There needs to be a part 2 video made.
Mason has since won a premiership with Collingwood - the only US American to do so.
He’s also torn a few more big games apart, and probably had his best season in 2022. He’s still playing, but is basically at retirement age.

I'm an American who lived in Australia for a couple of years, so I'll also share a bit of insight into this. First off is Mason's first game on ANZAC Day. ANZAC (Australia New Zealand Armed Corps) is the equivalent of our Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, and Veteran's Day, all rolled into one. They use it to celebrate their veterans and those lost in the wars that they participated in. For the past 29 years, that game has always been in round 5 of the AFL season, and is always between Collingwood and Essendon. It is arguably the 2nd highest attended game of the season (second only to the Grand Final). It is safe to say that the entire country stops for this game, to the point of they even will take the day off of work for this game. Mason Cox debuted in this game, as you saw.
It is a big thing for a player to debut in a game. It is an even bigger thing when that new player kicks and celebrates their first goal. It is an even bigger thing (read: in VERY RARE COMPANY) when a player's first kick of the ball is for a goal. Mason Cox, in his first game ever, in his first possession ever, with his first kick ever, kicks his first goal ever, ON ANZAC DAY, the 2nd biggest game of the year. This would be the equivalent of say, Randy Moss making one of his catches, or O'Dell Beckham making that 1-handed catch, for a touchdown, for his first game, on Veteran's Day. That is why the commentators said "Can you believe that an American, in his first game, kicks the first goal, on ANZAC Day? That didn't just happen!!" And it did.
Fast forward to that preliminary final. Consider the Preliminary finals to be like the Conference playoffs in the NFL. Winner of the AFC championship and NFC championship game goes to the Super Bowl, and the loser plans for next year. This is what happened here. Richmond were the reigning Premiers, and were favorites to not only win this game, but win the premiership again. They also had beat Collingwood the last 2 times they played them earlier that year. That is why the commentator stated "this could be the biggest game that Mason Cox never gets a kick in." You saw the result.

Brother I couldn’t have said it myself, and as a Collingwood supporter couldn’t be more proud of Mason, that night of the prelim against Richmond, everybody and anybody thought we were lambs to the slaughter, I was out camping with my wife and kids and a few others, even those who weren’t footy supporters were caught up in the radio commentary, and the thing that got us all was how clearly the crowd were chanting USA everytime big Mason took a mark and kicked a goal, I mean an American took the 2nd
highest amount of contested marks in the history of the game, it brought a tear to my eyes, then for him to finally play in a premiership omg, they’ll probably make a movie on him back in the US

Collingwood Magpies are based in Melbourne, the global home of AFL. The club is officially registered as beginning in 1892 and our mascot is the extraordinary Australian Magpie. A freaking awesome Australian animal around which many stories are told. These birds have one of the most phenomenal calls - flute-like carolling, that is quintessential Aussie and music to the ears of Aussies. They live in family groups, in which mum & dad pair for life. They stand about 30cm (1 foot) high, have powerful flight, powerful legs for walking the grasslands looking for food, and strong, stabbing beaks to grab invertebrates out of the soil. In the breeding season they are FIECELY defensive of the nest area where their kids are extremely vulnerable; mum is on the nest, dad is patrolling for threats. As a dad, I reckon you can understand where they're coming from. Some males will physically swoop threats, e.g. dogs, humans, and stab with their beaks.
The trick to not being swooped is to know where the maggies are and understand why they swoop - they are protecting their family! So the trick to not get swooped is simply don't be a threat - go and make friends, talk to them, make eye contact. If youvrun, you confirm that you're a threat. I can do a magpie call, so this seems to help me a lot (yes, I am the crazy magpie lady!).
These birds are extremely intelligent and are able to recognise human faces, so if you demonstrate you're not a threat, they won't swoop.
Check them out - they're amazing and just the best mascot for a footy club!

Hey, I love your comments around the greatest game in the world- Aussie Rules Footy! You understood it from the first video. I'm a crazy Collingwood Supporter - have no memory of choosing a team...I just am A Pies supporter. It's great that you're now aware of Mason Cox, aka Coxilla. They cheer U-S-A when he does something well. 60 Minutes in the US did an episode on Mason - I think it aired last year? He's had some bad eye injuries - scratched cornea (from a fingernail) and detached retinas (both eyes). Was out for a long time (basically a whole season). And now wears Google's when he plays. Despite his detractors, he has now played more than 100 games! When you consider the weirdness & difficulty of how a footy (that's Aussie for football) moves, and that Aussies play with this ball & learn the game as a kid, it is phenomenal that an American has done what Cox has done, learning the game from scratch as an adult!.

Collingwood are arguably the most hated club in the AFL by all other supporters, as are arguably the Dallas Cowboys in NFL.. Collingwood could have been the most successful AFL team ever, but have a tendency to choke on the biggest day of the season.. 16 Grand Final wins and 27 Grand Final loses!! 😂

So, I say this as someone who likes Mason Cox, he's a pretty ordinary player most of the time. His height mostly has kept him worthwhile to Collingwood. That Prelim Final was his first big game and he has had a few more where everything came together but that's about it. He got a poke in the eye in the Grand Final following this and didn't realise he had a detached retina until later the next year when he got a poke in the other eye and that retina got detached. He went very close to going blind and had to have a number of surgeries to fix them. Hoping to continue playing he found a company that made him special glasses he can wear while playing. In 2023 he played his 100th AFL game (players careers are judged on games not years) and The Magpies won that year's Grand Final. He's now Mason Cox, premiership player and no one can take that away from him. He has a podcast and went in depth about his AFL life after winning the GF. Worth a watch if you are interested but too long to react to.
As for teams, I don't actually go for Collingwood. My team are the Essendon Bombers and we have a long history of winning premierships as we have the equal VFL/AFL championship wins of 16 (🤫along with Collingwood and Carlton🤫). I've seen 4 in my lifetime however, we have been kind of OK to terrible for 20 years now so I don't recommend picking them. Not unless you enjoy getting your hopes up only to have your heart broken again and again.

Collingwood would be a good choice since you can have a affinity with them through Coxy. As you learn more what is never mentioned is the the AFL is owned and run by the teams who in turn are owned and run by its members (fans who pay a small fee each year) which means nobody can own a team even the richest person in the world cannot buy a team it is a game owned by its own fans which I think is cool and so different from US sports and soccer. Watch last year's grand final Collingwood v Brisbane with 12 lead changes and watch last week's Collingwood v Essendon Anzac day match and you will enjoy I promise. Good luck.

He's not a superstar by any means, he's had only a few games where he's been better than average, not dissing him at all, out of the Dream Teams scores, he averages in the 40's, most his team mates are 90 and above, last weeks game he had 17 of his team mates higher than him, 6 disposals and 9 hit outs, he was the second worse out of the magpies. In saying that, I like that he is apart of making our game known to the world, as well as a lot of other international people and it getting a massive following from all around the world, last years Grand Final was view internationally by nearly 5 million people. He was apart of that and kudos to him and all other players that came here to play our game. Thanks Mason

Mason was chosen for his height, however it takes all heights, from short to tall, to play in a game if Aussie footy. While height is needed for marking the ball, short players are able to get closer to the ball on the ground. The' VFL' mentioned, where Mason first played, is the Victorian Football League. It is second to the AFL where players are often picked from, where they go when not quite good enough and and to where some AFL players 'retire' .Victoria was the state where Aussie footy originated and has it's biggest following in this state. The MCG is there in it's capital, Melbourne.

I would like you to pick Collingwood Magpies because of the fact that the American guy is playing for them... us... I am a Collingwood supporter. But you should be free to choose whatever team you want. People threatening to unsubscribe from your channel is disgusting. And now they will probably say that it was a joke. If I had a channel and I said that I was going to choose the Dallas Cowboys as my team because of an Australian player I wouldn't expect to get that response.
I'm a Baltimore Ravens fan anyway. But that's another story.
Anyway I didn't have any family allegiance to a team or a geographic one, so I chose Collingwood when I was a small boy. And I watched them playing in the grand final in 1979. This was the first grand final I watched. 1979 Carlton Def Collingwood. The next year Collingwood Magpies lost the grand final to the Richmond Tigers, 1980. In 1981, my third football grand final Collingwood were defeated by Carlton. 😢 What were they the Buffalo Bills? 😂 Actually that hadn't happened yet. And Collingwood Magpies have won many championships in their history. But I happened to grow up during a "drought". 1958-1990
My point is that I hope you choose a good team for you.
But you can learn about the teams, colors, history, location and players.
I am really happy that two of the current Collingwood Magpies players are the son's of my favourite player. And the Captain of the team is the son of the guy who was the Captain of the team when I was little. (Except the father left us for Melbourne, but he is back in our camp now)
And we have Mason Cox. 🇺🇲
I think Collingwood is great. ⬛⬜⬛
I also think Carlton is great. 🟦🟦◻️
    And Essendon Bombers ✈️🔴⬛
    And the Richmond Tigers 🟨⬛
    Geelong Cats are great. 🟦⬜
Even the Sydney Swans have a good following. 🟥⬜🦢
But the new team GWS Giants 🟧⬛ are looking for their first championship.
Have a look at some info on some of the teams before choosing one.
But you should know that Collingwood is a small suburb of Melbourne and it is close to Carlton and touches Richmond.
Geelong is a town on the other side of the large bay.
There are teams from the other states.
The Brisbane Lions are a merger of the former Brisbane Bears 🐨 and the Fitzroy Lions. 🦁
Fitzroy is a Melbourne suburb which is adjacent to Collingwood.
So the Collingwood Magpies and the Brisbane Lions are a bit like the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Used to be local rivals and now are national rivals.
🎶 Good ol' Collingwood forever, they know how to play the game. Side by side they stick together to uphold the Magpie name....
That's the oldest song in the AFL. Also the Magpies are the oldest mascot. 🤔
The Fitzroy Lions used to be the Gorillas. 🦍
😂 Ok that's enough trivia for one day.
Funny fact, at the time of the very first meeting of the second team from Western Australia, Fremantle, and the second team from South Australia, Port Adelaide, at the time, 1997 there was an industrial dispute between the dock workers and the shipping company. Even the longshoremen in the USA joined in solidarity for the cause. Anyway the funny thing is that the name of the Fremantle team is the Fremantle Dockers ⚓ and the opposition was called Port Adelaide Power ⚡, but they were called "Port Power".
So it's the Freo Dockers Vs Port Power. ⚓😂🤔🛳️
    Who won?
    The union, I think. 🤔
    No, the AFL match. 😅
I don't know. I just like to remember that I laughed about it. 😂
Just don't mess with the 'painters and Dockers' . LOL
Actually Port Adelaide were / are the Magpies but Collingwood forced them to change their mascot and colors when they were admitted to the AFL in 1997.

Anything that can be taxed in Australia ie investments will also be taxed by the US. But I'm sure his accountant will have all this sorted.

Im a diehard pies supporter for nearly 50yrs and Cox is useless. He may play one decent game a year and this year he is terrible. Missing goals, dropping marks and not even getting 6 possessions a game most games. He runs under the ball in flight, cant read the flight and goes up with one arm. In his whole career i can count on one hand that he has had good games.
Anyone that says otherwise dont know what they are talking about. I study this club and its players in depth and know their weakness and strengths. My best mate is also mates with a club medical team and I get alot of insight of the inner circle that the public dont know. He averages 3 marks a game yet he is the tallest player in the game, plays predominately up forward and as a backup ruckman, yet has only kicked 3 goals this year. He can be a good player but clearly he never has been, he is 7ft tall, over 100kg and yet he is weak in the contests and doesnt put his body on the line. He is a liability to the team this year and because of so many injuries to the list there is no pressure to replace him with another tall because if there was he wouldnt even be getting a game.
Mason isnt far from retiring as the younger ruckman coming through will replace him and when he does he will take the money, jet back to the U.S. and we will never hear from him again.

I like your content but I would have to strongly consider unsubscribing if you choose Collingwood, I’m a Geelong cats supporter by all means make your own choice as long as it’s not Collingwood
