Billy bremner and Dave Edmunds, these and the rest of the Stiff crew ruled their era, covered all their songs back then, brilliant times. Thanks for them.
@Superlungs ….in his early career yes, I have the records! He also recorded with Stiff, I have those records as well. If you’re going to criticise make sure of your facts..
I saw Rockpile in a dingy dark little club venue in Houston back in 78 or 79. My guy friends wanted to stay and talk to the band and I was a 17 yo (under-age) and was smitten with Nick. Dave was super charming, hung out and chatted and even went out back for a smoke with us after the gig. Nick was stand-offish, which both disappointed and was a relief to me. I wouldn't have been able to get 2 coherent words out of my mouth. Still a bit smitten by the way. :)
A very Happy 72nd Birthday Nicholas Drain Lowe 24-03-49, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.. So talented... Singer, writer and producer. I love Rockpile.. Many more Nick.. Cheers. (hppy brthdy Nena too)
+neveramberdrummer You're saying Williams replaced Withers in DS? I ask only 'cause as far as I knew Withers did at least the first couple (maybe more?) of LP's w/DS. No issue, really, both are good, tight drummers, perfect for moving such snappy tunes along. And imho this take of "Crackin' up" benefits from the bass and drums doing the heavy lifting.
+GlenBraeDude He joined Dire Straits in 1982 until 1988. He was on the live album Alchemy and also Brothers In Arms. Loved watching the Alchemy concert on video. Learned a lot from just watching him.
Spent the morning at the DMV. Ive always loved this song at times like this. Next Im going to listen to Dave Edmonds' Carawling from the wreckage. Those guys are great!
Have been aware of Nick as an influential figure in British music since the 70s but have got much more seriously into his stuff over the last couple of years. After seeing him live for the first time recently it's now been further intensified. Now fully immersed in every note Nick has recorded. Absolute quality.
In reality they were on several albums, just not under that name. They were on a good chunk of Nick Lowe's PURE POP FOR NOW PEOPLE, all of LABOR OF LUST, a portion of Dave Edmunds' GET IT (without Billy Bremner), all of TRACKS ON WAX 4, REPEAT WHEN NECESSARY, most all of TWANGIN' and all of Carlene Carter's MUSICAL SHAPES album, along with members of Huey Lewis' News in 1980. So, they were around from 1977 to 1981. They only did shows under the "Rockpile" name. They finally put out SECONDS OF PLEASURE in late 1980, and then broke up in early 1981.
This needs to be the American Election Anthem 2024. Exactly how I feel: "it's a choice between a Douche and a Taco that Shits Ice Cream..."(South Park ref, in case ya didn't notice). "I don't think it's funny no more...." Pretty much, Nick. Why aren't you playing Portland, Or w/ Elvis and Dave? C'mon now: Dates!!🙏🏽🎶🎄
This whole album is one of the best of all time! Can't say that for the rest of his playing career except for a couple he played at Daryl's house. Comments were not allowed on Big Kick Plain Scrap but deserves equal opportunity. Great Producer with early Pretenders!
I didn't know Paul Carrack played with Nick Lowe. Never heard Ragin' Eyes before either... There is still a lot of great music from this era I missed somehow.
+jmlynd I was lucky enough to win tickets to see Nick Lowe play at my school (San Jose State) in late 82 or early 83. I was surprised Carrack was in the band, and they even played "Tempted".
I have the same Danelectro bass , the" NRBQ " model, the " Dolphin Nose" 1449....also cool , Nick is playin' a Harmony Bobkat, keyboard guy using the a Wurly 200A. BTW, one of the greatest Nick Lowe song ever !
June 1979. I was in Junior Two! Teacher like Francis De Woolf. Very scary Irishman Mr Saunders! But to cheer me up we had Nick Lowe imitating Dire Straits Sultans of Swing!
It's late '11 & I'm STILL diggin' this tune forever! Thanks for the post. Being a fan of Cale, Knopfler and CCR I see the parallels here. Like it? You MUST check out Little Village's "She Runs Hot For Me" here on the tube. Lowe, John Hiatt, Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner just tearing it up.
Perfetta sintesi musicale che miscela i sixties dei Creedence con le sonorità strumentali e vocali dei last seventies: a first sight love in rock music!!
Early 70's ... Great hard rock out of Britain .. Humble Pie .. then came the progressive rock phase .. Yes .. Genesis .. and then the PUNKS .. and then .. what a relief .. guys like Elvis Costello, Nick Low and Dave Edmuds ..
AspergerL, try "Keep it out of Sight", it's a cover of a Dr. Feelgood tune, but it'd only be on "The Wilderness Years" or some other compilation. Not an album track. It might even be a demo, I can't remember.
One of THE few '80s songs that had a very strong COOL vibe. Still basic simple rock w/no extra crap. The basic hook of the vocals matches that AMAZING guitar hook. The 2nd. song??? No thank you.
I think “Cracking Up” is one of Nick Lowe’s best song
I still remember the first time I heard it on the radio in 1979 when I was right on the edge. Kept me going. Cheers, Nick.
Same here! Great song!❤

OK, I guess I’m going down to Nick Lowe rabbit hole today!
Listening to this song is cheaper than going to therapy
How about a fix ,Scott, just don't binge you'll be fine ,even better for the self control.
This song is just amazing. It just pops into my head walking down the street and stays there right at the right time and won't go away, ever.
Excellent tune.

One of my fave songs by Rockpile
One of my stranded on a desert island albums.
The drummer is Terry Williams. Went on to play with Dire Straits after finishing with Rockpile. Great drummer.
+neveramberdrummer You're saying Williams replaced Withers in DS? I ask only 'cause as far as I knew Withers did at least the first couple (maybe more?) of LP's w/DS. It's Bobby Irwin on Ragin Eyes.
Williams also played in the great Welsh band "Man".
he also played drums for welsh psychers MAN who werefabulous
A simple perfect song
ROCK PILE !!
cant get over how unassumedly cool some of the songs on this album are
This will probably never go out of style.
Why is this album not on vinyl, would buy it just for this song
This song ages well.
he's real cool for someone that's cracking up
If you like this; "Nervous Breakdown" by Eddie Cochran ('59?) is the shit!!!

She's got RAGING EYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😁Some of the best songs of my life (66 y/o)
I was just a kid working next to the Paradise Theater in Boston in 1979 and I heard the sound check. Thanks Nick @ WBCN
There is some serious left-right panning in this mix. Love it! As my bumper sticker stated in the late '70s, Rockpile Rules!
Terry on the drums, Billy's guitar and Dave's backing vocals just make this already great song,
Is that Terry? Almost looks like Kenny Jones
Thanks Nick Lowe.
I drove my roommates crazy with playing this album nonstop in 1979 or 80. Great album all the way through. Why did they disband?
Which album? This video has two separate bands.
@@mbogucci1 I’m only familiar with this version (okay, I know Tom Petty covered it, too). Who are you referring to?

Rockpile's "Seconds of Pleasure " is one of the best rock albums song for song. It is a shame it is the only they put out.
DrRussPhd Effectively the Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe albums at that time were Rockpile
In reality they were on several albums, just not under that name. Terry Williams - the calm, detached looks crack me up

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers cover this beautifully too. It's on his box set. Excellent!
True. Excellent.
Petty's song Spike was similar to this song.
