I was raised by my grandma ( from Germany ) , oatmeal cooked in milk, cinnamon toast and some sort of fresh fruit always made my brother and me happy campers! Big breakfast on the weekends of eggs, toast, sausage, fried apples and dill pickles made my day. Yes pickles!
I'd actually say that it's very common to have toast for breakfast. Maybe not on its own, but we usually have a basket with bread, bread rolls and toast on the table.
In every hotel in Germany breakfast was usually cold cuts, hardboiled eggs and fruit. Sometimes they had waffles or pancakes and of course there was that wonderful hearty black or dark brown bread with a choice of butters like the one you described.
A soft boiled egg (with soft egg yolk) is more common for breakfast in Germany, not hard boiled eggs. But hard boiled eggs are easier to handle for some hotels, that is the only reason to offer them almost hard boiled..
As an Aussie of German descent, we always started the day after "milch "time with "farmers breakfast " we are a community bound by faith and good food. God bless
I lived in Wuerzberg Germany in the late 1990s. The breakfast was so good and filling, going to work was too difficult, but then there was lunch to look forward to and then dinner! Wow, what was there not to love being in Germany? But, I wonder if things have not changed as it has in the USA? Maybe someday, we can revisit again?
My grandmother was born in Germany in 1899 and emigrated to the States in 1911. Seeing videos like this make me feel closer to her and my culture. I actually visited Germany in 1993 and it was wonderful. I didn’t get to see her hometown since it was a part of Russia by then. I long to go back to Germany and see it proper and just wander around. I would love to try a certain pastry from there. I think it’s called....a “bee sting” cake?
I am glad that the videos bring back the memories. Bee sting cake is delicious and it's a must try, if travelling to Germany :) so please put it on your "to try" list ;)
@@cooking-the-world I will DEFINITELY do that. There is an authentic German restaurant in my city where I live. I want to try it when the COVID-19 restrictions are not so harsh. I suddenly remembered some of the foods my grandmother used to make. My favorites were rouladen and potato latkes. Thank you so much for the reply. 😊
My father's mother would often serve my dad Bauernfrühstück for lunch when he returned home from school to eat lunch. He loved Bauernfrühstück to the end of his days. It always reminded him of his mom.
@Vote Him Out -- The essential ingredients were a boiled potato from the previous day and a couple of eggs that only partially beaten. Beyond that, she used whatever leftovers were available -- meat and/or vegetables. Kevin Byrne recipe: www.lecker.de/deftiges-bauernfruehstueck-29471.html Wash potatoes and boil in water for 15-20 minutes. Afterwards, rinse and peel. Let the potatoes cool down 2. Peel the onions. Dice 1, cut 1 into rings. Finely dice bacon. In a large pan without fat let it crisply drain. Add diced onions and fry briefly. Remove everything. Fry onion rings in bacon fat until golden brown and take them out 3. Cut the potatoes into slices. Heat clarified butter in bacon fat. Fry the potatoes for about 10 minutes until golden brown. Turn from time to time. Add 2/3 of the onion and bacon cubes to the potatoes, season 4. Whisk eggs and milk, season. Pour over the potatoes and let them falter at low heat. Occasionally push together a little with the spatula 5. Wash the chives and cut into small rolls. Arrange farmer's breakfast. Sprinkle with rest of bacon and onions and chives. 6. Drink: cool beer
Mostly we eat bread or bread rolls rolls with Nutella, cheese, salami or ham, as mentioned. On weekends we also serve every kind of egg like scrabled eggs, fried egg and cooked egg. Sometimes you also get fried bacon strips, croissants, even bagles. But those are less common. The other meals are more like a regional thing if you know what I mean - espically the sausage with pretzles are a bavarian tradition. :)
My dad is from the Husum area and I love the fresh rolls, ham and cheese along with other spreads like spun honey or fig jam. On the side might be some yogurt and fruit. So delicious!!!
Do people really eat pancakes and waffles for breakfast? In our family we had pancakes for lunch (filled with sausage, onions, ketchup) or dessert (with cinnamon sugar and applesauce). Waffle baking were something very special, like afternoon cake with extra fun. For breakfast we always had bread, butter and jam (on Sundays also cheese, cold cuts or ham, eggs and grapefruit with sugar)
The bauernfrustuck must be old dish! My grandfather born in 1919 told me about it. He loved it. Bacon, onion, potatoes and eggs. He was mixing them with everything like big scramble with potatoes. The name stayed with me. I was wondering when he took it from. We are from western Poland, Polish, but my Grand grandparents speak German very well.
Western Poland was German-speaking at the beginning of the 20th century, so if your grand grandparents spoke German they were born in Germany, that become Poland later on. I am also half Polish and as far as I know, it is not that common in Poland to fry potatoes. But I might be wrong:)
I lived with a german family for a year. Breakfast was always a slice of a nice bread topped with cheese, sliced meat, and butter, or topped with nutella instead. I miss those breakfasts.
Oh, I am sure you can get those ingredients wherever you live right now. Or is that too complicated? I guess getting German bread would be the biggest problem...
Thanks M J. I am sure you have also something else for breakfast than just coffee, right? I am just reading Camilla Lackberg crime novels and she was mentioning buns for breakfast. Is that right? Or she made it up? 🤣
Cooking the World Im sorry to say that I haven’t read Läckberg but now I’m going to do that for sure. Bun (bulle) in Swedish can be translated both to a small non sweet bread (brötchen i german I think) or a small sweet bread.
The best part of a German breakfast is the German Roll - crispy on the outside and soft on the inside - and the crust has to be able to be cut very cleanly - no tearing - I’m surprised this basic part of a German breakfast was not mentioned.
I love muesli and yogurt 🥰 I have a dear friend who is German born but she’s vegan.... I still really enjoyed this video ❤️I think Germany is a beautiful country

Only about half was correct. I am German, born and raised there with family in Hessen , Bayern and Baden Württemberg. Waffeln and pancakes are more lunch or afternoon snack, Weißwurst mit Brezeln is more dinner or lunch. Big part are boiled eggs soft in middle served in an eggcup, breads and Brötchen as well as jam , Wurst those are breakfast foods. But waffles and pancakes are not. Sweet rolls , pastries all those can be breakfast food.
For the Bauernfrühstück (the potato dish), normally onions, diced/sliced gherkins are added. Maybe tomato and bell pepper as well. Leftover meats can go into it as well. And liquid egg stirred into it. At the end sliced pickled red beets added. The dish you've shown is rather a nornal "Bratkartoffeln" with an egg on top. And waffles & pancakes are more common to be eaten in the afternoon. But maybe it's a regional thing.

Nothing better like a German breakfast. I try to keep the tradition in South Africa. And there are so many ways having a German breakfast. Different region like north or south different breakfast.
These are all great weekend breakfasts. During the week, however, Germans are as busy as Americans, and meals are grabbed on the go. Kids might eat a bowl of cornflakes (generic word for all those boxed breakfast foods) and a cup of yoghurt, Adults grab a cup of coffee and a bit of bread with a slice of cheese and cold cuts on it, perhaps a banana.
@@nancysoboluesky2145 Germans are as busy as Americans. Think of Americans who live away from the cities, and you will find your parallel. While not every village has a bakery, nearly every town does. Many of the local bakeries are family owned, and make bread from scratch. I can go to the market in the village where I live and get breads that are still warm from the bakery. Alternatively, I can go to the next town (4 miles) and get bread from the bakery, where the baker is the family father, and his wife works at the sales counter. Breads come in many varieties. White bread is uncommon except in bread rolls (brötchen). Mostly breads are made with a variety of cereal grains like rye, whole wheat, dinkel, greenkorn, and others. The grains are mostly ground a bit more coarsely and are heavier than the light and fluffy American breads. Here is a pic that is similar to the bakery counter in the town next to me. www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.de%2Fpin%2F631700285203671871%2F&psig=AOvVaw0ebVG1ShBMTK1Iv78BOcU0&ust=1602401179105000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAIQjRxqFwoTCJCp-9u_qewCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAJ
The concept of the chocolate slices on the roll was not so strange to me. In the Southern US nothing beats a hot, fluffy buttered biscuit with chocolate gravy (sauce) on it. So easy to make and we eat it like a breakfast dessert.

Our breakfast consists of meat eggs, potatoes, waffles, at times, pancakes or fried toast in butter. Homemade marmalade or apple butter other, honey. Cereals, Grits, oats. We even like trout for breakfast, we do breakfast for morning noon or night
Buckwheat pancakes with chopped cranberries added too batter with butter and Maple syrup after cooked . Hot coffee always.
Your voice is so sweet that something is avoiding my energy to get drained and feel less hungry! From a french chef!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Gute erinnerungen 🥰
Ich vermisse das Nusshoernchen und den Wasserweck mmmm lecker
Great video! Very informative!
What a great breakfast. Thanks for sharing
wonderful video....when is was in Munchen..I had the white sausage and brown bread every day..also the liver dumpling soup...German food is wonderful
Ohhhh... liver dumplings! Wow! How did you like them? Not everybody is a fond of them as far as I have heard, but I love them. Here in Frankfurt we serve them bacon sauce. Deliciousness!
@@cooking-the-world omg I loved them so much had them every day in Munich..tried to make them came out ok no German restaurants in my area so sad
Hope you are safe in Germany! I want to eat this and try Kaba!
Which flavour of Kaba? Vanilla, banana, chocolate or strawberry?
Thanks dear, I believe that at this point, those who stay at home and follow the rules, will not get infected. I really hope that more people will finally understands that the less they go out the sooner it's over. Be well!:)
Me too 😥
Kaba is like Nesquick.powder form too.in Germany at Aldi or Lisl stores they have like Nutella kinda spread and it's made with almo ds call Belmanda and another one called Belnouga it's made with creme caramel filling mixed with choc spread OMG that is very delicious.if you ever go to Germany and when you go back Home pack good in the Goodies.Milka Chocolate and Ritter Sport so many different flavors.its to expensive here Lindt Chocolate is pricey here too.Aldi is okay but can't compare with the choices over in Germany.
Most time we eat Müsli or simly Bread swear with Honey, Jam or Nutelle in Breakfeast. The "Bauernfrühstück" or "Weißwurst" we only eat sometimes on Saturdays, Sundays, also Eggs - we eat it on Sunday breakfast but not regular on working days...
add - or bread with cheese/Wurstaufschnitt - dont know the english word for it...
Nothing better like a German breakfast. I try to keep the tradition in South Africa. And there are so many ways having a German breakfast. Different region like north or south different breakfast.
Thumbs up for keeping the traditions! 🤩
Wunderbar und kostlich
Chocolate on bread. OMG! A breakfast dream come true.
zum frühstück gibts es ne stulle brot mit butter wurst und käse.
oder was vom bäcker...
was für bratkartoffeln.. vielleicht nach 2 promille nacht
Jeder ist halt anders.
You missed Hackepeter which is raw ground pork with salt, pepper topped with onions on a white bun called Schrippe
Just out of curiosity - is that not lunch time meal?
It's for second breakfast at 9am
Thanks for sharing.
thanks for sharing your breakfast i like your video.i eat bread and milk shake or simple pan fried bread with tea also use pickle
Bircher Müsli ist interessant. Ich werde es auf jeden Fall mal probieren.
Super! Es lohnt sich auch mal die Geschichte von diesem Gericht zu lesen. Das traditionelle Essen kann so spannend sein!
Not all Germans r very busy. Probably the ones far from the cities r not busy. What is German bread like?
I love to have German breakfast at Motel Frankfurt in Dornbusch on Eschersheimer Landstraße...Great motel with a separate breakfast room...I’ve been going there since the 70’s!
I think it's good to learn what other countries have for breakfast... Thanks
Great video, very well done :D
Thank you so much ☺️
I really miss leberkäse mit brötchen baked fresh every morning.
Delightful video!
This looks so delicious,i'm hungry now 😋
omg..those German pancakes look yummy!
Love your accent and the choice of food
Polish accent, I think
@@connyapfelbaum4498 Not a German accent, that's for sure. I assume it to be some kind of eastern European accent as well.
Love the fried potatoes with eggs. I make them myself sometimes.
I love breakfast, and that sausage, I could eat that whole, and a nice cup of coffee. Yummmm.
My daughter is in college here in the USA. She has already been to several other countries but none in Europe. Last night we were talking about traveling after this COVID-19 is dealt with. She said she wants to go to Germany first as far as Europe goes. I asked her why- she said, "it just seems so cool there". So maybe we will send her there after she graduates next year. I'll show her this video so she knows how to eat like a local, which is very important I think. Thank you for giving us these valuable tips on German cuisine.
You are welcome Chris. I am sure that she will like Germany. Keep in mind that the country is very regional and so is the food. Oh, I am so excited for her!
@@cooking-the-world The fact that you saw this and replied means a lot. So we will send her next year. Stay safe and healthy and Frohliche Weihnachten to you all.
Thank you, and you also stay safe and Frohe Weihnachten:)
This food looks so good!!!
I love it so much ❤️
im Irish like Germans a good breakfast means great bread and superior butter(sausages and eggs would be aight lol)
Would you eat soda bread with salty butter for breakfast?:)
@@cooking-the-world oh yes I make brown soda bread..normally fry it up in bacan grease....something to dip my eggs lol
@@kieranlindsay1220 Oh I wish I could try Irish Brown Soda Bread one day. I hope that the situation will change soon and we can travel for food again!
I would love to have a German breakfast!
Wonderful!! Oh, and chocolate is never wierd... :)
We have eaten most of that at home in one form or other over the years. I live Australia but my heritage is German . My forbears came.out in the 1840s to the 1850s.
Well done. But shame I couldn't inspire you :)
Don't worry when l am able to l like to cook with these things. Nothing better than to eat this food when l have the chance . I am not on the farm.anymore so to even access the ingrediants is very difficult.
Kaiserschmarrn? The only breakfast my Irish American wife would eat on our honeymoon in Bayern. I, on the other hand, am a fan of ALL brown foods!!
Nice .
Thank you!
Nice video and great videos, but where did you leave my Weißbier? *cries in bavarian* and I'm not even german.
Next time!
Bauernfrühstück is always with leftover potatoes from yesterday.
And that makes sense;)
German food really agrees with me.
😂
I have never heard of someone eating waffles or pancakes for breakfast, these are desserts, despite that its actually authentic.
Hahaha! We have quite often waffles and pancakes for breakfast. Maybe our family is weird like that :D
No wonder why almost 40% of the USA are obese.
@@wmf831 My work week never ends and therefore I treat myself every day with my favourite breakfast and I get up at 5am to make sure I have enough time to prepare it. I actually eat everything that I showed in the video, depending on what I am in the mood for. Just waffles we have on Sundays because my husband Matthias makes the best waffles with powdered sugar in the world:)
Oh !have you ever tried Chicken and Waffles!?for Breakfast it's a new Thingee now .My Kids love that with Maple syrup.Food preferances sure changed over the years.I stay with my Basic German Breakfast even in Florida .now and then I do have my Kid cereal.Lucky Charms ,🙄
@Felix The name of the video is WHAT GERMANS EAT FOR BREAKFAST. She states in the video she is from Frankfurt, GERMANY. How did the USA and Americans get into this??? LOL
Making me hungry, and miss Germany.
Hopefully this crazy time is over soon and you can go back to Germany to eat all you want and miss 🤩
Laugen broetchen mit butter und Rinder Salami, cervella ,dazu gibts auch duene Gurken Scheiben,Tomaten ..und Blattsalat..humm..
I just love your reply. Lot's of love ❤️
You haven’t taste it, so you cannot day how it tastes. But if it’s boring, clearly you should stick to your breakfast choices. Everybody deserves to eat good food ❤️
@@cooking-the-world you are such a sweet person. Please put up some vegetarian dishes.❤️
Super.
obviously i am not a german anymore 😄 cause under the week at 6 am in the morning i dont have time for such a breakfast , and on the weekend i prefer to sleep longer 😅
It's not the food that makes you German, dear :) and it's always matter of priorities (says somebody who wakes up at 5 to make herself a good breakfast:)), I know you can do it.
Your face is so pretty and your accent is sweet 🙏 thanks for posting
that dish that could be eaten for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, in America is called a 'Hungry Man Breakfast' and it is usually put on a foot long Italian bread (at least in NY)
Sounds like something that I would have to try when I am there:)
@@cooking-the-world 😁 👍🏻
I was born and raised in Kempen bei Krefeld in the early 50's and can assure you that this is UTTER BULLEN SCHEISSE.
Oh i love Kempten, I spent my holiday every year there. Such a beautiful area with so much great food. I love Allgäu!
@@cooking-the-world → Kempen bei Krefeld ist nicht Kempten. An der Holländische Grenze.
I LOVE fried potatoes with onion and eggs if I have meat all the better!! And yes I could eat it also for breakfast, lunch, and supper
The shown "Bauernfrühstück" isn't really a "Bauernfrühstück" it's just "Bratkartoffel mit Spiegelei". For a "Bauernfrühstück" you also add Liverwurst, blood sausage and pickled cucumbers into the pan onto the potatoes and even the egg come over these. Some also add cheese.
