"Worry more about impressing yourself than others" I wanted to cry when I heard you say that. I very much needed to hear that, and now I will strive to remember this daily. Thank you!

The anger we feel when loved ones do stupid things is actually a projection -- we feel responsible for these people and somehow we blame ourselves for their condition. It's anger at our own inability to change the situation.

Addiction is seeking comfort in that which is destroying you

Good day Gentlemen, I have subdictions. I live a sparse and frugal life. A limited wardrobe, food intake and living in general. 2nd hand shopping when necessary, no booze, I get around by walking, cycling and buses or trains. Charitable contributions are null. Financially I’m below the poverty level and too old get a “career oriented “ job. I deal with my own aches and pains.
I know there are many more in the world that enjoy a similar existence. Keep up your sound advice and guidance. Take care and stay safe.

My hoarding is more of an OCD than addiction. But my shopping/overconsumption is an addiction. The difference between my two is that I get a “shopper’s high” and feel great when I’m shopping. If I give away something I have hoarded, I have a panic attack of letting it go.

When my brother was in Rehab at Bethesda Naval Hospital our family was given the truth that we as a family were as addicted to saving or fixing him as he was to the alcohol! I began my journey into 12 Step & learning how I could not help anyone I was judging. First I had to work on my own codependency! I remember the day I heard these words...Alanons are sicker than the Alcoholic because we do what we do STONE COLD SOBER! Letting that sink in was a definite AHA MOMENT! Love your podcasts, like breathing fresher air everytime I listen!!💖

The episodes are getting shorter. I really loved the long "discussy" versions much better. Got so many insights and value out of them.

In Alanon I heard this, and always stuck with me: “You are responsible TO him. Not FOR him.”

Ignorance just means “Unknowing”. I think he meant to say his brother doesn’t have a clue how bad he is and isn’t aware. My father has been staying at my house because he lost his job a few years ago due to drinking. He made it a solid couple years only drink on rare occasions and now he’s drinking daily again. I don’t have many choices but to kick him out on the street. And I don’t know if that will even make me feel better. I know he’s not my responsibility but I don’t really know what else to do. I also suffer from Opiate Addiction so I understand his situation but I’m 30 and he’s almost 60 with no sign of getting a job or getting better. I’m actively trying to get over my addictions and have cut out a lot of other drugs. I haven’t drank in 5 years so I’m getting better. He would die if I kicked him out on the streets because it’s so cold in Canada. ugh. Sorry for the rant.

This is a timely episode. I have decided to quit coffee/energy drinks/strong teas at least until the 15th of December to detox my body from too much caffeine. (Tmi but: Too much caffeine makes your pee concentrated and smell icky. And I have sensitivity to gross smells.)
But with working a retail job and experiencing the withdrawal headache/irritability, it is just so important to remember to breathe well, like Wim Hof. It doesn't immediately get rid of the pain but it gives your brain enough oxygen to continue processing the demands of the job and interacting with so many people.

The obsession for wiping surfaces, plane seats, and washing hands like crazy became the norm now. Ryan was definitely ahead of times!!

I want to help someone with an alcohol addiction but I’m scared to do it to tell them that they have a problem. It’s my manager (well my sous chef). He gets very angry during service yelling at people from nothing. The whole management team is aware of his addiction and even tho they keep enabling his addiction by not stepping in. So in the end no one can say anything I don’t know who to tell the information to since it’s been accepted by the higher management where do I go next.

Wow, powerful stuff. I've had someone in my life a while ago who was addicted. I had the positive mindset and truly believed things would change over a long period of time; however, it started to affect my mood and mindset towards that person too. I am glad I choose healthy surroundings. I am doing a lot better now, and if the person wants to change, I hope it happened. I think it's powerful you both experienced it and discuss this.
