The video needs a Part 2. Mason’s story has grown a lot since 2018.
He’s had other big games that he’s torn apart, and found consistency in his game around 2022.

Also worth understanding that Mason was originally signed as a “Category B Rookie”.
This is effectively a development/project position on the roster that is reserved for athletes that have not need in the AFL system.
It’s generally reserved for athletes trying to cross from other sports, and sometimes international athletes, particularly Irish players due to the similarities between Australian football and Gaelic football.
Category B rookies are on a low level salary and have to prove themselves at state league level before they can be eligible for selection in the AFL team.
They usually get an opportunity when a senior player suffers a long term injury or retires midseason.
It’s common for Category B rookies to never play an AFL game.

I'm an American who lived in Australia, so let me add some background to this. When it came to his first game, which is was on ANZAC Day. ANZAC (Australia/New Zealand Armed Corps) Day is the equivalent of our Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, and Veterans Day, all rolled into one, where they honor the legacies of all of their current and former soldiers, especially those who fought in WW1 and WW2. For that match, which started in 1995 as always being Collingwood vs. Essendon, is the 2nd highest attended match of the entire AFL season (2nd only to the Grand Final), so it's a big deal.
It's always a celebrated thing when an AFL player plays in their first game. It's an even bigger deal when a player kicks their first goal in the AFL. It's even rarer when an AFL player's first touch and first kick of the footy is a kick for goal. Mason Cox, in his FIRST game, in his FIRST touch of the football, kicks his FIRST GOAL, on ANZAC Day. That's the equivalent of say, Randy Moss or O'Dell Beckham making one of their famous catches for their first touchdown in their first game, played on say, Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. That's why the commentators incredulously said "Can you believe that an American, in his first game, kicks the first goal, on ANZAC Day!? That didn't happen!!"
Now for that Preliminary final. Think of that as the AFC or NFC finals for the NFL. The winner goes to the Super Bowl, and the loser plans for next season. Richmond were the previous year's premiers, and were favored to win this game, as they beat Collingwood before, and had a 22-game consecutive win streak at the MCG. You saw what happened. Collingwood went to the Grand Final, losing eventually to West Coast. But as someone said, there needs to be a part 2 to this, because of what happened with Collingwood in the 2023 season.

4:12 What they saw was a tall player (AFL is looking for extra tall players to play in certain positions) who was nevertheless quick and nimble considering his near 7 foot size. They took a punt on him and it paid off.

Important fact when you’re talking about the club being patient and supportive, which all our clubs try to do.
In AFL teams are (mostly?) owned by the supporters. Lots of people are members of their favourite team’s club.
I think this is unusual in high level professional sport.
    And I adore our game!
Nothing like rugby, or your American football. Faster, tougher, and more insane skills. It’s very fast with minimal stoppages.

Cox's teammate Scott Pendlebury was a basketballer in his teens. He was selected in the Australian Under-18 squad but dropped out to enter the AFL draft and is about to play his 400th game.
When he dropped out of the national U-18 basketball squad he was replaced with Patty Mills who then went on to have a long career in the NBA. It worked out pretty good for both of them.

They won the Grand Final last year. Mason plays for my team, the Collingwood Magpies or just the Pies. I used to call him our American Pie but he is now an Australian Citizen. The press and the fans gave him hell for about 4 years. He didn’t get to play first grade for a long time.
I loved how he never gave up and he was determined to learn. He did it with quiet determination and he never complained. He had to come up to the standards of elite athletes and learn many skills foreign to him. He got it.
He would be further ahead today if a player from another team had not gouged both of his eyes and then dragged his thumb nails down Masons eyes detaching both retinas. It took 6 surgeries to restore his sight and he now plays in swimming goggles because a bad hit can leave him blind. He still doesn’t give up. I know how hard that was because my daughter went through the same surgeries for detached retinas at the same time. I missed that game but Heaven help the player who did that if I ever see him.
If you haven’t already. Watch What is AFL. It is the first coded football anywhere. Older than yours.

Just to be clear he is by no means a superstar. He is a role player in big team. Great effort none the less.
The reason it was so fast was because of his height. Tall players don’t require anywhere near the skill set of smaller players ( similar to basketball ) their height is their weapon. If he was 6’2 there is no way he would ever have been drafted. Not in a. Million years. You have to grow up playing football to make it at that height.

Cox played in last years Collingwood Grand Final. He is now an integral part of our team. Does he have bad days? of course he does! They all do. Now the Collingwood fans carry Old Glory & chant U.S.A when Coxy kicks a goal. He is a huge target during games, but he always does his job, tap the ball down to our faster, smaller players. We love him, others don't but we don't care, they hate the team anyway. That's because our team is great!

He plays for the most hated side in AFL Collingwood so I think if he played for someone else a lot more aussies would have liked him. I’m from Sydney which is different state than Collingwood so I dont mind Mason. But if he played for the GWS the only other side in the state of New South Wales like my side Sydney I would hate him 😂
A lot of gifted Australians who play in the NBA were also stars as teenagers in both basketball and AFL. And then had to either choose between basketball and AFL or didn’t get chosen for a AFL side so then choose basketball. Or as our national basketball side the boomers is so highly thought of it is deemed probably our top national team a lot left AFL as teams as they wanted to play for the boomers.
Top players who were both AFL and basketball stars as teens in Australia include
    Patty mills
    Josh green
    Josh giddey
    Dante exum
    Ben Simmons
    Dyson Daniels
    Joe ingles
Also many top NFL punters come from Australia as they are phenomenal kickers of the ball. Many go to NFL after they have played for a while in the AFL
And our AFL sides cannot be privately owed so some millionaire can’t come in and take over. The clubs are owned by its supporters who buy memberships and these memberships pay for some of the costs of running club
AFL would take off I think in the US as it takes on many sports but you guys would need to get free healthcare first due to the many injuries
