I say this in nearly every American's reaction to Mason's story (disclaimer: I'm an American, lived in Australia for 2 years, and have been following the AFL since 1994). One thing about Mason's Debut is this. ANZAC (Australia/New Zealand Armed Corps) Day is our Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, and Veteran's Day all rolled into one. And that game, which since 1995 has always been on a Monday and Collingwood versus Essendon, is arguably the second highest attended match of the year (second only to the Grand Final). Basically, the entire country all but stops for that game.
Additionally, while each team's players always celebrate a goal with each other, it's always a special thing when it is that player's first goal. It's even rarer when it is that player's first kick and first goal...
Mason Cox, in his first game, in his first possession and touch of the football, kicked not only the first goal of the match, but his first goal, let alone the first goal an American has kicked in the AFL, on ANZAC Day. That is the equivalent of say, Randy Moss or O'Dell Beckham making one of their famous catches for a touchdown, and that being their first ever possession and score, in their first game, on Veteran's Day or Thanksgiving. That's huge. That's why the commentators were shocked and saying "Can you believe that AN AMERICAN, in his first game, kicks the first goal on ANZAC Day? That didn't Happen!!!"
Oh.. and that Preliminary final when he played his heart out? Think of that in NFL terms as the NFC or AFC division finals: The winner goes to the Super Bowl, the loser plans for the next season. As Richmond had won the Grand Final the year before, they were heavy favorites to not only win this match, but win the Grand Final as well. You saw the result. Not only were his parents in the crowd (they flew in from Dallas that day), but news of his performance made it to the papers and even ESPN here in the US.

The thing is about that 2018 Prelim final, Collingwood were going in as the massive underdogs, like David vs Goliath type underdogs, everyone expected Collingwood to get belted of the park. Cox and Collingwood as a whole played one of the most dominant finals in recent times against a team who hadn't lost at that venue for something like 18 straight games. Cox was unreal that game.

    Hey mate, collingwood member here.
We have heritage hatred from the days when collingwood supporters were the Blue collar fans. But now that the number of fans equals income for the club we became one of the biggest. Then they put in a cap on not only player salary but club salary too.

Mason is in my team, the Magpies but we just call them the Pies. I call Mason American Pie but with love. It took him 4 years before he got to play first grade and he didn’t give up. Then when he made first grade he was awful and a lot of people wanted him gone. He finally got it and shut them up. When he played his first semi final his parents flew out to watch. Not sure what they thought of more than 90,000 loud fans in one arena but they smiled a lot. Mason is 6’ 9”. You always know when he is near the ball or has it. The crowd chants USA which is funny. Yes, our sense of humour is as warped as the commentators. Mason had to read some really nasty stuff about himself and he never stopped trying or learning. It used to make me mad because all of players had been playing since they were kids. He had never seen a game until he got here. He knew he was never going to be a basketball player and he chose the oldest game of football in the world. You have no idea how hard training is to become an elite athlete. To run for up to 90 minutes but still keep all of the skills you need. It isn’t a game you can learn fast and Mason did great to become good enough in the time he did.
My Dad was a Rugby League player, a Hockey player and a road cycle racer. I went to watch him play Rugby. He taught me the most important things about sport. Don’t kick a player when they are down was one. If someone does something really good in any game. It doesn’t matter if they are on the other team, you cheer for them. I remember doing that at an ice hockey game in Canada. The local team was way ahead and someone on the other team made a great goal so I cheered. The man behind me hit me on the head with something hard. Then he refused to sit near me for the rest of the game. He needed to talk to my Dad.

Its 6'11" and yes it is Kangaroo skin.
Mason is a genuinely nice bloke and we play in the first game this Friday.
Late in 2019 he suffered a serious eye injury, when he went to get the detached retina operated on, it was found that he also had it in the other eye. So in late 2019, early 2020 he was virtually blind while he recovered and it was only in the last few games that he fully recovered his full eyesight. We, Collingwood supporters, cannot wait for him to make his mark on Friday night.
You might as well join us in joining the Collingwood Magpie.

Collingwood is the most hated team in the AFL (Australian Football League) unless you follow them of course. Mason Cox is still playing for them. He just became an Australian citizen a couple of months ago. I'm from Melbourne and agree he's picked up our accent. I wouldn't bet on Collingwood winning the championship this year. They've played in the most Grand Finals, but lost the most by far. The joke is they've got the 'colliwobbles'. I'm a Richmond (tigers) supporter and we've won 3 of the last five premierships!!!

Unfortunately a sherrin football isn't kangaroo it's cow hide lined and are machine-stitched it's a common mistake because the sherrin logo is a kangaroo and are printed on the ball, they come in two official gameday colours,
Red for day games and Yellow for Night games to make it easier to see.
Mason has a lot of potential its a shame he wasn't born Australian because he shows glimpses of brilliance yet it shows he didn't play Junior afl.
When he is in form it's hard to compete with him he's one of if not the tallest player in the comp with long lanky arms that when extended up just dominates a marking contest and can be a great kick for goal,
The issue is he has trouble reading the flow of the game, a skill you normally pick with a life time of playing Junior's and can still be very inconsistent but considering he only started learning the game in 2014 has shown he's sporting prowess.
He's first game is the biggest day on the AFL calendar out side the finals, ANZAC day is our Memorial Day for the Armed forces of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
Im a Richmond supporter and he's Preliminary Final in 2018 will forever haunt me , he dominated the marking contest and made the Best rated defense in the game look like they were lost in a field.
I have huge respect for the big guy for never giving up when the world around him wanted him to fail, Yet I also have a hatred for him as well for the dominance he seems to show against Richmond in recent years and if I ever meet him I'll tell him exactly that...
With everyone hating Collingwood it's more like hate is too soft a word as for many it's a pure, white-hot loathing for everything that is Collingwood due to how the AFL evolved from the VFL (Victorian football league) with still today 10 out of the 18 AFL team's are in the state of Victoria with 9 in Melbourne metro/suburban areas, it was a sort of Suburban warfare mentality and over the 1920s and 1930s, Collingwood captured six of its 14 Premierships and the hatred is passed down through family's and is still being taught today it's nearly tradition now to hate them and the Collingwood fans love it.

To help narrow it down a bit for you and point out a few teams to make note of, what sort of sports teams do you normally support? Like the big wealthy clubs, the consistent contenders or the underdogs.
Also some of the best players currently in the game which would be good to watch and might even help you choose a team aswell would be: Dustin Martin (Richmond)
, Patrick Dangerfield (Geelong), Nat Fyfe (Fremantle), Lachie Neale (Brisbane), Marcus Bontempelli (Western Bulldogs), Christian Petracca (Melbourne), Patrick Cripps (Carlton) and Nic Naitanui (West Coast).
I'd also recommend watching this Cyril Rioli highlights video - The Deadliest: Highlights of Cyril Rioli. Rioli retired in 2018 at only 29 years old but is probably the most skilled player I've watched, with unreal hand and foot skill, footy IQ and athleticism. Even with him retiring early he had a bunch of individual and team success.

I will absolutely wait some time to watch and see who's play style I am most drawn to. As for teams, I support the Chicago Bulls (who are trash lol but I love em) and Manchester City (who are at the top of the table pretty consistently) so its hard to pinpoint what kinds of teams I like. Just the ones I have sentimental value for usually.
I have screen shotted your comment and will work through the players one by one over time. Thank you for your support!

@@AverageSportsFan I guess you could kind of take it in two ways with those teams. You could take it as teams with long histories who have been able to have success at different points over the years but who aren't necessarily the most wealthy with the most premierships and could say teams like Hawthorn, Geelong, Sydney and maybe even Melbourne.
Then you could also take it in the direction of teams who have bottomed out and were able to bouce back to be very successful. Since the bulls have a bit of a trend of the highs and lows of finishing places having been a joke just before the Jordan era. And then from what I've read Man City were pretty rubbish for a couple decades and getting relegated and then bouncing back and now being a bit of a powerhouse. In that case team you could definately go are could be Brisbane, Western Bulldogs, Carlton and I'm even gonna say Gold Coast even though they're the 2nd youngest club, and they've been a laughing stock in the league for a decade now but i feel with the young talent of players they have they're about to burst onto the scene this season in particular with the young player Matt Rowell just like the bulls with Jordan.
Sorry for having to read the novel I just wrote, but I hope this helps.

Also yes, you’re better off not going for Collingwood. Not all of them, but quite a few other team’s fans will not subscribe if you follow them. Even though I’m a biased Sydney Swans fan, I do know that many other footy fans respect them, so if you were to choose them, you won’t alienate too many other fans. Any of the other interstate teams are not the best choice, as the bulk of footy followers are Victorian. Many Vics have a soft spot for Sydney, as they used to be South Melbourne, and consequently they still have heaps of Victorian fans like myself, who used to follow them as the South Melbourne Swans.

Carlton and St Kilda are sort of orgninals too but they were introduced in 1897 a year later.
