In case you guys were wondering if these documentaries were made by a team of people, or if I had hired narrators or other team members as the channel has grown - there's a sneaky mistake thrown in this video that shows I still am just one person doing all of the researching, writing, narrating and producing, and only human 😄
Thanks for watching guys! Please don’t forget to like and subscribe and let me know what you’d like to see covered in the future in the comments!
We got you.
Hi HT, I would like to see what happened to the Anglo Saxon exiles post 1066 who became the Bulk of the Varangian Guard, I know they were rewarded for good service with lands on the NE Coast of the Black Sea but they kind of disappear from History after that, Maybe a stupid and obvious question, But I'm curious if they were the Founders of Georgia? Due to both England and Georgia having the George Cross Flag
Done that! Excellent work .
History Time I have a big wiener
it cool! Great work on this series I have learned so much. I never before knew about the events from the Goth perspective!
Ridiculously good quality videos 👍 better than tv documentaries
Thanks Ryan appreciate the comment
Most welcome 👍
Couldn't agree more. Had to shut ads down as if it was a low quaity video though, as I found myself unable to follow your (superb) narative when it was constantly interrupted by ads.
@@TukozAki if you want to watch documentaries get premium you wont have commercials dont blaim the content creators
@@Ride2Vibe Sorry for answering so late. I'm fine with letting ads show up, to support hard work / well done content. Unless there's so much of them it becomes impossible to watch the work itself. Which ultimately deserves both the content audience and creators. I.e. kind of shooting yoursef in the foot. Also I do support a few independant content creators via paid subscription or Patreon yes, not via YT "Premium", "Superbium" or "Megatherium" so long as Google is first and foremost an ads company.
Fantastic find! At 78, my dream of knowledge of an

Thank you!
This is better than any documentary on tv, the narration, the structuring, the visual. You guys are absolutely amazing.
It'll be even better when an elder who descends from the people explains the stories in more depth than this 😊

11:11 Roman historian: "This is bad year. It shall forever be known as TITLE TEXT HERE." Never speak of this year again.
Yes, it surely was the worst of times...
TITLE TEXT HERE....... doesn't really roll off the tongue so i don't think it will be spoken of much.
We shall never speak of that year ..
Alaaf and than comes the King Druid. Älpha of Elf. I am Omega of all ages and times. Tuath Dé reincarne-vale by The North Star. Shiny beacon of (H)ome.
yeah, see, we are just going to act like this whole dark age thing didn't happen. What year should we tell people it is?
I just listened to part one and two through podcast form. Was honestly shocked how a small channel could put out such quality content. Keep up the good work, you will be up there with the greats one day.
So true. This Chanel is amazing! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Absolutely my favorite channel on RUclips. Just wanted to offer my thanks and appreciation. Genuinely informative and interesting, as well as being approachable to people of various levels of education. If I weren't another broke student, I would gladly contribute regularly. As it is, when finances allow, I do what I can, and I encourage others to do the same.
Cheers!

This is such a fantastic piece, I had no idea we knew so much information about the movement of the German tribes during this period of Roman decline and hun advancement. Thanks for spending so much time on it.
Wife and I love your videos! So in depth & clearly much research done. I applaud you brother. Hard to imagine youre a one man band! Excellent work! Big thanks!
History time is my favorite channel to consume history, the narrator has a calming voice and this channel has many videos in which I have an interest in, the vikings, the many Germanic tribes, england before, during and after Rome. Please continue to make videos and I will continue to watch them.
You had to put this up right as I'm studying for finals
Sorry about that...
History Time: unless Ryan was studying the year 375.
Just happened to be reading some history about this time period. Really helped to visualize what the Goths were up against with the Huns. The Romans were, predictably, so arrogant and made so many stupid mistakes. Over the centuries, people have pretty much stayed the same, unfortunately. Thank you for your narrative and upload.
It's such a fascinating topic. And much more on the way
Huns were a motley crew - Bulgars and Gyoks mixed with Tokarians, Alans, Sarmatians, Scythians, after 2c. Goths so at 4c. it was difficult to tell who is who.
Romans at that time where deeply corrupt they had no favors with god and got what they deserved.
Goths Huns Turks completely devastated the empire into non existence.
That is why all modern day nations have very strict laws against corruption not to let their nation fall like Rome did.
It seems that the logical approach would be to send a military mission maybe a Legion into Gothic lands as allies. Freinds Romans Country men we eaither beat the Hun over there or face him here
O B those laws are useless, we are as corrupt now as back then
The amount of times the Roman Elite betrayed and slaughtered other leaders who surrendered to them, is pretty disgusting. I wonder how different history would’ve been, if Boudicca’s revolt was as effective as the one again Valens....
Had Boudicca's revolt succeeded in the expulsion of the Roman's from the British Isle, it would have been a win-win for both sides. Britain was a waste of time and resources on the Roman Empire, and never came close to paying back for all the military costs required to keep it. There was very little risk of the British tribes causing any significant problems for the Empire. Had Rome just abandoned the Isle, then they could have applied all those resources to the real enemies across the Rhine and Danube rivers... Also, there were quite a few usurpers who came out of Britain, they, too, would never have risen to power and come out to wreck the havoc that they did. Yes, it is too bad that Rome fought so hard for a province it only abandoned about 300 years later...
TEverettReynolds - That’s a claim I’ve heard multiple times, and I’ve always been sceptical of it. If Britain really was such a drain on Imperial resources, they wouldn’t have occupied it for 3 centuries. Withdrawing from Britannia certainly didn’t save the Western Empire in the long run. Withdrawing their forces earlier would simply have provided any anti-Roman confederation likely to spring up in the wake of the Romans retreat with a springboard from which to plunder Roman Gaul. Far from being able to strengthen their positions along the Rhine against the Germans, the Romans would simply have had to redeploy their British legions along the north Gallic coast, just without the British taxes to pay for them. Britain wasn’t solely just a garrison either, the Romans extracted precious metal from Wales and used the south and midlands as a breadbasket that’s kept major cities on the continent fed. Your correct about the problem of usurpers, but then the same could be said of the armies of the Rhine, Danube and eastern garrisons mutinying every time they thought they could propel a General onto the throne. (At least Britain was amongst the furthest provinces from Rome). The biggest problem in my opinion is that Roman Emperors never devoted the time and resources needed to pacifying modern day Scotland and Ireland as if they had done this, they could have withdrawn the bulk of their troops in a few generations and kept the revenue from Britain. The British ourselves did it with a tenth of Rome’s resources, so they could have conquered the British Isles completely if they’d have been willing to see out a decades long occupation.
@@TEverettReynolds your armies(kings) had failed you at this point.

One day absolutely. This Fall of Rome series will likely take me a decade or more. It’s a marathon not a sprint
We all wait expectantly for the day it continues!
Great video, I'm fascinated by the Germanic tribes, as a Spaniard I'm interested in the Visigoths but I find the anglo-saxons even more interesting.
Great great video as always
Charles Yuditsky not really the vandals settled in North Africa not in Andalusia
I hear the kings of Spain claimed descent from the visigoths
@@MattieK09 They did as they had gothic ancestry or were half goths.

Hello, you did a nice job so far and the video quality is excellent!
Dont worry about the mistake we all make them daily!
Superb this - well done.
Thanks very much Alfredo appreciate it
Can you provide a citation for the self sacrifice of Ermanaric? There is very little on the web regarding this. Nothing that speaks to him sacrificing himself. Thanks
Ammianus Marcellinus, Res Gestae XXXI - "He was struck with consternation at the violence of this sudden storm; for a long time he did his best to maintain a firm and continued stand, but since rumour gave wide currency to and exaggerated the horror of the impending dangers, he put an end to his fear of these great perils by a voluntary death."
Hector Osbert that’s a leap
i just want to say that i love this channel
Very pleasant to listen to, as usual. Congratulations
Thoroughly enjoyable documentary.

Nice video.
An episode on the roman fleet patrolling the saxon shore on south coast of britain in the time period you are concerned with. By the way my earlier comment on the felix expedition does not fit your time frame, but perhaps you could do it some other time. The commander of the felix expedition was aelius gallus.
Awesome storytelling as always. Thanks!
Thanks so much!
An episode on the roman expedition to arabia felix, now called yemen. I have heard they marched south along the wst coast of arabia , and were supplied by sea by the roman navy, did this really happen?
Yes.Ant it is not hard to read about it in primary sources all of which are easy to find online for free.
Your videos are brilliant! Many thanks!
Dude someone should make a movie of this stuff
Maybe the CIA "Operation Fritigern the refugee" ?
That skull has a large mass for deformation alone, what are the sagital line shapes and placement?
I like how at 2:42, when you're supposed to be viewing the world at 375 BC, you see a modern car driving along the road.
That was the 375BC Wild Stallionus. Great breed of horse of that time, in terms of transport for gathering food of such🤣🤣
Wow, you actually plan 20 episodes for the fall of the Roman Empire? Highly ambitious 👌🏾
@@trancevoyagesessionswere there just the 2, do you know?
Tq for sharing your knowledge with such entertaining presentation
That bust you captioned as Ammianus is actually a bust of Constantine, nice pressentation though
I never realized the goths were basically like the population overflow of Germanic tribes. These documentaries teach me more than a whole semester of college typically does.. the professor I had just listed off the names and focused mostly on Roman laws and freaking satellite images of Irish farms. THIS is what we should be learning about in this video.
excellent video really great work
Rolling a fat joint as we speak...getting ready to watch.
Your gonna achieve so much in life
So interesting.
It is indeed a fascinating time period
The Alans wouldn't stop running until they got to France.
The vandals ran till they got to Africa lol

Captivating! Thank you very much for this work.
This Richomeres Frankish guy seemed to have been quite a General to listen too. Erff Valens...
THank you! THis was very well done!!!!!
Thankyou!
Why history time ? Why do you such great videoes . But yes again you make an awesome . Well researched . But again. So hallo from Denmark I Can also link Denmark to history of the roman Empire . As tradition states that the cimbri (Who toghether with teutones fought the roman repuplic between 113 and 101 bce) came from northern Jutland . No one knows why the cimbri migrated South . Some theories talk famile or over population . But cimbri migrated South . And eventully they entered gaul and Spain . Where they raided . This brought them into conflict with the romans ... And after a series of battles . Where the cimbri and teutones defeated several roman armies . Their armies were finally defeated the roman consol Gaius Marius in 101 bce in northern Italy . But also the germanic thribe the herules is said have come from Scandinavia . According the gothic historian Jordanes, the herules came from modern southern sweden and the danish Island if Bornholm . They also migrated South and settled on Black sea coast. And in the year 261 . The herules with fleet attacked and raided Athens . Where they did huge damage to puplic buildings and agora . And the herules was among the tribes (like the goth ) that entered the roman Empire in third century and settled down ...
Thanks very much for the comment! Interesting

Ermanaric had THE biggest balls on Earth at the time to look his people and his customs and decide that offering his own life, and foregoing all vanities and titles that came with his position, was the best option for the future of his people. He chose to show by example how much he believed in their culture and the strength of their will by paying the ultimate price.
Except it’s not true
*Cries* in Roman :´(
Damn good work man.
great documentary
Narrated by a master storyteller
Lovin' your work.
The Goths are cousins of the Slavs who were only forming as a nation at their time. They fought and pushed each other around the world, and they still continue doing so. I see in this documentary a very good explanation of today's conflict between East and West. In fact, Goths never stopped coming back against the Slavs, and viceversa.
Great stuff @History Time, are you going to finish this series?
All the while, Bauhaus plays in the background
The Romans and various tribes learned from each other. Empires are too often represented as conquering due to "being on top of their game" militarily, but the learning curve was experienced by both, and I note a historic and laudable defeat by Germans of Romans that insured they'd never return.😊
It is amazing that later it was Goths who considered themselves guardians of roman civilisation...
Love your historical content! And although I'm clearly not clever by noticing the error around 11:13 while we are at it....drop the hand drawn arrows on maps. They dont add much value if any and they look pretty terrible. With that said ...I truly enjoy your historical narratives...outstanding content and you have a great voice to compliment it. Also wanted to volunteer my help....I'd be happy to review any of your videos prior to posting to make sure small errors are not missed. Free of charge of course and it would be my pleasure to help. Let me know!
This channel is 10 times better than that propaganda you get on "kings & generals"
8:20 those Hunnic longbows must have seemed very impressive - until the Armorican Britons shot “arrows like rain” into the Hunnic lines in the climactic battle of 451.
This is quite difficult to follow but I'm enjoying it nonetheless. Do you plan to do any slavic related videos (specifically on the Polish kingdom pre-commonwealth)?
Goddamn it! It finished! Didn't even notice, so intense..
This was very enjoyable and, as far as I could see, historically accurate. The narrative text is full of distracting dangling modifiers and the pronunciation of Latin names is mostly pretty bad (For example, it's Marcomanni not "Macromanni". Maybe that was in vol. 1. I'm not sure. That was just the one that stuck with me most.) Nevertheless, I do appreciate the contribution these videos make to public education.
9:48 Vithmir, what a beatifull Slavic name, nowadays we say rather "Vesmir", or maybe it was "Vićmir" - "peace of cord-letter", reffering to Inca-like writing system of ancient Slavs.
Important tip: Never starve your newly-subjugated warrior vassals - particularly if they've been your nominal enemies all their lives and are now filled with anger and resentment at being forced to cower behind your defences in order to keep breathing.
Romans: Starving vassals now. What can possibly go wrong?
Vassals: ...Gonna eat your foot now...
Maybe a little bit too melodramatic in style. But nowhere near the overly bombastic overly simplified crap of TV documentaries of the last 15 or so years. So big thumbs up.
And you don't hear many "according to" "apparently"or sources being mentioned in Hollywood documentaries.
Btw: does the word "Hunting" come from the Huns? Never thought of that.
I'm a huge fan, but who out there wheres history time t-shirts ???
Respect to the Goths and their descendants👍🙏🏻
Nice
Thankyou!
I like the prominence of maps.
@History Time Maybe think about re-doing some of your older content. It can be hard to follow what you say at times and the music tends to be much louder than the level you speak at, forcing one to continually raise and lower the volume. meh back to the "show" When you speak it sounds like I'm listening to you through a cup, that is connected by a string to another cup, that you're speaking in to; then all of the sudden, music blares loud and clear(at a higher decibel).
