Love the research you're doing and your appreciation of the history of Aussie rules. Dusty is amazing as you can see. Known for his "Don't argues" and slippery ground work. The marks you are (accurately) calling also show his ability to kick with precision by picking out his team mates and weighting the kick perfectly to their advantage.

the stiff-arm fend-off in footy is called *"the Don't Argue"* lol, the commentators say it regularly in this clip, yes Dusty is very good at them - he's weaponized it. Dusty isn't an "aerialist" so not too many speccies from him but at ground level he's as unstoppable as they come

Before Gary Abblett Jnrs shoulder injury some teams decided attempting to tacking him was a 1-player down situation, as he had such expertise in stiff-arming and avoiding tackles. Gary was averaging around 35 possessions per game at the time. Dusty rarely gets over 25 possessions in a game, but makes most of them count.

    Good question JB!
I think you have to go with Franklin. Martin is a superstar, but midfielders (in general) are a dime a dozen. Almost every team has a star midfielder or two, whereas tall power forwards like Franklin don't come around often at all. Franklin's a generational player.

Martin is the ultimate athlete. His skills and strength are unbelievable. Franklin is a different kind of animal. He is a 6'6", 234lb beast and could never run as far or as long as Martin, but his skills are equally as impressive as you will discover. Dusty is a follower while Franklin is a forward. In 2010 Martin was convicted by the tribunal for a high hit on Sydney's Josh Kennedy and missed being considered for the rising star award. Richmond has won 3 recent premierships with Martin spearheading their attack. Gary (the little master, or son of God) Ablett Jnr and his father Gary (God) Ablett snr are amongst the best ever players, along with Lethal Leigh Mathews, Bobby Skilton, Wayne (the duck) Carey and Tony (plugger) Locket. There were so many great players in the 150-year history of our great game, and most would argue that Martin and Franklin are in the top ten. Of course, James Hird is my number one, being a BOMBER supporter. (Hint.)

The helmet is called "headgear" its optional to wear but most don't. Players wear them for a range of reasons that might be as simple as an unhealed cut on the head they want to protect to something as serious as high risk of concussion. They keep a lot of the heat in so you get super hot so I never wore them.

The Brownlow is the AFL best and Fairest medal awarded at the end of the Home and Away season excluding finals….. the 2017 Grand Final was Richmond’s First Premiership since 1980….then of course they won again in 2019, 2020….. since coming into the VFL/ AFL Richmond has 13 Premiership Cups….. 💛🖤🐯🇦🇺.

@@johnnybasement430 If you want a guaranteed massive crowd week and week out, Collingwood is the way to go. They are the biggest club and average about 65-70,000 fans per game, with a few big fixture games going into the 80-90K plus. Historically, they have had success in almost every decade and have lost more Grand Finals than any other team has even participated in. On average over the course of the last 125 years of VFL/AFL they have made it to the Grand Final once every 3 years. But that being said they have a horrible history of losing Grand Finals. They have won just 15 Premierships (second most in the league) from 45 Grand Final appearances.

Norm Smith also changed the game by encouraging his players not to stop for free kicks from marking or penalty turnover. His idea was if you kept the ball moving faster, the chaos created would reduce the ability of the opponent’s defence to intercept. This is called “play on”, the umpire would yell play on to notify players they are no longer protected by the mark. And can be tackled. Risky move if intercepted, but the speed and chaos makes the defenders job so much harder. But really good defenders can still predict this outcome and read the flight of the ball better then the attacking forwards, forcing a turnover.

Yes, it is actually a helmet, and called that. It's softish though, a bit like boxing gloves. Some players wear them sometimes if they are particularly worried about a recent head injury. I don't think there's a lot of evidence that they offer much protection though. Otherwise you'd see more players wearing them. But some players seem to think it helps, so they do. There's one guy actually, Caleb Daniel, who's worn the same helmet his mum bought him when he was in juniors, great story. If the straps break or something, he just gets it repaired.
Martin isn't actually the guy wearing it in the clip you ask about. That guy received the ball from Martin. If you watch it back, you'll see him in the shit prior. That clip is in there to demonstrate Martin's footskills to hit a teammate with a pass precisely. The helmet guy is amongst 3 converging opposition players. Lots of clips in there demonstrating his awareness and skill precision.
Also, yeah, not really any speccies from Martin there. It's not his style of play. Doesn't jump, just motors along the turf. Strength, speed and skill are his assets. Actually, you mention Buddy a lot too. He's taller but also doesn't jump much or have much of an aerial game.

Take Franklin, cause you always take a dominant game winning big forward over the same dominant game winning midfielder. Franklin's kicked 1000+ goals, you just can't buy that. Every AFL team wants to draft someone that can do that every draft period, so Franklin easily. Martin is a beast though, he's really the prototype modern day AFL midfielder. He's just an inch or two shorter or else he'd be perfection, but Franklin could be the greatest big forward in AFL history. I'm also a Roos supporter who worships Wayne Carey, so that's a huge call or me to make, Franklin's just been that special though.

Cyril Rioli, that was perfect pronunciation Johnny. The first time I saw that guy play I told my friend, who is a fan of that team, Hawthorn Hawks, that Cyril Rioli was the best player I had ever seen. His uncle Maurice Rioli won the Norm Smith Medal in 1980. I was 5 then when the Richmond Tigers crushed my team in the Grannie (Grand Final) and Cyril's uncle was the BOG (Best on ground) [MVP].
Norm Smith is like our Vince Lombardi.
Melbourne sacked him as coach, after that they didn't win the flag for decades. See "curse of Norm Smith". Similar to "Babe" Ruth and the Boston Red Sox. But no drugs.
There was a performance enhancing substance that got the whole Essendon Bombers team banned for one season. The AFL said that the players were given an illegal substance and banned every player that took it, even the ones who were traded to other teams. So, St. Kilda Saints and Port Adelaide had traded players and the player they got could not play for one year. The Bombers were able to play the players they got from other clubs in trades, they had gotten Godard from St. Kilda and he was the only star player they had. They rest were very young or players from other teams that had retired, but came back to play that one year for Essendon. I think they managed to win at least one game, which is more than anyone thought possible in their situation.
You asked if you can live stream a game reaction on RUclips. Yes, you can. But you cannot show the game live on the internet. You can show the score. There were some American guys who showed the game but in a small window, but they were shut down. Now they still stream games on RUclips, but with no vision of the telecast. The AFL don't want people in America to see the game on YT for no charge. F1 are the same. Even if the AFL game is shown live in Aus on free tv they still can block people streaming it on the net. I will get you a link to a U.S. streamer of AFL footy. ruclips.net/video/mftgT5SDOW0/видео.html (this one was from 1 year ago)
    ruclips.net/video/jHDfj1SY-2Y/видео.html
These guys may have uploaded the versions with game footage for context, but they would have only had the score up on the live stream.
The AFL don't have any other Australian Football competitions to compete with them, so they don't seem to mind people showing their product on the internet. Rugby League has 2, SuperLeague in the U.K. and the NRL in AUS, so they are harsher with RUclipsrs than the AFL are.
Just be careful, I don't want anything negative to happen to your experience with AFL. Just remember that the AFL love anything that is "good for football".

My parents don’t really follow footy (sacrilege for Melbournians) I support Essendon, presumably because they were the team to beat in the mid 80s when I started school and (growing up in Melbourne) had to choose a team or face total ostracism. 😂 whilst my younger brother decided to support Collingwood purely to annoy me. 🙄
My 9 year old son goes for the Tigers partly for the same reason, they were top tier around the time he got old enough to start Auskick (kids footy clinics) and was showing an interest. But I think Dusty is the other reason. As others have pointed out he’s not your high flying marksman, stays close to the ground but damn he’s a lot of fun to watch and for little kids just discovering the game they are able to copy and practice a lot of his signature moves in a way they can’t really do with some of those big power forwards. 2018-19 and the school oval was full of 5-10 year olds all practicing their “don’t argues” and fake outs.

Great video! Fun to watch your dive down the AFL rabbit hole.
Dusty is great, his kicking is like a quarterback absolute darts. If I had to choose out of him and Buddy at their peak I'd choose Buddy. Martin is probably the 2nd best midfielder since 2000s and Buddy is the best forward in the modern era. AFL has gotten a lot better defensively since the 90's and even tho Buddy played in the best defensive era he is 5th highest goal scorer ever. I don't think we'll ever see someone kick 100 goals in a season (Buddy last to do it in 2008) and not get close to 1,000 total goals again.
Every AFL team at the end of the year have their own "Best & Fairest" awards night and they are normally an important award people look back at.
You definitely need to react to Eddie Betts he's only 5'9" and one of the best players ever in his position of "small forward" or "forward pocket". As a small forward he was always near the top of most goals scored each season and the shortest player in the top 10 scorers are normally 6'4" and getting to heights of 6'8". The video "Eddie Betts The Pied Piper", this is the best video to react to as it has the best angles showing the skill of his goals and laos shows marks and tackles not just his goals. He retired at the end of the 2021 season and finished 29th all time goal scorer. He was the most exciting player because he could score goals from anywhere within 50 meters and won "Goal of the Year" Award 4 times! (we have a lot of awards in the AFL ha)
Also if you know Pat McAfee he got into the AFL for a few weeks and has an interview with Mason Cox talking about AFL that is a fun listen if you're interested. The first video of him finding AFL is " McAfee & Hawk Sports Talk: AFL" is a fun listen to see another American finding AFL and he's says he watched it live on a Fox Sports channel

Ounce upon a time there was a AFL forward on holidays in NY city walking down the street and suddenly noticed a large crowd gathered around a sky scraper and looks up with the rest of the onlookers and noticed there was a mentally disturbed woman with her baby and suddenly she threw the baby to the streets while at the time emergency service’s had it all under control at the bottom to somehow save the infant, so the big AFL player burst through the crowd and climed the pack and done a perfect SPECY and Caught the baby with the crowd applauding his athletic skills and then upon landing bounced the baby on a big run three times and booted the baby through a set of traffic lights for a GOAL. It’s a old AFL joke Johnny.

They have worked out how to counter his stiff arm now. You will see the defenders grabbing his hand and arm now as he tries to push off. Sadly Dusty hasnt had the same strength or speed since he had a very bad kidney injury . Had a lot of time off and hasnt gotten back to his best . Also lost his Dad last year to which has probably had an effect on his game.

    I’d have Dusty over Buddy.
You won’t see him go up for speckies, the reason he is so dangerous is because he always keeps his feet. Very strong through hips and core. He is usually always the one left standing because everyone else falls down. He was also the first player to get free run of the ground, Dusty plays anywhere he wants.

    • @johnnybasement430
      @johnnybasement430  Год назад +1

No Doubt!! After seeing the highlights of Dustin, I can see your point! Martin's amazing athleticism is almost 2nd to none! When your skills are that much next level, then why worry about speckys? I see your point for sure Vortex!!
