My wife and I made our second visit to Germany last December. It is now easy to see why my grandfather fell in love with Germany and the people, even while fighting his way to Berlin in WWII. The food and historical sites are incredible and the people even more so. I can't wait to go again.
@For Truth you are correct of course. Americans had to hold back and let the Russians take it. He did however fight all the way from Normandy across to "near Berlin". Along the way he fell in love with the wonderful people of Germany and had a lifelong desire to return and visit when not being shot at.
@@jorgemiller8994 most of the places Grandpa was in had seen heavy fighting and were torn to pieces. Two things that amazed me were his description of how clean and organized the German people were. He said that as they were fighting their way out of the far side of town, the people on the side of town they came in on were already out cleaning the rubble from the streets and trying to start the long process of rebuilding. He was amazed that they were so tough and resilient they didn't let anything slow them down. Another thing that caught my interest was him talking about the trucks that brought up rations, ammo, etc. He would let the ladies of the town have their rations and they would fix meals for everyone, including potatoes, carrots, whatever they might have on hand. I asked him why he wasn't afraid that the locals would poison him. He said he was never worried about that because the people were almost happy to see them coming through as that meant the war was possibly coming to an end soon. When they were ready to move on to the next town they were supposed to burn everything they couldn't carry. Grandpa never did, instead leaving it to the locals so that they, at least for a while, would have food. In a nutshell it was their strength of spirit, even after all that they had been through, and the kindness they showed him and his men that left a lifelong impression on him. He wanted very badly to go back and see Germany after shipping home, but Grandma wouldn't leave the US and he wouldn't go without her. I made my first trip to Germany many years ago, and the second last December. I went there anticipating that I would love it, as my grandpa and I are a lot alike. I found exactly what I was expecting and so much more. I was raised by my grandparents, so part of the trip was for me and part was in memory of grandpa (died of cancer before I went). I had my DNA tested and have learned of a large number of ancestors who were from Germany, and also England & Scotland, with a small number from Ireland and France. I suppose it was in my blood so to speak, although I didn't know it on the first trip. My wife and I laughed a lot because people would stop and speak to us here and there in Germany and Austria. If they approached her they always spoke English. If they approached me they spoke German. I am semi-retired now, so we can come for longer than two weeks at a time on the next trip. I would really like to rent an apartment for several weeks so we have a home base, and rent a car so we can see more than just where you can get on a train. Last December we flew into Amsterdam for our second visit to that great city, then took the train down to Haltern am See to a friends house. He was in Germany twice in his military career and just loved it, and was back over working as a civilian contractor last year. He had a car and we went to a number of Christmas Markets, most notably in Cologne and in Celle. Celle was the type of smaller city/town that I had envisioned when grandpa would tell stories of this time there. When you are born and raised in a country as young as the US it is amazing to see buildings and homes that were in use long before your own country was even officially formed. Mr. Miller, I don't know if you are fortunate enough to call Germany home, but if you live elsewhere and have not been I urge you to make the trip. My wife and I have had the pleasure of traveling in 7 European countries since that very first trip to Germany. We love seeing the historical sites, museums and other attractions of that nature, but the real joy of travel for us is meeting local people. Most Europeans are far more reserved than Americans, and their encounters with many Americans who have come through are that they are rude and arrogant. I can certainly understand why people would be a bit reserved, but we have also found that once engaged in conversation, and once they find out we do have a genuine interest in their lives and learning about the local culture, the vast majority of people open up right away and are both happy and proud to teach you about the country. Our best times and best memories of travel are invariably of the people we have met. The best places to see or eat are always a result of getting off the beaten "tourist path" and to the places they have recommended to us. There is so much more in this world that unites us than what divides us. Happy travels.
Hehehe that sounds a lot like my great-uncle talking about his time on the eastern front "I quite enjoyed my time in Stalingrad, just the lead content in the air was a tad too high"
@James Clark It is nice to see that you enjoyed your trips to Germany. I was born in Haltern am See and still live in this beautiful little town. I think it’s a good idea to rent an apartment and a car, so you can visit more beautiful areas of Germany. The public transport is okay, but some places are easier to travel by car than taking the train or bus. I think you’re right that most people here a reserved, but when you get to know each other better they will become more and more open. I have to admit that leaving the tourists paths is more interesting because you get to know the local people and they can show you more of the sightseeing’s and restaurants to go to than any tourist guide can do. I hope your next trip to Germany or Europe will be as good as the ones you had (and traveling will be as much fun as before the Coronavirus appeared). I hope my English from school is not to bad and you could understand what I wrote and ment?

In most parts of major cities like Berlin, Duisburg, Hamburg or Frankfurt for example, you may feel like you were visiting a middle eastern country, as muslims are absolutely dominating the inner cities. This is NOT an overexaguration...

There are three street foods that I really miss in Germany. 1) is the gyros. 2) is these little finger size sausages on little rolls that are crunchy on the outside but oh so soft on the inside. And 3) is the pizza with salami instead of pepperoni. My absolute favorite is probably the gyros.

It depends on the place you get food or drinks, not the country! What's your logic to do this comparison? Just your (or your friends) experience is not a useful way to prove your statement man
@Contrarian DC seems you are the nazi then considering your racist remark
@dismalrealm Exactly my thought friend , you die if you worry , you die if you don't , so why worry ? Some people need to chill .
@Contrarian DC Idiot
Not only is German food delicious, look how clean they are with the food!
to mainmajo
English: what the fuck?! what are you even talking about? next time stfu you filthy individual!!
German: was zum teufel?! wovon reden sie da bitte? nächstes mal einfach die klappe halten, wiederwärtiges subjekt!!
it HAS to be clean lol, when there is not everything clean, you can lose your "license" and are not any longer allowed to sell food on the street.
watch indian streetfood, it's much cleaner. Lol
Indian streetfood? A glass of water will probably kill you, unless you've trained your immune system by drinking from a toilet bowl for six month ahead of the visit. A scientist has found 200 different type of bacteria in just one single glass of water in Calcutta - and he didn't even need a microscope to see them, for christ sake!
***** dude ever heard of sarcasm.? Hehe
Germany ...Germany ...I miss you so much! I miss this Yummy street food - Love from India.
for everyone who's wondering, in Germany it has to be very clean at these places. unless of course you want to lose your job and get problems with the state. we're always like this sooo :3 xD
thats true, the hygienic regulation are very high and often checked.
Yes.
you´re right with the rules, though you probably haven´t seen the "clean places" i saw and din´t eat there. i live in germany and lived in spain too, i agree, the regulations are probably higher, but that doesn´t mean everybody fullfills these. :-)
Doktor Frankenstein well, most places are trying to be very clean. in case the state makes a visit and check if everything is fine. but yeah, compared to other countries it's very clean
yes, like te crepe lady, who is touching the money then put the banana slices in your crepe with same hand ;-)
Last time I was in Germany was back in 2016. Watching this makes me want to go back so bad! You guys are really lucky
Gawd I miss living in Germany. Loved the many fests that you could go to. The street food was the bomb
Four of the best years of my life spent in Germany, such awesome people and delicious food. I would love to visit there again: very friendly, helpful, and generous! Oh yes, and they are excellent drivers too!!!
I really love the german food. Much respect from Denmark 🇩🇪🇩🇰
And i as a german fell in love with your little hotdog stands with the red sausages and the fish your country has to offer.
Jeg elsker æbleskiver og Risalamande!
Best quality in the world. Respect from Sweden.
Germany and Japan are the two countries I want to visit in my lifetime.
You're welcome in Germany buddy

Holy hell this makes me want to make bratwurst. I absolutely love German food and music. My grandmother is German but she made a lot of Polish food as well.
Ancestors are from Northern Germany
is it possibl that your grandmother Comes from schlesien ?The part of Germany that was given to poland after second world war ?
David DeBergh my mother is from Selesia, she made lots of lebkuchen, potatoes cakes and spiced biscuits...
One thing I miss after moving to the UK from growing up in Germany - the street food!
currywurst, rindswurst, whole chicken on the spit, fries, great beer i enjoyed it all when i was stationed in west germany in the 80s.. good times great food.
that food looks delicious my great grandparents were from Germany and I always wondered what kinds of things they eat or do over there this video is great
Feel like i've missed so much, only true Deutch thing i ate when i was in Germany was Curry Würst and Apfel strudel, would have loved to see Big BBQ's like that.
At my Army Unit in Germany, during every overnight shift, we would take turns doing a "schnitzel run", to the local "Schnell Imbus" truck.
It's "Schnell Imbiss"* but fuck yeah for the Schnitzel run :D
Yeah I really loved the schnitzel sandwiches. Always on good brotchen
ah the good old schnitzel run
haha cheers from germany
It is amazing, that food changes every 100 miles in central europe. that much different between north, south, west and east europe

@@chrisgray3650 how do you know? No one mentioned it in the clip. Btw most of the signs were reading "bio" which is called "organic" in English. (Btw, while you type this on your phone or computer...just think about the kids, mining that lithium, cobalt, etc. Better stop using those services)

Germany has quality and honest business running through it's veins for the majority, it's no wonder the country is leading the world in many many ways.
I MISS THE STREET FOOD. I lived there in the 90s for a couple years. Yummy.
Moving to Germany now

@It is called the CCP-Virus 😂😂
The Germans have a great collection of street food, it’s always a highlight to visit their weinachtsmarket (Christmas market) and taste their delicious variety of streetfood.
My personal favourite are their mushrooms, those are sooo so good
fried Champignons (or button mushrooms?) are the sole reason i attend our yearly summer fair

Ay bro, try zwiebelkuchen with mushrooms, you will not regret it
Hope it survives with all the pressure of US-Junkfood-chains......

2 is most likely Mettenden
There used to be a little schnitzel stand outside the gate at Ramstein AFB. This video makes me miss the curry wurst, schnitzels...it makes me miss all the good times and good memories. I have got to get off my dead ass and go back to Germany one of these days.
Wish i could visit this amazing country 😀
just lovely: healthy, clean, tempting and delicious, I'm sure

Hi
I spent 3 years in Wildflecken Germany in the 70s the street food was so good i make it today, absolutely best food ever, even the tater salad
German wursts are delicious. I had them daily when i was there on a vacation years ago. And the guys in Berlin were really cute keke.
firstly, your nonsensical rantings have no relevance to this video. secondly, I'm not even from china. you can go ahead and screw yourself.
''wurst''? i told an american this word and he didn't understand. probably they say ''wien'', i think.
Braschi Giovanni Angelo in Germany we say „Wurst“. Or what did u. mean?
@@hughjass5034 i repeat again. i was speaking with an american young . he did not understand the word ''wuerstel'' (or ''wuerst'') i sayed ''geraman susages'' and he understood.
Do you really have the impression that everything is so clean? I never thought about that. We have a lot of regulations in Germany. I was just surprised by the reactions. :-)
Being from the US, I don't trust street food here. Don't get me started on the cross contamination..
I saw the cook handle food and money with no gloves....
I think its more than just regulations.
It's also the culture and mindset of the people. Its different from the US.
@@jonson856 well without the restrictions the food would be still made more clean than in the usa but not us clean. heaving once the status from beeing a anclean restaurant and you are done ....

There certainly is a more diverse and interesting offering than there was on my first visit to Germany in 1966!
I love German food. My x mother in law was an amazing cook. So delicious. Would love to go to Germany
So it's ok to love German cuisine, just not their men (or women)?
I am an American woman who lived in Northern Germany for ten years before moving to Sweden with my Swedish husband. I can assure you that I nearly cried while watching this video because I miss this so profoundly!
