It’s the blind hits in afl that get you…from 360 degrees..in rugby they hit hard but you know where it’s coming from and you are generally braced for it.

    • @ChuckGibbs39
      @ChuckGibbs39 4 месяца назад +1

@Tuokoolit’s different kinds of brutal for the two games. In rugby getting hit is pretty unavoidable, you get belted all day but most of the time you’re prepared for it. In Aus football you can get hit from all directions at nearly any point in the game. Rugby has more hits but aus football has the more dangerous hits imo

At the 24 minute mark you ask whether , when going for a mark if you see someone coming out of the corner of your eye, you can just step away from the ball. The short answer is yes. The long answer is that your fans would never forgive you and would always accuse you being a squib and hearing footsteps and your teammates would likely never truly trust you again, and your coach is probably going to relegate you to the reserves until you grow a set. Many a promising career has been cut short because a player didn't have an appetite for the hard stuff. The unwritten rules of Aussie rules ares you never take your eyes off the ball, and when it's your turn to go , you go, regardless of the potential consequences. I have seen players booed because they short stepped to avoid a contest. This game has never been about self preservation.

AFL's origins start from an Australian Aboriginal Game called (Marn Grook) and Gaelic Football in Ireland later adapted into the modern day sport. Aussie Rules (first game 1858) It has nothing to do with Rugby (first game 1882). Neither should it be compared to American Football - simple.

Aussie Rules......average ground is an oval ( shaped like a football ) and about 160 yards ( 480 feet ) long by about 100 yards ( 300 feet ) wide.
But can be over 200 yards long and over 160 yards wide.....
Each team has 18 players on the field.....6 forwards ( scorers ), 6 defenders ( to stop the other teams forwards ), 3 centers ( 1 centerman & 2 wingmen ) and 3 followers ( 1 ruckman and 2 running , tackling midfielders who run everywhere ) and 4 interchange players who start the game on the bench.
So, 36 players on the field and 8 players warming the bench.
Every player is a forward, defender, midfielder and ruckman...depending on the situation.
Most ruckman are about 6'6" +, but if you are only 5' nothing and no one else is there, then you play like a ruckman.
Make it difficult for the 7' monster.
Head butt his nuts if you have to.....anything.
Every player kicks the ball, marks it, runs with it and tries to hurt the opposition.
By grade 6 at primary school ( about 11 yo ) you are fearless or not a footballer and probably have no friends.
If you play junior footy for a club, then you train harder than a Rugby International.
Having played both Rugby League and Aussie Rules, i found that 2 hours of Rugby League training was easier than my under 15's warm up for Aussie Rules.
Rugby players need strength and / or speed.
Aussie Rules players need skills and endurance as well as resilience .
Speed and size are a big advantage in Aussie Rules but MOST superstars are neither big nor fast......just freakishly talented and naturally tough.

Need to watch " Here comes the Boom" . That shows more bumps and some blood aswell. Or even watch Worst AFL Injuries. We actually don't get that much injuries from contact, mainly from running and change of direction. Alot hamstrings, calves, odd broken leg or stress fractures, odd black eye, dislocated fingers, then doing the knee ACL. Of course the odd concussion, but nowadays if you get one you're automatically not allowed to play the next game, so you get at least a 11 day break. Most of concussions are as a result of the head hitting the ground, not the actual bodily impact from someone else. It may seem like we're deliberately going for the head hit, but it's what we call "hip and shoulder" bump. You line up side on those 2 areas and are allowed to push off with the hands/ arm, but don't raise your arm with force upward it's a legal hit but dont touch above the shoulders. Automatic free kick if touch above shoulders.

  • @chriskelly9476
    @chriskelly9476 5 месяцев назад +3

No, you can't aim for the head. Sometimes it happens accidentally but other times its careless. The 'bull' at 5:43 is Lance 'Buddy' Franklin and that was an illegal hit. As soon as you take your eyes off the ball and you make contact with someone's head you're in trouble because you can't argue that it happened accidentally whilst you were going for the ball. That's why young players are taught not to take their eyes off the ball. The rules around tackling used to be a lot more relaxed but the league has become a lot more strict with head contact due to the rate of concussions.

Regarding ball bumped out at 5:18 . If the marking(catching) player, has controlled the ball sufficiently, then it's a mark! Play stops & the player that marked the ball, has a free kick!..(as long as the ball was kicked longer than 15metres in the air untouched).BUT this play, the ball had been handpassed, so it can't be a mark ..play on.

The name of the game is to gain ground by passing the ball. if you kick the ball to your team mate and he catchs the ball then thats considerd as a Mark. The mark is one of the most unique features of our game. If you look up top marks in AFL then you will see some spectacular Gravity defying catchs. we call them species. its a sight to see.

While a lot of these hits are huge, it's a bit like being a drunk. Drunks frequently don't get seriously hurt when hit because they are too relaxed and roll with the contact. Because the hits can come from anywhere is Aussie rules, you can't always see them coming so you don't tense up, so fold around the contact. Having said that, a lot of those hits are illegal in the modern game, because like all contact sports, concussion has become a major issue. Honestly the hardest part about the game isn't the hits, it's the constant running. The best in the game will run over 10 miles during the game (one of the best ever covered nearly 15), the worst will still cover over 5, and about 40% of that is at a flat out sprint. Their aerobic capacity is enormous. Then you add in the constant body on body contact, even when nowhere near the ball as defenders try to intimidate forwards and vice versa, then throw in the hits and tackles. As to black and blue after a game, most players take 3-4 days to physically recover after a game.
As to the hits themselves, for years we were taught to hit with the hip & shoulder, basically turn side on to the opponent and try to put your shoulder through their sternum effectively. If you did it right, there was the chance you would break their ribs and take them out of the game or at worst, cause them to not go so hard the next contest, also effectively taking them out of the game through intimidation. While it is still used, it is less frequent because if you hit your opponents head at all now, you are likely going to be suspned for a couple of weeks. What you think are elbows are frequently just the arm bouncing up from your side after a contest, much like you bounce off a trampoline. The arm has been comprossed into your side and as the pressure is released it flies up. That isn't to say elbows don't happen, but it isn't as common as you might think. Actual illegal hits like that really are frowned upon by fans and players alike. Hard, brutal but always fair. Never ask for quarter, never give it. To be honest though, truly big hits don't happen every week in every game, more like maybe once or twice a week.

HeHeHe.......1989 Grand Final, Hawthorn ( Hawks) vs Geelong ( Cats ).
Earlier that year , Brereton took out Geelong captain Yeates.....who had a testacle removed.
The Grand Final ( superbowel ) was payback time.
Yeates cleaned up Brereton at the opening bounce then went him again when on the ground in agony.
Brereton had brocken ribs and a split kidney, but refused to leave the field.
Trainors half carried Brereton down to the forward pocket as Brereton was vomiting up bile.
He broke away from the trainors and took a high , leaping mark above his head at full stretch, ribs etc wide open.
Kicked the Hawks first goal for the game, and played the whole 120 + minutes, over 2 hours.
Dipierdomenico got crunched by Gary Ablett Snr just before half time......took the defensive mark but was in a lot of pain.
Got through the half time break, and played the whole 2nd half.....over one hour of football.
At the siren to end the game, Dipierdomenico collapsed.....brocken ribs and a punctured lung.
No way Brereton or Dipper ( Bertie for short ) was leaving the field, not in a Grand Final....and they won.
Both teams had about 6 players go straight to hospital after the siren and stay there.....no celebrations until released from hospital. lol

Loved the intro: hilarious. If the player with the ball is bumped and loses the ball, it is fair game; anyone can take possession of the ball. There is no fumble rule in Aussie rules. We keep playing continuously with a few exceptions: 1. If a player takes a mark (catches the ball on the full from a kick of at least 15 m [16ish yards] without it being touched on the way), he (I will use the term he but, of course, the game is played by women as well, but I can't be bothered writing "he/she" or, worse "they"), can elect to stop, go behind the mark (the point where the mark was taken and on which an opposition player is allowed to stand) and take up to 15 seconds if not in range of the goal or 30 seconds if in range of goal to dispose of the ball (he can also play on from a mark if he chooses), 2. If the umpire (what you would call the referee) awards a free kick (which could be for a range of illegal moves like holding the ball [not disposing of the ball immediately when tackled], holding the man [grabbing a player who is not in possession of the ball], tackling too high [above the shoulders] or low [below the knees], throwing the ball [it has to be kicked or handballed {struck from the palm of one hand with the fist of the other hand}], kicking the ball out of bounds [over the boundary line {what you would call the sideline}] etc), 3. If there is a "stalemate" and it is clear that neither side can gain clear possession, in which case the umpire throws the ball up for two tall opposing players (ruckmen) to attempt to tap it to one of their players (somewhat like a jump ball in basketball), 4. If the ball goes out of bounds, not on the full and the umpire determines it was not deliberately taken out of bounds (in which case it would be a free kick), the boundary umpire throws the ball into the field of play backwards over his head (so that there is no perception of favouritism for one side or the other) for the ruckmen to tap it out, 5. After goals, when the umpires run the ball to the middle of the ground to bounce the ball for the ruckmen to tap it out. In addition, there are no time outs in Aussie rules, just the breaks between the quarters.
Number 23 is Lance "Buddy" Franklin, a force of nature. He is tall, extremely talented and tough. He is one of only six VFL (the predecessor to the AFL)/AFL players who have kicked 1,000 career goals. He retired last year. His highlight reel is worth a watch: ruclips.net/video/uss4QzX1mRk/видео.html Yes, forwards are allowed to tackle and bump. It is an important aspect of forward play and can help lock the ball in to your forward line and give your team another scoring opportunity. One of the interesting aspects of Aussie rules is that, while there are certainly defined roles for each player, any player can perform any role at any stage of the game. All players are expected to be able to run, kick, handball and tackle.
Are you allowed to wimp out of attempting to take a mark when you see a player lining you up out of the corner of your eye? Yes, but good luck getting a game next week or getting any respect from your team mates. That is not what the game is about.
No, you are not allowed to make contact with the head. Head high contact will result in a free kick and if it is deliberate or reckless, the offending player will be reported and is likely to be suspended for several games. You will notice that a lot of the head contact was from many years ago (the old black and white and poorer quality colour video), since which the AFL has cracked down on head contact. AFL is still tough, but they are trying to avoid concussions where possible. A bump below the head and neck, known as a "hip and shoulder" (because that is the part of the body that makes contact) is fair, as long as the tackled player has possession of the ball or the ball is within 5 m.
Broken ribs? Tough? Dermott Brereton and Robert Dipierdomenico (Hawthorn) were phyically targeted by Geelong right at the start of the 1989 Grand Final (i.e. our Super Bowl). The former suffered multiple broken ribs and a bruised kidney, the latter, multiple broken ribs and a punctured lung. Both continued to play that game after their injuries.
I get the feeling you will enjoy watching AFL games. The season starts on 7th March. You can buy a streaming pass here: www.afl.com.au/matches/broadcast-guide/watch-afl Don't know what it costs. Alternately, you could use a VPN and watch free to air at 7plus.com.au Enjoy!

Rugby league is coming to Las Vegas in about two weeks. ESPN 2 will have it live and out of the 4 football codes we have in Australia it's probably the most similar to NFL but it is still a different game. 🇭🇲

Doesn't matter who kicked the ball....if YOU are in a position to mark the ball ( catch it ), then you only have eyes for the ball, and you are expected to attack the ball with all your power.
If you see another player, then your not trying hard enough, or you hear footsteps ( chicken ).
If you can get the ball, then you only see the ball and go get it.
If you know you are out of position and not much chance of winning the ball, then you play for your team.
    Block an opponent
    Take him out
    Tackle
Protect a team mate in a better position.
Make position for your teamate to give YOU the ball.
Never stop talking.......good teams are always talking, encouraging each other and kicking each others arse for blatant mistakes.
A lack of endeavour is trouble for a 12 yo kid, a lack of courage is out of the team.

Man , Gridiron , and Rugby are similar , AFL couldn't be more different , Rugby have an off side rule , like soccor , AFL not so , played on a cricket ground , I can't imagine how you could confuse the two games , it's extraordinary , AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL, Rugby have to throw backwards , AFL kick and run to position , how can you be serious , AUSSIE RULES , Rugger is a British game

AFL is absolutely nothing like Rugby. What, are you TRYING to upset us? NFL is more like Rugby (to us) than AFL is. Eat your words, Sir. Apologize or you are dead to me!
Rugby blows chunks, the shortcomings are obvious to us. Look, we know you're joking but you are getting a little close to the bone.
Also, most of the hits in this video would be deemed illegal in todays game. Most but, certainly not all. You MUST protect the head, both yours and your opponents, you cannot run past the ball to "bump" (anymore), the AFL are continuously modifying the rules in order to prevent concussion but, it's a full contact sport so, what are you gonna do.
    Also, also........Go Lions in 2024!
