Guys, another important cost of the upgrade that people may want to think about: environmental cost.
If you can keep your item or replace it with a (less sought-after) second hand item, you'll be one less customer for businesses that use our planet's valuable resources.

Discovered you guys from Matt's channel. So glad I found you. Changed my life. Small example, phone upgrades, i was obsessed and convinced I needed the latest and greatest while my gf laughs and rocks a 4 year old model with no problems. I'm now downgrading! Keep up the great work!

Anyone else without TV? I mean people still think I am crazy, or I must be bored living alone at my house, without one big screen TV. I hate TV programs, I hate TV ads, and I am still overjoyed with RUclips channels like this one just listening and thinking about life. Minimalism is my way of life! Thank you and I will be without TV for 4 Years next summer, can't wait!!!

My mindset has changed as I age(almost 6o years old). What does not serve a physical purpose. I tend to not buy. Yeah, it may be a better version. It doesn't give me any more giggles, really. It may be beautiful , but the memory of it's beauty is already been appreciated by my heart and mind. Etc.........

Great talk. This conversation is an eye opener for people who want the newest thing. I rarely upgrade my stuff. Only when otherwise it creates inconvenience or more energy.

I listen to the podcast on Spotify, but dropped by to just give a little testimonial about my own “upgrade urge”. It’s enlightening and helpful to know that you’ll never stop getting urges to upgrade or get something new, even if you know you don’t need or even really want it. For example, I have a pair of Vans that I’ve had for four years now that have gone with me through thick and thin and still look amazing after a crap ton of wear. I’m thinking of buying a white pair because I don’t have a white pair of shoes and I know I’ll wear them, since I’ve been this last pair like crazy for the last four years and I’m willing to pay the price for upkeep and care. This also gave me the idea of buying a newer style of my old, black ones. Now, the style that’s popular is the one with the stripe and mine doesn’t have a stripe, but it’s basically the same thing. Part of me knows I don’t need the upgrade, but still recognizes that the more “in” style is also nice and I’m able to appreciate the product when I see it. However, another part of me still wants it. The thing about changing your consumerist habits is you become more in tune with yourself, and that translates to other aspects of your life, as well. In this scenario, this is how my inner dialogue went down:
Me: those are cool :O the stripe makes it look modern, and kind of would totally any outfit pop.
    Also me: buy it
    Me: what
    Also me: buy it
Me: ... why?... I have the same pair, just without the stripe
Also me: because of the striiiipe
    Me: no... Katherine, that’s dumb
Kind of like that Kermit meme. Anyways, realizing that I’ll always have a little materialistic voice in my head makes it easier to combat it in the long run. It won’t always be easy, but it’ll be worth it because impulse purchases never work out in your favor.

This is the first podcast of yours I've recently listened to and it won't the last. I find your flow and banter entertaining and the content is useful.
I would like to share my 2 step process for upgrading my stuff.
First 'is this worth carrying/moving?' I've moved house/country often and time spent boxing and unboxing stuff is time I could use instead to improve my self.
Secondly, I remove my ego and vanity and focus on functionality. This is engrained by my grandmother who believes in fixing over replacing. I was given a (male) coat by a friend when travelling in New Zealand and it's ideal for the English weather now that I'm home. I thought I 'needed' to buy a new (female) coat but when I asked myself and was honest with my answer, the only reason why I wanted a new coat was to look more feminine and stylish when out and about. and really I don't actually care what others think of me so no new coat for me!

Every time Josh pulls out his pad of paper and starts reading from his writing it absolutely reminds me Albert from I ♥️ Huckabees and all I can think of is, "This rock teaches us how to sit. Sit, rock." 😂
Really, though, I love it. It's wonderful to listen to poetry about things, "Materialism in the truest sense of the word." Our environment is about so much more than it's extrinsic value.

This year I encouraged my family to have a gift free Christmas. Instead of buying presents each one of us is cooking a dish to bring over to my moms house and in that way we can all enjoy it.

I made personal vouchers last year... For example 2 hours of weeding for my best friend and a lunch outing with my mother inlaw. This year I was telling people about my Xmas vouchers because I was still impressed with my idea and it was something a bit different.... Then I woke up this morning and realised the actual reason I made these vouchers was because I had been unemployed for 3 months (from burnout) and I actually didn't have the spare money for Xmas 🙄

I have gone back to an iPhone 5. I'm kind of sick of buying expensive new phones every few years. Waste of money, resources and sends the message that what I have and am isn't good enough now.

I'm with you on the whole 'phone' thing Ryan. I'd like to just get rid of mine but...no one calls the home phone...they would rather text. I own the 5 and was told it wasn't that popular so I can't even purchase a protective case for it!! It pisses me off that it's been programmed to slow down and force an upgrade...seriously!!! This is not the first time I've heard people trading the smart phone for the dumb phone!!

Nicole Robin there are plenty of cases for the iPhone 5 and iPhone SE online if you need one. The 5 and SE have the same exterior so the cases would be interchangeable.

For the listener who wanted to know what to do with old technology (iPhone, iPad, Android), you can sell them back to the carrier or the manufacturer. Depending on the condition of the item, you can do fairly well financially and the company will recondition the item if possible and re-sell it. There are also companies that will recycle technology. One last suggestion... in my town we have an online community called Freecycle where a member can request an item and someone who has one and no longer needs it will give it to you for free. I have found this to be a good service and I have used it to give away items I no longer needed. Both times the recipients were very grateful and gracious in receiving items that they needed. I felt good that the items went to people who needed them and could get value from items that no longer provided value for me. Conversely, you can list items that you no longer need and get responses from members who need that item.

Ughhhh yes this is so difficult sometimes. Want verses need. I don’t need a new vehicle, I really want one because my small car is horrible getting my one year old in and out of his car seat in the back or during travel. BUT the cost of buying a new vehicle, I can manage dealing with the annoyance for a few more years I’m sure. People do it all the time, and money in the bank for a house and more babies seems like the smarter choice.

I have a question about Christmas and gifts, what would you recommend for someone who wants to save money for University but always feels guilty about not getting your family and friends gifts because it's a set standard that you buy a gift at the equal value for each other?

Mega pixels are the total number of pixels in the image, Mega meaning 1000 of them. A 12MP photo is a 3000×4000 pixel image, usually, which works out to decent print quality at 300 ppi. However, this feature doesn't matter that much for people who don't create printed materials unless they are streaming HD content onto a large screen, like a living room TV. Maybe some people set their smart TV screensavers to photo albums. Idk.

Myosotis they have iPhones. An iPhone X and iPhone 6. I work for sprint and see the new phone marketing all the time. I recommend going with an older iPhone or a year old android that still is a great device and so much cheaper than the latest and greatest.

Definitely look into a FairPhone. Fairly produced and at a reasonable price. Oh, AND you can replace parts on your own, easily, if for instance the battery starts to get weak. As soon as my 6S wears out I'm gonna get myself one

I have a NIkon D70 and I am going to use it till it decentagrates in my hand! Then I am going to go buy another one! Provided I can find one. Fuck HD! LOL I find it so hilarious that people are out buying HD technology and then use the hell out of the blur filters, like why! I don't really hate HD. Well, maybe a little. Anyway, I have a rebellious nature when it comes to consumerism and trends. I have Vista ok. The only reason I am getting a computer is because Vista isn't supported any more. OK, maybe I am a bit extreme. LOL

Walked into the Apple store to buy the iPhone XR 1000 dollars budget model and walked out buying an iPhone XS Max 2000 dollar model being their top of the line model. Oh and a megapixel is 1000 pixels. Okay technically is 1024 pixels. Mega pixels are used in Cameras to show how many pixels it can pick up. Your screen has a certain amount of Pixels as well such as 1920x1080 pixels on a regular monitor or for 4K it is 4096x2160 pixels. Pretty much its how good something looks, the more pixels the better. Truly one case where less is NOT more. You cant give more value to less pixels like you can with other things. If you lower the resolution on this video it will have less pixels and then the video will start looking worse and worse.
