20+ years later, and the "Rick Astley"/"ghastly" rhyme STILL makes me laugh.
Every damn time, it never wears out :-)
Because it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO true !
He wrote this decades before the "Rick-roll" became ubiquitous. When he wrote this, he assumed Rick Astley would be just another one-hit wonder that no one would remember in a few years.
Yup- same here. Whenever I hear him referenced I remember to come listen to this song again.🙂
🎉
I love this guy. He has a great attitude to music and life. Knocks out tunes that are fun, doesn't take it too seriously, laughs at himself and life. In the next life I wanna come back as him.
He’s fantastic
I agree . He's very good , and deserves more recognition . I'm going to post some of his stuff on various social media outlets .
Absolutely lovely, and a funny clip.🙂
I love the all the clever irony in this song. It's a song about how all men lie. Being sung by a man. Who swears that he's telling the truth. Cute bit of songwriting.
+legendaryrat and that's the truth.
Just after he divorced the wife he married in 'Cruel to be Kind'.
Lowe is a clever songwriter.
@@WiltshireByways SO untrue - check your history and dates, dude!
@@mickseeley4666 Nick divorced Carlene Carter the same year this was released (1990). They were married in 1979 with footage from their wedding featuring in the Cruel to be Kind video.
The world would be a sadder place without Nick Lowe. If only all pop stars possessed a sense of humour.
He's saying the song is ghastly because it perfectly encapsulates how all men are liars. Rick is redeemed in the end in that he learns the truth. Plus it gives nick a chance to rhyme Astley with ghastly.
John R Exactly, John! I'm glad there are people out there like you who are smart and are able to see through the wittiness of the song. You have a nice day.
F-ing legend is Nick
I just love how he rhymed "Rick Astley" with "ghastly"!!! A treasure and a really nice, down to earth guy - met him when he toured Oz in the 80s and my friends (Dynamic Hepnotics) played support.
That man has magnificent hair.
The (9) jerks that gave this song a thumps down are still cheating on their wifes or girl friend. Great song Mr. Lowe.
@Music Came here to post this
I met Nick at a Flux gig in Dacorum College, c. 1972, and he told me that he would never go grey. Ain't that the truth.
This song was so enjoyable and funny.
Still sublime all these years later. I can't help but sing along and smile.
God bless Nick Lowe, "the shifty brute"!
Influenced by an episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show". Thanks for posting Yep Roc Records. Cheers!🥨
Still love this song!
Great song---writing and music...rediscovering Nick Lowe is a rare pleasure!!!
a
I have thebred dancing flowet in the video. It was the first decoration that I bought for my first apartment. 😂
This guy is the epitome of musical poet..I could be lying.
How did I ever miss this song?! Great!
You’d better explain! It was released around 1990
I LOVE LOVE THIS SONG
When Nick wrote this song, he explained it by stating that it was a way of saying to the ladies : "Here, let me take some of the burden off your shoulders". A generous fellow he indeed be. And as for a past commenter who labeled Nick a "nobody for the rest of his life"...Well, Rick Astley had a few big hits (which is OK), but Nick has amassed an enormous song catalog over the last 40 years featuring many classics plus a dedicated fan base equal to Astley's. For a "nobody" that speaks volumes.
What a load of crap. So he slanders his own gender to exacerbate the division that already exists between men and women after decades of feminist poisoning and you say "what a great bloke."
There are words for the people who submit to this hateful agenda of playing men against women, blacks against whites, natives against immigrants etc and while you're not as bad as the evil ones pulling the strings, you're still no good until you fucking WAKE UP.
If he wants to do something nice for women he should do it without shitting on the gender opposite otherwise it's not really nice at all, is it?
Sounds like someone's button got pushed
@@paulcasey6759 Dude, get a life, you Socialst bastard! It's s SONG, and a damn good one.
incredible hair.
Superb.
Absolutely love Nick Lowe & this song. Videos then we're so weird.
My coach for tennis showed this to me before he passed away back in April.
This is one of those songs that just sound different than basically everything else, something about the melody, progression and that guitar.. Instantly appealing to me
Great song heard Dar Williams version of this song the other day driving to work..had to see the orginal
I believe him; thousands wouldn't. Bless his heart. :)
LOL! Back then I used to understand: "Old man Elias"! :-)
And, do you like it better than the original?? 😅 I definitely prefer some of my misheard lyrics to the original! 😎😄
Always has been my favourite song of his. Without any political commentary, without any commentary on Rick Astley, Its just a good fun song!
This video is cool and song is best I hope all you people are listening to this song you will like
Cf. rhythmic echoes, 11 years earlier, in Nick's "Cruel To Be Kind".
One of his best. Incredible recording.
This whole album is fantastic!
Would this be classified as a country song even though Nick Lowe is rock n' roll?
Great song from a vastly underated recording.
Nick loves Rick😊
There is a lot of real fighting in the comments about (1)slandering/hating Rick Astley, (2) Promoting a feminist agenda (3) being a gender traitor? Really? The video has dancing plastic flowers wearing sunglasses. It's not that serious.
one of my favorite songs of all time!
Echoes of the psalmist: "I said in my haste, All men are liars" (Psalm 116). Although, as Nick Lowe tells us, he heard the phrase on Oprah Winfrey's show!
Good track, nice video clip. Greetings to one and all from Jarrahnut in wonderful western Australia.
so breezy.. always makes me smile! :)
I am happy when this one is on !
This is great, but my fave is "Raging Eyes".......great video, too
Always endearing and inspired by the music of Nick Lowe...and that's the truth!
Great Song Nick, actually got me a date when I told a chick to watch this video........ Who New!
Easier to get dates if you stop using the word "chick" unless you mean a baby chicken.
@@kathynapierala3048 Get over the women's lib bullshit already, chicky. Now, get back in the kitchen where you belong...
Great song by the master tunesmith!
One of Nick's last Pop songs.
how come I never saw this on MTV?
Mera sanningar från en av de stora låtskrivarna...
Love this tune !!! Great video !! The great Nick Lowe .
One of the few "videos" produced for a Nick Lowe song....
man this brings back memories of the movie titled all men are liars
love this song! Thank you, Nick! Jolly good!
A Master of the hook line!
Great hair!
one of my fave nick songs
An all time great!
That's what brought me here. :)
It's word for word in the Bible...
Rick A should guest on a version of this! (He's turned out to be a guy with a great sense of humour, so I believe he would like the put-down).
My hero!!!
Thanks, Yep Roc.
My very first concert. A long time ago.
It's true. 💯
excellent video
I heart Nick Lowe!!!
J'adooooooooooore!
It took 'em a while to make the video. Some shots are much later in the day.
Nick Lowe!! The best!!!
This is a very cleverly crafted pop song with a brilliantly simple and devastatingly catchy melody. I wish I could write like that!! If you want to see the movie, check out, "All Men Are Liars"
I love this! Ahhh.
🖤💙oh wie wahr💙🖤
TRUTH
A really good version of this was on the podcast Comedy Bang Bang a week or two ago (Lowe was a guest).
Can we get some credits? Who are the actors in this video?
Love Nick!
Great Song. Good Movie.

@Dayvd Allen lol, well whaddya know. Just played the trailer! ok thanks Dayvd
Good times
Nah. He doesn't say all men lie ALL THE TIME. Even liars tell the truth occasionally.
n8icks my dude
Love it
Second verse makes this the anti-Rickroll lol
It's the Empodoclean Paradox, as used by Capt Kirk.
Fantastic song and video!
It's rock n roll extra
Boy, could Nick turn a phrase…
…or what!
👍😀
🖤💙stimmt💙🖤
@mrk70 I didn't realize Dar covered this! She's great, too!
He's like the Bob Dylan of Statements regarding men and I am sure. . . gender in general!!!!
The rick astley bashing in the first verse sent me 🤧
If all men are liars, that means he's a liar too... so, how do we know if this is true at all? I believe Nick Lowe has created a paradox...
Didn't know Gary Buesy had a recording career! 😉
eww.... (but yeah)
That's soooo true!!!!!At least one thing is true that they are liers!!!
thats one serious head of hair
I say Rick Ashley on a talk show recently and he was very nice and has aged well.
Did Rick Astley break his heart? 😂
I admit it! Guilty as charged!
Say it ain’t so Rick! 🤣
cute chicks
