Your comment about it being a "combination" of other sports ... I would suggest AFL developed on its own. It started in 1858 ( but has mutated since) ie: well before most other codes.
Also keep in mind Australia was very isolated back then so there was very little "foreign" influence. It really is an exclusively Australian code in that respect.

I work at the MCG Melbourne Cricket ground and although there is rivalry between the supporters, fans of either side do sit together and generally act in a civil manner towards each other. In Melbourne, indeed Victoria we have the Friday off, the day before the grand final which is always played on a Saturday, where 100,000+ fans cheer the players on. 👍🤗

You're right. If you were to sit "enemy territory", you'd probably get a bit of lip, in jest or sometimes in seriousness, but majority of the time, that's the worst you'll get.

Love Australian Football, remember first seeing in here in the UK in the early 90s and my mind was blown. We had an Australian sports coach at my school and I tried to get him to set up some sort of after school ‘footy’ practice, he was open to it but sadly never got off the ground. The AFL now have proper schools packs for a condensed version of the game for overseas now too, I was ahead of my time 😂

Although it looks like a combination of sports it’s actually older in terms of codified laws than all of those Spencer, it dates to 1859

Dribbling the ball slowes the ball holder giving a chasing player a chance to carch up. Its a great rule in such a free flowing game.
The game does not stop... even if a guy gets knocked out.

The rules of what would still be recognised today as AFL was clearly established along with some of today's teams quite a long time before NFL or American Basketball rules were established. AFL as a sport is actually older than American football, basketball or American ice hockey so it is incorrect to state that AFL has adopted or incorporated elements of those sports when these elements were already established in AFL before those existed as organised sports.

Greatest sport on the planet. Unlike NFL and the rugby codes, It's a sport based on extraordinary ALL-ROUND athleticism, of which the bumps, tackles and violence are just one part. If you want violence, watch the 'biggest hits' videos, but definitely watch the top 50 marks of all time and the top 50 goals of all time, to truly see the beautiful skill on display as well as the toughness. Also watch the highlights of the 2018 Grand Final, it was a CLASSIC. There are other explanatory videos on the rules etc you can find as well. Welcome!

A lot of punters in College Football come from an Australian Football background now as punting is basically how you pass - there’s been a handful make it in the NFL but Michael Dickson is probably the most famous and successful, made the Pro Bowl in his rookie year. His double punt that blew minds in the US was just his Aussie muscle memory kicking in.
There are some videos out there about Aussie punters in American football that might be interesting too you and a good reaction to bridge the sports

It is a religion for a lot of people. That said the stadiums aren't segregated for the fans, you can sit anywhere. Although the space behind the goals at either end are allocated to each of the official Cheer Squads, so there tends to to be areas of the ground more heavily one supporter base. That said is is very much a family affair going to the footy.

To see a great match ALMOST complete game on youtube. Great rivalry. I recommend 1989 Grand Final. Hawthorn Hawks vs Geelong Cats. Great game.

  • @Rassskle

Aussie rules tackling had to be formalised sensibly probably in the 1800's but definitely in the early 1900's as the game became professional .
Winning is more important than good manners or good form .
Pretty footballers win individual medals , tough brutal footballers win premierships ( Superbowl / World Cup ).
As Hawthornes Dermot Brereton said in an interview.. Hawthorn don't pay me to be nice to the opposition.
A brutal, mean and vicious footballer, Brereton also played the full game in the 1989 Grand Final with brocken ribs and a split kidney.
Thats right........targeted by Geelongs captain at the opening bounce to start the game, Brereton suffered brocken ribs and a split kidney, but refused to leave the field.
The trainors and medical staff helped him to the forward pocket ( to rest safely ? ).......in his usual arrogance, Brereton shrugged off his opponent , attacked the ball jumping at full stretch and marked it, then kicked Hawthorns first goal for the game .
He then played the full 120+ minutes ( over 2 hours ) to help The Hawkes win the premiership cup in one of the toughest games ever played.
About 12 players from the 42 or 44 that played that day spent the night in hospital, and few stayed quite a bit longer .
Robert Dipierdomenico had his ribs brocken late in the 2nd quarter. .....he played the whole 2nd half, about 65 minutes, with a punctured lung.......then collapsed when he heard the final siren.

I have been an AFL “Footy” fan for 70 years and have also attended International Rules Series of a modified version Gaelic Football with some AFL rules included when a Gaelic football team from Ireland come to Australia at the end of the Season to compete on the MCG and Australia fields a composite All Australian team. It is played with a round ball, different pitch size and goal post set up but still fast and loads of kicking and handling of the ball with slightly less full contact. There hasn’t been a game in some years but I would go to another one if it was convened. You might find it interesting to check out. 2023 saw my grandson go out with the Hawthorn team and through the banner at the MCG and the same with my youngest granddaughter who led the Tigers players on to the MCG. How could we be uncivil with each other as supporters, in my family alone different members follow Geelong, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Richmond and Footscray. That does mean there aren’t some disruptive elements that attend games, but we all know there is a phone number that goes straight to the police on duty at the ground that we can discretely ring and the security cameras zoom straight in on the area you designate and the disruptive element are warned, removed from the stadium or charged if they have gotten over intoxicated or worse. Nothing is ever perfect but 99.9% of fans just go to watch and support their teams, not look for a fracas.

I've yet to see an American youtuber that only watches highlight videos really have any idea about the sport itself.
However, I have seen two Americans that actually watch a lot of games live and then actually play the sport itself that actually truly get it. They are the only American youtubers I have seen , that actually have any real understanding of the sport. If you only watch videos like the one you just watched you will learn next to nothing. You can only learn by watching matches and even then minimal if only via a tv camera. The ground is way too big too fully appreciate what going on in real time by a camera honed in on one bit of the ground at a time.

That was a tough listen. An ex-pat Brit trying to cram so much information in that he probably confused as many viewers as those he helped. This video should only be watched after the AFL's own "What is AFL: Aussie Rules Explained" video which sets out the basics in a more structured format. Someone needs to do a series of probably half a dozen videos on AFL - 1. AFL: The Basics, 2. AFL: The Rules, 3. AFL: The Teams, 4. AFL: The Draft, 5. AFL: The History, 6. AFL: Legendary Moments. I put this last one in because there are so many things that have happened over the history of the VFL/AFL that are key pieces of play that all "AFL devotees" know instantly and celebrate as being great about the game.

So the finals start with 8 teams and by the Grand Final it is 2 , if you lose the Grand Final then you get runners up(Losers) medals . The winners get Medals and also the AFL Cup and Flag and are Premiers until the next season GF.

The sport itself is Australian Rules Football or Australian Football. The name of the premier league for this sport happens to be Australian Football League and AFL for short. So AFL is the name of the main league but NOT the name of sport. There is only a public holiday in the state of Victoria on the day BEFORE the grand final. As a footy fan your mood for the week will depend on whether your team has won or lost the previous weekend.
It is important to point out that AFL is not completely national.
AFL states are Vic, SA (origin of footy (debated)), WA, TAS.

Gangs from both teams congregated in the favoured hill area and went to war , often late in the 2nd quarter or in the 3rd quarter after the half time break.
Also many of the biggest brawels were started by little old ladies armed with an umbrella.
( I know this from my own family legend......Aunt Flo belted a Carlton supporter repeatedly with her umbrella , then grabbed her young neice, my future mother, by the arm and dragged her to safety and home... .leaving behind one of the biggest blood baths in Aussie history . )
And my mother never went to another footy game ......not even when i was playing in a Grand Final.

That 2020 update video is terrible. It's some amateur dicing, splicing and voice-overing (destroying?) the original.

Wrong video, this is NOT, “what is AFL, Aussie rules explained.” search for these exact words, it’s a much better explanation.

Hey guys, with AFL, you gotta react to:
    *Buddy Franklin's 1000th goal*
    You guys gotta see it!
    Do the 10 minute version

Unfortunately the guy describing the game is a Pom, and the description is TERRIBLE. So much so that I feel that I should make my own video of the game and explain what it is, the rules, the strategies. He glosses over important points and goes into immense detail with irrelevancies (like what the various field positions are named, how the finals are determined, or how the Brownlow Medal is determined). If I knew nothing about the game I would still know next to nothing after watching this video. Having played more than 400 games myself (not at the highest level) until I was 43 years old, I was appalled at this description.

OMG a Brit of all people to explain Aussie rules. This is a terrible explanation. Watch the official AFL video what is AFL? Much better explained and presented.

If you silly yanks got rid of helmets and poofy pads, your players would be forced to tackle differently. You'd have a lot less cte.. and career ending injuries
