Collingwood won the grand final last year, 2023, and he was the first American to do it. He still gets a bit of hate and can be quite cocky haha but he's come a long way

Yep. And he's able to feed off the hate.

Mason was the 2nd American. Don Pyke won a premiership (I believe 2) with the Eagles in the 90’s, but happy for Mason

@@darrenbath9160 incorrect, he was born in the States, but moved to Australia in his childhood, at least that’s my understanding. Mason spent more time in the US, so I understand the thinking.

FYI a Canadian with a simitar name, Mike Pyke, was a Ruckman with the Sydney Swans from 2009 to 2015, winning the Premiership in 2012.

Mason is still playing for the same team, Collingwood, and played in their premiership winning team last season. He is no star (although he has improved significantly since his early years - his last 2 seasons have been pretty solid), but is hanging in there, and plays a useful team role of reserve ruck/forward. I have enormous admiration for Mason in the work he has done, the adversity he has overcome, to make a career in the AFL - now 33, he has played 117 AFL games, which is a great effort for anyone (approx only 14% of drafted players end up playing 100 games, and the average career is only 15 games). Cheers!

He stuck to his guns and made the grade,Aussies love an underdog so he would be respected, He just joined the team everyone loves to hate. They did win the final last year 😊, however haven’t started too well this season

This video needs a huge update. Since it was made he’s undergone surgery on both eyes that affected his game, was going to be delisted until his first coach came back to the club and defined his role in the team better. Cox has now played over 100+ games, is a premiership player and a constant in the side. No he’s not a star but he’s a role player. Too many supporters forget this and give him shit for not starring, he does his job and does it well.

The loyalty works both ways. His form was patchy sometimes good, often not, but he stuck at it and worked his way back. But also the club showed loyalty to him. Stuck with him when his form was poor and gave him the opportunity to learn and grow. Both he and the club finally reached the ultimate success last year. A great story. It's also funny to hear an Aussie AFL crowd chanting U-S-A, U-S-A, ... and waving an American flag when he kicks a goal. He is well loved by the Collingwood family.

Yes he is still playing with Collingwood Football Club and the opposition players still target him in fact a while ago he got gouged in his eyes and has to wear special glasses every time he plays and one time someone stole his very expensive glasses...He has much to be proud of and has proved himself to be a true blue Aussie!

It wasn’t hate re Mason. If any Australian player wasn’t performing well for a team, it’d be the same. But like other players, Mason came through and played well. He’s loved by many here, well Collingwood followers lol. He seems a lovely young man. I’ve noticed I can hear a half American half Aussie accent a bit lately 😊

Hey D! You Americans should be proud of this Mason Cox. If our magnificent game ever captivates the US enough that the floodgates open and more Americans start playing in the AFL, then you all should know and remember that Mason Cox flew your flag here first.
As people have commented, Mason Cox played in the 2023 Grand Final (his second time playing in a Grand Final - first time was in 2018 but his team lost) and Collingwood won the AFL Premiership. That’s an achievement many players never get to experience in their entire AFL careers.

Mason plays for my team and he got hell for a few years but not from me. He never gave up, he never stopped learning, his coaches and his team never gave up on him. He was such a klutz at any sport but he was determined to learn and play this one.
Mason plays with prescription swimming goggles on because an opponent pressed their thumbs into his eyes and then dragged both thumb nails down his eyes. Both of his retina’s detached and that required 5 surgeries so he could see again. My youngest daughter was going through the same thing at the same time and it is frightening because you don’t get a promise of your sight back. Mason knows the wrong hit or knock can take away his sight for good so now I worry every time he plays.
He looks silly in the goggles but who is going to say that to someone over 7’ tall? He is a sweet young man and he won his Grand Final.

It was weird when mason kicked 3 goals in a final the Collingwood supporters started chanting USA USA and even some American flags in the crowd...he's far from a good player but it hard to defend against some one 7ft tall with arms up + jump is 12ft..if he contributes and marks and kicks 3 goals =(18 points )it can help the team win the game ..when total score could be 80 ..those 18 points( 3 goals) he kicks is almost quater of the teams score ..that's why he is picked to play.

He's in the best 23 still although on the outer edge of the 23. He doesnt get a ton of the ball. Usually 6-8 poessesions a game. But he plays with football smarts. He knows what he's doing.

Should see them go after his glasses. Turns out alot of his early problems were because he needed specs. They won it all last year, and this past weekend. He tried to do a bicycle kick.

Heya D. Typically the tallest players tap it down to the shortest after stoppages in play. These tallest players are the ruck and they tap it down to the rovers who are usually the hardest and shortest in the team. The ruck/rovers team up together at all the ball up and throw ins around the ground. Ruck players can get away with not having to be the most physical in the game. Playing in the forward to take marks and convert them to goals is a big step over just rucking tho. Check this vid for an insight into the typical injuries and grass roots nature of AFL in the southern states of Australia: ruclips.net/video/FPFWL1QFLdQ/видео.htmlsi=e5h1P2EEtLVToz2U

One big difference with AFL, rugby league and union and NFL are the pads buts players all codes still hurt. Other different is Paul followers and backs on grounds at the same time but with NFL defensive and offensive, kicking teams spacial teams how about ex afl player over to kickers in NFL.

@ReactionsbyD about the Football (Footy) Codes all of Australian Rules Football, Rugby League Football, Rugby Union Football & finally Soccer (Football), which are,
For those who DISLIKE &/or HATE any Football (Footy) Code/s with a real passion would &/or will say these,
(1 One) Australian Rules Football, is referred as Aerial Ping Pong Football,
(2 Two) Rugby League Football, is referred as Thugby League Football,
(3 Three) Rugby Union Football, is referred as Thugby Union, &/or Rugby Yawnnion,
(4 Four) Football (Soccer), is referred as Wog Ball and also both Fairies &/or Queenies Game.
    (NOTE) Aerial Ping-Pong
A jocular (and frequently derisive) name for Australian Rules Football (or Aussie Rules as it is popularly called). The term derives from the fact that the play in this game is characterised by frequent exchanges of long and high kicks.
The term is used largely by people from States both of Queensland & New South Wales in which Rugby League Football and NOT Aussie Rules (Footy) Football as &/or is the major football code. This interstate and code rivalry is often found in evidence for the term, including the early evidence from the 1940s.
1947 West Australian (Perth) 22 April: In 1941 he enlisted in the A.I.F. and joined a unit which fostered rugby football. Renfrey did not join in the &oq;mud bath&cq; and did not play 'aerial ping-pong', as the rugby exponents in the army termed the Australian game, until 1946.
1973 J. Dunn, How to Play Football: Sydneysiders like to call Australian Rules 'Aerial Ping-Pong'.
But on the other hand, for those and including myself who actually do LIKE &/or LOVE any Football (Footy) Code/s with a real passion would &/or will say these, which are,
(1 One) Australian Rules Football, is referred as the real Australian Football (Footy) Code of Australia,
(2 Two) Rugby League Football, is referred as the Greatest Game of All,
(3 Three0 Rugby Union Football, is referred the Game that they do Play in Heaven,
(4 Four) Football (Soccer), is referred as the Beautiful Game & the World Game & also the Real Football Code of course.
