom (we see her picture on Vivi's desk at some point towards the end)
30:25 Why would we think you are an idiot for talking about the Cover Stories? 🤔 Please, feel free to talk more about them 😊
Also, in said Cover Story we see Jango befriending Fullbody and joining the Marines together. Did you notice them at the end of the Alabasta arc when they arrived together with Captain Hina?
Cover Stories are amazing 😍
I hope you'll make a review of Jaya on it's own, even if it's a short one just so nothing gets skipped. I like more and more as time passes.
@@rac_coun we will be, after I re-read it i told Dad we have to make it it's own video -Noah
As for the 7 warlords of the see and Luffy saying he's the 8th is a pun in Japanese language. It is Shichibukai(shichi would be 7 in this case) and Luffy says he's not one of Shichibukai but a Hachibukai(hachi - 8) "If you are 7 warlords then I'm better than you I'm the 8 warlords" just because 8 is more than 7 to emphasize his superiority XD
ya would love to have mama peaches on for water seven saga

It was meant to be a short but ended up at 30 minutes.
lol Party ClimaBaton is Hilarious
