When Mason came here , specifically to learn to play , the "haters" came out of the woodwork . I (and many others) thought it was a bold move and we should give him a chance . But , you know , most players spend their lives trying to be the best players they can be to make it to the AFL and then there's this "blow in" being handed this opportunity that they were struggling for . I can see their point but , on the other hand , the game deserves to go international and this is how you do it.

Great points brother! I can see it from both sides BUT I agree more with your point that Mason DID make a BOLD move leaving a 6 figure job AND basically blowing off all the money spent on his education to chase a sport he knows NOTHING about in AUSTRALIA which he also knows nothing about and will have no familiar faces to turn to. On the flip, Mason suffers boos n hate while he struggles to understand the game when there are those who have been training round the clock only to watch an outsider stroll in and take their spot. I get it...Im absolutely enjoying learning more about Footy(love that I nailed that one😀😎!!!) and also am grateful for all of your help Mikey!! You are a naughty boy Johnny. In my long description of the game, I told you that when you take a mark, (catch) you can play on or stop on the spot and take a kick. That’s what he did, he took a mark then had a shot for goal without anyone interfering with him. There is no such thing as a field goal. It’s just a goal whether you kick it on the run. or stop on the spot, it’s still just a goal.
A contested mark is in a contest with other players also trying to mark the ball. A mark that is not contested is when you take it out on your own with no other players around.

Pretty sure the first American to play AFL was Jason Holmes. He played AFL for St.Kilda. There was also a Canadian Mike Pike who played for Sydney. You really need to watch something about the rules. There are a number of videos that have been produced by the AFL. Once you understand a little better you will appreciate the game a lot more. It's a game of nonstop action for 100 minutes. Nothing like you have ever seen. Players are SUPER fit. Keep in mind this game has been played here since 1858. Most people outside Australia find that hard to comprehend. They tend to think AFL is taken from other sports when in fact Aussie Rules has been around long before. Anyway enjoy the ride, you will see some things in this sport you won't believe can happen. ENJOY

As an American who's lived in Australia, there's a couple of things that need to be explained here. First is ANZAC Day. ANZAC (Australia New Zealand Armed Corps) day is like our Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, and Veterans Day, all rolled into one, so you know how important that is to celebrate the sacrifices the military has given.. To the fact that they take the day off for the ANZAC Day match, which has always been Collingwood versus Essendon, since 1995. It's arguably the 2nd highest attended game of the entire year, second only to the Grand Final.
It's a big deal and celebrated when you play your first major game of AFL Footy. It's an even bigger deal when you kick your first goal in footy. You're in rare company when your first kick of the ball is for a goal. Mason Cox, in his first game of AFL footy, in his first possession of the ball, kicks his first goal, ON ANZAC DAY. That's the equivalent of say, Michael Jordan hitting a 3-pointer for his first possession of the ball in his career, or O'Dell Beckham making his famous catch for a touchdown in his first game, on Veteran's Day. It's that big. That's why the commentators said "Could you believe that an American, in his first game, kicks the first goal, on ANZAC Day? That didn't just happen!!"
And then, that preliminary final. It's the equivalent of the AFC or NFC conference championship in the NFL. Winner goes to the Super Bowl while the loser plans for next season. Richmond were favorites to win that game, especially as they had a record of 28 straight wins at the MCG.. You saw what happened, and what impact Mason had. It even made the news up here, and got a lot of people into the AFL, especially since off the back of his work in that game, Collingwood got to the Grand Final.

  • @mikeythehat6693

Yep , " Footy" is the colloquial term . "Footy" is used waaaaaay more than any other term . We only use "AFL" or whatever when talking to outsiders , where we have to be more specific . In everyday conversation though , it's just Footy .
"VFL" is like the minor leagues . Every state has it's own league . AFL is the Australian football league , VFL is Victorian , you have the SANFL (South Australia) WAFL (Western Australia) well ..... you get the picture . So when a player is rested from the AFL or have to return from injury or whatever they usually make their way back to the AFL through their local state league. Usually but not always , it's not like a rule or anything.

I can understand the reaction Mason got when he came over completely green to the sport, the people in the AFL have been playing it literally since they were old enough to walk, and have honed their skills to the highest level, it was impossible to think that any athlete could just walk into the sport and succeed at the top level.
The fact that he pulled it off just makes him even more amazing, frankly.

A contested mark, is essentially a catch within a pack of players. If you mark a ball, you are free to kick or handpass without fear of interference.
6 points to a kick between the big sticks and is a goal, and 1 point if kicked either side between the shorter sticks.
A scoreline that reads 15 .10. 100, 15 goals kicked, and 10 points. Added together make 100 points.
    Hope this helps

Catching the ball on the full is really important in Aussie Rules . We call it "Marking" the ball . Any catch (Mark) will earn you the option of a "Free Kick" or an unimpeded kick , where you can't be tackled . So Marking the ball within scoring distance is a hero move obviously. (also "scoring distance" is completely arbitrary) Usually within 50 metres or less is considered "scoring distance" . If you mark within 50 you can have a free shot at the goal . A "goal" will get you 6 points . In that first shot of Mason , he marked the ball right in front of goal , which was also his first ever touch in AFL , then he scored . It was pretty cool.
Watch any youtube video on "best Marks" .

A ruckman: At the beginning of a game or after a goal is scored the ball is taken to the centre of the ground and the umpire bounces or throws the ball up in the air and a player from each team - usually the tallest players on the ground - jump up to try and get the ball. Basically like a jump ball in basketball. The players who contest these "ball ups" are called "ruckmen". (Something similar happens after other stopages or the ball rolls out of play, but the umpire throws the ball up or back into play at the point of the stopages.)

The oldest and most popular leagues are notably in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. These leagues act as feeders into the Australian Football League (AFL) where the professionals play.

Probably you’ve had time to find these answers but: if the ball has been kicked over 10m and caught, it’s a “mark” so you get a moment to settle yourself and kick it without the opposition tackling you. You get longer if you’re taking a shot - usually within 50m.
The 6 points are a kick (has to be kicked) between the two centre posts. If you hit a post or go between the outside and inside posts, you get a point (a “behind”)
A ruckman is the tall bloke who jumps for the ball and tips it towards his players.
A contested mark is just where you’re jumping up for the ball at the same time as an opposition player.
Finally, mate, we have another game. NRL. This one is “rugby league” and a different, fast paced game to rugby with far, far more in common with NFL.
We recently had Todd Gurley over here posing for pictures with Nathan Cleary, the Mahommes of the sport. Get into some NRL if you get a chance mate.

Don't worry pal! You're learning. It's great to see.
    Footy? Yes!!
VFL is like Triple A baseball. AFL listed players who don't play in the senior AFL team play VFL.
A mark is a catch from a kick that travels 15mtrs or more.
A contested mark is catching the ball against one or more opponents who are attempting to also mark or spoil the player attempting the mark.
If you take a mark in general play, you can either stop and take your kick or handball, or play on immeediately. if you stop, you have approx. 8 seconds to dispose of the ball before the umpire calls play on and your opponent can then attempt to tackle you.
If you take a mark and the umpire adjudges you're within goal scoring distance (usually anywhere inside or around the 50mtr arc) you get 30 seconds to kick at goal. Very similar to a field goal.
If the ball goes between the 2 middle posts, it's a goal and worth 6 points. If it hits the popst, or goes between the middle post and the lower outside post, it's a behind and worth 1 point.
    Collingwood's final score was 15 7 97. That's 15 goal (15 x 6 = 90) + 7 behinds (7 x 1 = 7) for a total of 97 points.
    Finally (Lol), field positions.
There are 18 players on the field - 6 in defence, 6 in the midfield and 6 forwards.
At the start of each quarter and after every goal, the ball is bounced in the centre of the ground and the two opposing ruckmen attempt to hit the ball to the advantage of their midfielders.
In general play, if a stoppage of play occurs the umpire throw the ball up, and the two ruckmen will contest the ball.
Also, if the ball goes over the boundary lines, the boundary umpire will heave the ball over their shoulder (with their back to the field), and the two ruckmen will contest the ball.
It sounds complicated, but it makes sense once you watch a game.
Check out the AFL best of the decade. Goals, marks, bumps and tackles. You'll love it.
Keep enjoying our great game champ!

The initial goal scored on Anzac day was scored after he "marked' the ball. A player can take an unimpeded kick from the place where he marked the ball. There are only what you call field goals in the game. The only way to score 6 points is to kick the ball through the two large upright posts. A player who has the ability to regularly mark the ball within scoring distance is highly valued.

As mentioned, each State had its own league ... the VFL being the Victorian Football League. In the early 90s, the VFL expanded into Rugby territory (New South Wales) by moving the South Melbourne club north and renaming them Sydney. They then changed the name to the AFL and have since built a national game with clubs representing most States. The State comps continue and support development for players on their way to the AFL or for those our of form or on the fringe etc. It's probably like the minor league teams in baseball to a point. It was not expected that he would adapt as quickly as he did. For the Aussie kids who grow up playing this, giving Mason this opportunity seemed kind of unfair I guess. There were haters and supporters but here, they tend to show the negative side. Plus he plays for the Magpies, the team everyone loves to hate so that was also a factor. Kicking the ball through the centre is a goal ... 6 points but either side is a point. If it comes off hands or the opposition and goes through the centre it is also a point. When you take a mark (a clean catch from a kick that has travelled at least 15 metres) you can stop and take a kick unimpeded or play on. Here he chose to take his free kick and kicked a goal ... it was ANZAC day - (Australian and New Zealand Army Corp) - so kind of funny for an American to kick the first goal. The ruckman is the tall guy that goes up for the ball when the umpire bounces it or throws it in from the boundary. Have you watched "What is AFL"? It answers a few of these questions ... (and fuels lots more) LOL! There are also some great marking compilations and goal kicking montages out there as well as individual highlights. Enjoy the journey.

A mark in AFL is awarded when the receiving player catches the ball on the full from another player who has kicked that ball at least fifteen metres. A contested mark is when at least one other (opposition) player has also attempted to catch or punch away that ball in the air. Most marks in AFL will be contested marks due to the quality of the players and their high fitness levels. When awarded a mark the referee blows his whistle to indicate it so, and the player must then immediately play on or else play stops as the player lines up behind the point or line where the mark was made to make a free kick. For a free kick an opposition player stands on the mark or point where the mark was made and all other (opposition) players must be at least ten metres (I think) away from the player (kicker) until he either kicks the ball or moves off his line to the mark. Recent rules also only give the kicker thirty seconds to kick the ball before the free kick is no longer valid and normal play resumes.

Because he marked the ball (caught the ball on the full from another player's kick) he gets to go back and take the kick for goal.

Mason got a free kick after he marked the ball. A mark is when a player catches the ball that was kicked over 15 metres without anyone else touching it. He kicked the ball between the two middle goalposts for a 'goal' which is worth six points. A contested mark is when two or more players jump for the ball, and one player gets a clean grab. The first player from North America to play in the AFL was a Canadian born Australian. There are a lot of Irish men and women who regularly play in the AFL.

If a player kicks the ball through the two middle post's it is a goal a goal is worth 6 points if the ball goes through between the big post and the small outside post it is a behind and is worth 1 point.

They didn't mention Masons best skill , trash talking. LOL A contested mark is where you take a mark over an opponent , rather than out in the field by yourself . When you take a mark you have the option of going back and taking your kick or playing on . If you are mid field and wanting to move the ball quickly and your opponent isnt in a position to stop you then playing on is the best option . If you are within goal shooting range then you are best off to go back and take your time kicking the goal. One aspect you may not be aware of is that the man on the mark , the position on the ground the opposition player has to stand on according to the umpire , has the opportunity to try and put you off . Imagine having a free throw and there is some guy there jumping around and talking to you trying to put you off. They let you know if you missed to. LOL
