As an Adelaide Crows supporter I firmly believe that Eddie played his best footy at the Crows. He brought so much pleasure and enjoyment to us supporters. I never heard him referred to as the Pied Piper.
❤️💛💙
As an Aussie, you have to attend an AFL game live to truly understand and appreciate these gladiators.
I’m a Collingwood supporter and have always loved this man, not only is he a legend of our game, he is such a humble bloke and a true gentleman, whenever the pies played Carlton or Adelaide you’d have that sinking feeling everytime the little man got the ball, he was that good that Carlton traded him to Adelaide then got him back again, he is right up there with the greatest sneaky forwards to ever play our game, he was consistently accurate and breathtaking
I'm an American married to an Aussie. Been watching AFL for over ten years. Get in touch with the USAFL, they've got teams all over. Need your enthusiastic support. Really glad you had some real emotions reactions to what you saw on the screen. Pleasant watching
Watching an American react to our game makes me so proud. Love from Australia 🇦🇺
If you take notice he is kicking goals right & left foot. Eddie is my son's favourite player my son is 26 & when you watch my son play it's just like watching Eddie Betts & yes he kick's freaky goals left & right foot like Eddie. My son got best player in the finals series last season & in the game to get into the grand final they came a draw the game went into extratime & my son kicked 4 of the best goals I have ever seen in my life to win the game & get his team into the grand final, man I was in tears a father full of pride, unfortunately his team lost the grand final, I can't wait for this season damn I'm so hungry for it I could eat a football
and also kicking checkside bananas on both left and right foot
While Eddie was playing at the Crows, he made a name for himself with his kicks from the pockets; in fact, at Adelaide Oval they named the north east pocket(by the old scoreboard)as 'Eddie Betts Pocket'. The kick from the pockets is called a 'banana kick, because of the way the kick bends; "Bend it like Betts". Some of the most brilliant and fantastic players in Aussie Rules are indigenous(first nation)players; at all levels, club, state or national. One of the rounds during the season is "Indigenous Round", check out AFL Clubs Indigenous jumpers; I might be prejudiced, but I don't believe any club has beaten the Adelaide Crows when it comes to there indigenous jumpers. Clubs have new indigenous jumpers every season.
I had the pleasure of meeting eddie betts on a number of occasions when he played for the crows. He would come past the butcher shop I was working at in the Adelaide central market. He was always extremely polite and well manured and treated everyone he met with respect just an all around great bloke
Eddie was the player that made me get back into footy. I kinda watched less and less after it became to hard to work and play and I lost passion. Then I saw Eddie play. I love the game now more than I ever have. To hear the Adelaide oval just erupt "EDDIE" when he kicked one of these impossible goals is something else
I’m a demons supporter and I reckon Eddie was one of the most liked players ever . Amazing player with that X factor and just really likeable . Always has a smile on his face and loved the game .
Despite the fact that Eddie Betts has never played for my team, he is still one of my favourite players. He is a guy that just puts bums on seats. Entertaining, crazy skilful and comes across as being a good bloke.
Great reaction to see someone as passionate about our game as the supporters in Australia.
Hard to believe on reflection but so many doubted the value to the Crows (Adelaide) paying $500000 a season on joining the club 10 years ago.
Turned out to be bargain and what clubs will pay around double for now.
Choose between Sydney and Brisbane for your team. The Swans were runners up last year and Brisbane finished in the top 4 so both have excellent chances of winning a premiership in the next few years.
Love the terminology. Ankle breakers ! Fantastic term and can see why. We use the term baulk for the move.
So much skill involved in the sport and quick reflexes and fast decision making is 1 of the unique features of the game and Eddie highlighted that perfectly.
Watch the best of Lance 'Buddy' Franklin for more highlights of the game.
G’day Johnny. Being a Carlton supporter I saw Eddie play many times. To be in the crowd when he did something magical was unbelievable. So much energy and excitement, unbelievable.
I'm just so glad I was able to take my daughter to see Eddie play live. We got the W as well.
We are gonna have to team up and help him narrow down to just being a Carlton supporter.
We can't let him end up as Collingwood haha.
As a WC🦅 supporter, I agree. We can’t let him pick Collingwood. It’s the team every American gets deceived into picking…
Johnny needs to watch the 1970, 1979, 1981 Grand Finals and Collingwoods centenary match 😂 The other thing is, no way can he be allowed to barrack for Essendon.
Gold coast suns yes
As a Richmond supporter I love Eddie Betts. He was just so amazing to watch. As you may or may not have noticed he could kick from impossible angles on his right or left foot. That takes some crazy skill.
With the speckie marks, we practiced that as kids, either jumping off our cousin's/brother's/friend's backs in kick to kick or practicing off the loungeroom couch! That arsey kick that Eddie did was actually a goal!
They actually have a big bag it’s just like a backpack that they strap on it’s padded it’s called a specky bag they use it for training
@@shane35188 True, but as a kid, you have to practice somehow before that!
@@kevkoala yeah of course that goes with out saying it’s born into our Aussie DNA it would be really worrying if kids weren’t running around trying to take big hangers off everything I remember at my primary school we used to play king of the pack
Eddie came to Geelong Cats in 2022 as a assistant Coach and brought along Tyson Stengle under his wing who was almost had his career cut short for off field problems. Eddies coaching helped our small forwards a lot with his knowledge and Tyson Stengle made the all Australian team, a premiership player and kicked the 8th most goals for the year (including finals) Tom Hawkins and Jeremy Cameron both also for Geelong ended up 1 and 2 for most goals for the season including finals
Your gonna love Gary Ablett highlights as well, both senior and Jr was both amazing players
Eddie Betts is the greatest goal kicker
He is the best
Eddie Betts an aboriginal player was born in in the South Australian Eyre peninsula but moved to Kalgoorlie here in Western Australian goldfields as a baby. He played for one of the local Kalgoorlie teams until picked up by the Carlton in the AFL.
Gday mate. Love watching your afl reactions. Gotta admit, I didn’t see much of your reaction until you paused. Coz every time there’s an Eddie video, I can’t take my eyes off him. No matter how he or his team were playing, good or terrible, he never gave up. Welcome to the best game ever
Don't know if you noticed but Eddie could kick just as well with either foot. Very handy skill to have when you're kicking from those very tight angles.
Eddie is amazing and respected even today as a footy commentator.
I'm a big time Carlton fan, we love Eddie an absolute legend of the club on and off the field. I think every kid who plays footy used to go down and try practice the Eddie Betts snap kicks from the sideline (you still see kids out trying all the time) and I reckon I hit like 3 out of 100 on a good day. The guy was a freak on the run, so much speed and control. Always a treat watching him play.
Love watching these Americans react to our great game!
Eddie is so exciting and a great person. Keep in mind too he was normally the smallest player on the ground at only like 5'8" and a lot of those speccies are on people over 6'4". At 6:06 it has the top 5 goal scorers of the season and Eddie is 2nd and all the over players range from 6'4" to 6'6".
With a 'behind' (or point) you'll never see the crowd cheer (unless its a game winning point), kicking a point is seen as a miss. You'll rarely see a point on a highlight reel and a "6 pointer" will always be referred to as a "goal". You should react to "Nic Nat is BACK! Naitanui's insane highlights reel | 2019 | AFL", its the highlights of Nic Naitanui. He's a ruckman a position you havent seen yet, its generally the tallest player on the ground. Even tho he was one of the tallest on the field he is incredibly fast, agile and athletic.
Eddie Betts is only called Pied Piper in the video you reacted to. Though I do not know his actual nickname, he was often referred to as "The Little Master" by TV commentators.
What American's call 'ankle breakers' in the NFL we would say that the ball holder was 'selling candy' to the other player.
Hints:-
1) When watching your first AFL match, do NOT stream or record your reaction. You don't want to miss the commentary!
2) We Australians do Not root for a team, we barrack for a team. In Australia, root is a polite way to say 'fuck' in the "i'm off to have sex" context, commonly used as "I'm off for a fuck" or "I'm gonna fuck the missus" but, instead of saying fuck, we say root!
3) Barrack for the Adelaide Crows!
The 'block' early on we call a smoother. Whilst he was with the Adelaide Crows (my #2 team), they nick named a corner after him, because of his amazing goals from the pockets.
Eddie lived close to me in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, great guy all round
Eddie is not even a big guy, but what an athelete!
No , his nickname wasn't the "Pied Piper" I think that's just this video , in any case , I've never heard that name before . He was just an amazing goal kicker though . I've seen things from Eddie that I'll never ever forget .
The "Right Pocket" (a field position) at the scoreboard end of the Adelaide Oval has been named "Eddie's Pocket" in his honour , because he kicked so many amazing goals from that position . So you know you're having an impact when they start naming things after you .
The answer to your question at (14:14) about "What does that count as" is "six Points Johnny". The thing with marking the ball and free kicks is , if , after marking the ball , you move forward of the point where you marked it , it's game on , you can be tackled , you can only take the free if you stop immediately after marking and move backward of the point on the ground (also called "the Mark" confusingly enough) where you marked it. So , Eddie marks the ball but continues running forward , so the opposition player tackles him and he starts to fall . In the process of falling , he manages to get the ball onto his foot and it goes through for a goal , it's clearly six points. Hope that cleared it up a bit for ya . Have another look at it.
I've seen a comment say he was once called that bacsue he'd bring in the crowd. Whenever he played, the tickets would sell and people would come.
You're right , Carlton thought he was washed up and wanted to move him on . Silly move as you will see what he did at the Crows . He has mentored a wayward young aboriginal player in Tyson Stengle , who was drafted by Geelong. He is showing Eddy Bets like ability and we at Geelong cant wait to see how his career pans out.
We Aussies are extremely proud of this game of ours, glad you're getting into it and picking a team. I reckon it's one of the (if not the) best sports on the planet. Keep up the awesome vids :)
With the goal kicking highlights - they almost never show behinds (points). All of those shots were goals. We consider behinds to be a miss.
One of the commentators referred to Eddie as the 'Pied Piper' one time and that was it. It was never his nickname, but it suits this video because he controls the ball like the Pied Piper controlled the rats.
That kick at 14:33 was a goal. It's very rare anybody celebrates a behind
Thought it was because he brings in the crowd. Whenever Eddie Betts played, the tickets would sell and people would come.
I think Eddy has the best highlights for any forward pocket he’s angle goals are amazing 👏
Great to have you on board, mate! ✌😄 A connoisseur of fine sports!
Thoroughly impressed with the level of prep you’re putting in!
Great vid Johnny, ticked off most of the original list.
Here are some still to consider mate:

Late to the party! Eddie was at a level where he was too good for a nickname, he was simply known as "Eddie" or "Eddiebetts"
Hi Johnny thanks for checking out Eddie in the AFL has so many players. The 1989 Grand Final documentary is a must see
YES
A high scoring game but also one of a lot of biffo!
@@mikeythehat6693 I hope he will get too see it
@@kevkoala I hope Johnny will get to see the game
@@anthonypirera7598 so do I...I want to see his reaction. I remember watching the game and getting annoyed at 7 for missing out on much of the biff behind play as they kept taking about it after it happened! >:(
And to think it was a high scoring game with only 6 points separating them at the end.
Johnny Basement's pilgrimage to the MCG is going to be the biggest thing for trans-Pacific relations since WW2.
Eddie, you magician!
Go the Crows
I would be interested to know what criteria you are using to select the AFL team you intend to follow
React to a player who holds the games played record...not a big man but one of the best 432 games. A trulely remarkable record for such a brutal sport consisting of 21 seasons. Cheers
For your further afl education… if the ball is kicked below the knee and crosses the goal line between the two centre posts it’s a goal (sausage roll).
The goal with the great Eddie Betts you thought was a point is actually a goal as you can see in the clip with the outline of the goal square which is only in front of the goal sticks plus where the goal umpire is standing👍 great to see you on board for afl 2023 Go Pies◼️◻️◼️
American has 82 USAFL clubs
Love your videos and passion for AFL.
I don't know if it's just me, but you're hard to hear in the majority of your vids.
Besides that, good stuff! 👍
Hey Johnny! Another great video. I love Eddie betts, one of the greatest. He went back to Carlton for his final two years of his career. (2020-21)
That behind that you saw was a goal btw.
Great vid mate love em
He's called the pied piper because he's a fan favorite. ie; people follow him.
Johnny's homework for president
Anckle breaker we call it a side step to trick your opponent
I think you should come down for the grand final..at the squeegee...I have a feeling that you may enjoy the occasion ...lots..
For some peculiar reason Melbourne is rather passionate about sport..
Book a ticket!
The volume was to low on last one as well, also I have a game highlight’s video between Geelong and Richmond from 2007 round 7 it’s the biggest score and flogging I’ve ever seen over the 150 years Geelong scored 222 points 35 goals something it’s insane and Richmond scored 65 points it’s 180 points ass whooping. Here is the whole game highlights video, ruclips.net/video/9Ekjlqq5eP0/видео.html, and I have the highlights video of the game,
Here’s the highlights video, ruclips.net/video/Ta8OGhBvPyg/видео.html
Eddie Betts will probably go down as one of (if not the best) small forward to ever play this great game.
This video could be a fun one for you and I think will help you learn some teams. It’s a recap of the entire 2022 AFL season. ruclips.net/video/b4zFW_OGmJI/видео.html
Watch brendon fevola for carlton has was a gread. In the millenium match against collingwood he kicked 11 or 12 goals only his 4th or 5th match
Bro you got to check this brother Byron hit stick Pickett out

Cyril Rioli
Can you react to Patrick Cripps, last seasons brownlow medallist.
Also, Kade Simpson, the heart of the team for so long
♥️💛💙
By the way his name is Brent "Boomer" Harvey
Hey mate turn your volume up please
Is this like an inside joke I am missing out on?😅
Nice socks
Why wait until February? Why not do your pick on January 26 as that is Australia Day, which is like the 4th of July in America.
J
dude you have the best sports reaction hahahaha
Love your reactions , Cyril Rioli is the goat ….. check out the hawthorn era of 2012 - 2015 such a great team .
